Lead singer of South Korean boy band SHINee dies in possible suicide

SEOUL | The lead singer of top South Korean boy band SHINee died in hospital on Monday in a possible suicide that robs fans of the globally-famous K-Pop genre of one of its biggest stars.

Kim Jong-hyun, 27, was found unconscious next to burning briquettes on a frying pan inside a serviced residence in the South Korean capital Seoul, a police official told Reuters.

“His sister was first to call the police assuming that he might commit suicide,” said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive subject. Yonhap news agency said the singer sent a final message to his sister asking her to “let me go.”

Kim spent nearly a decade in his leading role as one of five members of SHINee, one of the most popular boy bands in the country, as well as a solo artist. His death is a blow to the massive worldwide fan base that Korea’s “K-pop” music has attracted in recent years.

Thousands of Korean children dream of becoming household names like rapper Psy, whose 2012 “Gangnam Style” video was a global YouTube hit, often putting up with punishing schedules in the hope of one day making it big in the music industry.

K-pop is the rage in Asia, especially in China and Japan, and the industry has made inroads in the West, with a song by the group BTS maintaining a spot on the Billboard 200 for a seven weeks as of the end of November.

The genre has become one of the defining icons of Korea and forms a major part of what’s been called the Korean Wave, or hallyu, that has made South Korea a global player in culture, in addition to electronics, cosmetics, and other industries.

K-pop’s international appeal is such that South Korean President Moon Jae-in used K-Pop celebrities at events, including a state dinner, in China last week in a bid to smooth out a year of difficult diplomacy with a star-laden charm offensive.

Another member of SHINee, Choi Min-ho, was brought in to make an appearance with U.S. first lady Melania Trump during a state visit to Seoul in early November, only to steal the spotlight from her when a loyal fan’s enthusiasm went viral in a video of the event.

Sean Richard explores the Korean Wave in new Discovery Channel series

With the phenomenal global success of Psy’s “Gangnam Style”, a lot of attention is now focused on the equally popular K-Pop genre.

The so-called Korean Wave has been around for more than a decade, providing a diverse offering of increasingly popular entertainment. Unlike Psy, its most popular entertainer today, the Korean Wave is certainly far from being an overnight sensation.

This is what “Korea Next”, a new series from the Discovery Channel, aims to explore in detail in five documentaries that will air starting December 16. Created by the winners of Discovery Channel’s First Time Filmmakers (FTFM) Korea, the premiere of “Korea Next” will showcase the heart and soul of Korean culture, cuisine, medicine, entertainment and technology.

One of these filmmakers is Sean Richard, a half-British and half-Korean actor who only moved to Korea in 2007. Richard will present “Finding Hallyuwood”, an episode that zeroes in on the inner workings of the Korean entertainment scene. So why does he call it “Hallyuwood”?

“The word ‘Hallyu’ is Korean for “the Korean Wave”. I wanted to do a play on words. Instead of saying “Hollywood”, I wanted to say “Hallyu-wood”, because I do feel like Seoul is just like – you know, Hollywood for the States is this hub of entertainment in Asia,” Richard told InterAksyon and other Asian journalists during a recent roundtable teleconference to promote the show.

“I wanted to make a point of it. I didn’t want to just make a documentary about, ‘Look how popular everyone is, and let’s just show screaming fans in Europe for Super Junior, and things like that,” he added.

In his documentary, Richard talked directly and in a very intimate way with the actual artists who are responsible for this Korean Wave. They include rapper Tiger JK, singer Yoon-Mirae and the manager of popular girl group Kara, who happen to be the rivals of 2NE1, another all-girl group where Sandara Park (known as Dara in Korea) is a member.

These artists did not just talk about how popular everything is, but they also provided some criticism and concerns as to how the Korean Wave will continue in the future.

“So I think in that way it will give viewers, especially foreign audiences, some interesting insider’s looks into this phenomenon right now”, he concluded.

Richard, who immediately starred in Korean dramas that rapidly found thier way in dubbed format in other countries including, yes, the Philippines thinks there’s definitely something special going on right now in his country.

“I definitely don’t think it’s going to go away. It’s been a blessing for me to be a part of the Korean Wave. I came in 2007 when the wave was going on, like basically the TV drama wave was at its prime at that time. But then right after, a few years later we had the K-Pop boom.

“And so the thing about Korea is that it’s always reinventing itself, and always giving something new to the world. And so just they’re constantly changing and finding new things to show.”

Asked to comment what to make of the huge overnight success of Psy and “Gangman Style”, Richard said he’s not surprised that people think of it as a “definite phenomenon”.

“I just checked, Psy has about over 945 million views on You Tube. I mean, I don’t think it’s something anyone really even believes right now is definitely going on. Especially in Korea, just it’s Psy every day on the news. You know, everyone’s so proud of what he’s done,” he enthused.

Of course, Richard, who was raised in the US, also wanted to present a bigger picture of what the Korean Wave is also about. So he also followed the conceptualization and training process of B.A.P., a rising six-member hip hop South Korean all-male act.

