In the end, simple black and white for the Comedy King who brought color to people's lives

MANILA, Philippines – At 2:22 pm Sunday, workers at the Heritage Park in Taguig gently slid Comedy King Dolphy’s casket into the granite tomb that will serve as the final sanctuary of his mortal remains, closing a chapter on over eight decades of a life well lived, and lived always for others.

Moments before that, his children, followed by partner of 23 years Zsa Zsa Padilla, approached the casket to alternately pray and whisper final messages, their tears washing over the glass top of his casket.

At 2:28 pm, after everyone had put in their send-off flowers inside the granite tomb, officiating priest Fr. Larry Faraon enjoined the crowd to show Dolphy “how happy we are” as he would have wished. He asked everyone to address the person next to him or her and smile, and then to shout, “Mang Dolphy masaya kami, na kay Lord ka na.” He then asked them to clap and repeatedly shout, “Mabuhay si Mang Dolphy!” a greeting that befits a true king who lived in the Filipino heart in times of war and peace, of plenty and poverty, of sorrow and celebration.

In her final message to the man she loved and to the crowd, Zsa Zsa said simply, “Maraming salamat sa lahat ng pagmamahal na binigay mo sa amin, at sa sambayananang Pilipino. We love you….God bless us all..”

Confetti rained, doves were released, as the crowd cheered. Soon workers started to seal the above-ground tomb, its gleaming black image in dramatic contrast to the predominantly white background of tarps bearing Dolphy’s various incarnations, and the white dresses of mourners, except for Zsa Zsa who wore black. Dolphy’s favorite color was white; the other favorite color being red, which the crew from his home network, TV5, wore.

At the TV5 studios, Paparazzi host Cristy Fermin, joined by Paolo Bediones, Amy Perez and Dolly Ann Carvajal, annotated the live proceedings at the Heritage Park. They noted that the marvelous bronze casket--repeatedly described as fit for a king--had been bought by Dolphy way back in 1976, at a cost of P1.8 million. He had repeatedly joked to friends that he was blessed with a long life--he would have been 84 on July 25---because he prepared for his death too early.

In the end, black and white dominated the scene, an ironic sendoff for a man whose lifelong obsession was to bring color into other people’s lives.

Dolphy Jr. thankful for the love Zsa Zsa Padilla gave to his father

Dolphy Jr. told PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) that their family is coping.

“Okay naman, pero siyempre, kung ako nga hangga’t maaari, e ‘wag tumakbo yung oras.

“Kung mapipigil mo lang, di ba? Kaya lang, dadating talaga, e."

In a brief interview on Friday, July 13, the third day of the wake of the Comedy King at the Heritage Park in Taguig City, Dolphy Jr. said: “Nalulungkot dahil mawawala yung aming hinihingan ng advice, sinasandalan, yung nagpapasaya sa amin."

Dolphy Jr. is Rodolfo Vera Quizon Sr.’s son with former stage actress Engracia Dominguez. It can be recalled that Dolphy Jr. was charged with and imprisoned for 18 years for arson that claimed six lives including the offspring of actress Mina Aragon.

It was alleged that he started the fire while he was high on drugs. In 1998, Dolphy Jr. was pardoned by the former President Joseph Estrada. The Comedy King’s son has since lived a renewed life as a preacher for Brother Eddie Villanueva’s Jesus is Lord Church.

Asked to describe his relationship with his father, Dolphy Jr. said: “Kami ng father ko… hindi naman talaga ‘hindi pagkakaunawaan.’ Kaya lang siyempre, dala ko ang pangalan niya.

“May advantage and may disadvantage. Kagaya nung nasangkot ako sa isang kaso, siyempre dala-dala ko po yung pangalan niya, nahihiya ako sa father ko."

The former actor, who used to star with Dolphy in films, added, “Kasi alam ng father ko, dun sa kaso ko na yun, wala naman akong alam dun, e. Kasi nung panahon na mangyari yung sunog na yun, magkakasama kami ng Tatay ko, e."

I LOVE YOU, DAD. Dolphy Jr. was with his father when the Comedy King was in and out of the hospital.

“Madalas akong nasa ospital. Ako nagbabantay din sa kanya do’n."

If he could talk to his father, he would tell him, “I love you, Dad."

