CES 2017 | Razer unveils concept laptop for multi-monitor immersive gaming

LAS VEGAS, Nevada – Razer revealed a multi-monitor laptop computer concept that sets a new standard for immersive entertainment and multipurpose portable computing at the ongoing Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Dubbed “Project Valerie,” the system is the world’s first portable laptop with three built-in monitors. Each 17.3-inch 4K IGZO display is equipped with Nvidia G-Sync technology that is capable of producing the smoothest possible framerates and expansive 180 degree Nvidia Surround View gaming. Creative professionals can look forward to 100 percent Adobe RGB color accuracy and the greatest amount of screen real estate ever assembled in a single computer.

Project Valerie uses an automatic deployment mechanism designed by Razer. Each display mechanically slides out of the side of the main screen and adjusts into place, making it easy for users to deploy. With integrated multi-monitor support, users will no longer have to deal with the cable clutter from traditional desktop setups. The result is a clean gaming and working environment that’s just as easy to maintain.

“The complexities of a traditional multi-monitor setup are a thing of the past with Project Valerie,” says Razer co-founder and CEO Min-Liang Tan. “Equally important, the power of a desktop computer and graphics capabilities of three top-end monitors are included in the system. There is no shortcoming in the way of performance in the face of its amazing portability and features.”

Project Valerie adds to the professional capabilities of the new 17-inch Razer Blade Pro. The system was conceived with enthusiasts and power users in mind who want multitasking capabilities and desktop performance on the go. Packed with more screens than previously possible in a notebook, Razer’s Project Valerie is capable of handling virtually any PC task, anytime, anywhere.

The proposed system retains the iconic Razer design, while at the same time accommodating triple-monitors. A unibody CNC aluminum chassis measures just 1.5-inches thick and weighs less than 12 pounds. An included compact AC adapter is much smaller than similarly powered systems, furthering complementing Project Valerie’s mobility.

Project Valerie retains the remarkable thermal management system for which Razer’s line of laptops is known. A custom-designed fan and dynamic heat exchangers pair with a vapor chamber to maximize heat dissipation.

Project Valerie is the second Razer notebook to utilize Razer’s Ultra-Low-Profile Mechanical switches. Each switch features a true actuation and reset point. Key presses are registered with 65 grams of force, mimicking the feel of full-size mechanical keyboards. The keyboard, trackpad, extended monitors are also Powered by Razer Chroma, which unlocks a virtually endless array of dazzling lighting effects that can be customized by the user or synced to in-game events.

Similar to Razer’s newest systems, Project Valerie equipped with Nvida GeForce GTX 1080 exceeds the minimum hardware requirements of HTC Vive and Oculus Rift, making it one of the most immersive, mobile VR-ready devices for enthusiasts and developers.

“Multi-monitor desktop set-ups are becoming more necessary for professionals, creators, and gamers,” says Tan. “For the first time, we’ve engineered a solution that users can take with them. Project Valerie promises all of the functionality of three screens and none of the hassle.”

With unmatched specs and industry-leading innovations, the Republic of Gamers rocks the entire gaming industry with the ROG GX700′s liquid-cooled design — a world’s first — guaranteeing users a gaming experience like never before.

With such an incredible feat, the Republic of Gamers makes another unprecedented move by inviting only a select few to get to experience for themselves just how powerful and one-of-a-kind this gaming laptop is.

Only 20 of the country’s most avid and top gamers and hardcore users will only be able to exclusively get their hands on this limited-edition beast of a machine as it set to hit the Philippine shores. These very few, lucky individuals – collectively, the “Legendary 20” – will surely make history as one of the first people to experience the powerhouse gaming device that is the ROG GX700

The perks and the works: The ultra-exclusive ‘Legendary 20′

For the Legendary 20, the ROG GX700 is packed with an arsenal of accessories and items that will further highlight the exclusivity of this elite gaming group: an ROG Sica Gaming Mouse, ROG Command Case (a premium black luggage case that not only ensures that the ROG GX700 is kept safe, but also for the user to bring the ROG GX700 wherever you want in absolute comfort and style); a Personalized Legendary 20 Luggage Tag (a stylish bag tag that proudly displays the name of the respective owner) and finally, a Legendary 20 Jacket (a decked-out Legendary 20 signature-style jacket tailor-fit to the Legendary 20 member).

