Telethon raises $44 million for Hurricane Harvey, Irma relief
LOS ANGELES | A celebrity-packed telethon for the victims of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma raised some $44 million, organizers said on Wednesday, after more than 130 stars including George Clooney, Beyonce, Oprah Winfrey and Justin Bieber joined forces to sing, man the phones or appeal for donations.
The hour-long Hand in Hand telethon, which aired across broadcast, cable and digital platforms on Tuesday night, raised more than $14 million during the live broadcast.
Organizers on Wednesday said that the total rose to $44 million in pledges made after West Coast and other re-broadcasts.
Irma, one of the most powerful Atlantic Ocean storms on record, ravaged several islands in the northern Caribbean, killing at least 60 people. It barreled into the Florida Keys on Sunday, where 90 percent of homes are believed to be destroyed or heavily damaged.
Beyonce, appearing in a taped message, spoke of the urgent need for supplies in her hometown of Houston after Harvey became the most powerful hurricane to hit Texas in more than 50 years, killing more than 60 people, displacing more than 1 million and damaging some 203,000 homes.
During the show, Stephen Colbert said Apple Inc had donated $5 million, which the comedian quipped, “is also the price of the new iPhone.”
The telethon aired from New York, Nashville and Los Angeles, where Stevie Wonder kicked off the event singing “Lean On Me,” with a gospel choir as stars such as Tom Hanks, Barbra Streisand and Cher clapped along while sitting at their phone stations.

Justin Bieber cancels rest of world tour including Philippine Arena concert
Justin Bieber is not returning to the Philippines, after all.
A statement posted on his official website announced the cancellation of his ongoing “Purpose World Tour” citing “unforeseen circumstances.”
“Justin loves his fans and hates to disappoint them. He thanks his fans for the incredible experience of the Purpose World Tour over the last 18 months. He is grateful and honored to have shared that experience with his cast and crew for over 150 successful shows across 6 continents during this run. However, after careful consideration he has decided he will not be performing any further dates. Tickets will be refunded at point of purchase,” went the rest of the statement.
The said statement was re-posted on the social media pages of concert promoter MMI Live and its head, Rhiza Pascua. At the time of the tour’s cancellation, Bieber had 14 dates remaining covering cities in North America and Asia, including the Philippines where he was scheduled to perform at the Philippine Arena in Bocaue, Bulacan on September 30.
Given the large venue and its location outside Metro Manila, elaborate preparations had been made for the upcoming concert including ample parking for the 80-hectare space, the deployment of 1,000 traffic enforcers patrolling the grounds as well as the presence of Philippine National Police and local government units officers inside and outside the venue.
The Philippine Arena also offered 50 point-to-point (P2P) shuttle buses to transport concertgoers from and to Metro Manila as well as the availability of over 400 housing units for rent for those planning to have a “staycation” during the concert weekend.
As of posting time, Bieber had yet to personally explain the reason for the tour’s cancellation on his social media pages.

Justin Bieber impostor meted child sex charges in Australia
SYDNEY | A man posing online as pop superstar Justin Bieber was Thursday charged with more than 900 child sex offences in Australia after enticing young fans to send him explicit images, police said.
The 42-year-old used online platforms including Facebook and Skype to impersonate the chart-topping Canadian singer, with his alleged offenses dating back to 2007.
“Detectives had been investigating a man who allegedly posed as Justin online in order to solicit explicit images from young children,” Queensland state police said in a statement.
“As part of the investigation, a 42-year-old man had earlier been charged with a number of child sex offences including possessing child exploitation material and using a carriage service to groom persons under 16.
“After a thorough examination of the man’s computer, he has been further charged with another 931 child sex offences.”
The charges include rape, indecent treatment of children, making child exploitation material, using a carriage service to procure person under 16, and using a carriage service for child pornography material.
Bieber, who once enjoyed a squeaky clean image but has recently had frequent run-ins with the law, has a legendary army of fans dubbed “Beliebers”.
Detective Inspector Jon Rouse described the breadth of offences as “horrendous” and urged fans to be extra vigilant when using the internet.
“This investigation demonstrates both the vulnerability of children that are utilising social media and communication applications and the global reach and skill that child sex offenders have to groom and seduce victims,” he said.
“The fact that so many children could believe that they were communicating with this particular celebrity highlights the need for a serious rethink about the way that we as a society educate our children about online safety.”

