Apple helps iTunes users delete free U2 album
SAN FRANCISCO — Apple on Monday began helping people boot U2 off their iTunes accounts after a cacophony of complaints about not wanting the automatically downloaded free album by the Irish rock band.
U2 performed at the close of an Apple event last week marked by the unveiling of new large-screen iPhones, a smartwatch from the California company, and word that free copies of the band’s new “Songs of Innocence” album were instantly delivered to the more than half-billion iTunes accounts around the world.
The musical gift hit a sour note for iTunes users to took to social media to complain about precious iPhone storage space being taken up by a digital album they didn’t want and couldn’t figure out how to get rid of.
“If you would like U2′s Songs of Innocence’ removed from your iTunes music library and iTunes purchases, you can choose to have it removed,” Apple said at a freshly launched SOI Removal web page that let people delete the album with a click of an on-screen icon.
Apple warned that once “Songs of Innocence” was removed, it could not be gotten back free of charge.
“I managed to delete U2 off my iPhone. It’s a beautiful day,” one Twitter user said in a message playing off a verse from one of the band’s hit songs.
The digital album was made available free to anyone who has, or opens, an iTunes account by October 13.
U2 used the Apple event stage at a performing arts center near the iPhone, iPad, iPod, and Macintosh computer maker’s headquarters in the city of Cupertino to release their new album.
U2 frontman Bono described the album, the band’s first since “No Line on the Horizon” in 2009, as deeply personal and called the release “instant gratification.”
U2 — who released some of the most acclaimed albums in the 1980s including “The Joshua Tree” and “Rattle and Hum” — could have expected major sales for a new album.
While Apple did not disclose financial arrangements for the free release, U2 has collaborated for years on products with the company.

Beyonce album sets iTunes sales record, tops Billboard chart
LOS ANGELES | R&B star Beyonce’s latest self-titled album surpassed 1 million copies sold worldwide in six days on Wednesday and set a record for iTunes, Apple Inc. and Columbia Records said.
“Beyonce,” the fifth solo studio album from the singer, unexpectedly released in the early hours of December 13 without any prior fanfare, contains 14 new songs and 17 videos, and swiftly topped the iTunes album charts across the world.
The album also debuted at the top of the weekly Billboard 200 album chart on Wednesday, with 617,000 copies sold in the United States by the week ending December 15, according to figures from Nielsen SoundScan.
The deluxe digital album, exclusively available on iTunes, can only be purchased as a complete set of songs and videos, and retails for $15.99 at the U.S. store. A physical version will be made available for sale in time for the festive holiday period this month.
The surprise release of the album caps a year in which Beyonce, 32, made a carefully choreographed return to music after taking time out to give birth to her first child, daughter Blue Ivy with rapper husband Jay Z. Both Blue Ivy and Jay Z feature as collaborators on the new album, and appear in accompanying music videos.
Releasing an album without any prior fanfare or publicity is rare, especially for one of the top players in the current music industry. But Beyonce’s success does not necessarily mean other artists will be able to copy her stealth release strategy.
The singer has numerous factors in her favor, including a loyal online fanbase of more than 53 million Facebook fans, 13 million Twitter followers and 8 million Instagram fans, and a year performing in the spotlight that has created buzz for an album release.
Beyonce’s album has outperformed some of this year’s other most-anticipated new releases, selling more copies than new albums from Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Britney Spears.
Currently, the year’s top-selling album is Justin Timberlake’s first part of “The 20/20 Experience,” which was released in March with 968,000 copies sold in its opening week, and has topped 2.3 million sales in the U.S. to date.
Nielsen SoundScan compiles sales in the week ending Sunday, meaning that Beyonce’s new album only showed three days of sales in the Billboard chart.

