Starbucks in Westeros? HBO speaks up on 'Game of Thrones' set blunder
HOLLYWOOD — With two episodes of HBO's wildly popular medieval fantasy saga "Game of Thrones" to go, puzzled fans took to social media on Monday after heroine Daenerys Targaryen was joined at a wooden banquet table by a rogue to-go coffee cup.
Jokes, spoofs and critiques quickly followed the anachronistic appearance of the beverage -- taken to be a Starbucks coffee by many who noticed -- in the fourth episode of the eighth and final season.
"Seriously, they have Starbucks in Winterfell," one commenter wrote on Twitter, while others lamented the slip-up after waiting two years for the eighth season to air.
Yet another tweeted a redrawn logo of the American coffee chain with the title changed to "Winterfell coffee" and the wolf's head sigil of the Starks, one of the noble families at the center of the series.
HBO spoke up as the blunder went viral, tweeting that "the latte that appeared in the episode was a mistake" and playfully adding that Daenerys -- played by British actress Emilia Clarke -- had ordered an herbal tea.
Meanwhile, executive producer Bernie Caulfield told WNYC radio she couldn't believe the error, saying that "our on-set prop people and decorators are so on it 1,000 percent."
"We're sorry!" she said. "If that's the worst thing that they're finding, we're in good shape."
HBO called it a "craft services coffee cup" but Caulfield echoed a theme spread widely on Twitter, speculating that Westeros -- the fictional continent where the action takes place -- "was the first place to actually have Starbucks."
Though he hadn't personally watched Sunday's episode, entitled "The Last of the Starks," art director Hauke Richter told Variety magazine: "Things can get forgotten on set."
Starbucks seized the opportunity to capitalize on the faux pas, evoking its popular dragon fruit-based thirst-quencher in a statement that read: "We're surprised she didn't order a Dragon Drink."
It was not immediately clear if Daenerys, known in the show as the Mother of Dragons for her mastery over the winged creatures of legend, has ever tried coffee.
Season eight began airing on April 14, nearly 20 months after the seventh season's conclusion. The last ever episode will be shown on May 19.

‘Sesame Street’ writer: Ernie, Bert a gay couple
MANILA, Philippines — Former "Sesame Street" writer Mark Saltzman confirmed that the famous characters Bert and Ernie in the iconic kids TV series are a gay couple.
In an interview with LGBTQ publication Queerty, Mark revealed that he based the characters on his own relationship with late partner Arnold Glassman.
"I don't think I'd know how else to write them, but as a loving couple. That's what I had in my life, a Bert and Ernie relationship. How could it not permeate? The things that would tick off Ernie would be the things that would tick off Bert. How could it not?" Mark said.
But Sesame Workshop, the education company behind the show, denies the claims.
On its Twitter account, the company said Bert and Ernie are just best friends.
"As we have always said, Bert and Ernie are best friends. They were created to teach preschoolers that people can be good friends with those who are very different from themselves," the company wrote.
"Even though they are identified as male characters and possess many human traits and characteristics (as most Sesame Street Muppets do), they remain puppets, and do not have a sexual orientation," the company added.
Bert and Ernie's sexual orientation has been a hot Twitter topic on Wednesday, with a collective 300,000 tweets for both characters as of posting.

‘PLANET OF THE APPS’ | Apple’s first TV series shows what it takes to build an app
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA | Apple Inc’s long-awaited move into original television series starts Tuesday, with a reality show about a universe that is key to the technology giant’s business: the world of app developers trying to bring their ideas to the masses.
The 10-episode “Planet of the Apps,” an unscripted show with similarities to ABC’s “Shark Tank,” is part of an effort to add exclusive video programing to Apple’s music streaming service to help attract new subscribers. The first episode will be available for streaming around the globe starting at 9 p.m. PDT on Tuesday (midnight EDT/0400 GMT).
Hollywood has been awaiting the entry of deep-pocketed Apple into original TV series, a field crowded with award-winning dramas and comedies from outlets such as Netflix and Time Warner Inc’s HBO.