Argentine court to try Justin Bieber for photographer assault
BUENOS AIRES | An Argentine court has ruled that pop star Justin Bieber must face trial for allegedly assaulting a photographer outside a nightclub in 2013, according to a decision published Thursday.
Judge Alberto Banos ordered Bieber to go on trial on charges of robbery, attempted robbery and assault with minor injuries, according to the decision.
The case dates to a stop in Buenos Aires on the Canadian heartthrob’s Believe tour.
According to the complaint, a bodyguard, following Bieber’s orders, forcefully seized photographer Diego Pesoa’s camera and cellphone outside a nightclub in the upscale Palermo neighborhood in November 2013.
Bieber has ignored court orders to appear before the judge, prompting Argentina to request an Interpol Red Notice for his arrest.
The plaintiff’s lawyer, Matias Morla, welcomed the ruling.
“The judge’s decision is excellent and represents a new slap in the face to Justin’s arrogance,” he said.
“Justin has hidden behind his fame and money to escape justice. Now he will have to observe the court ruling of a sovereign country like Argentina and show up to testify like any other citizen,” he told Argentine newspaper Diario Popular.
Bieber, 22, once enjoyed a squeaky clean image, but has recently had frequent run-ins with the law, including in the United States and Canada.

WATCH | ‘PPAP’ singer Pikotaro unveils extended version of viral song
Japanese social media star Pikotaro unveiled a new, extended version of his internet hit “Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen” (PPAP) on Friday.
The original video quickly went viral after being uploaded in early September, with Canadian singer Justin Bieber helping boost viewing numbers by labeling it his “favorite video on the internet” in a Twitter post on Thursday.
“Yesterday my head was full of white hair, but now it has all turned black,” said Pikotaro, overwhelmed by the attention he has received, including a Guinness World Record for the shortest song to make it into the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Pikotaro, whose real name is Kazuhito Kosaka, wore a gold animal print outfit complete with scarf and sunglasses as he performed the new two-minute version of what was a 45 second song to journalists in Tokyo.
The video — which has racked up over 131 million views on YouTube — features Pikotaro miming the joining of an imaginary apple and pineapple with an imaginary pen, lyrics he said were inspired by items he found on the table when he began writing.

Justin Bieber lets UK doctors and nurses beat him to top of Christmas charts
LONDON | A choir of doctors and nurses beat Justin Bieber to the Christmas number one spot in Britain’s pop music chart Friday after the heartthrob urged his fans to buy their song.
The Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Choir’s charity single, “A Bridge Over You”, outsold Bieber’s “Love Yourself” to snatch the coveted festive top spot.
That came after Bieber wrote on Twitter Wednesday: “So for 1 week it’s ok not to be #1. Let’s do the right thing & help them win. It’s Christmas. @Choir_NHS good luck”.
The southeast London-based choir is made up of staff who work for the state-funded National Health Service.
Their song is a mash-up of “Bridge Over Troubled Water” by Simon and Garfunkel and Coldplay’s “Fix You”.
Other songs in this week’s top ten which it has beaten include two other hits by Bieber plus Adele’s “Hello” and One Direction’s “History”.
Harriet Nerva, a junior doctor in the choir, decided to start a social media campaign to get the song to number one after a particularly tough day at work.
“A patient with cancer that I had been looking after for quite a number of weeks died,” she told the Guardian newspaper.
“I was listening to the song and it dawned on me that a great way of translating how I was feeling and how proud I was to work for the NHS would be getting (the song) to number one”.
Britain’s NHS is the fifth largest employer in the world, providing health care which is largely free at the point of delivery.
It is widely respected, with pollsters YouGov rating it the institution which most people view positively, and Prime Minister David Cameron’s attempts to reform the service are highly politically sensitive.

