Starbucks in Westeros? HBO speaks up on 'Game of Thrones' set blunder

HOLLYWOOD — With two episodes of HBO's wildly popular medieval fantasy saga "Game of Thrones" to go, puzzled fans took to social media on Monday after heroine Daenerys Targaryen was joined at a wooden banquet table by a rogue to-go coffee cup.

Jokes, spoofs and critiques quickly followed the anachronistic appearance of the beverage -- taken to be a Starbucks coffee by many who noticed -- in the fourth episode of the eighth and final season.

"Seriously, they have Starbucks in Winterfell," one commenter wrote on Twitter, while others lamented the slip-up after waiting two years for the eighth season to air.

Yet another tweeted a redrawn logo of the American coffee chain with the title changed to "Winterfell coffee" and the wolf's head sigil of the Starks, one of the noble families at the center of the series.

HBO spoke up as the blunder went viral, tweeting that "the latte that appeared in the episode was a mistake" and playfully adding that Daenerys -- played by British actress Emilia Clarke -- had ordered an herbal tea.

Meanwhile, executive producer Bernie Caulfield told WNYC radio she couldn't believe the error, saying that "our on-set prop people and decorators are so on it 1,000 percent."

"We're sorry!" she said. "If that's the worst thing that they're finding, we're in good shape."

HBO called it a "craft services coffee cup" but Caulfield echoed a theme spread widely on Twitter, speculating that Westeros -- the fictional continent where the action takes place -- "was the first place to actually have Starbucks."

Though he hadn't personally watched Sunday's episode, entitled "The Last of the Starks," art director Hauke Richter told Variety magazine: "Things can get forgotten on set."

Starbucks seized the opportunity to capitalize on the faux pas, evoking its popular dragon fruit-based thirst-quencher in a statement that read: "We're surprised she didn't order a Dragon Drink."

It was not immediately clear if Daenerys, known in the show as the Mother of Dragons for her mastery over the winged creatures of legend, has ever tried coffee.

Season eight began airing on April 14, nearly 20 months after the seventh season's conclusion. The last ever episode will be shown on May 19.

‘Game of Thrones’ star breaks silence over controversial sexy scenes

MANILA, Philippines — Fans of HBO’s “Game of Thrones” fans were shocked after Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) had a steamy scene with Gendry Baratheon (Joe Dempsie).
Social media erupted with discussions about the scene, with netizens saying they were not prepared for the young lady assassin having a love scene with her friend.

Maisie took to Twitter to address reactions from fans.
“If u feel uncomfortable just know that my mother and my step dad and my 2 sisters and my 4 brothers have all probably watched this too ahahakillmeehehe,” Maisie wrote.
Arya and Gendry have been friends since the earlier parts of the series. The two characters slept together before the Night King and his army of dead attack Winterfell.
“I want to know what it feels like before I die,” Arya told Gendry before doing the deed.
Maisie’s age was reportedly one of the most searched keywords in Google after the episode was released.
Arya’s character is already 18 years old while Maisie is 22 years old.
Sophie Turner, who plays Arya’s sister Sansa Stark in the series, took to Instagram to troll her friend about the scene. She posted a video of herself sipping wine.
“In honor of Easter, I guess ‘Game of Thrones’ wanted to have a little storyline of a little Easter bunny hop, hop, hoppin’ into that pussaayyyyyy,” Sophie said about the video.

New Netflix series 'Insatiable' faces fat-shaming, homophobia accusations

NEW YORK, United States — Netflix's new series "Insatiable," hitting screens Friday, was touted by the streaming service as a dark comedy meant to spark debate on society's ills.

Instead, critics have slammed it as fat-shaming, homophobic and denigrating to transgender people.

The offbeat show follows the story of overweight teen Patty, who is mocked and bullied incessantly until she has an accident that requires her jaw be wired shut -- which causes her to shed significant weight.

With her new svelte figure, she vows to seek revenge on all those who attacked her, notably by participating in beauty contests.

The trailer prompted fierce backlash from critics accusing the show of body-shaming.

It perpetuates "not only the toxicity of diet culture, but the objectification of women's bodies," read a petition launched last month.

With the show's release on Friday, the petition -- which calls for the series' cancellation -- had more than 229,400 signatures.

Some people also skewered the show for the way it portrayed homosexuality, including apparently making light of Patty's best friend Nonnie for her repressed desire.

In another scene, a young girl who accidentally releases a nude photo of herself says she initially "figured everyone would think I'm a slut."

"Now they think I'm a lesbian and that's way worse," she says.

And in another scene, Patty and a transgender woman compare being fat to being transgender, saying they both aspire to change their bodies.

"At the very least, it will be a conversation starter," said Alyssa Milano, who stars in the show.

"People bring with them their own emotional history and that's what makes art amazing and TV entertaining. I'm completely aware that it's not a show for everybody but we're really proud of what we did."

Netflix's vice president of original series, Cindy Holland, said the series explores issues "satirically, in a very over-the-top way."

Lauren Gussis, who created the show, called it "a cautionary tale about how damaging it can be to believe the outsides are more important -- to judge without going deeper."

"Please give the show a chance," she said.

NBC News fires ‘Today’ co-host Matt Lauer for sexual misconduct

NEW YORK | NBC News fired Matt Lauer, the popular host of its “Today” morning show, on Wednesday after a female colleague accused him of inappropriate sexual behavior, the network said, making him the latest rich and powerful man to be felled by such accusations.

His termination sent shockwaves through U.S. morning television, where Lauer has been a fixture since becoming a “Today” anchor in 1997 and went on to become one of NBC’s highest-paid personalities, earning $20 million a year.

The married 59-year-old news star was the latest public figure to be embroiled in accusations of sexual misconduct that have recently struck down high-profile men in entertainment, politics and media.

Just hours later, U.S. radio host Garrison Keillor said he had been fired by Minnesota Public Radio over an accusation of inappropriate behavior.

The complaint made by an unnamed female colleague on Monday night was a “clear violation” by Lauer of the company’s standards, NBC News chairman Andrew Lack said in a statement.