Justin Timberlake puts the sexy into married life in new album
LOS ANGELES – After making the transition from child star and boy band heartthrob to movie star, Justin Timberlake is returning to music with his first album since 2006, cementing his grown-up status with a record inspired by his new marriage.
Timberlake, 32, officially releases “The 20/20 Experience” on Tuesday. But the 10-track record of smooth love songs with a throwback R&B sound is already No. 1 on the iTunes charts after it was streamed online last week.
The album is Timberlake’s first since “FutureSex/LoveSounds” which spawned hit pop singles “Sexyback” and “What Goes Around…Comes Around.”
Although lead single “Suit & Tie,” featuring rapper Jay-Z, failed to meet sales expectations on its first week of release in January, the album is expected to sell well following weeks of promotion including a Grammy Awards show performance and a stint by Timberlake on TV sketch show “Saturday Night Live.”
Industry sources cited by Billboard said “The 20/20 Experience” could sell 500,000 copies in its first week, and easily give Timberlake the No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200 album charts.
“The 20/20 Experience” sees Timberlake embracing his status as a married man after his wedding to actress Jessica Biel in October 2012.
The singer draws on lazy summer romances for the majority of his songs, with slow-tempo swing rhythms on tracks such as “Pusher Girl Love,” where Timberlake describes his addiction to a girl.
Jason Lipshutz at Billboard magazine gave the album an 88 out of 100 rating, saying that while the singer did not replicate the edgy pop sounds of earlier hits on his “FutureSex” album, he “has offered us something more complicated, although no less accessible.”
Rolling Stone magazine’s Jody Rosen praised the singer for being “such a charismatic and effortlessly appealing singer, dancer and showman,” and called the album “Timberlake’s neo-soul record.”
Timberlake has barely put a foot wrong in his transition from child star in the “Mickey Mouse Club” to popular boy band N’Sync, through to solo entertainer, actor and entrepreneur.
He has appeared in movies “The Social Network” and “Bad Teacher;” launched his own record label, Tennman Records; added clothing designer to his credits with label William Rast; and invested in social networking site MySpace.
His all-rounder status was showcased last week on “Saturday Night Live,” where he sang, danced and acted – and boosted ratings for the NBC show to a 14-month high.
In July he will embark on a “Legends of the Summer” tour of North American stadiums along with Jay-Z, and the pair will headline a London music festival in the same month.
While “Don’t Hold The Wall” – a steamy dance floor track with explicit connotations – harkens back to Timberlake’s “Sexyback” days, Biel is often at the forefront of the singer’s mind in the new album. “That Girl” is a sweet throwback R&B love song, while new single “Mirrors” is an ode to his new wife.
Los Angeles Times reviewer Mikael Wood gave the album three out of four stars, saying “Timberlake holds (the album) together too, with lyrics that stay resolutely on the topic of romance.”
Not all critics are swooning. Alexis Petridis of Britain’s Guardian newspaper gave “The 20/20 Experience” three out of five stars, but slammed Timberlake’s lyrics, which he called “awful.”
“It’s not that the lyrics are exclusively about sex; it’s that Timberlake writes about it in a way that suggests he’s desperate to add some kind of musical equivalent of the Bad Sex award to his six Grammys and four Emmys,” Petridis said.

Justin Bieber becomes youngest artist with five No. 1 albums
LOS ANGELES – Canadian pop star Justin Bieber became the youngest artist to land five chart-topping albums in the United States on Wednesday when his latest record, “Believe Acoustic,” debuted atop the Billboard 200 album chart.
“Believe Acoustic,” which features stripped down versions of Bieber’s songs from his fourth No. 1 album, “Believe,” released last June, as well as three new songs, sold 211,000 copies in its first week according to figures from Nielsen SoundScan.
The album also topped iTunes downloads charts in 63 countries, and became a hot topic on social media platforms as the singer’s 34 million-strong followers on Twitter raced to purchase the record as soon as it was released.
Bieber was previously tied with former Disney star Miley Cyrus with four chart-topping albums before turning 19, and he is only one of nine artists in Billboard history to have a No. 1 album for four consecutive years.
Bieber’s 19th birthday is March 1.
The singer, who failed to pick up a Grammy nomination this year despite having a top-selling album and sold-out world tour in 2012, will be hosting and performing on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” this week, the night before the Grammy awards.
Four new albums debuted in the top five of the Billboard 200 chart this week, led by “Believe Acoustic.”
Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli’s 14th studio album, “Passione,” landed at No. 2 with sales of 93,000, while Canadian sister duo Tegan & Sara notched No. 3 with their seventh studio album, “Heartthrob,” selling 49,000 copies.
R&B singer Charlie Wilson came in at No. 4 with his latest record, “Love, Charlie,” selling 44,000 copies in its first week.
Singer Beyonce saw a boost in sales following her widely praised performance at the Super Bowl in New Orleans on Sunday, which was watched by more than 108 million people.
For the week ending Sunday, February 2, digital sales of Beyonce’s songs “Halo,” “Crazy In Love” and “Single Ladies” saw the biggest bumps. There were 19,000 digital copies of “Halo” sold, a 338 percent increase from the previous week.
The new Destiny’s Child compilation album, “Love Songs,” didn’t see as big a bump, selling under 6,000 copies last week.