Justin Bieber storms UK charts to equal John Lennon’s 1981 feat
LONDON | Justin Bieber stormed the British singles charts on Friday with three singles from his new album in the top five, a feat no other artist has managed since John Lennon, posthumously, in 1981.
The Canadian singer’s singles “Sorry”, “Love Yourself” and “What Do You Mean?” took first, third and fifth place. “Sorry” pushed Adele’s “Hello” down to second place from the top spot it had occupied for three weeks.
Lennon’s “Imagine” was top, “Happy Xmas (War Is Over)” was third and “(Just Like) Starting Over” fifth in January 1981, the month after he was shot dead in New York.
Bieber’s songs all come from his album “Purpose” which sold 90,000 copies this week. Every track from it charted inside the top 100 singles.
But it was narrowly beaten to top position in the album chart by four-piece boy band One Direction’s “Made in the A.M.” which is now the fastest-selling album of 2015.
Notching up over 93,000 sales, this is the group’s fourth UK No. 1 having previously scored the top place in 2012 with “Take Me Home,” in 2013 with “Midnight Memories” and in 2014 with “Four”.
Both Bieber’s “Purpose” and One Direction’s “Made in the A.M.” broke the record for most-streamed album in the first week of release on online streaming platform Spotify.
“Purpose” set a new record with 205 million global streams while “Made in the A.M.” was streamed 106 million times, both outpacing the previous record holder, The Weeknd’s “Beauty Behind The Madness,” which garnered 90 million global streams in September.
The third most popular album was Elvis Presley’s “If I Can Dream,” produced nearly 40 years after his death. This collection of Elvis classics featuring orchestral reworkings by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra had been number one for two weeks running.
Jeff Lynne’s ELO was fourth with new entry “Alone In The Universe”. The group’s other album “All Over The World – The Very Best Of” re-entered at number 28.
Fifth place was taken by Little Mix’s “Get Weird”, slipping down from last week’s second place.

Argentine court summons Justin Bieber over alleged assault
BUENOS AIRES | An Argentine court has ordered pop star Justin Bieber to appear before it within two months to face questions about an alleged assault on a photographer at a Buenos Aires nightclub last year, state-run news agency Telam reported on Thursday.
The photographer, Diego Pesoa, accused Bieber and one of his bodyguards of lashing out at him when he tried to take a picture of the Canadian singer as he left the club in the capital’s trendy Palermo Hollywood neighborhood.
Telam said the magistrate, Facundo Cubas, had requested the assistance of Argentina’s Interpol branch to help locate Bieber, who has had a string or run-ins with the law in several countries.
Bieber should be detained if he failed to appear or failed to explain why he was unable to present himself before the court, Telam cited Cubas as saying.
“Bieber has to come to Argentina, and it won’t be to sing,” Pesoa’s lawyer, Matias Morla, told local TV channel C5N.
There was no immediate reaction from Bieber’s representatives to the report.

Norwegian jailed in US over Bieber scam
LOS ANGELES - A Norwegian man who admitted tricking an investor out of $1 million in a fake deal to promote Justin Bieber in Scandinavia was sentenced to 11 years in jail, US prosecutors said Monday.
Wahleed Ahmed was also ordered to repay the $1 million, said the US Attorney's office in Los Angeles and the FBI.
Ahmed presented himself as a successful entrepreneur from Norway who had invented solar-powered phone covers, and he promised the victim would make $9 million in profit in three months.
The 22-year-old used photos of famous dignitaries including the Crown Prince of Norway, Queen Rania of Jordan, and others, and claimed to have multimillion dollar contracts with large telecoms firms, to lend credibility to his scheme.
In August 2012, Ahmed convinced the victim to invest $1 million to secure concert venues for the Justin Bieber Tour, using fake documents and websites he had bought with domain names suggesting they were part of the scheme.
He was charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and and pleaded guilty in March 2013, admitting he had "taken the victim investor's money knowing that there was no contract for Justin Bieber tours and that the victim would lose his money."
As well as serving 132 months in jail, he was ordered to make an immediate restitution payment of $1,001,505.50. Judge Philip S. Gutierrez ordered the prison term to be followed by three years of supervised release.

