AC/DC founder Malcolm Young dead at 64

Malcolm Young, who founded the Australian rock band AC/DC along with his brother Angus, has died at age 64 after suffering from dementia for several years, the band said on its Facebook page on Saturday.

Malcolm Young was a songwriter, backing vocalist and rhythm guitarist for AC/DC, a hard rock and heavy metal band that was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2003. Their hits included “Highway to Hell” from 1979 and “Back in Black” and “You Shook Me All Night Long” from 1980.

“Malcolm, along with Angus, was the founder and creator of AC/DC. With enormous dedication and commitment he was the driving force behind the band,” the band posted on Facebook without saying where he died.

Malcolm is survived by his wife O‘Linda, children Cara and Ross, three grandchildren, a sister and a brother, the band said. He “passed away peacefully with his family by his bedside,” the band said.

George Young, another brother to Malcolm and Angus, died on Oct. 23 at age 70. George Young had served as producer to AC/DC and guitarist for the band Easybeats.

Jimi Hendrix heirs clash with producer over film project

LOS ANGELES | Jimi Hendrix’s heirs clashed in court Thursday with a producer they alleged reneged on a deal for a concert movie about the iconic guitarist.

Lawyers for the Hendrix family and producer Gerald Goldstein took verbal swings at each other at the Los Angeles trial over rights to the movie, based on a series of concerts in Europe in 1969.

Goldstein originally wanted a $2 million budget to cover film’s print, advertising and distribution costs, and Hendrix’s estate contributed more than half of that amount.

But the producer allegedly pulled out of the deal when he realized the limited release that was planned for the movie, which was to feature footage from concerts in Austria, France, Germany and at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

“They pulled the rug out from under Mr Goldstein and destroyed his ability to present his vision of what he thought the film would be like,” Goldstein’s lawyer Brent Blakely told LA Superior Court Judge Mark Mooney.

But Hendrix family attorney Edwin McPherson said the Hendrix Experience, the business arm of the musician’s estate, could not agree to Goldstein’s demands for the project.

They are asking the producer to return their contribution to the movie.

“This is a great little film, but it’s not Michael Jackson and it’s not ‘Titanic,’” he said, referring to Jackson’s posthumous film “This is It” and the Oscar-winning 1997 movie starring Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio.

Hendrix’s 43-year-old sister Janie — the CEO of Experience Hendrix — was present in court Thursday, and may testify on Monday, lawyers said.

Hendrix died of an accidental drug overdose aged 27 in September 1970.

Queen guitarist Brian May undergoing cancer tests

LONDON - Queen guitarist Brian May underwent a scan on Monday as part of a series of urgent tests sparked by fears he could have cancer, the rock star revealed on his website.

The 66-year-old suffered agonizing back and hip pain earlier in December which left him barely able to stand, and MRI scans revealed "some abnormalities in the bones -- things that the report said needed urgent attention," he wrote.

"So around Christmas I've been having a succession of blood tests, ultrasounds, and various kinds of scans, to see if they could rule out various kinds of cancer," he wrote.

One of the scans was due on Monday, he said in the blog posting on brianmay.com dated December 28.

May said he was trying to be optimistic, as his doctors had told him that any cancer they might find would likely be treatable with success.

"Now, on hearing the 'C' word something happens inside you... of course. I've seen so many of my dear friends fighting it... and my dad lost his battle at age 66, exactly the age I am now," he wrote.

"So over the last few days I've been in various states of unrest."

But in a blog update on Monday, May said he was "overwhelmed by the amazing messages" of support from fans, adding: "I thank you all from the bottom of my heart."

May was a founder member of Queen, the world-famous rock group fronted by Freddie Mercury until the singer died as a result of AIDS in 1991. May penned the hit single "We Will Rock You."

Guitarist Jack White stalks off NY concert stage after 45 minutes

NEW YORK – Jack White didn’t quite repeat the rock star meltdown by Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong, but he did enrage fans by stalking off the stage just 45 minutes into his Saturday night concert at New York City’s famed Radio City Music Hall.

The critically acclaimed guitarist behind the White Stripes and The Raconteurs – and now touring behind his solo record “Blunderbuss” – pulled the plug after 12 songs lasting just 45 minutes.

White, 37, thanked the crowd and exited stage right, leaving the sold-out venue chanting for more. The crowd’s enthusiasm initially turned to perplexity as roadies removed White’s guitars but transformed into anger as the curtain fell on the stage.

No official explanation was given for White’s quick exit. While audience members had been told not to use their cellphone cameras, early in the concert White was seen exchanging words with someone video recording the concert from the seating area nearest the stage.

In between songs, White also seemed underwhelmed by the crowd response, at one point asking, “Jesus Christ, is this an NPR convention?”

Radio City security officials scrambled to barricade the stage door as angry concert goers crowded the exit and, once outside, banged on two parked tour buses. Other fans crowded the lobby to return t-shirts, records and other merchandise purchased ahead of the show.

Twitter lit up with complaints and theories about why White quit.

“Chatter about Jack White’s abbreviated show at New York’s Radio City Music Hall last night has officially lasted longer than the concert itself,” noted Spin.com, the music website.

White’s skill as a guitarist has enabled him to play with the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Jeff Beck, Alicia Keys and other well-known musicians.

His abrupt exit came a week after Green Day’s Armstrong said he would seek substance abuse treatment after losing his temper at the iHeartRadio Festival in Las Vegas, culminating in an expletive-laced tirade followed by the smashing of his guitar.
