Mark Striegl disappointed after foe missing weight results in scrapped PXC 41 fight

Filipino-American featherweight contender Mark ‘Mugen’ Striegl was just raring to get back into the Pacific X-treme Combat (PXC) cage to wash away some of the sting of his previous fight – a loss to current 145-lb. division champion Jang Yong Kim.

Unfortunately for Striegl, his return is going to have to wait after scheduled foe Ev Ting missed weight by a whopping seven pounds, leaving the Baguio-based fighter without an opponent for the night.

“Of course I’m bummed out. I trained really hard for this fight, especially after my last fight with Jang Yong Kim,” a disappointed Striegl told InterAKTV during the PXC 41 event at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.

Striegl expressed some frustration after seeing his return fight scrapped from the schedule through no fault of his own.

“I feel as a professional fighter, you have two jobs – one is to make weight and the other is show up on fight night and fight. Ev Ting failed to make weight. It is what it is,” he said.

“And he didn’t try to make weight either. PXC gave him time and he quit.”

The Fil-Am fighter is looking to get his career arc back on track after suffering his first professional loss against Kim last September. While this sets his plans back a little, he’s more concerned about his fans that he is about himself at this point.

“I just feel I let down some of my fans who showed up and bought tickets and wanted to see me fight tonight.”

Striegl is now set for a possible February return against a yet-to-be-named opponent. But given the choice, he would rather it not be Ting, whom he doesn’t trust not to repeat his actions in this one.

He is ready to move past it, though, and is preparing for the next challenge ahead.

“It sucks, but I just have to look forward to the next one,” he said.

Miss World Megan Young overwhelmed by rapturous homecoming welcome

Megan Young couldn’t help but wax emotional upon seeing the throng of well-wishers that greeted her much-anticipated homecoming at the NAIA Terminal 1 Thursday.

“These are tears of joy. I’m just really happy to be home. I’m just really happy to see everyone,” exclaimed the newly crowned Miss World 2013 during a mini-press conference upon her arrival.

The 23-year-old Filipino-American actress and film student admitted that she still couldn’t believe she was the new Miss World even after she had proceeded to London following her victory in the prestigious pageant in Bali, Indonesia.

“First time ko sa Europe. Hindi ko ma-imagine na magta-trabaho pala ako doon as Miss World. It still hasn’t sunk in to me yet,” she confessed.

As she learns more of her upcoming activities in her scheduled world tour, Megan said she now has a better understanding of the “Beauty with a Purpose” mission of the pageant.

“Ang gusto ko lang sanang hilingin, hindi lang ako ang nandidito para sa Miss World, sana lahat ng Pilipino dito at everyone worldwide kasama ko sa journey bilang Miss World. Hindi lang po ito korona, malaking bahagi ng puso bilang Miss World ang ibinabahagi namin sa buong mundo,” she pleaded.

She later revealed that she intends to raise funds for the charitable projects of Miss World, particularly for the children of Africa who have no access to clean water.

“I was very excited when they told me we were going to Kenya and Ghana because I’ve always wanted to go to those parts of Africa,” Megan said during another press conference at Solaire Resorts and Casino that preceded her homecoming victory dinner party.

As for her own countrymen, Megan’s schedule for the next four days will be capped with a charity visit to the Philippine General Hospital. She said she also hopes to do charity work for street children here while reiterating her concern for the recent typhoon victims in her hometown of Olongapo City which she will visit on Saturday.

“Para sa mga kababayan ko rin po sa Olongapo, I just hope everyone’s okay. I will visit my fellow Batang Gapo during my stay here,” she added.

Although she did not make it on time to toss the ceremonial jump ball in the equally anticipated NBA Global Game between the Houston Rockets and the Indiana Pacers, Megan was likewise greeted with loud cheers upon her arrival at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Aside from her visits to Olongapo and the PGH, Megan’s busy schedule include a courtesy call with President Noynoy Aquino at Malacañang this Friday. This will be followed by a Grand Fans Day that will commence with a motorcade victory parade from Makati to SM Mall of Asia where a meet-and-greet affair will immediately follow.

With regards to personal matters, the reigning Miss World was asked if there was anyone special in her life right now. Megan replied in the negative but did not rule out the prospects of meeting one in the course of her travels as Miss World.

Prior to her winning Miss World Philippines this year that led to her crowning as the new Miss World, Megan was romantically linked with GMA Network talent Mikael Daez. Neither Megan nor Mikael have publicly admitted being in a relationship.

Megan managed to post a lone tweet early Friday morning that expressed what it means for her to finally come home.

