Zac Efron says new ‘Baywatch’ movie to be raunchy comedy

LONDON | Former teen idol Zac Efron, who rose to fame in the Disney “High School Musical” franchise, says the upcoming “Baywatch” movie in which he will co-star with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson will be almost nothing like the 1990s TV series about lifeguards.

Although the movie is in preliminary stages, Efron said he was looking forward to it departing from the TV show that starred David Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson and almost always featured a rescue at sea, no matter how tangential to the plot.

“It’s going to be R-rated and it’s going to be badass,” Efron told Reuters, referring to the Hollywood classification for movies containing adult material.

Efron, who was in London for the European premiere on Tuesday of his new movie “We Are Your Friends”, in which he plays a DJ who gets caught up in the drug-and-booze-fuelled world of the California party and club scene, said the evolving “Baywatch” movie would skew towards comedy and raunch.

“I think we’re going like pretty big with it and I don’t think it’s going to be much like the old ‘Baywatch’ to be honest. I think we’re going to kind of reinvent it in a big way, and he (Johnson) has big plans for it. I know he’s very ambitious.”

Efron also responded to a tweet sent by Johnson, who doubles as a producer for the film, which read: “BIG NEWS: Welcoming my dude @ZacEfron to #BAYWATCH. Our movie will be big, fun and RATED R… Like me when I drink.”

Efron replied saying: “So stoked brother – baby oil for 2 plz.”

Zac Efron raves about the Philippines on ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show’

It’s one thing for Zac Efron to say that he loves it in the Philippines while still being in the Philippines. That’s simply good public relations.

But when he still keeps saying the same thing on American national television on no less than the top-rated “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” that is more than public relations, it’s genuine affection.

In the video of the interview segment posted on YouTube by “The Ellen Show” on October 3 (October 4 Manila time), a very animated and visibly excited Zac talked about his recent trip here, particularly his memorable stop at Legaspi City in Albay that preceded his Penshoppe fan conference last Saturday.

“We had lunch on top of a volcano!” Zac exclaimed as he recalled his trip to Mayon Volcano, which his group explored via a helicopter and the all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) used to guide visiting tourists in the area.











The most surprising thing for the sensational young actor best known for his breakout role as campus heartthrob Troy Bolton in Disney’s “High School Musical” franchise, however, was not finding himself on “top” of an active volcano but being recognized by Bicolana natives in the area.

“It was two super cute little girls that just showed up. I couldn’t believe it. We hadn’t seen a face in like 30 miles and we’re on the ATVs and out of nowhere, they just come running out, jumping and screaming,” he recalled.

The “two super cute girls” did what thousands of young girls failed to do during Zac’s Penshoppe Fan Conference that took place last Saturday before he left the country – see their idol up close and have their photos taken with him.

Because of the video and subsequent fan reaction, Zac Efron is again a trending topic on Twitter.

Zac Efron charms full house crowd in fan conference

Cameras were not allowed at Zac Efron’s “Penshoppe Fan Conference 2012” Saturday night at the Mall of Asia Arena.

“Nyakk bawal ang kahit ano camera sa zac efron fan con ng penshoppe,” posted veteran blogger Azrael Coladilla in his Facebook account. “Sm arena policy eh…kaya boom!,” he added in response to his friends’ comments.

It didn’t seem to matter who came up with the idea of banning cameras for this event, though. That certainly did not stop several fans, including celebrities like Anne Curtis, Isabel Oli, Mikael Daez, Andi Manzano and Kiray Celis, from taking snapshots of the full house event and posting them right away on Twitter via Instagram.

“God is good! Thank you to the MOA Arena Family for the last minute VIP tickets!!!! Waaaah!,” tweeted FAMAS Best Actress awardee Anne Curtis before later adding, “I feel like I’m 17 again waiting for @ZacEfron” and “Zac I love you!!!!”

