Tributes pour in for 'man on the moon' Armstrong

WASHINGTON -- Tributes poured in Sunday following the death of Neil Armstrong, the humble US astronaut whose "small step" on the moon captivated the world and came to embody the wonder of space exploration.

Armstrong, who died Saturday at the age of 82 from complications following heart surgery earlier this month, inspired generations to reach for the stars and etched his name next to one of the great milestones of human discovery.

The grainy black-and-white broadcast of Armstrong's moon walk on July 20, 1969 was seen by some 500 million people, his words capturing the promise of the still-young space age and briefly uniting a planet split by the Cold War.

"That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind," the earthbound heard Armstrong say, though he later claimed that an "a" before the word "man" had been lost in transmission.

US President Barack Obama, who was just two weeks short of his eighth birthday when the historic mission succeeded, said Armstrong had "delivered a moment of human achievement that will never be forgotten."

Armstrong's family praised him as a "reluctant American hero," saying they hoped his legacy would encourage young people "to be willing to explore and push the limits and to selflessly serve a cause greater than themselves."

The lunar pioneer was decorated by 17 countries and received a slew of US honors, but was never comfortable with his worldwide fame and shied away from the limelight.

In a rare television interview in 2005, Armstrong said he did not deserve the attention he received for being the first man on the moon, just steps ahead of fellow Apollo 11 astronaut Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin.

"I wasn't chosen to be first. I was just chosen to command that flight. Circumstance put me in that particular role," he said.

Armstrong even stopped signing memorabilia after learning his autographs were being sold at exorbitant prices.

John Glenn, the first American to orbit Earth, recalled Armstrong's legendary humility, telling CNN that the astronaut "didn't feel that he should be out huckstering himself."

Aldrin said he had hoped that he, Armstrong and Michael Collins, the third astronaut on the mission, would have met up in 2019 for celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11.

"Whenever I look at the moon, it reminds me of the moment over four decades ago when I realized that even though we were farther away from Earth than two humans had ever been, we were not alone," Aldrin said.

On Sunday, more praise poured in from world leaders and fellow astronauts, with French Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault saying that Armstrong's "small step" had "realized the dream of generations of inventors, scientists, artists, poets or simply amateurs, of the beauties of space."

European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said he "vividly" remembered the night Armstrong and Aldrin landed on the "Sea of Tranquility," saying Armstrong had "left an eternal footprint on our memories."

Richard Branson, the British tycoon who is launching a space tourism program, hailed Armstrong as "an extraordinary individual."

Born in Wapakoneta, Ohio on August 5, 1930, Armstrong had an early fascination with aircraft and worked at a nearby airport when he was a teenager. He received his pilot's license on his 16th birthday.

A US Navy aviator, he flew 78 missions in the Korean War.

Armstrong joined NASA's predecessor agency, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, in 1955.

As a research pilot at NASA's Flight Research Center in Edwards, California, he flew on many pioneering high-speed aircraft, eventually flying over 200 different models, including helicopters, gliders, jets and rockets.

He reached astronaut status in 1962, and was assigned as command pilot for the Gemini 8 mission, during which he performed the first successful docking of two vehicles in space.

After retiring from NASA in 1971, Armstrong taught aerospace engineering at the University of Cincinnati for nearly a decade and served on the boards of several companies, including Lear Jet, United Airlines and Marathon Oil.

In announcing his death, Armstrong's family said they had a simple request to people in memory of Armstrong's life.

"Honor his example of service, accomplishment and modesty, and the next time you walk outside on a clear night and see the moon smiling down at you, think of Neil Armstrong and give him a wink," it said.

Nation in 'days of mourning' for Robredo

President Benigno Aquino III led the country in mourning for Interior Secretary Jesse Robredo as he proclaimed “National Days of Mourning” until Robredo’s internment.

Thorough Proclamation No. 460 s. 2012, the President ordered all government offices worldwide to fly the flag at half-mast for six days in honor of the six-term Naga City Mayor.