“Mahal na mahal namin ang Daddy ko, e. Kasi grabe din ang binigay niyang pagmamahal sa amin.
“Kasi hanggang sa huli… [kahit] hindi mo na nga madinig magsalita pero ‘pag bumuka ang bibig, ang tanong [niya], ‘Kamusta kayo? Kumain na ba kayo?’"

ON ZSA ZSA PADILLA. Dolphy Jr. is grateful to actress-singer Zsa Zsa Padilla for the devotion and love she gave the Comedy King in their 23 years together as a couple.

“Nagpapasalamat talaga ako [na] siya ang binigay ng Panginoon sa Daddy ko, kasi talaga yung pagtiya-tiyaga niya…

NATIONAL ARTIST AWARD. Dolphy Jr. is happy to hear that President Benigno Aquino III has declared July 10, “Dolphy Day."

The public clamor to declare his father a National Artist has been in the news in the past days.

“Kaya nga ‘National,’ e. Hindi naman pang elite lang yan, e.

“Daddy ko kasi ang taong may etiketa, in the sense na kung ayaw mo ibigay sa kanya, okay lang. Wala namang problema, e.

“Kasi, sa dami naman ng nagmamahal sa Tatay ko, sa dami ng nananalangin sa Tatay ko, alam ko, sa puso ng masang Pilipino, Daddy ko ay National Arist, e."

Zsa Zsa Padilla: Dolphy battled COPD for 6 to 8 years

Contrary to earlier reports that Dolphy was diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) just recently, the late comedian had actually been suffering from the disorder for six to eight years already.

This was revealed by Zsa Zsa Padilla, his longtime partner of 23 years, in an emotional and candid eulogy at the Dolphy Theater Wednesday evening during a necrological service for the talents and employees of ABS-CBN, the network that served as his home TV studio for many years.

“Nagsimula ‘yun noong nagkaroon siya ng walking pneumonia. Di pa namin naintindihan kung ano yun,” Zsa Zsa said, referring to the COPD. “Sabi nya, bakit masama daw pakiramdam niya wala naman siyang lagnat? Ganyan.”

The singer-actress then revealed that what started as routine visits to the doctor became more frequent as the disease progressed.

“Isang beses sa isang taon nagpupunta siya sa ospital. Tapos naging dalawang beses sa isang taon. Hanggang naging tatlong beses. Tapos padalas na nang padalas,” she continued.

“Hanggang two and a half years ago, sinabi na sa amin ng doctor na stage 4 na siya ng COPD. Kinailangang kausapin ang lahat ng mga anak niya.”

Even as they had to deal with the already terminal nature of Dolphy’s illness, Zsa Zsa said it allowed the comedian’s children to set aside whatever personal differences they might have and come together as one family unit.

“Mula noon, naramdaman ko na isa kaming isang tunay na pamilya. Posible naman pala na kahit mga anak ni Dolphy na nanggaling sa iba-ibang mga nanay ay puwede naman kaming magkaisa. ‘Yan po ang naranasan namin,” she shared.

Dolphy has a total of 18 children by six different women, including actors Eric and Ronnie Quizon who alternately acted as family spokespersons during the Comedy King’s month-long confinement at the intensive care unit of the Makati Medical Center.

Zsa Zsa also expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the entire nation for all the prayers said during Dolphy’s struggle to overcome his illness.

She singled out the doctors, nurses, and orderlies who took turns in taking care of him, the many blood donors that helped keep his pneumonia at bay and “the numerous friends who visited daily to check on his condition and those who helped shoulder Dolphy’s medical condition.”

Zsa Zsa also gave special mention to the management of TV5 “who continued to give Dolphy his salary throughout the remainder of his life.

“Thank you for the respect you gave his name for honoring his contract despite knowing he could never tape again,” she tearfully said.

She also thanked ABS-CBN for taking care of Dolphy’s legacy and for taking a chance on the comedian in 1992 “para makabalik siya sa pinakakamamahal niyang telebisyon.”

Zsa Zsa also shared her recollections of Dolphy whom she fondly referred to as “lovey.”

“In loving the man, I came to accept all that came with him, his legacy, his personality when not in front of the camera and of course, his children. Hindi nagging madali ang lahat ng iyon pero he was worth it,” she admitted.