Megan Young bags Philippines’ first Miss World crown

After a long wait and several near misses, the Philippines finally won its first Miss World title as 23-year-old Megan Young, a Filipino-American actress from Olongapo, captured the coveted crown at the Bali International Convention Center in Bali, Indonesia on Saturday.

The result was posted on the Facebook page of the prestigious beauty pageant as Young bested nine other semifinalists from Brazil, Australia, France, Nepal, England, Indonesia, Spain, Jamaica and Ghana. There were a total of 131 contestants from around the world — the most in the pageant’s history.

“It’s destiny!” Miss World Phillippines franchise holder Cory Quirino said in a text message to InterAksyon. “The honor is not only Megan’s but the Philippines’. We have made history and have proven once and for all that the Filipina is the most beautiful woman in the world! Mabuhay ang Pilipinas,” she added.

Prior to her coronation, Young also figured prominently in three of the preliminary compeititions in the pageant, winning the Top Model challenge and finishing in the Top 5 of the Beach Fashion and Multimedia Award contests.

She achieved her victory despite the malicious resurfacing of her sexy photos from a March 2012 magazine shoot courtesy of what Miss World Philippines franchise holder Cory Quirino called “a smear campaign by a neglible sector of the Philippine pageant industry”.

Megan became the country’s official representative after winning the Miss World Philippines pageant last August in a lopsided contest where she swept most of its special awards, including Best in Fashion Runway, Miss Sports by FILA, Miss Reducin, Miss Olay, Miss Laguna, Miss Bold and Glamorous by Revlon, Miss Figlia and Miss Bench Body.

Also a digital filmmaking student at the De La Salle-College of St. Benilde, Megan recently appeared in the TV5 sexy drama series, “Misibis Bay” and headed the ensemble cast of the independent crime anthology, “Bang Bang Alley”.

Established in 1951, Miss World is the oldest major international beauty pageant in the world and is part of the “Big Four” international beauty pageants that also includes Miss Universe, Miss Earth and Miss International.

Fil-Am eats 18 'balut' in five minutes to win New York competition

With that, 27-year-old Hollis resident Wayne Algenio set a record for balut-eating in New York, the first competition of its kind in the city.
In a YouTube video, Wayne could be seen focused at stuffing his mouth, drinking bottled water and occasionally dancing. At the end of the Maharlika-organized contest, he was awarded the championship belt, bits of ‘balut’ or days-old duck fetus still stuck around his mouth.

“I’m very excited about being the balut champ of New York,” Wayne told The FilAm. “I didn’t realize how much media coverage there was.”

“This contest was my first experience with ‘balut’ and I didn’t really get the full taste of it because I was just shoving it into my mouth and eating it as fast as possible,” he described the summer afternoon contest held in Brooklyn’s DeKalb market. “I did not have a tummy ache afterwards; actually I was still hungry.”

Wayne works as a sterilization technician at SurgiCare of Manhattan. He studied at CUNY’s John Jay College.

He has participated in a Dani’s pizza-eating contest and placed fourth, winning $100.
For this competition, Wayne won a belt and no cash prize. “Just receiving a belt was more than enough for me,” he said.

He vowed to be back next year “to defend my title.”

Fil-Am teen among Denver injured

Manila, Philippines - A Filipino-American teenager was one of those injured when a gunman opened fire on Friday at a Colorado movie theater playing the new Batman film “The Dark Knight Rises,” the Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed yesterday.

DFA spokesman Raul Hernandez said the Philippine Consulate in San Francisco reported that Ryan Lumba, 17, was among those injured and admitted to the University of Colorado Hospital.

“The Consulate received a report that a Fil-Am was one of those injured and had been admitted to one of the local hospitals in the Aurora area. However, no specific information could be released,” Hernandez said in a text message to The STAR.

In an ABS-CBN report, Lumba’s mother Remy said her son, who remains unconscious was shot in the stomach and underwent surgery.

Aurora is a suburb of the city of Denver, Colorado, 32 kilometers from the scene of the 1999 Columbine High School massacre, in which two students shot dead 13 people before committing suicide.

Other Asians who were injured during the shooting incident include three Indonesians, Indonesian Foreign Affairs Minister Marty Natalegawa reported yesterday.

“Three Indonesian nationals were injured in the incident. It’s a father, a mother and their son,” he said.

Natalegawa added the 15-year-old son and the mother were being treated for gunshot wounds while the father only suffered a bruise on his left eye.

Police said Holmes was arrested soon after the massacre, although the motive of the assailant remains unknown.