“As provided for by law, for a period of six (6) days, the national flag shall be flown at half-mast from sunrise to sunset in all government buildings and installations in the Philippines and in our posts abroad,” the President said in the proclamation.

The Department of Education had earlier announced that all flags in public schools and its offices will be flown at half-mast.

Furthermore, the Palace created a committee that will handle Robredo’s state funeral.
Transportation Secretary Mar Roxas confimred on Tuesday morning that Robredo had died in Staturday's plane crash.

He said the DILG Secretary’s body was found inside the crashed plane, 800 meters off Masbate’s shore and 180 feet below the sea surface.

Retrieval operations for the bodies of pilot Jessup Bahinting and co-pilot Kshitiz Chand had been suspended on Tuesday afternoon, but will resume on Wednesday.

Robredo's aide, Senior Inspector Jun Abrasado, was the lone survivor of the plane crash.
The government website also set up a tribute page in its Official Gazette for Robredo. The page features messages gratitude and sympathy for the late secretary and his family. — DVM, GMA News

Tributes pour in for late DILG Secretary Jesse Robredo

Tributes poured in on Tuesday for the late Interior Secretary Jesse Robredo after authorities confirmed his death in a plane crash off Masbate.

Transportation Secretary Mar Roxas confirmed on Tuesday morning that the body of Robredo was found at 8:15 a.m. Tuesday, 800 meters from the shore of Masbate.

In a press briefing, Roxas said Robredo’s body was found at a depth of 180 feet inside the fuselage of the small Piper plane that carried him and three others on Saturday.

"Yung unang sumabak na mga tech divers 'yung mga puti na nakita natin kahapon, si Matt at ang kanyang team na dalawang babae. At 8:15, kumpirmado na 'yung isa sa mga katawan ay 'yung kay Sec. Jess Robredo," Roxas said.

Retired archbishop Oscar Cruz called for a hero’s burial for Robredo, whose body was retrieved from the fuselage of the plane.

“Maraming pasasalamat at natagpuan din. (Sana) mabigyan siya ng disenteng paglilibing, sana malagay sa Libingan ng Mga Bayani,” Cruz said in an interview over radio dzBB.

Cruz had lauded Robredo for not abusing his powers and for remaining untainted by corruption.

As Secretary of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), Robredo supervised the Philippine National Police, Bureau of Fire Protection, and Bureau of Jail Management and Penology.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday extended its condolences to the family of Robredo, saying in a statement: "We join the Filipino nation in mourning the passing of Secretary Robredo. We send our condolences to his bereaved family."
The high court acknowledged Robredo's role as an "indispensable partner in judicial reform."
"He was a member of the Justice Sector Coordinating Council and ex officio Chair of the National Police Commission, whose Technical Committee on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice System includes representation from the Court pillar," the SC said.
Created in April 2010, the JSCC is a joint effort among the SC, the DILG and the Department of Justice, seeking to create a coordinated approach to justice sector policy making, planning, and operations.
Before being appointed as secretary of the DILG in 2010, Robredo served for more than 18 years starting in 1988 as mayor of Camarines Sur's Naga City, which was named by Asiaweek as one of the "Most Improved Cities in Asia" in 1999.

Marilyns from around the world meet for Monroe tributes

LOS ANGELES - When a faux Hugh Hefner, clad in his trademark smoking jacket, finishes his karaoke song, he turns to Marilyn Monroe and asks: "Do you want to marry me?"

The Marilyn look-alike -- Canadian Nadine Banville -- was part of a recent tribute to the iconic movie star, who died 50 years ago Sunday, held at a hotel just two blocks away from Hollywood Boulevard.

Some 200 Monroe fans from as far away as Italy and Australia met there to honor the real Marilyn Monroe, who was just 36 and at the height of her career when she succumbed to a barbiturate overdose.