She then concluded her speech with an a capella rendition of Kenny Rogers’ “Through The Years” that moved the star-studded audience of mostly Kapamilya talents to tears anew.

A public viewing of Dolphy’s remains at the Dolphy Theater at the ABS-CBN compound followed the service at around 9PM.

Fans of the comedian gathered outside the audience entrance of ABS-CBN early Wednesday afternoon hours before the comedian’s remains arrived at the station.

Among them was Raniel Atendido, who worked as an extra on Dolphy’s ABS-CBN sitcom “Home Along Da Riles” and proudly showed his souvenir photos with the comedian.

On Thursday, it will be the turn of TV5 management, employees, and talents to pay homage to Dolphy at the Heritage Park. His remains will be open to public viewing on Friday and Saturday.

Alma Moreno cherishes memories of Dolphy; ‘He was a good father’

MANILA – Alma Moreno, a former partner of the late Comedy King Dolphy, on Thursday broke her silence on his passing, calling him a “good father” to their son, Vandolph, and a beloved person in her life who left her with many memories to cherish.

Conferring the National Artist Award on Dolphy posthumously would be a useless exercise, Moreno, an actress and Paranaque councilor, said.

“It is useless. Mas masarap na buhay pa siya at mararamdaman niya ang award,” Moreno, a former partner of the late comedian, said in an interview during the signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Agreement between the Philippine Councilors League, Junior Chamber International (JCI) for a P1 million grant from Senator Edgardo Angara.

Various sectors had clamored for conferring the National Artist Award on Dolphy in the weeks leading up to his death on Tuesday.

Moreno, the president of PCL, has a son, Vandolph, from her eight-year relationship with Dolphy. She had not yet visited Dolphy’s wake.

“I am not missing in action. I am just so busy. I am going around for the PCL. However, kaninang umaga dapat nagpunta kami ni Vandolph, but he texted me na huwag na muna. Kasi mas gusto kong pumunta nang walang tao,” Moreno explained.

“Mahaba pa naman ang panahon. Hanggang linggo pa naman. Saka gusto ko kasama ko ang apo ko sa pagdalaw sa kanya,” Moreno added.

She said she will cherish her memories of Dolphy, especially the time they met and fell in love while making the 1981 film “Titser’s Pet” and their visit with Vandolph to Disneyland in California.

“Naalala ko noon, di ba ang taba-taba ni Vandolph? Kinakarga niya, pero hindi niya makarga,” Moreno reminisced.

She said Dolphy was a good father to all his children, especially Vandolph.

“That’s one thing that I admired about Dolphy — he was a good father. He prepared himself. Gusto niya sa time na iyon, nandoon lahat ng kanyang mga anak.”

She also paid respect to Zsa Zsa Padilla, Dolphy’s companion for the last 23 years.

“Wala akong balak na ipadala sa aming bahay ang kanyang burol. But I really admire Zsa-Zsa. Bilib talaga ako kay Zsa Zsa dahil nandoon siya hanggang sa huli,” Moreno said.

Rodolfo "Dolphy" Quizon may have passed away, but he lives on in the memories of countless Filipinos whose days he brightened up with his funny skits and brilliant performances.

That Dolphy will be most missed is made evident by the thousands of messages that continue to pour out.

Here are 10 ways to pay tribute to the man who made us all laugh and smile.

1. Smile, though you heart is breaking, or so goes a line in a popular song.

When Jessica Soho asked Dolphy how he would like to be remembered, he answered simply, "with a smile on their faces."

According to his memoir, Dolphy liked Frank Sinatra, Doris Day, and Ella Fitzgerald.

7. Wear red for firsts – the first day of the week, the month or the year.

"Nakuha ko siguro ang red sa Chinese Feng Shui. Pula raw, maganda ‘pag Monday, first day of the week, o kung first day of the month or first day of the year," he said in his memoir "Dolphy: Hindi Ko Ito Narating Mag-isa."

