UST signs up PLDT to enhance school's IT facilities

MANILA - The University of Santo Tomas (UST) has tapped Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co (PLDT) to boost the school's Internet connectivity and for its other information and communication technology requirements.

Under the agreement, PLDT ALPHA Enterprise will provide an initial 100 megabytes per second of its premium i-Gate connectivity to facilitate bandwidth-heavy projects and strengthen connections within and between UST and its partners.

“The main purpose of the current subscription is for the educational use of the Thomasian community, alumni, guests, and other partner institutions,” said Engr. Sebastian Raymond A. Mendoza, STEPs Director.
The Santo Tomas e-Service Providers (STePs) is the school's internal network connectivity facility.

"Communications through the Internet using our online resources, like the institution and department websites, will serve as an effective and faster way of information dissemination," he said in a statement.

Other external projects that will benefit from the connectivity enhancements of the university include the online encoding of grades, full implementation of online registration and enrolment, extended webhosting, server co-location services, and many more.  Future campus expansion requirements are also considered in the technical ICT development project.

Asia’s oldest university is also the first to implement a 10G campus backbone cabling and a Cisco model infrastructure from core to access. Its facilities have received ISO 9001:2008 TUV-SUD certification which have been constantly upgraded to cater to the connectivity needs of the campus, making it the biggest bandwidth requirement among local universities.

“We consider many factors in choosing the right Internet service providers that should meet the standards required by the university. Reliable support is the primary reason in considering an industry partner, as support should always be felt and delivered on a timely basis,” said Mendoza.

UST’s IT facilities will benefit from PLDT’s fiber optic network, which spans more than 71,000-kilometers nationwide.

“PLDT has constantly invested in our network to assure our customers of the service and reliability that their organizations need. Our facilities always undergo the necessary upgrades to meet global standards and handle the growing demand for dependable and consistent connectivity,” said PLDT first vice president and head of ALPHA Enterprise Jovy Hernandez.

“We are ready to serve UST with whatever ICT needs that they’d need to benefit the students, faculty members, the administration, and the whole Thomasian community in keeping their global-standards of education,” Hernandez said.

The $1 billion resort casino aims to hire 4,600 employees for its first phase.

“PLDT was the only one we could count on to achieve ICT integration in the short window of time available. They brought together the platforms, the subject matter experts, the technologies that were crucial to Solaire’s gaming experience,” he added.

Make the most out of your prepaid subscription

Being practical is the way to go these days. Whether you are in possession of a huge savings bank account or of a small ceramic piggy bank, it’s always best to look for the best value out of every purchase or investment that you make. This is also true for every prepaid subscription.

With the freedom to choose and the numerous choices out there, these simple tips will help you make the most out of what you may already have and out of what you still can get from a mobile service.

Choose the right SIM card. It’s in that life-changing decision of choosing the right SIM card. Getting a new number has become more personalized now than ever. On top of its specialized SIM offerings, Sun Cellular brings in the first-in-the-country Name Ur Number SIM which gives you the chance to choose your desired mobile number and lets you have the satisfaction of personalizing your own number.

Know the load that fits you well. Regardless of what’s hot and what trends on Twitter, it’s always best to choose a load that fits your lifestyle. Whether you’re an avid texter or someone who just likes the convenience of making calls, Sun Cellular anyway does a great job in mixing and matching these basic services, turning them into unlimited offerings and topping them up with more value-added services like mobile internet, texts to other networks and calls and texts abroad.

Then again, it also wouldn’t hurt to explore and spice your life up with loads that can multi-task like the Sun Call and Text Combo, Sun FBForever10 or any of the Sun TRIO loads. What’s there to lose with getting more services and more ways to reach friends, right?

Set your budget and stick to the friendliest retailer. With your busy lifestyle, it helps to set aside a part of your allowance or salary to save up on the higher amounts of loads that would last you a month like the Sun Text Unlimited 300 or for a half-month pay period like the Sun Call and Text Combo 150.

But if you wouldn’t mind frequent visits to your friendly retailer, then feel free to use up your change and explore loads like the Sun Winner Text 10 or the Sun Call and Text Combo 10. It will also help to have a suki or favourite Sun Prepaid retailer to recommend the latest and the most sulit loads out there.