“Just got home from ZAC EFRON’s fancon! Gwapo mo, baby! Yaaay!,” Kiray added in her own tweet past midnight Sunday.

Judging from the trending topics, Zac Efron and #PENSHOPPEFanCon2012, fans were very pleased with what they witnessed and were more than happy to share their elation on Twitter.

Why shouldn’t they? The newest international endorser of the popular fashion retail brand is hands down the most popular member of the Penshoppe All Stars, which also include previous Manila visitors Ed Westwick, Ian Somerhalder, Leighton Meester and Mario Maurer.



Best known for his breakout role as Troy Bolton in Disney’s “High School Musical” TV movie and its two equally successful sequels, Zac is a Hollywood A-lister who has already starred in three movies this year, namely “The Lucky One,” the film adaptation of the bestselling novel by Nicholas Sparks, the ensemble drama “The Paperboy”, which competed for the Palme D’Or in the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, and “At Any Price,” another drama that competed at the 69th Venice International Film Festival.

And as fans found out at his FanCon, Zac is also the ultimate crowd pleaser. After walking the runway, a visibly overwhelmed Zac exclaimed, “It’s hot in here!” and immediately drew screams as he promptly threw his leather jacket into the crowd’s waiting arms.

The pandering did not stop there as Zac referred to “High School Musical” co-star and ex-squeeze Vanessa Hudgens as his “first Filipino girlfriend” during his onstage interview with Boy Abunda.

When Abunda asked, “Are you thinking about getting married?,” more deafening shrieks followed when Zac replied, “I think my wife is already out here!”

As the conversation turned to some of his recent movie roles, the 24-year old actor turned out to be quite the conversationalist and sounded like someone who is genuinely sincere and truly devoted to his craft.

On how he got his role in “High School Musical,” Zac said he auditioned for the part in the theater and met Vanessa right then and there.

“We clicked instantly and we started going through the audition together. We were a group of 40 boys and girls and we had to sing on the piano. They were tapping people and we didn’t know what that meant until they said, those who got tapped may now leave. We were asked to sing, dance and play basketball. At the end, it was just me and Vanessa who were left,” he revealed.

His role as Link Larkin in the film, “Hairspray” required him to do a little more research on the ’60s as he wasn’t born in that era. “I watched a lot of the Broadway show as well as a lot of Elvis over and over. It was really fun,” he admitted.

On dancing with Michelle Pfeiffer in “New Year’s Eve,” Zac said practicing their steps were not necessary. “We just had to do a lot of dancing. I had to shake up Michelle (Pfeiffer)’s character. She turned out to be more lovely.”

And that intimate scene with Taylor Schilling in “The Lucky One”? “The sex scene wasn’t difficult. We wanted to make it as real. It’s awkward talking about this,” he said laughing.

Of course, Zac once again found a way to flirt with the crowd and get them going anew by re-delivering the film’s famous line: “You should be kissed every day, every hour, every minute.”

For his latest film, “The Paperboy,” he only has good things to say about co-star Nicole Kidman. “Nicole is amazing. I’d tell her to come down here and see you guys, too,” he noted.



“I love the Philippines!” he once again declared to another round of screams. Zac’s Penshoppe Fan Con is the culmination of an almost week-long stay in the country that saw him fall in love with our very own Mayon Volcano in Legaspi City in Albay, Bicol.

Zac Efron arrives in Manila ahead of fashion event

Hollywood actor Zachary “Zac” David Efron arrived at the NAIA terminal 1 at 10:17AM on Wednesday ahead of a promotional event for local clothing line Penshoppe.

The star of the Disney Channel original movie “High School Musical” was accompanied by his father David Efron and two others who arrived on board Cathay Pacific flight CX907 from Hong Kong.




“Nice to be here. I love the Philippines. This is so awesome,” Zac Efron sai told the media at the arrival immigration hall.

Security was tight as six airport policemen escorted the actor to his car waiting curbside at the arrival area.