8. Love your own language.

Dolphy believed there is no shame in speaking in Tagalog, even if many college graduates prefer to speak in English. "Basta 'tina-Tagalog ko sila pag hindi ko naiintindihan. E, ano ba'ng pakialam ko, kung mag-e-English ka diyan, nakakaintindi ka naman ng Tagalog, 'di managalog ka. Tayong mga Pilipino, masyadong pintasero. Hindi ako nahihiyang mag-English kapag 'Kano ang kausap ko, e, maski magkamali ako, okay lang. Mayro'n pa ring communication, at nagkakaintindihan. Ang Pilipino, iniintindi 'yong mali mo sa English; 'yon ang napansin ko," he said in his memoir.

9. Travel. See the world while you still can.

Dolphy described his younger self as "layas." "Gusto ko talaga, kaya ako sumasama sa kung saan-saan. Maski konti ang bayad, sumasama ako, makakita lang ng bagong lugar.”

"Pag biyahe ka rin nang biyahe, marami kang matututunan. Mahilig nga akong mag-observe, kung papaano 'yong right conduct, nakikita ko e. At kahit minsan, sumasablay ka, mayro’n namang magsasabi sa iyo kung ano 'yong tama. Pati na rin ang tamang paggamit ng kubyertos," he said in his memoir.

Wear white and a smile for Dolphy - Ronnie Quizon

MANILA, Philippines - Hours after his father passed away and countless tributes aired on TV, printed in newspapers and posted online, son Ronnie Quizon posted the following arrangements on his Facebook page for the public viewing of Dolphy’s remains, as well as certain special requests from the family.

Unless indicated, it is presumed that the venue of the public viewing is at Heritage Park where the late comedy king’s remains were brought from the Makati Medical Center, where he died of multiple organ failure at 8:34 pm Tuesday after over a month in hospital.

“So sorry if I haven’t been responding to your messages, emails, texts and calls, as I’m still a bit busy attending to my dad and family.

I’ll try to get back to you as soon as I can. Meanwhile, here are some important announcements and requests:

1. PLEASE WEAR WHITE FOR MY DAD. IT'S MY FATHER’S FAVORITE COLOR.

2. Instead of flowers, please make donations to the DOLPHY AID Para Sa Pinoy Foundation. My father would prefer that you help him help other Filipinos.

3. ABS-CBN DAY - (Wednesday, July 11, 2012)

My father’s body will be at the Dolphy Theater in ABS-CBN from 1:00 pm today until 3:00 am tomorrow. The early hours will be for ABS-CBN employees and other Kapamilya, and our family and friends. ABS-CBN will open its doors for public viewing starting 9:00 pm tonight, until 3:00 am tomorrow. After which, my father will be brought back to the Heritage Park.

4. TV5 DAY - (Thursday, July 12, 2012)

We will open our doors for public viewing daily from 8:00 am up to 3:00 pm. On this day, however, TV5 employees and other Kapatid will have the rest of the day (and night) along with our family and friends.

Note: As of this writing, we still don’t know the arrangements with GMA7, so please wait for further announcements.

Doors will be open for the public from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm. The rest of the day will be reserved for family and friends of the family. After 3:00pm, please make arrangements with members of the family for clearance.

Comedy King Dolphy, pumanaw na

Matapos ang may isang buwan na pakikipaglaban sa sakit, pumanaw na nitong Martes ang 83-anyos na Comedy King na si Dolphy.

Dakong 8:34 p.m. nang pumanaw si Dolphy, ayon sa ulat ng GMA News TV's State of the Nation (SONA) with Jessica Soho.

Sa panayam ng SONA kay German "Kuya Germs" Moreno, kaibigan ni Dolphy, sinabi nito na nakumpirma niya ang pagpanaw ng comedy king nang tawagan niya ang apo ng beteranong aktor na si Boy2 Quizon.

Isinugod si Dolphy sa Makati Medical Center at inilagay sa Intensive Care Unit (ICU) noong June 9, matapos na dumaing na nahihirapan itong huminga.

Mula nang maospital, ilang ulit na sumailalim sa dialysis at blood transfusion si Dolphy. Nagkaroon din siya ng mga komplikasyon na dulot ng pulmonya.

Sa naunang panayam sa kanyang anak na si Eric Quizon, sinabi nito na dati nang may sakit na chronic obstructive pulmonary disease ang kanyang ama.