Justin Bieber arrested for drag-racing while intoxicated - reports
MIAMI - Justin Bieber was arrested in Miami early Thursday for drag racing while intoxicated, news reports here said, in the pop singer's latest in a series of run-ins with the law.
The local NBC television affiliate in Miami reported that at the time of his arrest, Bieber was driving a rented Lamborghini.
The incident is one in a long line of controversial headlines which have tarnished the once clean-cut image of Bieber, who has sold more than 12 million albums since emerging on the music scene in 2009 as a schoolboy sensation.
Just last week, police searched Bieber's Los Angeles mansion over an egg-throwing attack seized illegal drugs and arrested one of the singer's associates.
The 19-year-old Canadian teen idol was accused by a neighbor of causing thousands of dollars in damage to a neighbor's house after pelting it with eggs.
News reports said that in July, authorities at the US-Canada border confiscated marijuana and drug paraphernalia from one of Bieber's tour buses. He was not on board at the time, media reported.
He also attracted criticism on a recent tour of Australia after allegedly spraying graffiti on a hotel wall.
A tour of South America last year also ran into turbulence, with allegations that he tagged the wall of a Rio de Janeiro hotel and failed to pay a bill in a Buenos Aires nightclub.
Bieber also caused offense by stepping on an Argentine flag thrown onto a stage during a concert. He was also evicted from a luxury hotel in Buenos Aires after a room was damaged.
Over the Christmas holidays, Bieber announced via Twitter that he was "officially retiring."

Justin Bieber flirts with retirement in Christmas Eve tweets
NEW YORK | Teenage pop star Justin Bieber sent out a series of mixed messages over his Twitter feed on Tuesday night, one of which said he was retiring, on the eve of the Christmas Day release of the latest film chronicling the life of the Canadian singer.
The tweet to the 19-year-old’s nearly 48 million followers – “My beloved beliebers I’m officially retiring” – was quickly followed by another message: “I’m never leaving you, being a belieber is a lifestyle.”
And then: “IM HERE FOREVER.”
Representatives for Bieber did not immediately respond to a request for clarification.
The Canadian singer has been involved in a series of headline-grabbing incidents over the past year.
In March, the singer scuffled with a photographer outside a London hotel during a European tour. Later that month, police were called to his Los Angeles area home after a neighbor claimed he had been threatened and struck by Bieber.
In June, Bieber struck a photographer with his Ferrari sports car while driving away from a comedy club in Los Angeles, though police said the accident was not considered a hit-and-run.
The movie, “Justin Bieber’s Believe,” which takes the name of Bieber’s third studio album, could help repair his image after the difficult year.
“I think people forget that it’s a 19-year-old kid, trying to figure it out,” Bieber’s manager, Scooter Braun, told ABC News, adding the film shows Bieber as “a human.”
At one point in the film, director Jon Chu suggests Bieber’s life could become a “train wreck.”
The “retirement” message went out on the night of Christmas Eve and by the following morning had nearly a quarter million retweets and over 185,000 favorites.
Twitter user @theycallmejerry tweeted: “A life without Justin Bieber. A life without my idol, hero, inspiration, my everything. Not the best thing to think about on Christmas Eve.”
On the other end of the spectrum, Twitter user CozImAGuy said, “Justin Bieber retiring is the greatest Christmas gift EVER.”

Rio police probe Justin Bieber over wall tagging
RIO DE JANEIRO - Canadian teen idol Justin Bieber, currently on a Brazil concert tour, is under police investigation in Rio for alleged unauthorized wall tagging.
A police statement sent to AFP Wednesday said a probe had been launched to determine whether the 19-year-old pop star had received permission from City Hall to tag the wall of a disused hotel in Rio's tourist southern zone as claimed by his entourage.
Late Tuesday, protected by his security detail, Bieber tagged "Respect privacy" and "I am off" as well as several drawings on the hotel wall while nearby Brazilian police officers did not stop him.
The daily O Dia reported that Bieber's bodyguards threatened paparazzi who photographed the scene and that one of their cars was hit by a stone.
Since his arrival Friday after a stop in Sao Paulo, Bieber, who gave a concert here Sunday, has grabbed media attention with a series of peccadilloes.
He was photographed emerging under a blanket from a notorious Rio brothel and later vainly tried to bring prostitutes into the posh Copacabana Palace.
Furious that he was not able to do so, the teen sensation reportedly went on a rampage in his suite, breaking various objects valued at nearly $6,000 in total.
Bieber and his entourage were subsequently kicked out of the hotel, local press reports said.
Bieber, who is on the Brazilian leg of his world tour to promote his Believe album, was due to leave Rio for Paraguay late Wednesday.