The first “Apps” episode will be free to anyone who wants to see it on iTunes and the show’s website. Subsequent episodes will be released each Tuesday on Apple Music and available only to the streaming service’s subscribers.
On the show, developers try to interest celebrity mentors with a 60-second pitch on an escalator. The advisers help contestants build their products and prepare appeals for funding from Lightspeed Venture Partners, the first investor in Snapchat.
“The question when you have ideas is how to take those to fruition,” Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet software and services, said in an interview. “Sometimes you may not know how, you might be afraid of what’s involved. This really shows how that’s possible.”
Apple’s future programing plans include an adaptation of comedian James Corden’s “Carpool Karaoke” segment from his CBS show that will begin airing in August, as well as a documentary about Sean Combs in June and another about Clive Davis in a few months, Cue said.
“Planet of the Apps” came from musician will.i.am, who with producer Ben Silverman had shopped the series to traditional TV players before approaching Apple. Will.i.am appears as a judge alongside entrepreneur Gary Vaynerchuk and actresses Gwyneth Paltrow and Jessica Alba, who have started businesses.
“I felt like this was a great way to show that app developers or business people are not just white dudes in suits, or white dudes coding,” Alba said.
In the first two episodes, developers present apps for online shopping, campus safety and a school backpack. One team tries to adapt after Google announces a feature similar to its own concept. Another developer feels overwhelmed by will.i.am’s rapid-fire list of ideas.
At the show’s end, viewers are told they can download the apps from Apple’s App Store. The show itself will be promoted on the Apple.com home page, on iTunes and elsewhere.
“All of our customers are going to be exposed to this in one way or another,” Cue said.

Shadow of ‘O.J. Simpson’ looms large at Emmys
LOS ANGELES | O.J. Simpson’s fall from grace became a defining tale of American life — a story not just of a murder but of race, the media and celebrity in modern culture.
Two decades after the unforgettable climax of the “Trial of the Century,” it continues to polarize and seduce TV viewers, with an acclaimed documentary released this year and a drama about the trial set to sweep the Emmys.
The 10-part “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story” premiered on FX in February, offering a dramatized behind-the-scenes look at how he was acquitted of murdering his ex-wife Nicole Brown and her friend Ronald Goldman.
Exploiting a growing obsession with true-life crime mysteries, the show pulled in six to eight million viewers each week, with Simpson readying for release next year after being jailed for nine years in an unrelated robbery case.
It was nominated for nine Creative Emmy Awards — four of which it won — and is the most nominated show at television’s prestigious annual Primetime Emmys on Sunday, with a chance of winning 13 statuettes.
The series focuses on the white female prosecutor convinced of Simpson’s guilt and the star’s so-called “Dream Team” of lawyers that persuaded the predominantly black jury of reasonable doubt in the 1995 trial.
“I’ve never seen a phenomenon like that, when one crime fascinates America for so long. It’s really compelling,” said Tom Nunan, a former network boss who now teaches at UCLA’s School of Theater Film and Television.
The show’s Emmys recognition comes with American audiences feasting on a flood of true-crime series revisiting apparent miscarriages of justice.
WALL-TO-WALL COVERAGE
Netflix has announced a second season of its headline-grabbing “Making a Murderer” while September sees the broadcast of no fewer than three documentaries about the 1996 killing of six-year-old pageant star JonBenet Ramsey.
Meanwhile, Disney-owned ABC has commissioned a pilot for “The Jury,” described as a cross between 1957 courtroom drama “12 Angry Men” and NPR’s record-breaking investigative podcast “Serial,” which is credited with starting the trend.
But the Simpson case was the biggest of them all, says Nunan, combining celebrity, murder, race and wall-to-wall TV coverage in one of the biggest reality spectacles in history.
The saga is even credited with paving the way for modern reality TV shows following the likes of Kim Kardashian, whose father, attorney Robert Kardashian, is played by David Schwimmer in “The People v. O.J Simpson.”