"I've had people say that these Immortal Marilyn gatherings have been the highlight of their life," said Mary Sims, president of the fan club.

"Some of us come from all over the world and Marilyn brought us all together," she said, her eyes filling with tears. "I get a little emotional," she apologized.

Over the weekend, fans will honor Monroe's memory at several events, including a banquet at the 20th Century Fox studios and, on Sunday, a memorial service at a Los Angeles Presbyterian church.

Other tributes have already taken place.

At a pool party, women dressed like extras from the 1960s hit show "Mad Men." Several wore bright red lipstick and dangled long cigarettes from their fingers.

Guests included Ernesto Galindez, who claims to have the largest collection of Marilyn memorabilia in his native Venezuela. His trove comprises checks and other documents signed by the diva, as well -- or so he claims -- all of the magazine covers featuring the star.

Freelance writer Leslee Kasperozoicz said she attributes the enduring interest in Marilyn's life to the fact that the star was able to blend the beauty and fickle behavior of a diva with a heavy dose of vulnerability.

"We have so much in common in certain ways" said Kasperozoicz, 34, donning a long 1950s-style black dress with white polka dots.

"That's true for most fans. They see a little bit of themselves in her. Her insecurity, her struggles to try to be herself in the face of all the pressure on her, her humanity is such a big thing for the fans," Kasperozoicz said.

One of the event stars was a Marilyn impersonator from the Netherlands who attracted a crowd of adoring fans. Decked out in a single-piece light blue swimsuit, she flashed sultry smiles in a perfect Marilyn imitation.

Another Marilyn impersonator -- or "tribute artist" as they like to be known -- wore a green velvet dress, a replica of the gown the star sported in "River of No Return" (1954).

The woman gave an excellent rendition of "I'm Gonna File My Claim," the song Monroe sang in the movie.

"It's my passion," said Banville, a 35 year-old from Ottowa, the Canadian capital.

"I fell in love with her when I started to study the character because I'm a singer. She's an amazing person, there's nobody like her in the world -- ever," Banville said.

Her boyfriend, Morgan Blackbyrne, dressed up as Playboy magazine millionaire Hugh Hefner, was the one who sang the karaoke song before popping the big question.

"Of course!" Banville answered as the crowd of Marilyns sighed adoringly.

10 ways to pay tribute to Dolphy

Rodolfo "Dolphy" Quizon may have passed away, but he lives on in the memories of countless Filipinos whose days he brightened up with his funny skits and brilliant performances.
That Dolphy will be most missed is made evident by the thousands of messages that continue to pour out.
Here are 10 ways to pay tribute to the man who made us all laugh and smile.