A federal law enforcement official said Holmes bought a ticket to the show, went into the theater as part of the crowd and propped open an exit door as the movie was playing.

Several survivors remarked on their initial confusion as the attack unfolded that the silhouetted gunman dressed in black, wearing a helmet, body armor and a gas mask as he stepped through a side door, was part of a stunt in the movie.

“I thought it was showmanship. I didn’t think it was real,” Jennifer Seeger, one of the shooting survivors, said.

“He looked like an assassin ready to go to war,” said Jordan Crofter, one of the moviegoers unhurt in the attack.

“All I saw is the door swinging open and the street lights behind, and you could see a silhouette,” Crofter, who was sitting on the left side of the theater and toward the front, added.

But then as he threw gas canisters that filled the packed suburban Denver theater with smoke and opened fire, people screamed and dove for cover.

Seeger, who was in the second row, about four feet from the gunman, ducked to the ground as the gunman shot people seated behind her.

“He would reload and shoot and anyone who would try to leave would just get killed,” Seeger recalled, adding that bullet casings landed on her head and burned her forehead.

Within minutes, frantic emergency services calls brought some 200 police officers, ambulances and emergency crews to the theater.

Holmes was captured in the parking lot.

According to Aurora police chief Dan Oates, Holmes used a military-style semi-automatic rifle, a shotgun and a pistol.

“My understanding is all weapons he possessed, he possessed legally. All ammunition he possessed, he possessed legally,” Oates told a news conference, adding that he had purchased four guns at local gun shops within the past 60 days and bought 6,000 rounds of ammunition.

Suspect described as ‘a loner, shy’

Meanwhile, neighbors described Holmes as a “loner” often seen carrying guns to and from his home.

“He was always wearing camouflage pants and a hat,” said Gabriel Macias, a Mexican who works at a meat factory. He recalled seeing Holmes carrying guns and weapon cases to and from his apartment.

“We did not know him well because he talked to nobody. He was always locked up behind his door,” said Macias.

Melvin Evans, a security guard from a nearby building, said he occasionally saw Holmes at a local bar.

“He was always by himself. Looked like a nice guy,” said Evans, 33. “I go to the bar every Sunday for karaoke. I’ve seen him there every now and then. We would talk sometimes, the weather, you know.”

A student, who only gave his name as Ben, said Holmes kept to himself and would not say hello or acknowledge other people in the hallway.

Ben also revealed he had called police shortly after midnight – coincidentally around the time of the massacre at a Batman premiere – to report a song blaring from inside Holmes’ apartment.

Ben could not make out the song, but it appeared to be playing on repeat.

Tom Mai, a next-door neighbor of the Holmes family in San Diego, remembered Holmes as a shy teenager who did not play or socialize with other youngsters in the neighborhood, the San Diego Union-Tribune newspaper said.

“He said that he last saw him two years ago when he came home during summer recess from college,” it said on its website. The family, he said, “was nice and involved with a Presbyterian church.”

On Friday morning, police escorted Holmes’ father, a manager of a software company, from their home while his mother, a nurse, stayed inside, receiving visitors who came to offer support. Holmes also has a younger sister.

“As you can understand, the Holmes family is very upset about all of this,” Lt. Andra Brown, the San Diego police spokeswoman, told reporters in the driveway of the family home. “It’s a tragic event and it’s taken everyone by surprise. They are definitely trying to work through this.”

Police released a statement from his family that said: “Our hearts go out to those who were involved in this tragedy and to the families and friends of those involved.”

Holmes’ family said they were cooperating with investigators.

The FBI described Holmes as a white male, 6-foot-3 (1.9 meters) tall, born on Dec. 13, 1987, with no significant criminal record and no links to terrorism.

Police in Aurora, Colorado, told reporters records showed that the shooting suspect’s only infringement in the city was a speeding ticket in 2011.

Holmes graduated from University of California, Riverside, in the spring of 2010 with a bachelor’s degree in neuroscience, a school spokesman said.

Mai said the mother told him Holmes could not find a job after earning a master’s degree and returned to school.

He enrolled in the Ph.D. neuroscience program at the University of Colorado-Denver in June 2011 but left the program last month, according to the university. – With AP

Asian-American leaders laud Obama nomination of Fil-Am as federal judge

A woman lawyer could become the first Filipino-American to serve as an Article III federal judge if her nomination by US President Barack Obama is approved by the US Senate.

Article III judges enjoy lifetime tenure.

The nomination of Lorna Schofield was immediately hailed by Asian-American community leaders.