“I’m not aware of any American crime story that has drawn this degree of scrutiny, of dramatization. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a Broadway or another adaptation, because our fascination seems to be endless,” Nunan said.
There were various dramatizations nearer the time of the trial, including Fox’s 1995 TV movie “The O.J. Simpson Story” and the CBS miniseries “American Tragedy” in 2000, but none had the impact of this year’s TV offerings.
ESPN’s award-winning “30 for 30″ strand made the story the subject of a five-part documentary, “O.J.: Made in America,” in June which went meticulously into the background of the case.
Drawing upon more than 70 interviews from detectives as well as friends and colleagues of Simpson and other observers connected to the case, it attempted to uncover powerful truths about race and culture in modern America.
RESONANT
The series, which came too late for this year’s Emmys, goes into the history of police brutality against African Americans in Los Angeles, including the beating by four officers of unarmed driver Rodney King after a high-speed chase.
The officers were acquitted, which sparked the LA riots of 1992 in which 55 people died.
“There was a lot in there that most of us didn’t know about, including a lot of testimonies from jurors confirming what many people thought, which is that most of these jurors were penalizing the LAPD for the way they dealt with Rodney King,” said Nunan.
Nick Higgins, the documentary’s cinematographer, started out doubtful that anyone would still be interested in the case but came to realize that “Made in America” was as much a story about the US today as it was a courthouse saga.
“You can’t help drawing parallels with what’s going on now (with) American race relations, the fact that they havent changed in three or four decades,” he told AFP.
Bob Thompson, head of Syracuse University’s Center for Television and Popular Culture, said the FX series and the ESPN documentary would be particularly resonant to a generation less familiar with Simpson but all too aware of the racial tension stoked by recent police shootings on unarmed African Americans.
“One story after another has developed the idea of strained relationships between urban police departments and people in the community,” he told AFP.
“The O.J. story touches so much of that stuff.”

‘Bates Motel’ casts Rihanna in Janet Leigh role
SAN DIEGO | The horror television series “Bates Motel” has cast pop star Rihanna in its final season, the show revealed during its panel at the Comic-Con fan convention on Friday.
The 28-year-old diva will play Marion Crane, the role made famous by Janet Leigh in Alfred Hitchcock’s “Psycho,” executives revealed.
The series is set before the events of the 1960 horror thriller, in which motel owner Norman Bates murders Crane in one of movie history’s most memorable moments.
“We wanted to thrust the iconic role into a contemporary spotlight and redefine it in a meaningful and exciting new way,” executive producers Carlton Cuse and Kerry Ehrin said in a joint statement released after the Comic-Con announcement.
“We also heard Rihanna was a fan of the show, and we were huge fans of hers, so it was the perfect collision of creativity and fate.”
Rihanna is no newcomer to acting, having starred in 2012 movie “Battleships” and played a lead role in Luc Besson’s upcoming sci-fi fantasy “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets.”
But it will be the Grammy-winning Barbadian singer-songwriter’s debut television series role.
“Yes, hello Comic-Con. It’s the girl Ri-Ri and let me tell you what a bad bitch is about to do,” Rihanna said later in a video posted on the “Bates Motel” Twitter account.
“I am about to check into the Bates Motel, very soon, and guess what else? Guess who’s playing Marion? Yes, so all you Comic-Con fans, all you ‘Bates Motel’ fans, stay tuned.”
Producers at the “Bates Motel” panel also confirmed that the fifth season, filming in Vancouver in the fall, would be the show’s last.
It’s Emmy-nominated star Vera Farmiga, who has played Norman’s mother Norma Louise Bates since 2013, revealed how tough she found it to play a dead body.
“I found I would be thrown into a panic if I had to actually hold my breath… I’m actually breathing in all those scenes, but so shallow that it would take me about 40 minutes to get into it,” she said.

Actress Rachel McAdams added to HBO’s ‘True Detective’ cast
LOS ANGELES | Rachel McAdams, Taylor Kitsch and Kelly Reilly have joined the cast for the second season of HBO crime thriller “True Detective,” the premium cable network said on Monday.
