Google’s two OSs to become one
BEIJING — Two operation systems(OSs) operated by Google are to be combined into one.
The Internet company is reportedly planning to build its Chrome operating system for personal computers into its Android mobile-operating system.
Google sets such plans as Android has emerged as the dominant operating system by quite a long stretch. It is also regarded as a sign of the growing dominance of mobile computing.
Combining the two operating systems means setting up Android to run on laptops and desktop computers, which would require big changes.
For instance, Android will have to support the Google Play Store. Chromebooks will reportedly receive a new name to reflect the new OS.
The new operating system is expected to be ready sometime in 2017.

US urges removing Superfish program from Lenovo laptops
BOSTON — The U.S. government on Friday advised Lenovo Group Ltd customers to remove “Superfish,” a program pre-installed on some Lenovo laptops, saying it makes users vulnerable to cyberattacks.
The Department of Homeland Security said in an alert that the program makes users vulnerable to a type of cyberattack known as SSL spoofing, in which remote attackers can read encrypted Web traffic, redirect traffic from official websites to spoofs, and perform other attacks.
“Systems that came with the software already installed will continue to be vulnerable until corrective actions have been taken,” the agency said.
Adi Pinhas, chief executive of Palo Alto, California-based Superfish, said in a statement that his company’s software helps users achieve more relevant search results based on images of products viewed. He said the vulnerability was “inadvertently” introduced by Israel-based Komodia, which built the application described in the government notice.
Komodia CEO Barak Weichselbaum declined comment on the vulnerability.
Lenovo apologized late on Friday in a statement for “causing these concerns among our users” and said that it was “exploring every action we can” to address the issues around Superfish, including offering tools to remove the software and certificate.
“We ordered Superfish pre-loads to stop and had server connections shut down in January based on user complaints about the experience. However, we did not know about this potential security vulnerability until yesterday (Thursday),” the Lenovo statement said.
“We recognise that this was our miss, and we will do better in the future. Now we are focused on fixing it,” the company said.
Komodia’s website says it produces a “hijacker” that allows users to view data encrypted with SSL technology.
“The hijacker uses Komodia’s redirector platform to allow you easy access to the data and the ability to modify, redirect, block, and record the data without triggering the target browser’s certification warning,” according to the site.
Marc Rogers, a researcher with CloudFlare, said that means companies which deploy Komodia technology can snoop on web traffic.
“These guys can do everything from just collect a little bit of marketing information, all the way to building a profile on you and spying on your banking connections,” he said. “It’s a very dangerous slope.”
Rogers said that use of Komodia’s technology in other products makes them vulnerable to the same types of attacks as Lenovo’s Superfish.
He said other vulnerable products include two parental filters: One from Komodia known as KeepMyFamilySecure and another from Qustodio.
Komodia’s Weichselbaum said his company was investigating reports of vulnerabilities in KeepMyFamilySecure.
Qustodio CEO Eduardo Cruz Chief Executive said his company’s Windows parental filter was vulnerable and he hoped to push out a fix within a few days.
Lenovo did not disclose how many machines were affected, but said that only machines shipped from September to December of last year had been pre-loaded with the vulnerable software.
Affected Lenovo products include laptops in its Yoga, Flex and MiiX lines as well as its E, G, U, Y and Z series, according to the company’s support website.

AMD announces new embedded chips as PC business shrinks
SAN FRANCISCO — Advanced Micro Devices Inc, targeting new markets as personal computer sales decline, unveiled chips designed to run slot machines, factory robots, airport signs, medical equipment and other devices.
One of Silicon Valley’s oldest chipmakers, AMD has been losing money as consumers increasingly favor tablets over laptops and desktops.
AMD wants to customize more of its chips for a wide range of non-PC devices. It expects PC chip designs modified for those new devices to account for at least a fifth of its revenue by the end of 2013.
The chips announced Monday, all code-named after predatory birds such as the Bald Eagle, are for graphics, low-power devices and high-performance computing. They will be available next year.
AMD is planning a push into the small but growing microserver market, combining ARM Holdings’ architecture typically used in smartphones with the x86 architecture common in servers. Unlike ARM chips for smartphones, AMD’s ARM chips will be 64 bits, allowing them to make better use of memory in data centers.
“With x86 it’s something we’ve had a long time. With ARM, we’re helping build the 64-bit ecosystem along with industry leaders,” Arun Iyengar, general manager of embedded solutions at AMD, told reporters at a news conference.
Asked about progress in non-PC markets, Iyengar said AMD’s chips are widely used in airplanes’ heads-up displays as well as in medical imaging equipment and factory robots.
AMD processors are being used in Microsoft Corp’s upcoming Xbox One and Sony Corp’s next-generation PlayStation game consoles, both set to launch later this year.
Worldwide shipments of PCs are likely to fall 9.7 percent this year as consumers continue to favor mobile gadgets, IDC said in a recent report.