He also investigated the creation and production of a Korean television drama that revealed a deeper truth and critique of the Korean attributes that have made Hallyu what it is today. In the course of filming the project, one thing stood out to him.

“There is something special about being Korean. Usually artists are about being individuals and expressing themselves, but it’s funny that no matter what kind of job you’re doing, like I said you could be a chef, an athlete or a singer or anything, but if you’re Korean, then it comes back to representing your country. And you don’t see that kind of mentality a lot but it’s really strong in this country,” he observed.

“That was interesting for me, because I came from the States, it’s like a melting pot, you don’t see American stars going around the world trying to promote their country, right?

“But Korean stars are very much – you know, it’s K-Pop, that’s like Siwon Choi from Super Junior, he said like the word intrinsically is so interesting, because ‘K-Pop’ means ‘Korean Pop’, it’s another representative of Korea, you know? So it was really interesting to immerse myself in that mentality when I was doing this documentary.”

“Korea Next” premieres on Sunday, December 16, with two 30-minute episodes airing back to back from 10PM. Encores every Monday at 9AM and 3PM, and Saturday at noon.

Korean superstar Lee Min Ho arrives in Manila for promo tour

South Korean superstar Lee Min Ho arrived on Thursday, 1:10PM at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 1 on board Asiana Airlines flight OZ701 from Seoul.

The 25-year-old star of the action drama “City Hunter” was greeted by hordes of screaming Filipino fans, many of whom had waited for him since 9AM. Lee was supposed to arrive at 11AM, and the two-hour delay only caused more fans to assemble at the arrival area.

The fans were heard howling and shouting when the actor disembarked from the airline tube. Airline employees rushed to take a closer look at Lee, who gamely posed for a souvenir photo before being whisked away to a waiting SUV.

The actor is in town for a series of promotional activities for fashion retailer Bench. He will interact with fans at a “Benchsetter Fun Meet” on Friday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

He will do a mall tour for Bench on Sunday – 3PM at SM North EDSA Skydome, 5PM at Glorietta New Activity Center, and 6PM at SM Mall of Asia Music Hall.

Lee first achieved popularity throughout Asia in 2009 as one of the stars of “Boys Over Flowers”, the Korean adaptation of a Japanese television drama.

Lee Min-ho's Wax Figure Up For Display In Shanghai

MANILA, Philippines - Hallyu actor Lee Min-ho will be immortalized through a wax figure in Shanghai, China.

Madame Tussauds wax museum in Shanghai will showcase the actor's wax figure.

Lee Min-ho, who rose to fame when he starred in the hit Korean drama "Boys Over Flowers" in 2009, will join A-list celebrities whose wax figures are on display in the museum's Shanghai branch.

They are Julia Roberts, David Beckham, Robert Pattinson, Nicole Kidman, Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Madonna, Michael Jackson, Andy Lau, Jackie Chan and Yao Ming.

Representatives from Madame Tussauds from United Kingdom and China went to Korea to take Lee Min-ho's body measurements and take his pictures.

“To get different angles for my smile, I had to have my mouth open for three hours. I thought my jaw would break off. But to think I will be immortalized is kind of awesome,” said Lee, according to the Korea JoongAng Daily.

Lee Min-ho was chosen for the wax figure due to numerous requests from fans.

A museum representative was quoted as saying that Madame Tussauds selects individuals who receive love, care and respect from the locals.

Lee Min-ho is one of the most popular stars today in South Korea and other countries.

His official Facebook page has 5.78 million fans and his Twitter account has 762,944 followers. His Weibo account, China's version of Twitter, has 4.85 million fans while his Me2day account is followed by 256,519 fans.

The actor is also one of the most popular product endorsers in Korea. A poll held last month showed Lee Min-ho being chosen as the No. 1 male celebrity endorser for cosmetics.

Lee Min-ho's biggest career break came in 2009 when he was chosen to play Gu Jun-pyo in "Boys Over Flowers." The drama became a ratings hit in Korea and Asia.

This became a turning point to Lee Min-ho's career as it opened many opportunities for him. Since 2009, he has endorsed about 30 products and companies.

And his acting career continues to flourish. He starred in the drama "Personal Taste" in 2010 and "City Hunter" in 2011.

He currently stars in the historical drama "Faith," which started airing in Korea earlier this month.

Lee Min-ho's wax figure will reportedly be displayed at the Shanghai wax museum in April next year.

"Happy to introduce another Korean Superstar to our @benchtm family! Let's all welcome @ActorLeeMinHo!!!! #LeeMinHo4Bench," according to a tweet by Bench.

"Boys Over Flowers" won Lee Min-ho the best new actor in the 45th Baeksang Arts Awards and in the KBS Drama Awards in 2009.

This allowed him to play leading roles in succeeding dramas and solidify his popularity not only in Korea but in other Asian countries as well.

He won the excellence award in the MBC Drama Awards 2010. He bagged the best actor and hallyu star awards for "City Hunter" in the Korea Drama Festival Awards in 2011.