The three will join two previously announced stars, Irish actor Colin Farrell and U.S. actor Vince Vaughn, in the eight-part miniseries, which was a big hit for HBO earlier this year and received five Primetime Emmy awards.
The second season is in production in California and revolves around three police officers, a career criminal and a murder, HBO said.
Farrell, 38, will play compromised detective Ray Velcoro, and Vaughn, 44, will star as criminal mastermind Frank Semyon in the series from writer Nic Pizzolatto.
HBO said McAdams, the 36-year-old “Midnight in Paris” actress, would play an uncompromising and ethical sheriff, while “Lone Survivor” actor Kitsch, 33, will play a California Highway Patrol motorcycle officer.
Reilly, a 37-year-old English actress, will play Semyon’s wife, Jordan, a former D-list actress.
“Fast & Furious” director Justin Lin will direct the first two episodes. A premiere date for the second season has not been announced.
The first season of “True Detective” was set in Louisiana and centered on a series of satanic murders, pairing seasoned film stars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson.
The show’s January premiere helped establish buzz around McConaughey before he won his first best actor Oscar for “Dallas Buyers Club.”

Mark Neumann strikes gold with ‘Wattpad Presents’ performance
Now he can really be called “Mr. Popular”.
Since making his showbiz debut on TV5’s “Artista Academy” two years ago, Mark Neumann has been taking on one challenging project after another in his bid to prove to everyone that there’s more to him than just his pretty boy features.
After “graduating” from the reality talent search, the 19-year-old Filipino-Croatian lad who grew up in Germany immediately played against type when he took on the role of Fuego, one of the villainous superpowered characters in the 2013 fantaserye “Kidlat”.
He followed that up with the May-December TV movie “The Lady Next Door” where he played a troubled teen who fell in love with an older woman portrayed by Alice Dixson.
Mark was then included in the cast of the comedy soap “Confessions of a Torpe” where he first rekindled the “Shark” love team he started with Shaira Mae dela Cruz on “Artista Academy”. Despite the fact that Shaira went public with her relationship with Edgar Allan Guzman, fans continue to accept their onscreen team-up.
So it comes as no surprise that when the two headlined the “Wattpad Presents” mini-series “Mr. Popular Meets Ms. Nobody”, it turned out to be the biggest hit of the eight Wattpad stories adapted by TV5 to date as well as the only one to merit a sequel.
“We didn’t expect our story to rate that well. I was both surprised and happy with the good feedback but Shaira and I could not have done it without Direk Jay Altarejos, the rest of the cast and everyone who worked behind the scenes,” Mark told InterAksyon during the recent story conference for the latest batch of “Wattpad Presents”.
Aside from his chemistry with Shaira, which was pretty much a given, a big part of what made “Mr. Popular Meets Ms. Nobody” was Mark’s performance as Kyle, the most popular guy in school who made life very difficult for Chelsea, a little known girl who made the mistake of standing up to him. The young actor said it was not easy playing a character who is the exact opposite of who he is in real life.
“Ako yung binu-bully sa school noon,” he recalled. “Hindi rin ako mayabang kaya maraming nagsabi na hindi ako bagay sa role ni Kyle. So I really had to push myself and I kept thinking, ‘Mark, ang puso, laban dapat!” and I’m glad people I performed convincingly in this role.”
It was so convincing that Mark is now doing a double take on the same character. Although it seems that Kyle is now humbled by his love for Chelsea, their relationship is not without its share of challenges.
In “Mr. Popular Meets Ms. Nobody 2: Still in Love”, one of those challenges come in the form and shape of Mandy, Kyle’s ex-girlfriend portrayed by Yassi Pressman. As if that does not complicate matters enough, there’s also Kyle’s father (Lander Vera Perez) who wants him in an arranged marriage.
And then there’s also Adrian (Diego Loyzaga), the best friend of Kyle who still has the hots for Chelsea. He is still around and ready to take his place if the two young lovers don’t pan out.