“While it is the first complaint about his behavior in the over twenty years he’s been at NBC News, we were also presented with reason to believe this may not have been an isolated incident,” Lack said.

The network issued a second statement in response to a report in the Hollywood trade publication Variety that said several women had complained to the network about Lauer’s behavior.

“We can say unequivocally, that, prior to Monday night, current NBC News management was never made aware of any complaints about Matt Lauer’s conduct,” an NBC spokeswoman said.

Lauer’s agent Ken Lindner did not respond to requests for comment.

The news was announced by “Today” co-anchors Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb at the start of the talk show, a staple of U.S. morning television for more than six decades that, NBC says, averages more than 4 million viewers.

“We just learned this moments ago just this morning,” Guthrie said, visibly shaken. “As I‘m sure you can imagine we are devastated.”

Lack’s statement did not say who made the accusation, but promised that NBC News would cover Lauer’s firing in “as transparent a manner as we can.”

The woman had met with New York Times reporters on Monday before meeting with NBC’s human resources and legal departments that evening to share her allegation, the Times reported, saying that she said she was not ready then to publicly identify herself.

Her Washington-based lawyer, Ari Wilkenfeld, said the meeting with NBC officials lasted several hours.

“In fewer than 35 hours, NBC investigated and removed Mr. Lauer,” Wilkenfeld wrote in a statement. “Our impression at this point is that NBC acted quickly, as all companies should, when confronted with credible allegations of sexual misconduct in the workplace.”

The complaint said the sexual misconduct occurred while Lauer and the female colleague were covering the 2014 Sochi winter Olympics in Russia and continued after the Games, NBC News reporter Stephanie Gosk said on air.

An NBC representative did not respond to a request for more details.

Comcast Corp, the largest U.S. cable television company, owns NBCUniversal. Its shares rose 2.4 percent to $37.13.

“Today” earned $509 million in advertising revenue last year, more than any of its competitors, New York-based analysts Kantar Media said.

Lauer joined “Today” in 1994 and has interviewed presidents George Bush and Barack Obama and broadcast from seven Olympic Games. He had been due to join his co-hosts for the nationally-televised lighting of the giant Christmas tree at New York City’s Rockefeller Center on Wednesday night.

According to Fortune Magazine, he signed a two-year deal in 2016 that would pay him $20 million per year.

U.S. President Donald Trump responded with messages on Twitter calling for some of Lauer’s colleagues to be fired too, and adding to his recent attacks against U.S. news outlets for their reporting on his administration.

“Wow,” Trump wrote about Lauer. “But when will the top executives at NBC & Comcast be fired for putting out so much Fake News.”

During the 2016 presidential campaign, then-Republican candidate Trump was accused by 13 women who publicly said that in the past he had physically touched them inappropriately in some way, the Washington Post reported. Trump denied the accusations.

WATCH | Pinoy macho dance group earns three yes votes on ‘Asia’s Got Talent’

“Asia’s Got Talent” judge Anggun can’t help but grin from ear to ear. So did most of the ladies in the studio audience.

And why not? The latest Filipino act to audition on AXN’s popular talent search show was none other than an all-male dance group called The Stripboys. From their name alone, one can already imagine that there was more to them (or in their particular case, less) than just dancing.

Entering the stage wearing bathrobes, a giggling Anggun had to exclaim, “I cannot wait to… ssseeeee… your act. If you’re ready, I am… very ready, too!”

The Stripboys then proceeded to do their thing much to the delight of the women in the crowd. In addition to revealing their chiseled figures and short black boxer briefs, the boys elicited oohs, aahs, gasps, and cheers with their fancy footwork, dazzling backflips and graceful acrobatics.

“That was fun! Well boys, I was super entertained by that!” Anggun blushed.

“Thank God your underwear didn’t slip off while you’re dancing!” Jay Park said, grinning.

Jay further added that while the dance number was not exactly his “favorite concept” but gave props to it just the same as it was, in his words, “something new” and something he had not seen before.

“I think it would have been better if they were all girls,” David Foster cracked. “But you know what? It was really a lot of fun, it was entertaining, it was kinda unique, good, clean fun, so thank you for that.”

When it was time to vote, Anggun initially played coy before declaring, “You made me really, really happy so I say yes!”

Jay and David voted yes as well and now The Stripboys are now in the running to advance to the semi-finals stage of the competition. The five young men ages 23 to 25 said they joined “Asia’s Got Talent” to prove that stripping is a form of expression, and not necessarily a negative thing.

“Asia’s Got Talent” airs on AXN every Thursday at 8:30PM with replays scheduled throughout the week. For program schedules, visit www.AXN-Asia.com.

AXN is available on Cablelink Channel 38, Cignal Channel 121, Destiny Cable Channel 61, Dream Satellite TV Channel 20, G Sat Channel 51, and SKYCable Channel 49. AXN HD is available on SKYCable Channel 247.

Oprah, Jimmy Fallon out of Emmy race, ‘Stranger Things’ star Barb in

LOS ANGELES | A mixed bag of new shows and old favorites on Thursday saw surprising Emmy exclusions for the likes of Oprah Winfrey and Jimmy Fallon and a surprise nod for short-lived character Barb Holland from Netflix’s “Stranger Things” in the race for television’s highest honors.

NBC’s “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” and Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show with Trevor Noah” were snubbed in the variety talk series category in favor of more politically scathing shows – “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert,” “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” and “Full Frontal With Samantha Bee.”

While NBC’s breakout multi-generational family drama “This Is Us” earned 11 nominations, its lead actress, Mandy Moore, was left out of the best drama actress race.

USA Network’s cyber thriller series “Mr. Robot” was snubbed just a year after its star, Rami Malek, won the best drama actor accolade, and Lena Dunham’s final season of “Girls” found no love with Emmy voters this year.

Winfrey was overlooked for her well-received role in HBO’s TV movie “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks,” although the show itself earned one nomination.

