Tagalog-speaking American boy becomes talk of Twittertown

His song and dance performances on the noontime variety show Eat Bulaga have been the talk of the Internet.
On Twitter, Gabby Abshire, “The Tagalog-speaking American Boy," became a hot topic after appearing on "Eat Bulaga" last Saturday.

Gabby had three performances:

“Teach me how to Dougie” by Cali Swag District: With host Allan K, Abshire rapped in Tagalog, “Turuan mo ko ni’yan, turo-turuan mo ko n’yan;”

“Mitulo Na,” a Visayan novelty song by Max Surban: Abshire sang this with "Eat Bulaga" host ‘Bossing’ Vic Sotto, and

“Laklak” originally by Filipino rock band Teeth: Abshire performed this with "Dabarkads" Aiza Seguerra, Allan K and Keempee De Leon.

In an interview with ’24-Oras’ segment Chika Minute’s Pia Guanio, Gabby said, “First time ko makakanta sa stage at masaya [ako], at si bossing [Sotto] pa ang kasama ko, masaya talaga po.”

When asked if he would join the showbiz scene, he replied, “Ayoko mag showbiz gusto ko lang sa Eat Bulaga. Gusto ko lang dito. Pero aalis po kami, yung visa ko po mamamatay” (about to expire).

In an interview with Guanio, Jaxx Abshire, Gabby's father, said, “He’s definitely Pinoy, he thinks Pinoy, eats Pinoy. He has not lived in the Philippines [though].”

Gabby’s Filipino mother, Jing Abshire, on the other hand, said she taught her son to be respectful and courteous.

“Tsaka yung po at opo talagang tinuro ko sa kanya,” said Jing.

Sick family member

Meanwhile, despite his cheerfulness, the 10-year-old is currently undergoing a stressful moment in his young life.

“My lolo po, he’s sick. He had a stroke,” said Gabby.

Gabby tweeted last week that he was selling their laptop to buy plane tickets to go to "Eat Bulaga" because all their savings have been spent on medication for his grandfather.

“Nagka-stroke po si lolo naubos po and pera ni tatay po sa gamot kaya po bebenta naming laptop for airline ticket po,” Gabby said in his tweet dated May 16, 2012.

Gabby explained that his grandparents were the ones who always watch and root for him when he entertains people in Eat Bulaga.

“Sila [ang] lagi nanunuod sa akin. Sila talaga ang pinaka unang ano [fans] ko. Sila ang masaya panuodin ako. Gusto ko ng ganoon,” he said. - VVP/HS, GMA News