“Unlike the first series na medyo pa-tweetums pa kami, dito mas mature na ang characters. Marami pa ring kilig moments pero I think mas medyo drama na siya compared to the first book,” Mark pointed out.
This also means that Mark once again finds himself in familiar territory of facing new challenges. But that is something that’s no longer news for him. Even as he already improved on his Tagalog, he continues to accept projects that will allow him to continue his mastery of the national language.
Recently, Mark was invited to be reader in the Inquirer Read-Along series along with Jasmine Curtis-Smith and Gilas Pilipinas and Talk ‘N Text Tropang Texters forward Ranidel De Ocampo. As a first-time reader, he said the experience was very memorable to him in more ways than one.
“I’m happy and thankful to be reading for kids. But when they showed me the book, I found it to be malalim, Tagalog na Tagalog, so I practiced it repeatedly before I faced the kids and I’m glad that it went well with them,” he admitted. “Yes, I was nervous but since I’m always looking forward to experiencing new things, I’m glad I was able to do this.”
Again written by Pinkyjhewelii, “Wattpad Presents: Mr. Popular Meets Ms. Nobody 2: Still in Love” airs on TV5 every weekday this week at 9:30PM.

‘Breaking Bad’ anti-hero Walter White gets obit in Albuquerque newspaper
Fans mourning the loss of the gritty drug drama “Breaking Bad” and its main character, chemistry-teacher-turned-meth-kingpin Walter White, memorialized the fictitious druglord on Friday with a real obituary in an Albuquerque newspaper.
Members of the Facebook page “Unofficial Breaking Bad Fan Tour” and local high school science teacher David Layman, who appeared as an extra in the show’s pilot, purchased advertising space for the 87-word tribute in the Albuquerque Journal, the newspaper reported.
“White, Walter aka ‘Heisenberg,’ 52, of Albuquerque, died Sunday after a long battle with lung cancer, and a gunshot wound,” read the ad, which ran on page A4 on Friday. “He will be greatly missed.”
The ad also urged readers to donate to drug abuse prevention programs.
“Putting the obit in the paper was fitting, because the series was based in Albuquerque and it provides some of us some closure,” Layman told the paper.
The AMC drama, which concluded on Sunday, chronicled the transformation of White from a high school teacher scrambling to secure his family’s finances after a terminal cancer diagnosis to the commander of an illegal methamphetamine empire. It won best drama series for its fifth season at the Emmy awards last month.
Sunday’s 75-minute finale showed White, played by Bryan Cranston, tie up the loose ends of his crumbling drug empire and die just as the police finally catch up with him.
The conclusion drew 10.3 million viewers, the show’s biggest audience for any single episode of its five seasons.

NBA star LeBron James to produce cable TV comedy series
LOS ANGELES | Basketball star LeBron James will serve as an executive producer on a forthcoming television comedy series about two men who rise from poverty to fame and fortune, U.S. cable network Starz said on Tuesday.
“Survivor’s Remorse,” a scripted half-hour comedy series still under development, is the Miami Heat player’s first venture in TV production. James previously produced an animated internet series about himself called “The LeBrons” in 2011 and the 2008 documentary film “More Than a Game.”
Fellow executive producers of “Survivor’s Remorse” include Tom Werner, who produced the long-running TV situation comedies “The Cosby Show” and “Roseanne,” and “Glee” actor Mike O’Malley.
The series centers on two cousins who escape an impoverished upbringing in Philadelphia for a life in the spotlight.
Starz, which also airs the series “The White Queen,” said the new comedy will deal with the challenges of success, money and the guilt of rising out of poverty while friends and former neighbors remain poor.
James, 28, a two-time NBA champion who has been selected as the league’s top player four times, grew up poor in Akron, Ohio.
James, widely considered the best basketball player in the world, is the second-highest-earning American athlete, with annual salary and endorsements worth $56.5 million, according to Sports Illustrated.
Other executive producers include his manager and childhood friend Maverick Carter and business partner Paul Wachter.
