Tinder users get 'apocalyptic' reality show on date experience
SAN FRANCISCO, United States — If dating were not scary enough already, users of the Tinder app will now be able to simulate the experience with an interactive reality show where they choose partners for a character just before the end of the world.
Tinder's "Swipe Night" is set to debut in the US on October 6, the dating app said, describing it as an "apocalyptic adventure" that will let members play leading roles and make quick moral choices as a group of friends face the end of the world.
The app dating service, known for its "swipe" feature on the profiles of prospective partners, said it hopes the interactive show will help users who face their own thorny decisions on finding a mate in an uncertain world.
"Let's face it, if we knew the world was ending, we wouldn't want to go it alone," Tinder said in a blog post Friday announcing the new feature.
"We can't think of a better way to break the ice than over emojis and the apocalypse."
"Swipe Night" is described as "a first-person, apocalyptic adventure where at key turning points" Tinder members decide what happens next.
The show follows a group of friends played by actors Angela Wong Carbone, Jordan Christian Hearn and Shea Gabor and asks users to guide them through "moral dilemmas and practical choices."
A new episode of "Swipe Night" will air each Sunday in October, streaming live inside the app.
"Seven years ago, Tinder revolutionized the way we meet with the invention of its swipe feature," said chief executive Elie Seidman. "Now, with Swipe Night, we’re proud to be pushing the envelope again."
Tinder users interacting with the production will make moral and practical decisions regarding characters, influencing the storyline and feeding choices into dating profiles at the service, the company said.
The new feature is the first venture into original media for Tinder, which has gained a reputation for casual "hook-ups" rather than lasting relationships.
The interactive feature has also been used by Netflix which recently released a Black Mirror episode called "Bandersnatch" that lets viewers make choices that influence the story.
Tinder said it is playing to its predominately "Gen Z" user-based with its interactive show, defining the demographic as people between the ages of 18 and 25.
"We know Gen Z speaks in content, so we intentionally built an experience that is native to how they interact," said Tinder chief product officer Ravi Mehta.

Most men wish women would help pay date tab - US study
NEW YORK CITY - Two out of three men think women should help pay for a date, although most feel guilty about accepting their money, a US study out Saturday suggests.
Of the 64 percent wanting to split the bill, 44 percent said they'd even ditch a love interest who never doled out any dollars.
That said, 76 percent of men felt bad about pocketing payments from possible partners.
The findings are based on research led by psychologist David Frederick of Chapman University in California.
He oversaw a team that combed through data from more than 17,000 people to see how changing gender norms have impacted on time-honored notions of courtship.
Eighty-four percent of men, and 58 percent of women, reported that men pay for most dating expenses, even after they've been going steady for a while.
Fifty-seven percent of women claimed they had offered to pay for a date -- although 39 percent confessed they hoped the man would reject their offer to chip in.
In any event, over time, the vast majority of participants, both male and female, said they shared dating expenses in the first six months of seeing someone exclusively.
Frederick, whose previous research has focused on body image, said the study was motivated by a desire "to understand why some gendered practices are more resistant to change than others."
It was presented at the annual meeting of the American Sociological Association that opened in New York Saturday and runs through Tuesday.

Taylor Swift and One Direction's Harry Styles: Are They Dating?
Taylor Swift appears to be taking her love life in a new direction.
The "Never Ever Getting Back Together" singer is seemingly taking her lyrics to heart as she moves on from recent ex, Conor Kennedy, and enjoys the company of One Direction hottie Harry Styles.
"I had to literally do a double-take," an onlooker tells PEOPLE of finding Styles, 18, with Swift, 22, on the set of The X Factor Thursday morning.
Styles was on hand to watch Swift rehearse the debut of "State of Grace," which she performed later that night on the Fox reality show.
"He was smiling at her while she rehearsed. When she was done he jumped up on stage, picked her up, put her over his shoulder and carried her off stage," the onlooker says. "The whole crew was really surprised."
The young singers were also spotted by X Factor host Mario Lopez, who says he was slapped on the back by Styles during Swift's rehearsal.
"I said, 'What are you doing here,' " Lopez said on his 104.3 MY FM radio show Friday. "And he sort of [pointed] toward Taylor."
Lopez went on to say he later saw the two "hand-in-hand."
A telling sign of the budding relationship may have been a look Styles shared with his bandmate Niall Horan a week earlier after Horan told PEOPLE his favorite song of 2012 was Swift's "Never Ever Getting Back Together."
When asked if he would ever date Swift, Horan gave a small laugh, looked at Styles and answered with a succinct, "no."

Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis Attend Dodgers Game With Her Parents

Well, this seems like a solid indication that Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis are getting serious.
The "friendly" duo—who have been rumored to be dating since April—attended the Dodgers game together last night in Los Angeles for a very special double date...with Mila's parents!
Mila, 28, and Ashton, 34, donned blue and white Dodger's gear for the event and sat in the exclusive Lexus Dugout Club with Mr. and Mrs. Kunis in tow. The good-looking twosome was all smiles munching on food, cheering on the team and enjoying each other's company and even appear to be holding hands in a video from the event.
Earlier this month, the former That '70s Show costars were snapped holding hands as they boarded a plane in Bali although they continue to stay mum on the official status of their relationship.
The Russian beauty even claimed that she's "totally single" in British Elle's August issue and continues to reiterate the fact that she and Ashton are "just friends:"
"Listen, [Ashton and I] hang out. We've known each other for 15 years. We have mutual friends. We're comfortable with one another. That's it! There's no crazy love story, nothing more."
Perhaps very special friend might be more appropriate

Enchong On Julia And His Non-Showbiz Girlfriends

MANILA, Philippines – Seemingly taking Radiohead's "True Love Waits" to heart is actor Enchong Dee, who has vowed to hold off his pursuit of Julia Montes till at least the actress turn 18.
Not that he has to wait for ages as Montes will be having her debut by March next year.
Still, Dee is already demonstrating utmost fervency in the quest declaring that this early, he had already forgone dating other women.
“’Wala na. It’s a choice din na ‘wag na,” Dee said during a recent appearance on "KrisTV."
As of the moment, Dee is keeping himself busy with work. He is currently promoting Star Cinema's “The Reunion,” which will hit
theaters next week. He is also preparing for his role in ABS-CBN’s upcoming drama series “Ina, Kapatid, Anak” alongside Xian Lim, Kim Chiu and Maja Salvador.
In the interview, Dee revealed that he only has had two romantic relationships so far. He insisted that the past rumors linking him to Kim Chiu and Erich Gonzales are just that, rumors.
Dee, who used to compete nationally as swimmer, said his first girlfriend was a Cebuana, whom he met in a training camp years ago.
“Kasi ‘pag swimming, ‘pag summer, ‘yun ‘yung pinaka-height ng training, merong ibang mga taga-probinsiya na nagpupunta sa amin. So may Cebuana na nagpunta sa amin, nakipag-training, tapos doon ko siya nakilala,” he said.
Romance eventually blossomed, Dee recalled, as the training progressed.
“Ang pupuntahan nung training na ‘yun, competition sa Bacolod. So ang galing, Bicolano ako, Cebuana siya, ta’s sa Bacolod nabuo [‘yung relasyon],” he said.
The relationship did not last long, however, as distance drove them apart. "Kasi long distance. Tsaka bata pa rin naman kami noon,” he said.
The actor said that he has maintained his friendship with the girl even as he became busy with his showbiz career.
“Nagkita kami one time kasi nagkaroon ako ng show sa Cebu, tapos nag-breakfast [kami]. Effort talaga, gising ka nang maaga para makita mo siya, makita mo ‘yung family niya. Pero ‘yun lang, friends na lang,” Dee said.
Dee's next relationship was with a girl he met while he was finishing his studies in De La Salle University-Manila. But just like his first, this one didn’t work out as according to Dee, "hindi ganu'n ‘yung bonding, unlike others.”

Ruffa: Love Can Be 'Toxic'

MANILA, Philippines – Actress- TV host Ruffa Gutierrez is on a “dating detox.”
Apparently, Gutierrez feels as if going out and meeting someone new and—maybe—falling in love, is quite a toxic matter.
And she just might be basing this on experience, getting herself mired in a storm for dating hot matinee idol John Lloyd Cruz sometime ago and all.
Doubtless, there had been other lesser known—but, obviously, not very successful—relationships as well, which she herself admitted in a recent interview with GMA News.
"I've been in one relationship after the other, so I think it's also a good experience kung pa-paano mai-rest ang ating puso. Kasi it's been one crazy cycle after another," Gutierrez said.
"I plan to have a love sabbatical," she added. "I have to keep my focus.”
Gutierrez said that her decision had also been influenced by stories she kept hearing from her acquaintances.
"Lahat ng mga nakakausap kong friends ko, all the time they're always crying, they're always sad. May mga problema sila sa mga husband nila, sa mga boyfriend nila," said she. "[So] I'm so happy na wala akong pino-problema kundi ang sarili ko at mga anak ko."
If anything, Gutierrez would rather concentrate in being a good mom to her children, Lorin and Venice.
"A lot of my decisions really have to do with them—why I will do a certain thing or why I will not do a certain thing, it's really because of Lorin and Venice," she emphasized.
In the same interview, Gutierrez shared that she and estranged husband Yilmaz Bektas are in “good terms.”
She even went on to admit that she—but most especially her kids—misses his company.
"Nakaka-miss din naman siya, [as with] 'yung bonding na nakikita ko between Lorin and Venice and their father," sabi ni Ruffa.
But it’s not as if she wants to get back with him.
"Wala na. He'll just forever remain my one true love and the father of my kids," she maintained.
Asked if she regrets having married him in the first place, Gutierrez answered in the negative.
But she admitted, "Siguro si Yilmaz masasabi kong siya 'yung true love ko, pero hindi siya 'yung forever love ko."
