Xian takes criticisms on pageant hosting stint in stride

MANILA, Philippines – Where his hosting skills are concerned, actor Xian Lim knows that he still needs to work on it.

Apparently, this issue came to light after a number of people attacked his hosting style on the “Binibining Pilipinas 2012 Grand Coronation Night” on Sunday. On Twitter, people had pointed out his “failure” to read the Spain ambassador to the Philippines Jorge Domecq’s honorific, “H.E.” (His Excellency) correctly or even addressing the ambassador as such, his constant reading off his cue cards, and frequent use of “very well” especially during the question and answer portion.

In a report on push.com.ph posted April 18, Xian admitted there’s room for him to improve, especially since it was his first big hosting stint. Seeming to take it lightly, he was also quoted to have said, “Sige, hayaan mo, sasabihin ko sa kanila, next time hindi ko na babasahin.”

The actor’s skills were further put to the test when, during the Q&A, a contestant misunderstood the question her judge asked. According to Xian, his instinct was to ask the judge to repeat the question, “But I wasn’t sure if that was okay because that’s a competition. There are rules kung ano pwede ko gawin.”

Xian insisted that he and co-hosts Iza Calzado, Venus Raj and Georgina Wilson were briefed prior, but he knew he had to be careful. In the end, the show’s director Johnny Manahan instructed him to tell the judge to repeat his question.

In related news, Xian’s leading lady and good friend Kim Chiu has defended him from accusations that he’s only using the latter to boost his popularity.

“Unfair naman ‘yong word na gamitan. Wala naman akong ginawa sa kanya. Wala naman siyang ginawa sa akin. Nagtatrabaho lang naman kami,” Kim was quoted as saying in a separate PEP report posted also on Wednesday.

The actress believes that Xian deserves the success he has attained, saying, “Wala naman akong say doon kasi talented naman ‘yong tao, e.”