Starz did not say when the series would begin airing.

Ten years after ‘The O.C.’
It’s difficult to believe that a decade has passed since a sun-kissed teen soap set in Newport Beach, California, made its debut. For two and a half seasons out of its four-year run, The O.C. was the biggest, bloggiest thing in the pop-culture universe.
The primetime Fox melodrama had the elements of great television: turmoil and tragedy, alpha kids and assholes, sidekicks and secrets. Not only did The O.C. turn fresh faces into household names. At its zenith it made an unlikely star out of a Southern California coastal town that was, in fact, a hyperreal conflation of several Southern California coastal towns.
Self-awareness
The O.C. tread on the dewy slope of teen TV before social media and online streaming altered the dynamic between shows and potential fans. I can’t recall exactly how I found out about it in the fall of 2003, but I’m certain that it’s the first show I ever loved and the last one I watched — along with One Tree Hill — while it was actually on. There were no on-screen hashtags to emphasize key scenes. Neither were there tweets that poked holes in the plotline. Without those distractions, The O.C. felt like it was made specifically for me and my friends.
While the pilot yielded some truly golden scenes, it would be a mistake to assume that the show began and ended with the catchphrase “Welcome to the O.C., bitch!” It extended beyond its narrative to establish a brand of self-awareness that would not only define itself, but also the era which produced it.
With the exception of 2000’s short-lived Grosse Pointe — a WB nighttime soap about a fictitious WB nighttime soap, also called Grosse Pointe – I had never seen anything that mocked itself so casually as The O.C. “Remember The Valley? The show-within-a-show on The O.C. that had Ryan and Seth and Marissa and Summer parroting all the things fans of The O.C. were saying about them?” wrote GQ’s Daniel Riley.
Surplus of youth
Then, of course, came the characters, a surplus of youth perfumed, it would seem, by sunblock. Seth (Adam Brody), the Woody Allen for the early aughts; Ryan (Ben McKenzie), the brooding outsider with a taste for wifebeaters; Marissa (Mischa Barton), the poor little rich girl with cheekbones that recall a typical Byzantine Madonna; and Summer (Rachel Bilson), the BFF who was surprisingly capable of both nouns and verbs.
“You know — never say never,” Barton, 27, told Us Weekly on the possibility of a 10-year reunion. “But, I think things have to feel right and it doesn’t feel right.” Of the core four, her Marissa Cooper was the only one to be mercy-killed, perishing in a car accident at the end of the third season to Imogen Heap’s Hallelujah. Looking back, the London-born actress seemed set for dizzying echelons of megastardom. But following her exit from The O.C., she has struggled to regain a semblance of a noteworthy career. In 2009, her CW series The Beautiful Life: TBL was canceled after only two episodes due to astonishingly low ratings.
Burn bright, burn fast
The rest of the cast, meanwhile, has had better luck. Ben McKenzie went on to star in the excellent cop drama Southland. Rachel Bilson is still visible on the small screen, playing the titular character on The CW’s Hart of Dixie. Adam Brody has since appeared in a string of film roles, from Mr. & Mrs. Smith and Jennifer’s Body to Scream 4 and Lovelace. Gossip Girl’s Dan Humphrey was supposedly the beta version of his Seth Cohen, but I see it more in the person of Stiles Stilinski, Dylan O’Brien’s Teen Wolf character.
The Internet still simmers with The O.C. worship, though it does so at a respectful distance. As series creator Josh Schwartz —who, at 26, became one of the youngest executive producers of a network series — told TVGuide.com, “I think shows like this tend to happen no matter what. They really capture a time and a moment and they burn really, really bright but they burn really fast.”
Truth be told, hearing the strains of any Phantom Planet song — or anything from the soundtrack, really — still leaves me a little misty-eyed. I will always remember how it was when The O.C. first aired, when life was easy, the world was new and I was that young.

New Dr. Who named
LONDON - Scottish actor Peter Capaldi, best known as the abusive spin doctor in satire "The Thick of It," was on Sunday named as the new eponymous star of cult British series "Doctor Who."
