Softer Miley Cyrus performs at Billboard Awards

LAS VEGAS — Miley Cyrus introduced a new version of her persona, the low-key, in love Miley, when she performed her new song "Malibu," at the 2017 Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas on Sunday.

The new Miley is a far cry from the previous Disney child star who shocked consistently audiences for years with her twerking and singing nude atop a giant wrecking ball.

Her sister Noah Cyrus noted in the intro that her sister, who is engaged to Liam Hemsworth, was "the happiest she had ever been." The singer didn't dance, but performed the acoustic driven slow-burning song in front of giant images of the beach and ocean and ended the song with teary eyes.

The Chainsmokers, a leading nominee, picked up the first televised award of the night with Halsey for top collaboration for their song "Closer." Drake led the winners with 12 awards. He has 22 nominations.

Nicki Minaj opened the Billboard Music Awards on Sunday at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas with an explosive nine-minute set of her top songs — including "No Frauds" a response to a diss track from Remy Ma.

At various points, she was joined by Lil Wayne, DJ David Guetta and Jason Derulo.

Vanessa Hudgens, hosting the show on ABC with Ludacris, imitated Minaj's rap onstage and earned applause from the crowd. Hudgens also sang some of Celine Dion's "I'm Your Lady" (Dion will perform later in the show).

Drake and Beyonce were among the early winners. Drake had earned 10 awards in early winners announced Sunday morning and picked up an 11th for top male artist in the first minutes of the show. Beyonce earned five in the early winners.

Drake and the Chainsmokers are top contenders with 22 nominations each.

Drake will walk into the 2017 Billboard Music Awards already a winner: He earned 10 early awards.

The rapper and the electronic dance duo the Chainsmokers were top contenders with 22 nominations each.

The early winners announced Sunday morning by dick clark productions included Beyonce, who won five and twenty one pilots, who won four. The Chainsmokers picked up three honors in the early announcement.

The Billboard Awards will be held Sunday night at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, where more awards will be announced.

Cher, Miley Cyrus, Bruno Mars, Ed Sheeran, Drake and the Chainsmokers will perform at the show airing live on ABC. Imagine Dragons will speak about Chris Cornell's influence on the band ahead of their performance.

Ludacris and Vanessa Hudgens will host the show.

Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus, Madonna, Katy Perry lead celebs mourning Clinton loss

Lady Gaga called for kindness, Miley Cyrus was in tears, Madonna vowed never to give up and Katy Perry urged Americans not to weep as Republican Donald Trump stunned the world by defeating heavily favored Democrat Hillary Clinton in Tuesday’s U.S. presidential election.

Celebrities, many of whom had campaigned for Clinton, were shocked as Trump was elected after a long and bitter campaign.

A tearful Cyrus posted a video on social media on Wednesday saying she had not slept because of Clinton’s loss. But the “Wrecking Ball” singer, 23, who had said earlier this year she would leave the country if Trump won, urged unity, saying “Donald Trump, I accept you as President of the United States … Please treat people with compassion and respect.”

Lady Gaga went to Trump Tower in Manhattan early on Wednesday and posted a picture of herself on Instagram holding a “Love trumps hate” campaign poster.

“I want to live in a #CountryOfKindness #LoveTrumpsHate. He divided us so carelessly. Let’s take care now of each other,” she wrote.

Hollywood actors, comedians and filmmakers had thrown their support behind Clinton. According to the Center for Responsive Politics, entertainment sources contributed $22 million to her campaign and to pro-Clinton super-PACs through Oct. 19, compared with less than $290,000 for Donald Trump, Hollywood trade publication Variety reported this week.

Cher, who had said earlier in the campaign that she would move to Jupiter if Trump was elected, tweeted “World will never be the same. I feel sad for the young.” She made no mention of moving out of the United States.

Perry, who performed for Clinton at several campaign rallies, said “Do not sit still. Do not weep. MOVE. We are not a nation that will let HATE lead us.”

“A New Fire Is Lit. We Never Give Up. We never Give In,” wrote Madonna on Twitter.

“Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling, who is British, got into a Twitter spat after urging her followers to challenge “racism, misogyny and hatred.”