Sa ulat ng 24 Oras nitong Martes, sinabi ni Epi Quizon, anak ni Dolphy, na maituturing nilang milagro ang patuloy na pagbuti ng kalagayan ng kanyang ama.

Pero inamin ni Epi na ilang ulit nang muntikang mawala ang kanyang ama sa ilang linggong pagkakaratay sa ospital.

Dagdag pa niya, may bagong gamot na ginamit sa comedy king para labanan ang pulmonya nito at positibo ang nagiging resulta.

Sinabi rin ni Epi na gusto na raw umuwi ng kanyang ama batay sa buka ng bibig nito.

Ipagdiriwang sana ni Dolphy ang kanyang ika-84 kaarawan sa July 25.

Ang simula ni Dolphy

Bago pasukin ang pelikula, unang nakilala si Dolphy sa teatro sa pagsasayaw ng bodaville kasama ang pumanaw na ring si Bayani Casimiro noong panahon ng ikalawang digmaan pandaigdig.

Kasama ang ama, naghahatid din muna si Dolphy ng pagkain sa Avenue Theater sa Maynila, at natututo ring maglinis ng mga sapatos.

Mula sa pagsasayaw, nabigyan si Dolphy ng break sa pag-arte nang maghanap ng gaganap na testigong Chinese sa drama sa teatro at siya ang napili.

Pumatok ang pakwela ni Dolphy sa naturang palabas at mula noong nakilala siya sa karakter na “Golay" na una niyang naging “screen name."

Unang pelikula bilang “guest appearance" ni Dolphy na may screen name na Rodolfo Quizon ang pelikulang, Dugo ng Bayan noong 1948 at pinagbidahan ni Fernando Poe Sr.

Maituturing big break ni Dolphy sa pelikula ang pagdadala sa kanya ni Pancho Magalona sa Sampaguita Picture, kung saan nakasama siya pelikulang, Isang Sulyap Mo Tita noong 1953.

Sa Isang Sulyap Mo Tita ay ipinaalis na ang pangalan niyang “Golay" at mula noon ay nakilala na siya bilang si “Dolphy."

Isinilang si Dolphy sa Tundo, Maynila noong July 25, 1928. Panganay siyang lalaki sa 10 magkakapatid. Ang kanyang ama na si Melencio Espinosa-Quizon, ay isang ship mechanic at ang kanyang ina ay si Salud Vera Quizon.

Pinasikat niya ang “puruntong short" (short na mahaba) dahil sa karakter ni Dolphy sa TV hit sitcom na “John and Marsha" bilang si John Purontong.

Sa kanyang pagsasayaw, nakapagtrabaho rin si Dolphy (kasama si Bayani) sa Hong Kong at Japan, kung saan tumatagal sila ng hanggang anim na buwan sa bawat kontratang pinipirmahan. Itinuturing ni Dolphy ang sarili na kabilang sa mga unang OFW.

Mayroon 18 anak si Dolphy mula sa anim na babae na kanyang minahal. Ito ay sina Grace Dominguez , anim na anak; Gloria Smith , apat na anak; Baby Smith, apat na anak; Vangie Tagulao, isang anak; Alma Moreno , isang anak; at si Zsa Zsa Padila, isang anak (at isang ampon.

Sa anim na babae, walang napakasalan si Dolphy na itinuturing ng comedy king na kabiguan sa kanyang buhay.

Nagplano sina Dolphy at Zsa Zsa na magpakasal pero hindi ito nangyari dahil tumagal ang pagdinig sa annulment ng kasal ni Zsa Zsa sa kanyang unang asawa.

Taong 1960’s nang itatag ni Dolphy ang kanyang sariling film company na RVQ Production. Unang proyekto nito ang movie version ng hit TV sitcom na Buhay Artista.

Huling naging pelikula ni Dolphy ang Father Jejemon na isinali sa Metro Manila Film Festival noong 2010. Nagkaroon din siya ng special participation sa pelikulang Rosario na kasali rin sa 2010 MMFF.

Noong November 2010, ipinagkaloob ni Pangulong Benigno “Noynoy" Aquino III ang Grand Collar of the Order of the Golden Heart kay Dolphy – ang pinakamataas na pagkilala na ibinibigay ng Pangulo sa isang pribadong mamamayan dahil sa kanyang ambag sa entertainment industry at mga kawang-gawa.