Lenovo knocks HP from top of global PC market: Gartner
SAN FRANCISCO/HONG KONG — China’s Lenovo Group Ltd edged out Silicon Valley icon Hewlett-Packard Co to become the world’s No. 1 PC maker in the third quarter, according to data released by research house Gartner on Wednesday.
A rival to Gartner, IDC, still ranks HP in the lead – but by less than half a percentage point – in terms of PC shipments worldwide. Both studies reinforce HP’s struggles against rivals as new chief executive Meg Whitman tries to overhaul the stalled 73-year-old company.
Worldwide shipments of personal computers fell over 8 percent in the third quarter to 87.5 million, the steepest decline since 2001, Gartner analysts said.
PC demand growth has crumbled over the past year as more consumers flock to ultra-portable and increasingly powerful tablets and smartphones for basic computing.
“It’s quite a tough year for PC makers because (Microsoft’s) Windows 8 is not launched yet and some consumers are waiting for that. Cannibalisation of tablet PCs is also another factor,” said Eve Jung, an analyst with Nomura Securities in Taipei.
Both sets of data show that Lenovo, Taiwan’s Acer and other Asian PC makers are taking share away from U.S. competitors HP and Dell, which held on to the No. 3 spot in the quarter.
Lenovo, which has a market value of $8.2 billion, said it believed there was room for continued growth in the sector.
“We are establishing even deeper roots in each major market around the world. In addition to localized sales and distribution teams in major markets, we are establishing an even stronger manufacturing footprint,” Lenovo Chairman and CEO Yuanqing Yang said in a statement.
This year the company has bought Brazilian electronics maker CCE, valued at a base price of 300 million reais ($148 million), and U.S. cloud computing firm Stoneware.
China’s tech rise
Lenovo’s rise highlights the advance of China’s technology firms on the world stage in recent years as a result of aggressive pricing, overseas acquisitions, and taking advantage of a fast-growing home market.
The Chinese company, which vaulted into the PC market by buying IBM’s personal computer division in 2005, took the top spot for the first time by growing its market share to 15.7 percent, shipping an estimated 13.77 million units during the quarter, up nearly 10 percent from a year ago, Gartner said.
HP’s global PC share stood at 15.5 percent after shipping 13.55 million units, down 16.4 percent from a year ago, Gartner said, adding that this was the first time HP has not been the top-ranked PC vendor position since 2006.
IDC had HP at the No. 1 spot with a 15.9 percent market share, marginally ahead of Lenovo’s 15.7 percent share.
HP responded to Gartner’s study by saying IDC’s was more expansive.
“While there are a variety of PC share reports in the market, some don’t measure the market in its entirety,” HP said in a statement. “The IDC analysis includes the very important workstation segment, and therefore is more comprehensive.”
HP shares closed 1.32 percent lower at $14.18 on Wednesday, after touching $14.02, its lowest level since October 2002.
Lenovo’s shares ended up 0.3 percent on Thursday, compared with a 0.4 rise in the benchmark Hong Kong index.
Since the start of 2012, Lenovo’s shares have risen more than 9 percent, in contrast to a roughly 40 percent drop in HP’s stock, a 35 percent fall in Dell and Acer’s 21 percent slide.
Analysts say PC makers are suffering from still-sluggish growth in consumer and corporate spending across the globe, even in once-reliably hot markets like China, Lenovo’s home turf. The industry’s future is uncertain, partly because of a proliferation of computing devices from tablets of all sizes to smartphones.
“PCs are going through a severe slump,” said Jay Chou, senior research analyst at IDC’s Worldwide PC Tracker.
“A weak global economy as well as questions about PC market saturation and delayed replacement cycles are certainly a factor, but the hard question of what is the ‘it’ product for PCs remain unanswered.”