The office of Sen. Edgardo Angara requested on Tuesday that special treatment be accorded Efron’s party of four and that an officer be assigned to attend to their immigration formalities and allow them to exit through the airport’s backdoor.

However, airport immigration personnel said that only the top five Philippine government officials are allowed such privileges, including ramp access in going in and out of the terminal.

Efron was seen presenting his passport at the immigration counter of the airport arrival area.

Immigration said that, per protocol, the top five government officials are the President of the Republic, Vice President, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Efron was fetched at the NAIA customs area by Joyce Ramirez of Publicity firm PR Asia Worldwide, publicist for Penshoppe, who then led police and security escorts in whisking Efron away to a waiting SUV convoy.




Efron will spend the next two days on a sightseeing tour with his father, who had visited the country several times before.

Sources said the actor will visit Misibis Bay in Albay to experience wildlife interaction with whale sharks. He will also view the famous Mount Mayon in Legaspi.

On Saturday, September 29, he is scheduled to appear at the Penshoppe fan conference at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Zac Efron to tour PH, see whale sharks before fashion event

One Hollywood celebrity who believes it’s really more fun in the Philippines is Zac Efron.

The 24-year-old actor will hold a fan conference on September 29 at the Mall of Asia Arena on behalf of the clothing line Penshoppe, but he will arrive in the country much earlier to go around and visit some tourist spots.

This was revealed to News5 and InterAksyon by Penshoppe CEO Bernie Liu.

“He’s been looking forward [to this trip]. His father has been to our country for many times! And he’s only heard good stories about the Philippines,” Bernie said.

Penshoppe brand director Alex Mendoza is helping fix Zac’s itinerary. “Meron siyang iikuting places na makikita niya talaga ang Pilipinas,” Alex said.

He declined to reveal specific details but said the actor plans to engage in some watersports and see some whale sharks.

“Gusto ata niya makita yung mga butanding e. Ewan ko lang. Marami nang lugar ang butanding ngayon kaya ewan ko lang kung saan,” he said.

Fans who plan to leave Zac alone on his sightseeing activities can simply attend the Penshoppe fan conference for a chance to meet the “High School Musical” star.

While the VIP seats have all been sold out, they can still avail of patron (P3500), lower box (P2500), upper box (P1200) and general admission (P800) seats by simply buying Penshoppe products.

Zac Efron to hold fan conference in Manila next month

Hollywood star Zac Efron is set to hold a fan conference in Manila next month, courtesy of a clothing brand he endorses.

Efron, the matinee idol who starred in three “High School Musical” movies, will headline fashion retailer Penshoppe’s FanCon 2012 at 7PM on September 29 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.

Penshoppe’s publicist, PR Asia Worldwide, first posted the news on its Twitter account months ago but revealed no specific date for Efron’s arrival.

Then it tweeted earlier this week, ”UPDATE: Zac Efron CONFIRMED to visit the Philippines. Says he wants to learn to waterski and can’t wait to meet his Filipino fans #news.”

Tickets to the event are free with every single-receipt purchase made at participating Penshoppe SM outlets from September 1 to 23.

Zac Efron Claims He's 'Out Of Practice' Doing Love Scenes

MANILA, Philippines – Zac Efron embraced a sexy, romantic lead role in the “The Lucky One” where he falls for Taylor Schilling’s character. In the plot, the former “High School Musical” star is all grown up as US Marine Sergeant Logan Thibaul.

In yet another film adaptation of a Nicholas Sparks novel, Efron’s character “returns from his third tour of duty in Iraq, with the one thing he credits with keeping him alive – a photograph he found of a woman he doesn’t even know. Discovering her name is Beth (Schilling) and where she lives, he shows up at her door, and ends up taking a job at her family-run local kennel. A romance develops between them, giving Logan hope that Beth could be much more than his good luck charm.”