The absence of HBO’s double Emmy-winning medieval fantasy series “Game of Thrones” this year – ineligible due to a summer season debut – left a gap in the drama race that unsurprisingly was filled by the network’s new sci-fi drama “Westworld,” which earned a leading 22 nominations.

“Saturday Night Live” also got an unusually high 22 nods after enjoying a six-year ratings high thanks to its scathing takedowns of U.S. President Donald Trump and his advisers.

Alec Baldwin’s Trump impersonation, Kate McKinnon’s portrayal of White House advisor Kellyanne Conway and Melissa McCarthy’s recurring guest spot as an enraged White House spokesman Sean Spicer all earned them Emmy nominations.

“Saturday Night Live” has won 50 Primetime Emmy awards in its 42 years on air.

Among the biggest surprises was a nomination in the guest drama actress category for nerdy teenager Barb Holland, played by newcomer Shannon Purser, on Netflix’s 1980s supernatural sci-fi “Stranger Things.”

Barb became a viral phenomenon after her sudden and gruesome death on the show, prompting online tributes and songs to the character and fans petitioning “Stranger Things” creators The Duffer Brothers with the hashtag #JusticeForBarb.

On Thursday, the Duffer Brothers celebrated the show’s 18 Emmy nominations and paid tribute to Barb, saying “Gone but never forgotten!”

This gives you plenty of time to catch up or start watching the other two seasons. Trust us, it’s perfectly possible.

You only have four days. Use it wisely, savor it, and binge all the shows you can.

Netflix adds 7 million subscribers in global expansion

SAN FRANCISCO, Caifornia – Netflix added a record seven million subscribers over the past quarter as part of its global expansion drive, fueling a surge in revenue and profit for the streaming television giant.

California-based Netflix said in its quarterly report Wednesday it ended the year with nearly 94 million subscribers, adding five million outside the United States in the last three months of the year.

“This was the largest quarter of net additions in our history and was driven by strong acquisition trends in both our US and international segments,” Netflix said in its quarterly update.

That growth helped push net profit up 55 percent in the fourth quarter to $66.7 million, while revenues were up 36 percent from a year earlier to $2.5 billion.

The stronger-than-expected results lifted Netflix shares more than eight percent in after-hours trade.

Decade of streaming
“This quarter marks the 10-year anniversary of our launch of streaming,” said Netflix.

“The next decade will be even more amazing and tumultuous as internet TV supplants linear TV, and as we strive to remain a leader.”

Netflix added nearly 20 million new customers globally in the full year after announcing last January its plan to expand to some 190 countries to become a “global television network.”

“We are learning rapidly how best to match content with audience tastes around the world,” said the company’s quarterly letter to shareholders.

“It is clear to us that high quality content travels well across borders.”

Netflix said itexpects to see strong growth ahead even as it faces more competitors such as Amazon, which is also expanding globally.

The letter said Netflix expects 5.2 million new customers globally, including 3.7 million outside the US in the first quarter.

“We will seek to steadily increase revenue and operating margin as we balance growth and profitability,” the statement said.

“We are in no rush to push margins up too quickly, as we want to ensure we are investing aggressively enough to continue to lead internet TV around the world.”

The expansion drive has meant that nearly half — 47 percent — of Netflix users are now outside the United States, a proportion expected to increase as it adds more customers.

Counting on content
Known for its broad array of on-demand content and original productions such as “House of Cards” and “Marco Polo,” Netflix said it continues to invest in new content.

Conlumino analyst Neil Saunders said that content was a strong driver of Nexflix’s success, with subscriber ranks climbing despite a recent price increase.

“Netflix is now producing world-leading TV that spans a whole range of tastes from cult shows like ‘Stranger Things,’ to historical dramas like ‘The Crown,’ to light entertainment like ‘Fuller House,’ he said in emailed comment.

“Our own data show the value for money perception of Netflix has actually increased since the price rise.”

Conlumino was encouraged by the pipeline of shows in the works at Netflix, including international productions created with local talent and themes.

International growth remains a money-losing operation as Netflix invests in winning audiences around the world, but the analyst saw the strategy as necessary to counterbalance inevitable slowing at home.

“Overall, we believe Netflix is headed firmly in the right direction,” Saunders said.

‘Game of Thrones’ makes Emmys history

LOS ANGELES | Fantasy epic “Game of Thrones” made television history at the 68th Emmys on Sunday, becoming the most decorated fictional show since the awards began nearly seven decades ago.

The HBO series picked up 12 total Emmys this season — nine awards in technical categories and three top prizes at the glitzy ceremony in downtown Los Angeles — television’s equivalent of the Oscars.

The blood-spattered, sex-filled saga about noble families vying for control of the Iron Throne took home the most coveted prize of the night, the best drama Emmy — along with statuettes for writing and directing.

That gives it a total haul over the years of 38 — more than any other narrative series since the first Television Academy prize-giving in 1949, overtaking the haul of 37 won by long-running comedy “Frasier.”

“We love ‘Frasier’ and he had a long run and we’re sure someone will come along and take it from us. We just hope it doesn’t happen until we’re all dead,” showrunner David Benioff told reporters.

It went down to the wire in the end, as “Thrones” drew a blank in the acting categories, despite being a hot favorite and having multiple nominees, and only set the record with the last prize of the night.

Three of its stars — Lena Headey, Emilia Clarke and Maisie Williams — dominated the betting in the supporting actress category, but the statuette went to Maggie Smith of “Downton Abbey.”

Peter Dinklage missed out on a supporting actor trophy, as did co-star Kit Harington, the category’s favorite, with Ben Mendelsohn picking up the prize for Netflix family drama “Bloodline.”

“The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story” also glittered, picking up a total of nine awards this season, including the prize for best limited series.

“If your show doesn’t have a dragon or a white Bronco in it, go home right now,” host Jimmy Kimmel joked at the start of the three-hour broadcast, a reference to “Thrones” and the infamous car Simpson was in when he went on a wild ride through Los Angeles before his arrest.