Acer, Samsung loosen grip as Philippine PC market plateaus in Q2 — IDC

MANILA, Philippines — PC shipments to the Philippines stagnated to a meager 1.5-percent growth in the 2nd quarter of the year, with leaders Acer and Samsung losing market share due to overstocking problems, research firm IDC reported recently.
Smaller PC vendors, IDC noted, outperformed both Acer and Samsung during the quarter as the former launched “aggressive pricing and hardware bundling strategies.”
The total number of PC units shipped within the quarter amounted to 551,000, more than half of which were consumer-grade notebooks.
While waning in numbers, the desktop form factor still turned out to be dominant during the 2nd quarter of the year, with over five desktops sold for every four notebooks, IDC found.
During the period, netbooks — or mininotebooks, as IDC calls it — gained renewed prominence among Filipino consumers as the smaller vendors were able to resolve the shortage of netbook processors reported in previous quarters.
“MNC PC brands are starting to encroach upon the market share of one another as the consumer market is not expanding at a rapid enough pace,” explained Juan-Jin Ng, market analyst for client devices research at IDC Asia/Pacific.
“As PC prices grow even more homogenous across most major brands, we will eventually see the stranglehold of the top 2 vendors on the retail market declining over the coming quarters,” he added.
Public-sector PC deployments, IDC noted, grew to a standstill during the second quarter, but incremental rollouts by the Department of Education helped boost commercial PC shipments to a 1.7 percent growth.
IDC believes the resilient Philippine economy, which grew by a rate of 5.9 percent from April to June, had likely contributed to a still positive growth rate during the period.
“The resilience of the economy in the Philippines to the global economic crises as well as the commitment of the current government towards IT spending has kept the overall commercial segment outlook positive,” Juan-Jin added.
Prospects aren’t too bright in the third quarter of the year for PC shipments, though, as vendors hold off on stocking current models in anticipation of Windows 8, due to be released on October 26.
“As such, the PC market should see a boost only in Q4. However, the PC market should find temporary respite in the commercial segment as government and enterprise spending, especially from BPOs, are expected to get underway in Q3,” the IDC analyst said.

Dell refreshes business notebook lineup, but no new ultrabooks in sight

MANILA, Philippines — While every other PC manufacturer in the world is unveiling their fresh takes on Intel’s ultrabook, technology company Dell decided to update its arsenal of laptops with the chipmaker’s latest Ivy Bridge processors.
Yet, despite the fresh processor bump for most of its notebooks in the Latitude and Vostro lines, Dell didn’t bring in an updated version of its ultrabook, the XPS 13, which was launched locally in April.
Dell Philippines Country Manager Christopher Papa told reporters at the sidelines of the launch that updating the XPS 13 is in their roadmap, although more focus is being given on their commercial business for now.
Nonetheless, Papa said they were not expecting the strong demand for their consumer-grade XPS 13 ultrabook, a 13-inch device squeezed into an 11-inch chassis that retails from P59,000 to P79,000 depending on the internal specifications.
Without mentioning figures, the Dell head honcho said they had to ramp up production of the sought-after notebook after initial shipments to various markets around the world failed to meet consumer demand.
But gaining market share in the consumer PC segment is far from Dell’s objectives moving forward, as declared by Papa in an earlier interview saying the company is focusing on high-margin segments of the business, particularly the enterprise market.
It is for this reason that majority of the products launched by Dell on Thursday are geared toward SMBs and large enterprises, two segments that are high-growth areas for the Round Rock, Texas-based company.
“Today’s launch is a testament to our commitment to end-user computing, and we have differentiated ourselves by adding more value to our products,” said Richard Teo, president at Dell Philippines.
“We have added a lot of technologies that surround manageability, security and system management to allow users to have full control of their units,” he added.
Durable, business-class notebooks
Bannering the new notebook offerings are the redesigned and re-engineered laptops in the Latitude line, targeted at enterprise-class customers, which feature the same look and feel as their predecessors but come fitted with Intel’s Ivy Bridge processors.
Johny Dermawan, senior brand manager at Dell South Asia, said the new Latitude laptops are “designed to be durable” considering the mobile needs of most workers today.
By tearing down one Latitude unit in front of the press, Dermawan demonstrated how the internal portions of the notebook was designed, starting with the magnesium alloy bottom cover that acts as the doorway to all of the unit’s components.
The new Latitude laptop’s internal parts and LCD screen are protected by a tri-metal chassis that keeps them in place and absorbs unintentional external pressure, which Dermawan said is a common occurrence with users fitting their laptops along with other things inside their bags. The specific models unveiled by Dell on Thursday include: The redesigned 14-inch Latitude E640; the E6230, E630, E6430 and E6530 notebooks measuring 12.5 to 15.6 inches; the E5430 and E5530 which are budget-friendly options for professionals; and the ruggedized E640 ATG notebook that can withstand extreme conditions.
Meanwhile, Dell’s Vostro line of PCs, which is targeted at small and medium businesses, received the following updates: the Vostro 3360 (13 inch), Vostro 3460 (14 inch) and Vostro 3560 (15 inch), which are designed to be thin and portable.
Dell’s new Latitude laptops are now available and will start retailing from P55,100, while the Vostro notebooks can be bought beginning next week although no price points have been detailed thus far.