Efron said both Logan and Beth had romance thrown over the back burner for some time. So when they sparks started to fly between them, getting physical was a comfortable comedy.

“I mean, in the scene, they are out of practice. And they’re totally in love and having fun and sort of doing it again for the first time. And I think that was easy to do. That’s sort of how we were in the moment anyway. So, a lot of that fit,” said Efron.

Schilling pondered more over scenes that exposed her character to her feelings. “I spent a little bit more time in preparation for her emotional journey and the experiences that Beth was having with Logan and how that was relating to the rest of her life. It’s interesting. It really did take more space for me to kind of uncover where she was coming from and where she was going and how this man was opening her up to true love finally after being so guarded for so long and having given up.

“The love scenes were a really natural outgrowth of where she was at that point in her story. And the physicality of it was pretty simple. Zac and I were really close at that point. We’d been working together and I really trusted him. And he’s a class act. So, it was really fun and comfortable.”

Efron had the most difficult filming time while shooting in Afghanistan. The intimate scenes seemed like a walk in the park compared to the battle-geared takes.

“I think the hardest scenes stuff to film, by far, were all the scenes in Afghanistan at the very beginning. Just wearing that equipment, all the tactical stuff, and clearing that room was really challenging. And it was the middle of the night. It was like 3:00 in the morning. It was freezing. There was rubble everywhere, people screaming. Really, really talented actors all around us, and I was controlling a whole unit of Marines, real Marines. And my stress was through the roof. I really wanted this part to be authentic. So, that was the hardest part for me,” said Efron.

The 24-year-old actor felt that bringing out a character from a book does not fully help an actor to essay the part into reality. “I think it’s somewhere in between. There are specific moments that come out of the book and out of the writing that are really an examination into a character’s thought process and what’s going on that are very fun to read, and offer all kinds of different explanations and little things that you can think about during the scene. But, also, you have to look in the context of the script. You can’t have all kinds of wild other things coming in.”

Schilling, 27, echoed, “Yeah, I agree with that. I think for me it’s a little bit more based on the script and just what’s happening and gathering all the information you can, and then kind of letting it go and just being present.”

Derek Ramsay finds Zac Efron ‘cool,’ ‘down-to-earth’

MANILA, Philippines – While local showbiz watchers were making a fuss about his jump to the Kapatid network, Derek Ramsay was having a grand time on a much-needed break. In fact, he’s had quite a memorable encounter with young American singer-actor Zac Efron during the former’s brief vacation in Australia.

Derek posted his photo with Zac, one of the stars of the hit US TV show/movie “High School Musical” and lead actor in the upcoming film “The Lucky One,” on his Twitter account last April 8. In a recent press conference, the Filipino-British actor shared how the meeting went.

"He’s a really cool guy, very down-to-earth. ‘Yong ano lang, maraming bodyguards… Kasama ko siya, naglaro kami ng golf… We had a lot of chit-chat, played golf, and it was a good day,” said Derek.

He likewise enthused that it was Zac who approached him first and commended his golf skills.

"Tapos sabi niya, ‘You kinda look familiar.’ Sabi ko, ‘No, you look familiar.’ I thought he was just being diplomatic and nice," he added.

Derek deemed that he might’ve looked familiar to Zac because of his former affiliation with Penshoppe, which reportedly tapped the latter as its endorser just recently.

"I used to be with the Penshoppe family so maybe he’s also seen pictures. I don’t know... wishful thinking," he related.

Overall, Derek found his Easter break in Australia a “relief.”

"I left the country with a smile on my face. Slightly wiped off because of the negative stuff. But then, all the positive stuff came in. Right now, wala namang negative na nangyayari na,” the actor said.

He even tweeted last April 9 about his return: “Back home! Tnx very much @mkim0739 tnx to everyone I met in Sydney.”

Derek signed a three-year exclusive contract with TV5 last April 10. For his initial assignment, Derek will host “The Amazing Race Philippines.”