GX700 – Desktop class performance in a laptop

The flagship GX700VO being the world’s first water-cooled gaming laptop is capable of overclocking because of its exclusive hydro overclocking system.

Powering up this beast is a powerful Intel Core i7-6820HK (Overclocking Unlocked) Quad-Core processor. When the laptop is docked to its water-cooling station, the said CPU can be overclocked to a remarkable 4GHz in stable voltage. In addition, the onboard 32GB DDR4 RAM at 2133MHz can also be overclocked as high as to 2800 MHz.

Of course graphics is also Best in Class. The ROG GX700VO is equipped with a desktop class NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 that has 8GB of GDDR5 VRAM. When water-cooled, it allows the chip to run in its full potential, thereby eliminating the bottleneck of low thermal headroom. Speed is not only in processing but also in storage on the GX700VO, which is packed with two 256GB NVMe PCIe SSD set-up in RAID0, allowing up to 3.5GB/s read/write speeds.

And highlighting the trump card of this notebook, the “Hydro Cooling System,” which made this notebook the world’s first water-cooled notebook, is the pinnacle of this year’s innovation for ASUS and ROG. Featuring two radiators, and a behemoth of fans with variable speed control through the built-in ROG Command Control Center software; the cooling module allows for the system to run cooler in idle, and be overclocked as wanted, or needed, and allows for a full desktop replacement for all those wanting to lug around a system that’s highly capable of Full-HD gaming.

MWC 2016 | Here is Huawei’s 2-in-1 style laptop

BARCELONA, Spain — Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei launched a 2-in-1 product that combines the mobility of a smartphone and productivity of a laptop at the World Mobile Congress in Barcelona on Sunday, marking the firm’s latest step to expand its consumer business.

The device, called the Huawei MateBook, retails from 799 euros in the European market and 699 U.S. dollars in the U.S. market. It will be made available across international markets from April onwards through both retail and e-commerce channels.

The core device of the MateBook is a tablet with a detachable keyboard much like Apple’s iPad Pro, and runs Microsoft’s latest operating system Windows 10.

It weighs 640 grams, compared to 713 grams for Apple’s iPad Pro and the 766 grams of Microsoft’s Surface Pro 4, both of which are portable tablets known for their lightweight design. It has a 12-inch screen.

The Huawei MateBook has a high-density lithium battery, which lasts for 10 hours once fully charged. The product features a sixth generation Intel Core m-series processor aimed at handling the most rigorous business demands.

Built to operate on Windows 10, the MateBook also delivers tools and features offered by Microsoft Corp, including its latest browser, Microsoft Edge, and the Cortana digital personal assistant.

“We have decided to launch this product to answer the needs of business users. What makes our MateBook unique are are its compatibility and huge variety of functions,” said Glory Zhang, chief marketing officer of Huawei Consumer Business.

Although MateBook is being launched later than other comparable tablets, Zhang said it is no cause for concern because Huawei’s strategy is to bring to market products once the technology involved can best satisfy consumer needs.

“We are not so concerned about being the first in a market. For example, when we launched our smartphone, the market was already filled with many smartphone makers, but our high quality allowed us to win market share.”

“We have made good use of cutting edge technologies that we developed for our smartphone in our MateBook, which gives us a competitive strength,” Zhang says.

Huawei, founded in Shenzhen in 1987, has three core business areas. Its carrier business provides telecommunications services to operators like O2 and Telefonica, and it provides telecommunications services to corporate clients. Its third business area is consumer products.

In recent years its consumer business has picked up and has become a key factor in helping build the firm’s brand across international markets. Its core products include the Huawei smartphone and Huawei Watch.

Huawei is now the third-biggest player in the smartphone market after Apple and Samsung, and shipped 108 million smartphones in 2015, which represents a 44 percent increase in sales compared to 2014.