1. Smile, though you heart is breaking, or so goes a line in a popular song.
When Jessica Soho asked Dolphy how he would like to be remembered, he answered simply, "with a smile on their faces."
"Basta gusto ko nakangiti lang. Kapag nababanggit yung pangalan mo, ngumingiti ka, may naiwanang ngiti sayo. 'I remember Mang Dolphy.' Kaysa doon sa 'Bwisit na 'yan!'
2. Wear your puruntong in his honor.
You can give your skinny jeans a break and try something that will give your legs a lot more freedom. The puruntong shorts take its name from Dolphy's character in the TV series "John En Marsha." Puruntong shorts are great for the beach, but since this is a tropical country, they're comfortable for just about anywhere.
3. Learn some life lessons from the veteran comedian.
Making people laugh may be Dolphy's expertise, but he's also pretty good when it comes to the serious stuff. His was a long and colorful life, and much can be learned from how he lived. SPOT.ph lists 10 wise moves from Dolphy, from career smarts to dealing with exes.
4. Have a Dolphy movie marathon.
With over 200 titles to choose from, Dolphy has left us with so much to remember him by. Pretend it's the 1950s with "Sa Isang Sulyap Mo Tita," or see him as Facifica Falayfay in the 1960s. Go back to the 70s with "John en Marsha," the 80's with "Haw Haw de Karabaw," or the 90s with "Da Best in da West." See Dolphy in his award-winning role in "Markova: Comfort Gay," and in his last film, "Father Jejemon."
5. Be humble.
Despite what Dolphy had achieved in his career, he remained grounded. People call him Comedy King, but he had always reiterated that people call him “comedian” instead.
"Ayoko. Parang nayayabangan ako. Isipin ng mga tao, ako talaga ang nagpursiging maging Comedy King. Pero hindi, talagang nagamay na ng tao na tinatawag ako ng ganun. So nandun na, siyempre hindi mo na maaalis 'yun," Dolphy said in an interview on Kapuso Mo Jessica Soho.
6. Put some records on.
According to his memoir, Dolphy liked Frank Sinatra, Doris Day, and Ella Fitzgerald.
7. Wear red for firsts – the first day of the week, the month or the year.
"Nakuha ko siguro ang red sa Chinese Feng Shui. Pula raw, maganda ‘pag Monday, first day of the week, o kung first day of the month or first day of the year," he said in his memoir "Dolphy: Hindi Ko Ito Narating Mag-isa."
8. Love your own language.
Dolphy believed there is no shame in speaking in Tagalog, even if many college graduates prefer to speak in English. "Basta 'tina-Tagalog ko sila pag hindi ko naiintindihan. E, ano ba'ng pakialam ko, kung mag-e-English ka diyan, nakakaintindi ka naman ng Tagalog, 'di managalog ka. Tayong mga Pilipino, masyadong pintasero. Hindi ako nahihiyang mag-English kapag 'Kano ang kausap ko, e, maski magkamali ako, okay lang. Mayro'n pa ring communication, at nagkakaintindihan. Ang Pilipino, iniintindi 'yong mali mo sa English; 'yon ang napansin ko," he said in his memoir.
9. Travel. See the world while you still can.
Dolphy described his younger self as "layas." "Gusto ko talaga, kaya ako sumasama sa kung saan-saan. Maski konti ang bayad, sumasama ako, makakita lang ng bagong lugar.”
"Pag biyahe ka rin nang biyahe, marami kang matututunan. Mahilig nga akong mag-observe, kung papaano 'yong right conduct, nakikita ko e. At kahit minsan, sumasablay ka, mayro’n namang magsasabi sa iyo kung ano 'yong tama. Pati na rin ang tamang paggamit ng kubyertos," he said in his memoir.
10. Lastly, don’t take life too seriously.
Live, love and laugh. It's only fitting to honor a veteran comedian by laughing at his jokes. "Kayo ba ay galing sa opisina, at pagod? Wala kayong gagawin kung' di mag relax, maupo sa sofa, mag-alis ng sapatos, magsuot ng tsinelas, at magsalin ng Banayad Whiskey.

Britney Spears Walks Off The X Factor Set After Contestant's Tribute

For Britney Spears, listening to an X Factor hopeful perform a cover of one of her songs may have been a total drag – literally.

During Monday's auditions in Greensboro, N.C., Spears stormed off the set as a man, dressed partially as a woman, rocked through one of her hits, "(You Drive Me) Crazy."

Spears, 30, looked stunned throughout the performance, as fellow judge L.A. Reid patted her on the back. Judges Demi Lovato and Simon Cowell also couldn't contain their reactions, as they covered their faces with their hands.

And neither could the crowd – but they seemed to be instant fans of the audition.

While Reid and Lovato followed the pop star off the set, Cowell stayed behind. "I don't think she quite understood your tribute," he told the singer, who wore cat glasses, a bedazzled jean jacket, boots and his hair tucked in a bun.

"I had to fight real hard to get here," the tearful singer told the judges, adding that he was recently on welfare and nearly missed his X Factor call because he couldn't afford his phone bill.

"I really respect the tribute," Spears said when she returned to the judges' table. "It was really nice."