The BBC unveiled the 55-year-old Glaswegian as the 12th Time Lord during a live program on Sunday evening.
"Being asked to play the Doctor is an amazing privilege. Like the Doctor himself I find myself in a state of utter terror and delight. I can't wait to get started," said Capaldi, who will replace outgoing Doctor Matt Smith.
"It's so wonderful not to keep this secret any longer, but it's been so fantastic," he added.
Executive producer and lead writer Steven Moffat said an "incendiary combination" had been forged.
"One of the most talented actors of his generation is about to play the best part on television," he added.
Capaldi hit the big screen in 2009, playing the Machiavellian Malcolm Tucker in political comedy "In The Loop," where he starred alongside the late James Gandolfini.
The science fiction adventures of the Time Lord -- a time travelling, humanoid alien who traverses the universe in Tardis spacecraft -- have maintained a loyal following since they were first aired in 1963.

‘Game of Thrones’ favored over ‘American Horror Story’ in Emmys
LOS ANGELES – Although “American Horror Story: Asylum” bested HBO’s fantasy epic “Game of Thrones” in picking up the most Primetime Emmy nominations on Thursday, the fright-filled FX miniseries could face another tough year at the fickle Emmys.
“It’s cursed by being in the horror genre,” Hollywood awards show handicapper Tom O’Neil of Goldderby.com said. “Emmy voters, like Oscar voters, are horrified of the horror genre and tend to stay away.”
The torture-filled miniseries set in a nun-run mental hospital picked up the same number of nominations as its predecessor, “American Horror Story: Murder House,” did last year, and “Murder House” was only able to win two Emmys – best hairstyling and best supporting actress, both in a miniseries.
It was not the only show to flop at last year’s Emmys, the top awards in U.S. television. Perennial favorite “Mad Men,” the depiction of the 1960s Madison Avenue advertising world, set a record for losses, walking away empty-handed after 17 nominations.
The Emmys honor a broad swath of television production, from the pinnacle prize of best drama series to more obscure ones like best sound mixing for non-fiction programming. There are 537 separate nominations and HBO alone picked up 20 percent of those.
The Time Warner cable channel’s “Game of Thrones” racked up 16 nods and should run away with victories in many categories, O’Neil said.
“‘Game of Thrones’ will sweep those tech categories,” the analyst said of its nominations in best sound editing, visual effects and single-camera picture editing for a drama series, among others.
But the handicapper, who said it has also been difficult in the past for fantasy series to break through in top categories, believes “Game of Thrones” is poised to cash in for nods in best drama series and best writing in a drama series.
“Suddenly what was unthinkable last year is possible,” O’Neil said. “It can win.”
VOTERS WARMING
One element working in “Game of Thrones” favor is the broad range of nominees put forward by voters. The series goes up against the likes of British period drama “Downton Abbey” and anti-terror thriller “Homeland,” last year’s top drama.
“But whereas ‘Downton’ may not have matched the quality of its earlier seasons this year, ‘Game of Thrones’ had its best and most-watched season yet, and made demonstrable inroads with actors, too,” wrote The Hollywood Reporter’s Scott Feinberg.
Peter Dinklage, who won best supporting actor for “Game of Thrones” in 2011, picked up his third consecutive nomination in the category, and fellow cast member Emilia Clarke scored her first Emmy nod in the best supporting actress category.
Both O’Neil and Variety’s Justin Kroll said that although Academy of Television Arts and Sciences voters are often slow in warming to fantasy series, a show’s popularity may ultimately win out.
ABC’s top-rated fantasy drama “Lost” is one recent example as it won best drama series in 2005. “Game of Thrones,” to its credit, is HBO’s second-most watched TV drama in its history, behind only “The Sopranos.”
“For a show with a largely international cast that is shot far outside the confines of the U.S. (Ireland, Iceland, Bulgaria etc.), it took a little time for the creative community to wrap its arms around the epic fantasy,” Kroll wrote.
