Pinoys on Twitter celebrate Independence Day with microfiction

For many Filipinos, Independence Day is an opportunity to reflect on the country's history. For most, it's a welcome break from school and work. But for some Pinoy writers on Twitter, June 12 is an occasion to come together and create alternative history.
Now on its fourth year, Rocket Kapre's annual project "RP612Fic" celebrates Independence Day by telling stories, bayanihan style.
By contributing microfiction accounts of Philippine history, Pinoy authors pitch in to create RP612Fic, a collection of tweet-length stories.
Using the hashtag #RP612fic, tweet-length stories will be gathered from 6 p.m. of June 11 to 6 a.m. of June 13.
Ideally, the stories should tell an alternative history, but there are no strict rules.
"For Independence Day, I’d love to see alternative history stories, but it’s not like I’m going to tell you to delete your 130 character realist micro fiction opus," writes Rocket Kapre editor Paolo Chikiamco on the digital publishing site.
After the event, all the submissions will be collated into a single post on the Rocket Kapre website. Previous RP612fic stories are also found on the website.
This year's participants include a variety of styles, with some authors referencing current events, like the election, and others including characters from popular television shows like Game of Thrones.

Kapuso stars to join 114th PHL Independence Day Parade in New York June 3

Three of the hottest and biggest GMA stars – multi-awarded TV personality Dingdong Dantes, ultimate singing champion Rachelle Ann Go, and Kapuso hunk Aljur Abrenica – are set to banner the 114th Philippine Independence Day Parade in New York on June 3.

Supported by GMA’s international channels GMA Pinoy TV and GMA Life TV, this year’s event is expected to have a bigger turnout than last year’s 100,000 crowd estimate.

Joseph Francia, Vice President and Head of Operations for GMA International, said: “The New York Independence Day Parade is one of the most anticipated Filipino-American community events in the East Coast."

"We are again pleased to celebrate with our kababayans this year in this important gathering. This is going to be another exciting celebration for everyone as they are joined by some of our biggest Kapuso stars in Manhattan for a day of festivities,” he said.

Also expected to grace the event are Philippine Ambassador to the U.S. Jose Cuisa Jr., Consul General Mario de Leon, Jr., Deputy Consul General Tess Dizon de Vega, and representatives from the Philippine Consulate, Philippine Center Management Board, Philippine Trade and Investments, Department of Tourism, and the Philippine Mission to the United Nations.

The other personalities joining the parade include Anna Maria Perez de Tagle from Broadway’s Godspell, Ryan Cayabyab, Broadway Barkada, and the Mga Anak ni Inang Daigdig dance troupe.

Hosted by WPIX morning news anchor Frances Rivera, standup comic Air Tabigue, and Broadway singer Liz Casasola, this year’s celebration will also feature a trade fair, a cultural program, and a flea market of Philippine crafts and foods.