“I am honored to put forward these highly qualified candidates for the federal bench,” President Obama said in nominating Schofield and three others. “They will be distinguished public servants and valuable additions to the United States District Court.”

“As a second-generation Filipino American, Ms. Schofield’s nomination and confirmation by the Senate would make her the first in the history of the United States to serve as a federal judge,” said National Federation of Filipino American Associations chairman Ed Navarra. “Given that Asian Americans are significantly underrepresented in the federal judiciary, Ms. Schofield’s addition will greatly enhance the judiciary’s diversity.”

“We congratulate Lorna Schofield on her nomination to serve as a federal district court judge on the Southern District of New York,” said Nimesh M. Patel, president of the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association. “She is an exceptionally well-qualified nominee, and we thank both President Obama and Senator Schumer for putting her name forward to serve on such a distinguished court.”

“It is exciting to finally see a Filipina American have the opportunity to serve as a federal judge,” said KAYA: Filipino-Americans for Progress co-chairman Jason T. Lagria. “Growing up, there were not many Filipino lawyers I could look to as role models, and I hope her nomination inspires members of our community to follow in her footsteps.”

Schofield is a second-generation Filipino-American, the only child of a post-World War II Filipina immigrant who raised her after her father left them when she was just three years old.

She received a full tuition scholarship to attend Indiana University and earned her law degree from the New York University Law School in 1981.

In 2008, she was named one of the nation’s 50 most influential minority lawyers by the National Law Journal.

She served as Assistant United States Attorney in the criminal division of the Southern District of New York for four years where her significant cases involved prosecuting domestic terrorism, arms smuggling, and tax fraud.

Schofield was the first Asian American Pacific Islander to chair the Litigation Section of the American Bar Association’s largest section, which has over 60,000 members, and has also served as a member of the ABA’s Standing Committee on the Federal Judiciary.

Fil-Am group campaigns for votes to save Jessica Sanchez

MANILA, Philippines – Spread the word: "Vote for Jessica!"

The Washington-based Migrant Heritage Commission (MHC) on Saturday asked Filipinos all over the world to vote for Jessica Sanchez on-line after the Filipino-American born finalist in the ongoing American Idol was almost eliminated from the popular American television show. She was “saved” only because the three judges exercised their one-time vote privilege to retain her in the hotly-contested program last Wednesday.

MHC is a non-profit, service-oriented organization run by Filipino immigrants in the United States based in Washington, D.C.

Miss Grace Valera, MHC executive director, in an urgent e-mail, appealed to all Filipinos here and abroad to cast their votes for Jessica Sanchez for her to win the coveted American Idol 2012.

Valera’s e-mail said:

“Dear Kababayan, family, friends, friends of friends. . . Our dear JESSICA SANCHEZ almost got eliminated from AMERICAN IDOL tonight (THURS.,12 APRIL 2012) had the Judges not saved her… Kababayans, pls vote for her every Wednesday night...right after the show...all of your cellphones (500x), landline (500 x), ONLINE facebook (50x). http://www.americanidol.com/vote/.

“Please help us campaign to everyone ‘to vote for her.’ It’s only a once-a-week sacrifice for a truly deserving, multi-talented kababayan. We cannot be overconfident on just a few votes. It’s NOT the judges deciding on their own. It’s America! Unfortunately, Judges can only save a contestant ‘once’ so this now depends on all of us NOW on how to save her in the coming weeks... VOTE FOR JESSICA SANCHEZ!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PKOo_2q4_CM. MARAMING SALAMAT PO.”

In the episode last April 11, Sanchez got the fewest home viewers’ votes from among the seven finalists.

However, Sanchez was allowed to remain in the show when the judges decided to use their one-time “The Judges’ Save” privilege.

"Give me that [microphone]! This is crazy! Yes, we're using 'the save!' You're not going home. Go sit down, go sit down," Idol judge Jennifer Lopez told Sanchez after she ran onstage.

"We are saving Jessica without any doubt," another judge, Randy Jackson, said.

"Let me just say this for myself. This girl (Jessica) is one of the best singers in America -- ever. Are you kidding me?! Please everybody, please vote for the best. It's about finding the best. I mean, come on," the third judge, Steven Tyler, said.

The 16-year-old Sanchez was stunned by the decision of the three judges.

Sanchez blurted out: “I don't expect anything. I just do what I do and whatever happens, happens. I just want people to know I've been working hard my whole life."

With Sanchez remaining in contention, hopes are high she could bag the American Idol and become the first ever Filipino-American to win the prestigious award, although some quarters believe the judges’ “strong show of bias” may turn off the audience and even doom Jessica in further voting.