Now Huawei is looking to make a major play in the tablet sector. Globally, tablet shipments fell 13.7 percent year-on-year in the fourth quarter of 2015, while shipments for detachable tablets reached an all-time high of 8.1 million devices, more than double from the same period in 2014, according to the research firm International Data Corporation.

The Huawei MateBook is being launched alongside the MatePen, which is used to write and draw on the MateBook. It has high sensitivity, can support graphics and mathematic functions and can be used as a laser pointer for delivering presentations.

The MateBook also has a one-touch unlocking system, which Huawei says is the fastest fingerprint recognition technology in the industry. Its technology supports 360 degrees sensitive identification, which leads to fewer identification failures than competitor technology.

The keyboard that accompanies MateBook features 1.5 millimeter keystroke and a Chiclet keycap design, which allows for larger key surfaces to minimize typing errors. The built-in touchpad uses multi-touch technology that supports finger movement and effectively combines comfort with function.

Dell Latitude E7440: Worth anyone’s business

Achieving better mobility with your notebooks is not only the boon for consumer devices nowadays.

What we are seeing is an influx of thinner offerings with a myriad of features targeted at the business
user.

This is what Dell’s business laptop — the Dell Latitude E7440 — is all about. It takes off from current consumer offerings, such as a thin chassis and an incredible matte 1920×1080 full-HD IPS 14” display, yet provides optimum security features you won’t find in just any other similar offering.

What impressed me first about the E7440 was its silver casing made of materials such as aluminum and magnesium alloy. Before even opening it, the E7440 looked sleek and sturdy — a treat for one to see or touch. It has a thickness of only 2.1 centimeters and weighs just over one and a half kilos, surely not a hassle for people on the go.

Its 1.9Ghz Intel i5-4300U CPU and 256-GB SSD was quite evident in its boot-up speed. In just about ten seconds, I am in my Windows 8.1 main screen, ready to begin my “stress test.” But, as I checked the available applications, none of any of the widely used PC apps were installed. Bummer. So I had to make a trial subscription to Office 365 to get the suite and freeware to continue with the review. Although,
most of the time I simply made do with Internet browsing.

One major setback was that it also did not have a built-in DVD drive, something that’s quite expected of a business laptop. As such, be ready with your portable external hard drive if you want to easily install your office programs or link to the office network or cloud to sync with your business applications.

However, all in all, I had no major problems — except for instances when the system froze and I needed to reboot. Also, logging in was a pain because I opted using my Live.com account to access Windows,  something I don’t recommend. Setting up a username and password from Windows 8 itself would do.

Apart from the usual Windows hang-ups, the E7440 gives the user the inherent mobility it espouses and the performance it touts with its 4GB RAM, allowing the flexibility of handling several complex computer tasks—enhancing images, watching videos online, accessing a hybrid cloud, completing office tasks, updating social media accounts, and even playing an online game (shhh…) at the
side- simultaneously, wherever I am (depending where the broadband signal is faster).

However, it did lag on several occasions, sometimes even at the login screen itself — when I had to wait for a good two minutes before I could type in my credentials. And when it began processing the subsequent requests, it again stalled for a good three minutes before the Windows 8 main screen finally appeared.

The business laptop

A good point for the E7440 is its attractive and vivid display. It boasts of a vibrant color contrast as RGB (reds, greens, blues) register on screen pretty well with incredible clarity and on vertical or horizontal viewing angles. It also offers impressive sound quality with its speakers (located at the bottom of the chassis) producing solid and loud audio levels without any tinge of distortion.

But, the keyboard was a lowdown—as it was too feeble to even follow our fingers’ instructions, flexing at the slightest amount of pressure. This oftentimes becomes irritating when you try to key in multitudes of characters at the shortest time possible, as it forces you to stop and correct what you
type.

In contrast, the touch pad offers an excellent interface to initialize programs with its smooth surface, which allows your fingers to easily traverse it. And, surprisingly, its pointing stick offers a good alternative, offering great accuracy.

Despite the obvious hang-ups, it is still worth paying a steep price for the Dell E7740 as it offers what any business user or traveller will look for in a laptop—easy to use, easy to bring along, and a solid performer they can rely on.