The all-time Emmy list of winners — which includes nonfiction — is topped by NBC comedy sketch show “Saturday Night Live,” with 45 awards, one of them handed out Sunday to Kate McKinnon for best supporting actress.

MILESTONE FOR LOUIS-DREYFUS

It was a night of recognition for old hands in the comedy categories, while the drama awards went to relative newcomers.

In the best actress in a comedy category, Julia Louis-Dreyfus won a fifth consecutive Emmy for her role as the hapless acting president on HBO’s “Veep.”

“I would like to dedicate this to my father who passed away on Friday, and I’m so glad that he liked ‘Veep’ because his opinion was the one that really mattered,” she said in an emotional tribute, her voice breaking.

“Veep” later picked up the Emmy for outstanding comedy series.

The award for best actor in a comedy went for the second year in a row to Jeffrey Tambor for “Transparent,” who pleaded with producers and directors to give transgender talent a chance in television.

In the tightest race of the night, lead actress in a drama, Tatiana Maslany won for “Orphan Black,” pipping favorite Robin Wright (“House of Cards”) and last year’s victor Viola Davis (“How to Get Away with Murder”).

“House of Cards” star Kevin Spacey, who has never won an Emmy, missed out again for outstanding actor in a drama, which went to Rami Malek, the star of cyberspace security thriller “Mr. Robot.”

POLITICAL NIGHT

Ex-presidential hopeful Jeb Bush made a surprise appearance as a limo driver in a televised opening joke sequence, asking Kimmel what it’s like to be nominated.

Several stars took aim at divisive Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump, either in prepared jokes or in acceptance speeches.

“I want everyone to know that after careful consideration, I decided I’m going with Trump — which is why I’m saying we should get rid of all Hispanic and Muslim actors,” said award-winning comedian and writer Aziz Ansari.

GLORY FOR ‘O.J. SIMPSON’

The win for FX’s “The People v. O.J. Simpson” for best limited series was the most widely predicted victory of the night, and the show — a scripted drama recounting the American football star’s shocking fall from grace — swept up acting prizes.

Sarah Paulson and Courtney B. Vance were rewarded in the lead acting categories for their acclaimed portrayals of sparring attorneys Marcia Clark and Johnnie Cochran.

Sterling K. Brown took home a statuette for his supporting actor role, while D.V. DeVincentis was recognized for the show’s writing.

In the battle of the networks, perennial leader HBO finished top with 22 Emmys — six on Sunday to add to its 16 from the Creative Arts Emmys ceremony last weekend.

FX, which scored the most nominations in history for a basic cable network, ended the night on 18 in total — twice as many as third-placed Netflix.

Shadow of ‘O.J. Simpson’ looms large at Emmys

LOS ANGELES | O.J. Simpson’s fall from grace became a defining tale of American life — a story not just of a murder but of race, the media and celebrity in modern culture.

Two decades after the unforgettable climax of the “Trial of the Century,” it continues to polarize and seduce TV viewers, with an acclaimed documentary released this year and a drama about the trial set to sweep the Emmys.

The 10-part “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story” premiered on FX in February, offering a dramatized behind-the-scenes look at how he was acquitted of murdering his ex-wife Nicole Brown and her friend Ronald Goldman.

Exploiting a growing obsession with true-life crime mysteries, the show pulled in six to eight million viewers each week, with Simpson readying for release next year after being jailed for nine years in an unrelated robbery case.

It was nominated for nine Creative Emmy Awards — four of which it won — and is the most nominated show at television’s prestigious annual Primetime Emmys on Sunday, with a chance of winning 13 statuettes.

The series focuses on the white female prosecutor convinced of Simpson’s guilt and the star’s so-called “Dream Team” of lawyers that persuaded the predominantly black jury of reasonable doubt in the 1995 trial.

“I’ve never seen a phenomenon like that, when one crime fascinates America for so long. It’s really compelling,” said Tom Nunan, a former network boss who now teaches at UCLA’s School of Theater Film and Television.

The show’s Emmys recognition comes with American audiences feasting on a flood of true-crime series revisiting apparent miscarriages of justice.

WALL-TO-WALL COVERAGE

Netflix has announced a second season of its headline-grabbing “Making a Murderer” while September sees the broadcast of no fewer than three documentaries about the 1996 killing of six-year-old pageant star JonBenet Ramsey.

Meanwhile, Disney-owned ABC has commissioned a pilot for “The Jury,” described as a cross between 1957 courtroom drama “12 Angry Men” and NPR’s record-breaking investigative podcast “Serial,” which is credited with starting the trend.

But the Simpson case was the biggest of them all, says Nunan, combining celebrity, murder, race and wall-to-wall TV coverage in one of the biggest reality spectacles in history.

The saga is even credited with paving the way for modern reality TV shows following the likes of Kim Kardashian, whose father, attorney Robert Kardashian, is played by David Schwimmer in “The People v. O.J Simpson.”

“I’m not aware of any American crime story that has drawn this degree of scrutiny, of dramatization. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a Broadway or another adaptation, because our fascination seems to be endless,” Nunan said.

There were various dramatizations nearer the time of the trial, including Fox’s 1995 TV movie “The O.J. Simpson Story” and the CBS miniseries “American Tragedy” in 2000, but none had the impact of this year’s TV offerings.

ESPN’s award-winning “30 for 30″ strand made the story the subject of a five-part documentary, “O.J.: Made in America,” in June which went meticulously into the background of the case.

Drawing upon more than 70 interviews from detectives as well as friends and colleagues of Simpson and other observers connected to the case, it attempted to uncover powerful truths about race and culture in modern America.

RESONANT

The series, which came too late for this year’s Emmys, goes into the history of police brutality against African Americans in Los Angeles, including the beating by four officers of unarmed driver Rodney King after a high-speed chase.

The officers were acquitted, which sparked the LA riots of 1992 in which 55 people died.

“There was a lot in there that most of us didn’t know about, including a lot of testimonies from jurors confirming what many people thought, which is that most of these jurors were penalizing the LAPD for the way they dealt with Rodney King,” said Nunan.