Justin Bieber fan jumps on stage during Dubai concert, toppling piano
DUBAI--A fan jumped on stage at a Justin Bieber concert in Dubai, sparking a scramble as guards tackled the youth and toppled a piano over in the process, video footage showed on Monday.
The YouTube video shows a boy dressed in shorts and white shirt running across the stage and approaching the Canadian pop star as he performed on the piano.
A security guard quickly pounced, flung him away from Bieber and knocked the piano partly off stage, as thousands of screaming fans looked on.
The footage shows the boy then being whisked away by two guards and Bieber skipping away to safety on a side of the stage as the music continues to play.
"A young fan desperate to meet his idol did make his way on stage, but was immediately removed and Justin professionally continued with his show," said the concert's organisers.
"As far as we know, no further action has been taken against the youth."
The 19-year-old singer was performing for the second night in front of thousands of fans at a stadium in Dubai.
Bieber had arrived nearly two hours late for the concert, angering young fans who arrived in Dubai from across the region to see him perform live.

Justin Bieber lashes out at media’s ‘countless lies’ about him
LOS ANGELES – Pop star Justin Bieber struck back at his critics on Thursday, denouncing the “countless lies” written about him after a week in which he canceled a concert, collapsed on stage and had a run-in with paparazzi.
In a lengthy posting on his Instagram profile, the 19-year-old singer said he was not going into rehab, contrary to some media speculation, and felt he had done nothing to deserve the negative press surrounding his European tour.
“Everyone in my team has been telling me, ‘keep the press happy’ but I’m tired of all the countless lies in the press right now. Saying I’m going to rehab and how my family is disappointed in me,” Bieber wrote.
Saying he wanted to let his fans know directly how he felt, Bieber added: “I’m a good person with a big heart. And don’t think I deserve all this negative press I’ve worked my ass off to get where I am and my hard work doesn’t stop here … All this isn’t easy. I get angry sometimes. I’m human. I’m gonna make mistakes. I’m gonna grow and get better from them.”
The clean-cut Canadian teenager has had a meteoric career since being discovered on YouTube in 2008.
But he hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons last week when he turned up two hours late for a London concert, collapsed on stage in London with shortness of breath on another night, and was caught on camera cursing at a pushy photographer.
He was spotted wearing a bizarre gas mask on a night out in London, and one British tabloid labeled him “Pop brat Justin.”
On Monday, he canceled one of two planned concerts in Portugal this week. A statement cited “unforeseen circumstances,” but local media in Portugal reported that ticket sales for the gigs had been slow.
Bieber, who has more than 35 million Twitter followers, suggested on Thursday that envy of his success might lie at the root of the jibes from the news media.
“I’m 19 with 5 number one albums, 19 and I’ve seen the whole world. 19 and I’ve accomplished more than I could’ve ever dreamed of, I’m 19 and it must be scary to some people to think that this is just the beginning,” he wrote.
Bieber played a concert, apparently without incident, in Madrid on Thursday before moving on to Barcelona and other European cities later this month.