But Trump too had his show business supporters.

“CONGRATULATIONS PRESIDENT TRUMP! @realDonaldTrump against all odds ..against the establishment and even against most from the GOP..U did it!,” tweeted former “Cheers” actress Kirstie Alley.

Actor Stephen Baldwin, the brother of “Saturday Night Live” star Alec Baldwin, tweeted that he was “proud to have been part of such amazing history.”

Taylor Swift leads winners but Miley Cyrus rules at MTV VMA show

LOS ANGELES | It was all about the shock factor on Sunday as the MTV Video Music Awards became the unofficial Miley Cyrus show, with the scantily clad singer cursing her way through her hosting duties.

“I’ve literally done everything on the VMA stage and none of it showed I was qualified to host, but here we are,” Cyrus, dressed in a plunging, sparkly rainbow jumpsuit, quipped as she opened the show.

Cyrus, 22, changed outfits numerous times throughout the show, each time coming out with less on, and starred in comedy sketches showing her cursing and smoking marijuana with actors such as Andy Samberg, musicians such as rapper Tyga, and her father, country musician Billy Ray Cyrus.

Viacom Inc-owned MTV’s annual VMAs, which draws the network’s youth audience coveted by advertisers, awards its Moonman statuettes to the year’s top achievements in music videos, but has become better known for delivering irreverent and unexpected moments.

Minaj opened the show singing “The Night Is Still Young,” dressed in an flamboyant red outfit with a feathered headdress, before being joined by Swift for her hit “Bad Blood,” one of the top nominated videos of the night.

The two came together to perform after a Twitter altercation last month when Minaj said the MTV VMA nominations only rewarded videos by “slim girls,” sparking a reaction from Swift. But the two showed no signs of “bad blood” on Sunday and ended their performance with a hug.

Minaj did call out Cyrus for criticizing her in a recent New York Times interview, to which Cyrus insinuated that the interview had been manipulated and congratulated the rapper.

Swift led the early winners on Sunday as “Blank Space” won best female video and best pop video, while Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson’s summer hit “Uptown Funk!” was named best male video and Minaj’s raunchy “Anaconda” won best hip hop video.

Ahead of the show, Fall Out Boy won best rock video for “Uma Thurman,” and the fan-voted song of the summer award went to Australian boy band 5 Seconds of Summer’s “She’s Kinda Hot,” which garnered more than 52 million votes.

Miley Cyrus raising money for HIV charity

LOS ANGELES -- Pop star Miley Cyrus is releasing a MAC Viva Glam lipstick next year and all the money from sales of the cosmetic will got to the MAC AIDS Fund to help HIV sufferers.

The 'We Can't Stop' singer has teamed up with the cosmetic company to bring out her own branded lipstick in early 2015.

"Going #VIVAGLAM with @MACcosmetics. Look for my lipstick in early 2015 ... Every dollar from the sales of my #VIVAGLAM will go to @MACAIDSFund to help those affected by HIV! (sic)," she posted in Twitter.

The MAC AIDS Fund's mission statement is "to serve people of all ages, races and sexes affected by HIV/AIDS. We fund bold, visionary and brave trailblazers determined to end the epidemic".

Pop singer Miley Cyrus named MTV’s best artist of 2013

NEW YORK | Miley Cyrus, the pop star who caused a sensation with her raunchy performance at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards, was named best artist of 2013 by the cable TV network on Tuesday.

MTV said the singer dominated the music charts and the headlines with the release of her album “Bangerz,” her jaw-dropping performances at awards shows and her hosting stint on the television sketch show “Saturday Night Live.”

“She is the third artist to receive the distinction of being named MTV’s Best Artist of the Year with past honorees including Katy Perry (2012) and One Direction (2011),” MTV said in a statement announcing the results.

Cyrus, 21, was also ranked MTV.com top artist, based on fan visits to the site, and had the most watched video of 2013 with her live performance with singer Robin Thicke at the VMAs.

In an MTV documentary released in October, the “We Can’t Stop” singer admitted that she was out to shock and to push the boundaries. She said she was unapologetic for her provocative performance with Thicke.