Nick Higgins, the documentary’s cinematographer, started out doubtful that anyone would still be interested in the case but came to realize that “Made in America” was as much a story about the US today as it was a courthouse saga.

“You can’t help drawing parallels with what’s going on now (with) American race relations, the fact that they havent changed in three or four decades,” he told AFP.

Bob Thompson, head of Syracuse University’s Center for Television and Popular Culture, said the FX series and the ESPN documentary would be particularly resonant to a generation less familiar with Simpson but all too aware of the racial tension stoked by recent police shootings on unarmed African Americans.

“One story after another has developed the idea of strained relationships between urban police departments and people in the community,” he told AFP.

“The O.J. story touches so much of that stuff.”

‘Bates Motel’ casts Rihanna in Janet Leigh role

SAN DIEGO | The horror television series “Bates Motel” has cast pop star Rihanna in its final season, the show revealed during its panel at the Comic-Con fan convention on Friday.

The 28-year-old diva will play Marion Crane, the role made famous by Janet Leigh in Alfred Hitchcock’s “Psycho,” executives revealed.

The series is set before the events of the 1960 horror thriller, in which motel owner Norman Bates murders Crane in one of movie history’s most memorable moments.

“We wanted to thrust the iconic role into a contemporary spotlight and redefine it in a meaningful and exciting new way,” executive producers Carlton Cuse and Kerry Ehrin said in a joint statement released after the Comic-Con announcement.

“We also heard Rihanna was a fan of the show, and we were huge fans of hers, so it was the perfect collision of creativity and fate.”

Rihanna is no newcomer to acting, having starred in 2012 movie “Battleships” and played a lead role in Luc Besson’s upcoming sci-fi fantasy “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets.”

But it will be the Grammy-winning Barbadian singer-songwriter’s debut television series role.

“Yes, hello Comic-Con. It’s the girl Ri-Ri and let me tell you what a bad bitch is about to do,” Rihanna said later in a video posted on the “Bates Motel” Twitter account.

“I am about to check into the Bates Motel, very soon, and guess what else? Guess who’s playing Marion? Yes, so all you Comic-Con fans, all you ‘Bates Motel’ fans, stay tuned.”

Producers at the “Bates Motel” panel also confirmed that the fifth season, filming in Vancouver in the fall, would be the show’s last.

It’s Emmy-nominated star Vera Farmiga, who has played Norman’s mother Norma Louise Bates since 2013, revealed how tough she found it to play a dead body.

“I found I would be thrown into a panic if I had to actually hold my breath… I’m actually breathing in all those scenes, but so shallow that it would take me about 40 minutes to get into it,” she said.

Fox shares could get rare Oscars season boost

NEW YORK | Shares of 21st Century Fox — owner of the 20th Century Fox film studio and Fox television network — could be set for a rare Oscar rally if the global media conglomerate takes home gold at this Sunday’s Academy Awards ceremony.

The Oscars, which draws some of the biggest audiences of any single annual television event, typically have little effect on share prices of big publicly traded companies with movies in the running, analysts said.

“Normally it’s not terrifically meaningful for stocks, but here and there you can get situations where it matters a little,” FBR Capital Markets analyst Barton Crockett said. This time, it could matter to Fox, Crockett said.

That is partly because Fox fielded movies that not only fared well at other awards ceremonies but also at the box office, in a change from the last two years, Crockett said.

Fox led studios this year with a total of 26 Oscar nods, including 12 for best picture-nominated revenge drama, “The Revenant.” Other Fox films with nominations in top categories include “Brooklyn” and “The Martian.”

Filmed entertainment accounted for nearly a third of total second-quarter revenue at Fox, which also runs cable, television and other entertainment operations.

“The Revenant,” starring Leonardo DiCaprio as a bear-mauled and ice-battered explorer, blew away initial expectations and has grossed $383.6 million worldwide since opening in late December.

The movie, with a $135 million budget, is still in theaters, a big factor in how much a company will gain when its film is nominated for or wins an Oscar, said BofA Merrill Lynch analyst Jessica Reif Cohen.

An Academy award nomination or win could extend the time a movie is shown in theaters, boosting a film’s box office proceeds.

“If DiCaprio wins … it could be a significant boost,” Cohen said.

A nomination or win also increases profit over the longer term by increasing movie rentals, DVD purchases and on-demand cable contracts, she said.

Shares of Fox gained nearly 4.5 percent on Jan. 14 after Oscar nominations were announced, but are little changed so far this year compared with a 4.4 percent decline for the broader Standard & Poor’s 500 stock index. In 2015 Fox shares fell 26 percent.

‘The Revenant,’ ‘The Martian’ win big at Golden Globes

LOS ANGELES | Epic survival thriller “The Revenant” and space blockbuster “The Martian” won big at the Golden Globes on Sunday, boosting their chances for Oscars glory next month.

“The Revenant” — the story of legendary fur trapper Hugh Glass, played by Leonardo DiCaprio — won three top awards at the star-studded gala, for best drama, best actor (DiCaprio) and best director (Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu).

“The Martian,” the tale of an astronaut stranded alone on Mars, won two top prizes — best comedy film and best actor in a comedy for Matt Damon, who stars in the blockbuster.

The victories for the two films at the Globes put them in prime position as Hollywood’s annual awards season heats up, leading to the all-important Oscars on February 28.

“I cannot say how surprised I am and how proud I am to have survived this movie,” Inarritu said, referring to the harsh conditions in which the movie was filmed.

Inarritu’s movie “Birdman” won four Oscars last year including for best picture and best director, and many critics believe the Mexican director could emerge triumphant again this year.

DiCaprio, who got a standing ovation from his Hollywood peers, said he wanted to share the award with all the indigenous communities around the world.

“It is time that we recognize your history and that we protect your indigenous lands from corporate interests and from people that are out there to exploit them,” said the 41-year-old actor, who critics believe may finally win his first Oscar for the movie.