Singer Justin Bieber collapses during London performance
LONDON – Canadian teen pop star Justin Bieber collapsed on stage from shortness of breath during a performance in London on Thursday, representatives for the singer said.
“(Justin’s) heading to the doctor now,” Bieber’s spokeswoman Melissa Victor told Reuters at midnight local time. “He fainted and took a 20-minute reprieve and was given oxygen.”
Bieber, 19, returned to the stage after the break to finish the show, and his representatives said he was OK.
“Justin got very light of breath, the whole show he has been complaining,” Bieber’s manager, Scooter Braun, told the crowd in several amateur videos posted on the Internet. “He’s backstage with the EMTs and the doctor.”
Bieber’s spokeswoman told Reuters that the “Boyfriend” singer ignored doctors’ orders and returned to the O2 Arena stage to finish the performance.
The Canadian singer had not been suffering from any health issues prior to the show, the spokeswoman added.
Fans had already started circulating the hashtag “#justintakeabreak” on Twitter after news of his collapse spread on the social network.
Bieber was performing for the third out of four nights at London’s O2 Arena as part of the European leg of his sold-out “Believe” world tour.
In September 2012, the singer vomited during a concert in Glendale, California. He was performing his song “Out of Town Girl” when he suddenly turned his back and threw up. He immediately ran towards backstage afterwards.
He vomited again during a subsequent song but managed to do it off stage. The second incident stalled the concert for a few minutes, but he returned to the stage, performed a ballad on an acoustic guitar, and finished the show.
In a message on Twitter after the concert, Bieber blamed the incident on having consumed milk despite knowing he was lactose intolerant.

Justin Bieber becomes youngest artist with five No. 1 albums
LOS ANGELES – Canadian pop star Justin Bieber became the youngest artist to land five chart-topping albums in the United States on Wednesday when his latest record, “Believe Acoustic,” debuted atop the Billboard 200 album chart.
“Believe Acoustic,” which features stripped down versions of Bieber’s songs from his fourth No. 1 album, “Believe,” released last June, as well as three new songs, sold 211,000 copies in its first week according to figures from Nielsen SoundScan.
The album also topped iTunes downloads charts in 63 countries, and became a hot topic on social media platforms as the singer’s 34 million-strong followers on Twitter raced to purchase the record as soon as it was released.
Bieber was previously tied with former Disney star Miley Cyrus with four chart-topping albums before turning 19, and he is only one of nine artists in Billboard history to have a No. 1 album for four consecutive years.
Bieber’s 19th birthday is March 1.
The singer, who failed to pick up a Grammy nomination this year despite having a top-selling album and sold-out world tour in 2012, will be hosting and performing on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” this week, the night before the Grammy awards.
Four new albums debuted in the top five of the Billboard 200 chart this week, led by “Believe Acoustic.”
Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli’s 14th studio album, “Passione,” landed at No. 2 with sales of 93,000, while Canadian sister duo Tegan & Sara notched No. 3 with their seventh studio album, “Heartthrob,” selling 49,000 copies.
R&B singer Charlie Wilson came in at No. 4 with his latest record, “Love, Charlie,” selling 44,000 copies in its first week.
Singer Beyonce saw a boost in sales following her widely praised performance at the Super Bowl in New Orleans on Sunday, which was watched by more than 108 million people.
For the week ending Sunday, February 2, digital sales of Beyonce’s songs “Halo,” “Crazy In Love” and “Single Ladies” saw the biggest bumps. There were 19,000 digital copies of “Halo” sold, a 338 percent increase from the previous week.
The new Destiny’s Child compilation album, “Love Songs,” didn’t see as big a bump, selling under 6,000 copies last week.

‘Prankster’ Justin Bieber Drops Trou, Posts Moon Shot to Instagram (NSFW)
Justin Bieber managed to rack up nearly 100,000 likes on Instagram after uploading a photo of his butt crack this past Saturday.
The moon shot wasn't up for long, but still long enough to necessitate a comment from Bieber's manager Scooter Braun.
"[A]s a prankster u have to respect another good prank. only makes sense. #crackdealer," Braun tweeted following his client's ass-play.
USA Today, however, suggests the cheeky candid was less of a "good prank," and more of a "regular PR move" to attract new followers ahead of Bieber's upcoming remix album, Believe Acoustic.
Then again, he may have been helping his mom promote her upcoming anti-abortion film by showing horny youngsters God's loophole.