Taong 2008 nang magsama sa pelikula sina Dolphy at ang itinuturing Comedy Prince na si Vic Sotto para Dobol Trobol.

Nakilala rin si Dolphy sa pagganap sa karakter na mga bakla tulad ng Facifica Falayfay (1969); Fefita Fofongay (1973), Sarhento Fofongay, A...ewan (1974); Ang Tatay Kong Nanay (1978) at Markova:Comfort Gay.](2001).

Nakamit ni Dolphy ang kanyang Best Actor award sa Famas noong 1978 sa kanyang pagganap sa pelikulang Omeng Satanasia, na produced ng RVQ Productions.

Pneumonia ni Dolphy, bumalik

Masusi pa ring binabantayan ng mga duktor sa Makati Medical Center ang kalusugan ng Comedy King na si Dolphy matapos bumalik ang pneumonia nito.

Sa ulat ng GMA News 24 Oras nitong Martes, sinabing ito na ang ika-12 ulit na nagkaroon ng pneumonia si Dolphy sa loob ng nakalipas na buwan.

Matagal nang may sakit na chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) o sakit sa baga ang beteranong aktor.

Naging maayos naman umano ang isinagawang blood transfusion at dialysis kay Dolphy nitong Lunes.





Umaasa ang pamilya ni Dolphy na patuloy na bubuti ang kalusugan nito, lalo pa’t ipagdiriwang niya ngayong buwan (Hulyo 25) ang kanyang ika-84 taong kaarawan.

Patuloy naman umanong nakikipag-komunikasyon si Dolphy sa pamamagitan ng pagtaas ng kilay nito at iba pang facial gesture, at maging sa pagpisil ng kamay.

Hindi pa rin makapagsalita si Dolphy dahil sa tubo na inilagay sa kanyang leeg na tumutulong sa kanyang paghinga. - FRJ, GMA News

Senators, VP Call For Conferment Of National Artist Recognition To Dolphy

MANILA, Philippines – It seems that the clamor for Comedy King Dolphy to be declared as National Artist has been revived, with Senators Manny Villar and Pia Cayetano, and Vice President Jejomar Binay expressing their opinions on the matter.

This comes in the midst of news about the Comedy King’s confinement at the Makati Medical Center and being in critical condition.

Villar, calling the veteran actor “one of the few gems of the entertainment industry,” said in a statement issued on June 21 that the recognition should be given to Dolphy because he is “an artist who has helped build a sense of Filipino nationalism through motion picture.”

He added, “But more than the trophies he collected, Dolphy is known as a compassionate man, donating substantial wealth and talent to assist health welfare programs and provide financial assistance to senior actors and those involved in filmmaking including extras, stuntmen, bit players, crews and technical staff.”

The senator believes that Dolphy’s “feat as a comedian will be very hard to replicate,” and that he is a National Artist “in my heart and in the hearts of many Filipinos.”

More, Villar stated that he will be “forever be indebted” to the comedian who campaigned for him during the 2010 presidential elections.

“We are one with the nation in praying for the speedy recovery of Dolphy,” he added.

Villar’s Nacionalista Party co-member Cayetano, meanwhile, told gmanetwork.com also on Thursday, “I think everyone knows that he deserves it. Siyempre meron din nagsasabi na he’s already the national artist in the Filipinos heart and everything but of course it’s always nice to have an official recognition.”

She then urged the public to continue praying for the ailing Comedy King, saying, “Mabigyan pa sana [siya] ng ilang masaganang taon.”

abs-cbnnews.com reported on the same day that Binay, in a statement, “asked concerned groups to act on the nomination of Dolphy immediately.”

“[Dolphy] has given the people so much happiness in his sterling career as an actor, and has spoken to and for the Filipino. For this, he deserves our fervent prayers,” he said.

Meanwhile, earlier the same day, Presidential Spokesman Edwin Lacierda said in another statement, “The President’s thoughts are with Mr. Quizon and his loved ones in these trying times.”

It also noted, “We enjoin the Filipino people to pray for the health of Mr. Rodolfo Quizon Sr., whom the entire nation fondly knows as ‘Dolphy.’ We are united in our intentions for our revered icon of the Philippine entertainment industry.”