A-listers Kate Winslet and Sylvester Stallone also took home acting prizes at the ceremony held in Beverly Hills, which is seen as a good indicator of which movies and actors will fight for Oscars glory.

Winslet won for best supporting actress in a film for her role in the biopic “Steve Jobs”, Stallone won for best supporting actor in “Creed,” in which he reprised his iconic role of boxer Rocky Balboa.

“Spotlight,” an early Globes favorite about journalists from The Boston Globe who uncovered sexual abuse in the Catholic Church, went home emptyhanded despite three nominations.

Also snubbed was “The Big Short,” based on a book about the financial crisis of 2007-2008.

SHARP HUMOR

Hosting the glittering gala considered Hollywood’s biggest party of the year was British comedian Ricky Gervais, who dished out his trademark raunchy humor, targeting Caitlyn Jenner, Mel Gibson and Jennifer Lawrence, among many others.

“Shut up, you disgusting, pill-popping deviant scum!” he said by way of greeting the crowd at the event organized by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

The event was carried live on television in the United States — but with a delay of a few seconds to bleep out Gervais’s dirtiest jokes for a primetime US audience.

Other films that vied for the best drama prize — and expect to figure in the Oscars conversation — are lesbian romance “Carol” starring Cate Blanchett, harrowing kidnap tale “Room,” and the summer action blockbuster “Mad Max: Fury Road.”

For best actress in a drama, Brie Larson won the Globe for best actress in a drama for “Room,” about a mother and her child held captive in a small room. She bested Blanchett and “Carol” co-star Rooney Mara.

In the best foreign movie category, Hungarian Holocaust drama “Son of Saul” was the winner.

Unlike the Oscars, the Golden Globes also honors television shows.

“Mr Robot,” about a computer programmer and vigilante hacker, took home the prize for best drama series. Amazon’s comedy “Mozart In The Jungle” took the prize for best comedy series.

Jon Hamm won his second Golden Globe for best actor in a drama for his portrayal of womanizing advertising executive Don Draper in “Mad Men,” whose finale aired last year.

And for best actress in the TV drama category, Taraji P. Henson won the Golden Globe for her role in “Empire,” which looks at the struggle inside the family behind a major hip-hop label.

The awards are decided by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, made up of some 90 entertainment editors and writers from 55 countries who report on the industry year-round.

How #AlDub is a game-changer in Philippine television, advertising, social media

Since mid-July, the AlDub segment on noontime show “Eat Bulaga” has been growing into a pop-culture storm that is revolutionizing Philippine television, advertising, and social media.

The game-changing “kalyeserye” (a portmanteau combining the Tagalog words for “street” and “series”) repeats the so-called Pacquiao effect: it keeps people glued to their TV sets, it is on newspaper front pages, and it stops traffic and work.

Last Saturday, after 55,000 lined up to get inside the country’s largest indoor stadium, the five-hour “Sa Tamang Panahon” show was aired without commercials, “a very powerful move from ‘Eat Bulaga’, one that speaks of its commanding and enduring presence on Philippine television,” said Elmer Gatchalian, a writer who worked for GMA Network for 10 years before moving in 2010 to TV5, where he is head writer for “LolaBasyang.com” and “#ParangNormalActivity”.

But how was “Eat Bulaga” able to do that?

The 36-year-old noontime show has always been a big force, “a prized real estate” on Philippine television, according to advertising executive Vincent Pozon.

“Eat Bulaga” producers always have their ears to the ground. When he’s had to approach the show for commercial segments that advertising clients want to do in the show, Pozon said its producers would refuse to accept a proposal in toto, insisting on “making it work, tweaking” the concept, turning it into “paid or branded content.”

The boy-next-door charm of Alden Richards and the wholesome quirkiness of Maine “YayaDub” Mendoza — relatable, positive traits which advertisers want to be associated with — also helped push “Eat Bulaga” to have, what Gatchalian called, the ability to “dictate the ‘no commercial break’ rule during the entire airing of ‘Sa Tamang Panahon’.”

“Bukod sa may natural kilig yung tandem nila, higit sa lahat, maganda ang image nila. Alden and Maine are ‘mukhang mabait’ at ‘likas na mabuting anak, kapatid, at katrabaho.’ Wala pa tayong nababalitaan na naging rude sila sa fans. Halos lahat ng nababasa kong tweets, nagkukuwento kung gaano kabait si Maine sa fans niya and how she reached out to one of them in particular,” he said.

(“Aside from the natural high that their tandem creates, most of all, their image is good. Alden and Maine ‘look good’ and look like ‘naturally good children, siblings, and co-workers.’ We’ve had no news of them being rude to their fans. Most of the tweets I’ve read tell of how good Maine is to her fans and in particular, how she reached out to one of them.”)

“That story about a 60-year-old lolo who lined up for six hours just to buy ‘Sa Tamang Panahon’ tickets is one of the most touching fan-idol interactions. Even si Alden, all praises sa kanya ang mga katrabaho nya. Bonus na lang na pareho silang good-looking (his co-workers are all praises for him. That they’re both good-looking is a bonus),” he added.

In contrast, other young stars have been caught in social media acting like brats. Enrique Gil, for one, allegedly had a video of getting drunk inside a plane and James Reid, a picture of giving the dirty finger.

“Ang layo di ba (So different, right)?” Gatchalian said. “Alden and Maine are redefining what it means to be ‘artista’,” he added.

If they used to be “elusive, unreachable, and snobbish,” the AlDub protagonists are seeing fans go crazy for “kinder, more approachable, more sincere, and morally upright citizens.”

“So for some stars perceived to be negative or not ‘mabait’ (good), we might be seeing the end of their careers as artistas or product endorsers,” Gatchalian said.

PERFECT MATCH, PERFECT TIMING
Usually, television programs that rate high “need to crawl in the gutter, use the vulgar and the vile, skin and slapstick,” said advertising guru Pozon.

In contrast, AlDub was “born and (is) staged in the street, with two live audiences, street and studio, (with) very loose storyline led by unscripted events. No bad values,” he added.