US police foil plot to kill, castrate Justin Bieber
WASHINGTON – US police have foiled a plot to kill teen pop idol Justin Bieber and possibly castrate him with pruning shears, with the alleged killer promised $2,500 per testicle, legal documents revealed Thursday.
Mark Staake, 41, and his nephew, Tanner Ruane, were arrested in Vermont and New York last month and face charges in New Mexico of conspiracy to commit murder and conspiracy to commit aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.
The pair were allegedly plotting to strangle two victims and castrate them with pruning shears, but a convicted killer who is serving life in prison told police that the “ultimate” target was Bieber, who was performing in New York.
“Through follow-up investigation it was discovered that Justin Bieber may have also been a target of the murder plot,” said a statement by New Mexico’s Department of Public Safety.
An affidavit detailed the grisly plot, including the brand of pruning shears and how the testicles would be transported after the planned murders of two male victims in the northeastern state of Vermont.
Staake and Ruane arrived in Vermont by car on November 19 planning to kill their victims — identified only as P.L. and M.S., and referred to as “dogs” — by strangling them with a necktie, the affidavit said.
Dana Martin, who was jailed for life for a 2000 murder in Vermont and who had met Staake in jail in New Mexico, allegedly recruited Staake to carry out the murders. Staake then asked his nephew to help.
In a telephone call Martin — who is allegedly infatuated with Bieber — asked Staake what he was going to use to castrate the victims.
“Mr Ruane stated that he had brought a pair of hand(held) hedge clippers,” adding that he expected to be paid “five large” — $2,500 — for each testicle he got, said the affidavit, which said the shears were made by Durasharp.
“Mr Martin asked if they had bags to put the testicles in, and Mr Ruane stated that he had something. Mr Martin suggested hiding them somewhere, such as the engine compartment… to avoid detection should they get pulled over.”
Martin, who had a tattoo of Bieber on his leg and had tried to contact the singer repeatedly without success, subsequently told police that P.L. and M.S. “were not the ultimate targets in the plot.
“Mr Martin indicated that their ultimate target was J.B.,” said the affidavit, adding that, when police searched the car they found a pair of Fiskar Durasharp pruning shears and information on their intended victims.
Staake and Ruane are currently awaiting extradition to New Mexico, officials said.
The 18-year-old Canadian star’s managers said they took Bieber’s safety seriously. “We take every precaution to protect and ensure the safety of Justin and his fans,” a management official told AFP in an email.

Justin Bieber mocks Manny Pacquiao on Instagram, draws ire of boxer’s fans
Justin Bieber mocked Manny Pacquiao in a series of posts on Instagram on Sunday, triggering a tidal wave of verbal abuse from fans of the Filipino boxing superstar.
The Canadian singer — an associate of brash American boxing champion Floyd Mayweather – posted three pictures on his Instagram account that made fun of Pacquiao’s knockout defeat to Juan Manuel Marquez in their fourth fight held in Las Vegas on Saturday.
The first photo shows the knockdown Mayweather scored against Marquez during their 2009 fight in which Mayweather scored a dominant decision victory.
The photo bore the hashtag “No Competition”, implying that Mayweather is clearly superior to Pacquiao based on their respective performances against Marquez.
The second photo has Pacquiao’s prone knocked-out figure grafted diagonally into a photo of Michael Jackson and two backup dancers performing a grafity-defying dance move. It was captioned “ ”pacquiao doing the lean with MJ… Classic moment”.
The third photo shows the Disney character Simba as a baby lion looking over Pacquiao as the fighter lies unconscious on the canvas. The caption reads: “Dad wake up”.
The posts unleashed a torrent of protests from Pacquiao fans, who called him racist, among other expletives.
The posts can be viewed as retribution for the abuse Pacquiao followers heaped on the singer in May after he joined Mayweather’s entourage in the latter’s fight against Miguel Cotto.

Daily clues will be posted on Neo’s Facebook site leading searchers to find the Neo gold sneaker images hidden in a different site on the Internet each week. By solving the clues and finding the picture, a code will be available for successful sleuths to submit to Neo’s Facebook site.
One entrant each week over five weeks will win a pair of the Neo gold sneakers and an all-inclusive trip to meet Justin on tour in Miami. Entrants will also have the chance to win daily prizes of Neo goodies.
Hermann Deininger, chief marketing officer Adidas brand, said Bieber possesses an undeniable young, fun spirit and energy that embodies the Adidas Neo Label.
Adidas Neo is available in selected SM Department Stores, Robinsons Department Stores, Toby’s, Planet Sports and other sports stores nationwide.