Cyrus, the former Disney Channel star who shot to fame in the show “Hannah Montana,” has made a concerted effort to shed her good-girl teen image with her suggestive performances and revealing outfits.

Hip-hop artists Macklemore and Ryan Lewis came in second on the MTV list of best artists for 2013, with Justin Timberlake, rapper Kanye West and British boy band One Direction rounding out the top five.

Katy Perry was No. 6, followed by rapper Drake, R&B singer Bruno Mars, 17-year-old New Zealand-born singer/songwriter Lorde and Lady Gaga.

Miley Cyrus tops Yahoo’s 2013 searches, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis dominate Spotify

LOS ANGELES | Pop singer Miley Cyrus and the trial of boyfriend-killer Jodi Arias dominated Yahoo’s online searches in 2013, the web search engine said on Tuesday, while rapper-producer duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis dominated music streams on Spotify.

Cyrus, 21, generated the most overall searches on Yahoo this year, overtaking reality television personality Kim Kardashian, who topped the list last year.

Cyrus has had an attention-filled 2013, in which she grabbed headlines for her breakup with actor-fiance Liam Hemsworth, danced provocatively on stage at the MTV Video Music Awards in August, and released her new album “Bangerz” in October.

The murder trial of 33-year-old Arias, who was found guilty in May of killing her boyfriend Travis Alexander at his Phoenix-area home, captivated the public over five months with bizarre testimony and graphic sexual evidence, helping it become the most searched news item on Yahoo.

Arias’ trial was followed on Yahoo by the Affordable Care Act and its common name “Obamacare,” which were counted as one search term, as the second most-searched news story, while the Boston Marathon bombing in April came in third.

President Barack Obama was the top-searched political figure, topping ailing Nelson Mandela, the former South African president, at No. 2, and former Alaska governor and Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin at No. 3.

While Cyrus topped Yahoo’s overall searches, R&B singer Beyonce topped Microsoft’s Bing search engine as the most-searched person, while Kardashian’s first child, daughter North West she had with rapper Kanye West, topped Ask.com’s top celebrity search terms.

Online music-streaming site Spotify also released its 2013 year in review on Tuesday and named Seattle’s rapper-producer duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis as the year’s most-streamed artist.

The pair have seen their career skyrocket this year as their debut album “The Heist” spawned hit singles “Thrift Shop,” “Same Love” and “Can’t Hold Us,” which was the most-streamed single.

Shazam, the music-identifying online app, also named Macklemore & Ryan Lewis as its most “Shazamed” artist, with 11.7 million tags throughout the year. R&B singer Rihanna came second with 8.4 million tags. She was also named Spotify’s most-streamed female artist for a second consecutive year.

Miley Cyrus twerks her way to No. 1 on Billboard 200 album chart

LOS ANGELES | Pop singer Miley Cyrus twerked her way to the top spot of the weekly Billboard 200 album chart on Wednesday, notching her fourth chart-topping record.

“Bangerz,” which features Cyrus experimenting with hip hop, dance and R&B influences, sold 270,000 copies in its first week, according to figures from Nielsen SoundScan.

Former Disney star Cyrus, 20, has captured headlines with a series of scantily clad, raunchy performances that began with the MTV Video Music Awards last month, where she showed off some provocative dance moves, known as “twerking.”

In the video for her latest song “Wrecking Ball,” the second single from “Bangerz,” Cyrus is seen naked and swinging from a giant wrecking ball and provocatively licking a sledgehammer.

“Bangerz” leads seven new debut records in the top 10 of this week’s Billboard 200 chart. Alt-pop group Panic! At the Disco landed at No. 2 with its latest album “Too Weird to Live, Too Rare to Die!” selling 84,000 copies. Rapper Pusha T entered the chart at No. 4 with his latest set “My Name is My Name.”

The latest compilation of songs from Fox musical TV series “Glee” came in at No. 7 this week, featuring tracks sung by the cast for last week’s memorial episode “The Quarterback,” dedicated to deceased cast member Cory Monteith and his character Finn Hudson. The episode pulled in 7.4 million viewers according to Fox, the highest ratings for the show in over a year.