Gatchalian said it another way: “Kaya rin pumatok ang AlDub kasi (AlDub is a hit because) I think they are the complete antithesis of manufactured stars and love teams. Their unexpected and innately potent chemistry is a breath of fresh air in local showbiz that is so used to manufacturing kilig.”

Riding on traditional media, both the segment and the show have tapped into the social media principles of freshness and boldness, and the enduring qualities of authenticity and expectation.

“The whole thing was born when the whole world watched a girl blush on television,” said Pozon.

“Eat Bulaga” saw the audience reaction and ran away with it building on this first blush with standard teleserye plots, which Gatchalian listed as: ampon (foundling), long-lost daughter, diary, hostage-taking, lola as kontrabida (villain), against-all-odds love story of Yaya and Alden, etc.

AlDub is so phenomenal it is making the rest of television passe.

“It is so new, the world will study this phenomenon,” said Pozon.

“Aldub’s persistent and pervasive relevance has the tendency to make all other celebs, love teams, and TV shows irrelevant…Niluluma niya ang lahat ng mga love team, artista at TV show sa ngayon. So producers of TV content have to really up the ante in terms of innovative storytelling and content production,” said Gatchalian.

The kalyeserye is also a parody, a lampoon, an exaggeration of soap conventions, Gatchalian said. And this would have an impact on the future of teleseryes.

On top of this self-mockery, the yeast that’s making AlDub grow like no other may be respect — for the protagonists (perhaps because Maine is from a well-off family) and most especially for the audience.

“The magic comes from the conditions from which it sprang: respect for what is organic, an ear to the ground on what is working, a respect for the audience,” said Pozon.

AlDub occupies the still-undefined space in television and pop culture, balancing reality and make-believe, giving respectful distance to whatever relationship is developing between Maine and Alden (if any), between reality and make-believe, between romantic-comedy and suspense-drama.

“Somebody in there (‘Eat Bulaga’) is thinking, ‘We’re not going with what worked in the past, we’re not going with experience or what is world-class. We’re going to keep a respectful distance and watch this blossom and we will water and take care of it,’” said Pozon.

“I am sure there is a tug-o-war between scriptwriting it and giving it space,” he added.

The timing was also perfect. “They are the love team of this millennial and social media-obsessed generation. And I think ‘Eat Bulaga’ has found an enduring brand with AlDub — and they were found by a new audience too,” said Gatchalian.

So what is next for Alden and Maine? “I can’t imagine how their legions of fans would react if they are denied of a real-life happy ending for AlDub,” said Gatchalian.

#AlDub sells out 55,000 tickets for Philippine Arena show

As posted on its Facebook late Monday night, the Philippine Arena has confirmed that the scheduled “Eat Bulaga” AlDub special dubbed as “Tamang Panahon” this Saturday, October 24, had completely sold out.

Eight hours earlier, a Twitter account attributed to Senator Tito Sotto (@titosottoreal) tweeted that the event had sold out 55,000 tickets, the entire seating capacity of the humongous multi-purpose indoor arena in Bocaue, Bulacan.

A screenshot of Sotto’s tweet accompanied this Philippine Arena post:

“Eat Bulaga sa Tamang Panahon sa Philippine Arena SOLD OUT!!!
Welcome pa rin po kayo sa Philippine Sports Stadium!
Sa mga hindi nakabili o mga naubusan ng ticket go pa rin ba kayo???
‪#‎ALDUBPhilippineSportsStadiumPaMore‬‬
Use this hash tag and let your voice be heard!”

Yes, the venue is now offering a view to the event from the nearby Philippine Sports Stadium which has a seating capacity of 25,000 for those who weren’t able to buy tickets for “Tamang Panahon.”

On Saturday, the event set a single-day record for Ticketworld with sales of over 30,000 tickets just hours after it was announced on “Eat Bulaga”.

With four more days to go before “Tamang Panahon”, it looks like the potentially historic event is set to break new records as the popularity of the AlDub love team of Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza a.k.a. Yaya Dub has yet to reach its peak.

“Tamang Panahon” starts at the Arena at around 10AM but will air on GMA Network at 11:30AM.

Sotto admits #AlDub 'somehow helped' him top latest senatorial surveys

MANILA – The “#AlDub nation” has not only conquered every home and office, but may have played a role in cementing Senator Vicente Sotto III's lead in senatorial surveys.

The senator, a mainstay in the noontime variety show Eat Bulaga that is now enjoying an unprecedented boost from the "#AlDub" mania, remains number one in all survey ratings for senatorial candidates in 2016.

“Siguro, siyempre nakakatulong iyon [Maybe, somehow, it helped],” Sotto said, referring to the "#AlDub" factor in an interview before attending Tuesday's session.

However, Sotto said it is not only #AlDub that helped him land on top in voter preference, but also the ratings of the entire show.

He noted as well his consistently high ratings in surveys even before the "AlDub" phenomenon came into being. He has also consistently been in the top 3 of winners in past Senate races.

“Pero hindi naman iyon lang kasi iyong mga survey nakaraan, kapag tinignan mo mataas din naman ako kahit wala pang #AlDub,” Sotto said.

Sotto also attributed his ratings to his work in the Senate, citing his perfect attendance and participative attitude in all plenary and committee hearings.

“I think those who were surveyed are aware of all these," he said, referring to his Senate work.

“Siguro naman kung gusto mong bumoto ng isang senador, gusto mo iboto ang masipag siguro [I'd guess that if you wanted to elect a good senator, you'd vote for the one who works hard],” he added.

Sotto said his being top in the ratings will inspire him to work harder. “All I can say is I'm pleased, I am humbled. Probably being highest in the ratings will inspire me to work more, work harder,” Sotto said.

“Whereas before, I'd be here in the Senate at 3 pm, maybe now I'll be here at 5 minutes to 3," he quipped.

Sotto said he will appear in Eat Bulaga until the election period starts on February 5, 2016, and start his own campaign around the country.

“Of course you still have to campaignbecause come February 5, I'll no longer be seen at Eat Bulaga,” he explained.