Track the expiration and validity of your load. The most important tip among the bunch – know when your load will expire. The best thing about Sun Prepaid is its unique “Cumulative Expiry Feature”. In case your friend suddenly feels generous today and sends you Sun Call and Text Unlimited 25 via Give-a-Load over your current Sun Text Unlimited 200 subscription that’s just about to expire tomorrow, know that you’ll be getting an additional day of unlimited Sun texts and additional texts to other networks.

Given that Sun does its addition well, the value-seeker will find that no load will be wasted from overlapping with another. Sun makes sure that loads and validity periods add up. Just track your load validity and manage your usage well so there won’t be the inconvenience of zero balance for you.

Invite your friends to switch to Sun. Make your Sun subscription all the more worth it today by inviting more of your friends to join you in being with the country’s sunniest network. Maximize Sun’s unlimited services for nonstop chatting and sending messages to the whole group. Surf the ‘net even while on-the-go and post on each other’s Facebook Wall for free using Sun’s Forever Loads or Facebook Zero service.

While you enjoy all these, you also get to save up together and gather more funds for your next barkada adventure! Even more, getting in touch with each other from whichever part of the country is now even easier with Sun’s wider coverage nationwide, supported by PLDT.

Because you value your hard-earned money, individuality, and social connections, Sun Cellular makes sure to help you nurture these through its best-value offerings. And with a little help from these tips, just be sure to keep making the good choice of staying with your best-value, Sun Prepaid.

Earlier, PLDT partnered with Clickplay.ph to movie-streaming service to Fibr broadband subscribers.

Clickplay.ph has over 70 Hollywood movies in its database, including The Dark Knight Rises, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, The Hangover, Happy Feet and Superman Returns, among others.

Its movie list is expected to grow to about 200 by March and will soon include Filipino movies.

“PLDT is committed to provide consumers an integrated offering combining the best of voice, broadband, and content services to sustain market leadership, and we will soon be launching more new services as part of this commitment,” said Fermin.

PLDT borrows $300 million to refinance debt

MANILA - Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co has borrowed $300 million from foreign banks to refinance existing debts.

On the sidelines of the Philippine Investments Forum 2013, Annabelle Chua, PLDT treasurer on Wednesday, said the fresh loan was signed last January.

Last November, PLDT borrowed P6.20 billion. It also raised P8.80 billion worth of fixed-rate corporate notes to a group of primary institutional lenders to refinance its existing debts.

At end-September, PLDT's total debt stood at $3.1 billion, including the $500 million owed by Digital Telecommunications Philippines Inc (Digitel), which PLDT acquired in 2011. Digitel operates Sun Cellular.

In the first nine months of 2012, PLDT's net income fell by 6 percent to P28.7 billion from the previous year's P30.6 billion.  For the third quarter alone, its profit slipped to P9.21 billion from P9.32 billion a year ago.

Consolidated service revenues rose 12 percent to P126.24 billion from P112.27 billion in 2011. In the third quarter, service revenues climbed to P41.52 billion from the previous year's P36.65 billion.

PLDT expands coverage of 100Mbps fiber Internet service

MANILA, Philippines — Telecom provider Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT) is expanding its ultra-fast home Internet service to other posh villages in Metro Manila, the company announced Tuesday.

Under the PLDT Fibr brand offering, the telco’s fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) Internet service enables download speeds of up to 100Mbps, or about a hundred times faster than the average download rates in the Philippines.

Initially available in upscale villages such as Ayala Alabang and Forbes Park, PLDT said it is expanding the service to cater to the following areas: East, West, North, and Northeast Green Hills, Acropolis, Green Meadows, La Vista, and Valle Verde in Quezon City; Alabang Hills, Alabang 400, and Hillsborough in Alabang, Muntinlupa; and Dasmariñas Village, San Lorenzo Village, and Urdaneta Village in Makati.

An 8Mbps plan from the service costs P3,500 per month, while a 15Mbps plan is available for P6,500 a month. A 100Mbps plan is also available for P20,000 a month.

Unlike cable Internet, which shares bandwidth among nearby customers, PLDT Head of Home Business Ariel Fermin said PLDT Fibr provides a “dedicated broadband connection” to every subscriber through its use of fiber-optic cables.