Other new debuts in the top 10 include metal rock band Korn at No. 8 with “The Paradigm Shift,” “The Voice” winner Cassadee Pope at No. 9 with “Frame by Frame,” and rockers Mayday Parade at No. 10 with “Monsters in the Closet.”

On the Digital Songs chart, New Zealand singer Lorde continued her reign at No. 1 with her breakthrough single “Royals,” while Katy Perry’s “Roar” remained steady at No. 2 and Aviici’s dance track “Wake Me Up!” climbed one spot to No. 3.

Overall, album sales for the week ending October 13 totaled 4.8 million, down 6 percent from the comparable week in 2012, according to Billboard. Singer Justin Timberlake’s “The 20/20 Experience” released in March, leads the top-selling albums of the year, with 2.3 million copies sold in the United States to date.

Actor Liam Hemsworth to arrive in Manila amid reports of split with Miley Cyrus

Australian actor Liam Hemsworth is expected to arrive in Manila early Friday amid widespread reports that he had just broken up with his fiancee, pop star Miley Cyrus.

The 23-year-old “Hunger Games” star is coming to the Philippines for promotional activities on behalf of Filipino clothing line Bench. He will fly in from his native Sydney where he reportedly fled after a supposed split with Cyrus, his girlfriend of three years.

Hemsworth will hold a press conference at The Peninsula Manila at 3PM on Friday, where the younger brother of “The Avengers” star Chris Hemsworth might or might not address the reports of the break-up.

His Twitter newsfeed denied the split on Wednesday and claimed Cyrus herself says the couple “are still together”.


His press conference will be followed by mall appearances at SM Mall of Asia at 5PM and Glorietta Palm Drive at 7PM.

Miley Cyrus: Australian Guys Are 'Way Hotter' Than Americans

For the fans who coveted her fianc´ Liam Hemsworth in The Hunger Games – and envied her when the couple announced their engagement last month – Miley Cyrus may be stating the obvious.

"[Australians are] way hotter. There's no competition," she told PEOPLE at Wednesday night's Australians in Film awards, where Hemsworth received the Australians in Film Breakthrough Award. Added Cyrus, 19, who grew up in Nashville, "I think there's a masculinity about [Australian guys] that is probably like growing up in the South, like what I did. They are a little bit more respectful, I suppose."



But he's more than a pretty face (and a hunky bod).

"My dad [singer Billy Ray Cyrus] has always been a really hard worker, so I like it when men work hard," she said. "I think it's important and I always work really hard, so it's good to have someone who is as passionate about what they do, and wants to be great at what they do."

And Cyrus wasn't the only one gushing. As he accepted his award, Hemsworth, 22, paid homage to the beginning of his career – when he met his soon-to-be wife auditioning for The Last Song in 2009.

"I was fortunate enough to get called back in and read with my now fiancée, and we read together and fell in love, and got married," he told the audience, before correcting himself. "Well, not married yet."

"We will be," Cyrus yelled from her seat.

Added Hemsworth, "We will be."

Miley Cyrus Parties in Hollywood While Fiancé Liam Hemsworth Works

While Liam Hemsworth was busy filming in New Orleans over the weekend, his fiancée Miley Cyrus made time to hit up her favorite Hollywood hotspot.

Popping into Beacher's Madhouse inside the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel at around 11:45 p.m., the "Can't Be Tamed" singer was joined by a group of girlfriends – and they immediately headed to Cyrus's usual table in the front row of the club.





"Miley spent most of the night dancing," an onlooker tells PEOPLE, adding that she shimmied to songs by Pitbull and Michael Jackson.

But it wasn't until Rihanna came on that Cyrus really seemed to be having a ball on the dance floor.

"She threw her hands in the air when the deejay started playing, 'We Found Love,' " the source says. "She was very chatty and was in a great mood. At around 12:15 a.m., she pulled her girlfriend into the photo booth to take pictures together."

Also on hand that evening was Alexander Skarsgard.

The True Blood hunk was "approached by a handful of girls," says the source, but "[seemed to enjoy] his evening mostly under the radar."