Sotto said that his popularity cannot be attributed soley to #AlDub but also to all shows in Eat Bulaga including the “That’s My Babe,” "Juan for All, All for Juan," among other things.

“Kaya lang natatabunan ng ratings ng #AlDub, akala nila #AlDub lang, of course, it plays a big role, pero sa reading namin, eh, it is the entire Kalye Serye gimmick eh,” Sotto said.

NPC deciding this week

Meanwhile, Sotto said that the Nationalist People’s Coalition will decide whom to support within the week in undisclosed meeting.

“Siguro, yes, hopefully very soon, baka makapagdesisyon na ang partido kung mag-e-endorse ng isa lang, kung isa lang kandidato o maso-sona libre o ano,” Sotto said.

WATCH | AlDub-inspired original song goes viral on YouTube

Hot on the heels of the upcoming Philippine tour of American country star Bryan White, who suddenly developed a strong fan base as a result of his 15-year-old song’s association with the phenomenal love team known as AlDub, a trio of local musicians have decided to upload their own unofficial theme song for Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza a.k.a. Yaya Dub.

Written and performed by PhilPop 2012 finalist Keiko Necesario (“3 A.M.”) and YouTube sibling sensations The Antonio Duo, the playful pop ditty simply titled “The AlDub Song” was completed one Saturday afternoon later according to a post by Keiko on her Facebook page.

Keiko later told InterAksyon that the collaboration was initiated by Andrai who apparently has a big crush on Yaya Dub.

“Since I personally find AlDub to be really cool and nakakalig naman talaga, I said game ako. Actually wala kaming time halos because we’re all busy but we managed to squeeze some limited time that Saturday and got together at Andrai’s art studio at around 4PM in Quezon City then went to work right away. Two hours later, the song was finished. Hindi pa rin namin gamay yung song pero thankfully we were able to record and upload the completed video by midnight.”

With a chorus that goes, “Parapap-papa AlDub you…Sasabihin mo rin kaya, Maalden kita,” the song is basically a duet between Keiko and Isaiah Antonio. Isaiah’s brother, Andrai, joins them to rap the middle verse that starts with “Ano mang pagsubok ni Lola Nidora/Plywood, swimming pool, at kahit ano pa/Pag-ibig na tunay, hindi matatalo…”

To date, the video of the trio’s acoustic performance has garnered over 160,000 views since it was first uploaded to YouTube last September 19. In her latest post, Keiko promised that a studio recording of the song will be released soon.

“We actually finished the recording and are now on the mixing stage. And yes, we’ve been approached by three record labels for this so far,” Keiko happily revealed.

Jon Hamm, ‘Game of Thrones’ finally win Emmys glory

LOS ANGELES | HBO’s fantasy epic “Game of Thrones” won for best drama series and Jon Hamm finally took home a trophy for “Mad Men” on Sunday at the Emmy Awards — a night of firsts that saw a black actress make history.

Viola Davis gave an emotional speech as she became the first African-American to win the award for best actress in a drama series for her portrayal of a law professor involved in a twisted plot on ABC’s “How To Get Away with Murder.”

Other highlights of the show included a best comedy series prize for HBO’s political satire “Veep” and several prizes for Amazon’s dark transgender comedy “Transparent” — a major breakthrough for the streaming content provider.

“Game of Thrones” was the big winner at the star-studded ceremony in Los Angeles, raking in 12 awards, and HBO also struck gold with “Olive Kitteridge,” about a couple whose marriage is in trouble, which won eight awards.

“Thrones” – a sweeping epic filled with blood, sex and back-stabbing — had won many awards before, but never the top prize.

“Thanks again, HBO, for believing in dragons,” said series co-creator David Benioff.

But the emotional high points of the night — television’s equivalent of the Oscars — belonged to Hamm and Davis.

Hamm — whose portrayal of seductive, mysterious ad man Don Draper on retro-cool “Mad Men” had won him rave reviews and transformed his career — finally struck gold on his eighth nomination for the role.

“It’s incredible and impossible for me personally to be standing here,” Hamm said after receiving a standing ovation from the audience at the 67th Emmys.

For Davis, the moment was not one to be missed.

“Let me tell you something,” she told the audience to wide applause. “The only thing that separates women of color from anyone else is opportunity.”

She thanked series creator Peter Nowalk, executive producer Shonda Rhimes and others, calling them “people who have redefined what it means to be beautiful, to be sexy, to be a leading woman, to be black.”

- Four-peat for Julia Louis-Dreyfus -

“Transparent”, about a transgender woman, won five Emmys overall for Amazon in its first year with nominations for its scripted content, as it tries to catch up with streaming pioneer Netflix.

Jeffrey Tambor took home the trophy for best actor in a comedy for his portrayal of a transgender woman in the series, which also took honors for directing, best guest actor in a comedy and for two technical categories.

“I have been given the opportunity to act because people’s lives depend on it,” Tambor said in his acceptance speech.

“I’d like to dedicate my performance and this award to the transgender community. Thank you for your patience. Thank you for your courage. Thank you for your stories. Thank you for your inspiration.”

In addition to top comedy series honors, “Veep” — the story of a female US vice president who rises to the presidency and her bumbling staff — saw its star Julia Louis-Dreyfus win for the fourth time in a row. Co-star Tony Hale won his second Emmy for best supporting actor in a comedy.

Louis-Dreyfus cracked a joke about Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump in her acceptance speech, saying, “It’s getting trickier and trickier to satirize this stuff.”

- Host Samberg quips -

Host Andy Samberg kicked off the ceremony with a musical video skit about the wealth of quality television now on offer, featuring several stars like Hamm and Kerry Washington, the star of “Scandal.”

Samberg — the star of Fox’s sitcom “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” and a former cast member of US comedy show “Saturday Night Live” — then hailed this year’s event for recognizing diversity.

“This is the most diverse group of nominees in Emmy history,” he said, then quipping: “So congratulations Hollywood, you did it. Yeah, racism is over.”