Fiber Internet uses fiber optic technology, which transmits data via light signals sent through hair-thin strands of pure glass. Instead of the usual copper going to the homes of customers, thin fiber optic cables will be used.

“All PLDT Fibr plans are equipped with an Optical Network Unit (ONU) Modem, which has a fiber optic cable connection that delivers its enviable ultra-high speed feature,” Fermin added.

The new platform will be able to deliver simultaneously voice, video and data services at much higher speeds and larger capacities than DSL or cable technologies, PLDT added.

The expansion of the service comes as the telco nears completion of the installation of 50,000 kilometers of fiber optic cable nationwide, part of its P67-billion network modernization program.

Just recently, the telco announced the completion of the $400 million Asia Submarine-Cable Express, touted as the largest-capacity international submarine cable system in the country, which links Japan, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore through a fiber optic cable.

The completion of the undersea cable system brings the telco’s local landing stations to three, enabling it to efficiently deliver bandwidth-heavy applications requiring Internet access the likes of VoIP, IP-based data, and other multimedia content.

PLDT allots P6 billion to grow TV5, Cignal; telco's 1Q profit down 6%

The board of Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT) has approved a multibillion-peso investment of its wholly-owned subsidiary in TV5 as the network aims to grow its market share by 30 percent by 2015.

Manuel V. Pangilinan, chairman of PLDT and ABC Development Corp. told reporters that its board approved a P6 billion investment by ePLDT, in the form of Philippine Depository Receipts (PDRs), in TV5 and Cignal TV.

ePLDT will subscribe to PDRs to be issued by MediaQuest Holdings Inc. and the proceeds from subscription will be invested by MediaQuest in TV5 and Cignal.

Of the total, P4.8 billion would be invested in TV5 to finance the state-of-the-art Media Center in Mandaluyong and the remaining P1.2 billion will be used to expand the operation of Cignal.

Pangilinan said TV5 expects to post a loss this year and smaller losses in 2013.

"By 2014, we expect to post a profit," he added.

Ray Espinosa, president and chief executive of TV5, said the network has grown its market share from 2.3 percent in 2007 to 18 percent at the end of 2011 for Metro Manila.

In addition, TV5's market share nationwide grew to 15.6 percent last year from 2.7 percent in 2007.

Espinosa said TV5's target market share nationwide is 30 percent by 2014 or 2015.

Cignal TV, the largest direct-to-home pay-TV operator in the Philippines has over 250,000 subscribers.

Investments in media had historically been made and managed through MediaQuest, a wholly-owned entity of the PLDT Beneficial Trust Fund.

PLDT's financial investment in the media industry is consistent with its overall strategy of evolving itself from a traditional telco into a multi-media service company.

With the direct investment, MediaQuest will serve as the anchor for the PLDT Group's media offerings through the creation of content, generation of new revenue streams and provision of direct access to overseas Filipino workers worldwide.

Group profit falls 6%

PLDT on Tuesday said its net income fell by six percent to P10.1 billion in the first quarter from P10.7 billion in the same period last year.

Its core profit, which excludes foreign exchange gains or losses and other non-recurring income, amounted to P9.3 billion, lower than the P10.6 billion in 2011.

Revenues rose by 13 percent to P42.8 billion.

The PLDT group’s total cellular subscriber base stood at 66.1 million with net additions of 2.4 million in the first quarter. Its broadband subscribers hit three million.

“Our first quarter results are in line with our expectations that industry stability would return in gradual but quite certain terms. As we continue the complex task of integrating Digitel/Sun Cellular into the PLDT Group, we are heartened by the opportunities for both synergy and growth we see arising. In the meantime, we are pursuing further rationalization measures, which may be somewhat adverse in the short-term but should produce sustainable, longer-term benefits. Similarly, the financial investment in media is important and expected to create value over a longer time frame but is one that is necessary for our growth and transformation,” Pangilinan said.

Napoleon L. Nazareno, president and chief executive of PLDT and unit Smart Communications Inc., said the company is beginning to see early signs of stability with the integration of Digitel.

"We expect a gradual improvement in product yields and overall profitability from the ongoing rationalization on both services and brands front. More importantly, we continue to push our network modernization program even as our subscribers are already experiencing the benefits of our ongoing efforts,” he added.
