Stress is bad for your career and health

MANILA, Philippines - Stress at work can greatly affect your performance, your career, but most especially, your health. Premier health institution Makati Medical Center lists down the factors that may cause workplace stress and how to deal with such situations early on.

“Stress brings about many health disorders,” begins Saturnino P. Javier, MD, a cardiologist at MakatiMed and president of the Philippine Heart Association. “It can worsen already existing illnesses such as asthma and diabetes, trigger headaches and gastrointestinal problems, can make you prone to depression and anxiety, and cause you to age faster than usual.”

“One of the most serious illnesses associated with stress concerns the heart,” he further warns. Stress may have a direct effect on the heart and blood vessels, and at the same time, it increases one’s likelihood of smoking or eating unhealthily — habits that may also increase heart risks. Sudden emotional stress can trigger serious cardiac problems, such as heart attacks.

“That’s why before heart problems even start, know what makes you stressed and how you can prevent it,” says Dr. Javier.  “The workplace is one of the most common places that put pressure on individuals, and being in the office during most days of the week, take time to assess and see if your work situation is causing you stress.”

“While stress is managed differently by different individuals, there are common situations at work that may cause it. Generally, an employee may feel stressed if he is under pressure from the demands of his job — be it the hours, the responsibilities, or the work load. If these are too much for him to take or greater than he can comfortably manage, it can pose risks to his health,” he says.

Tight deadlines, long hours, and heavy workload, changes within the organization or in the duties of the employee, job insecurity and few promotional opportunities, harassment and discrimination, and poor relationships with colleagues and bosses may be some of the causes of workplace stress.

“When your attitude towards your job and your behavior at work changes, you’re most likely stressed,” warns Dr. Javier. This could mean an increase in sick days, aggression, diminished creativity and initiative, mood swings, low tolerance of frustration and impatience, disinterest, and isolation.

Other common signs of stress are fatigue, muscle tension, sleeping difficulties such as insomnia, and dermatological disorders. Psychological symptoms include irritability, pessimism, feelings of discouragement and being overwhelmed, and cognitive difficulties such as the reduced ability to concentrate or make decisions. “Such signs tell you that your work is taking over your life and it’s about time you did something about it,” he says.

“Change your lifestyle — not only to battle stress, but also to aim to live healthier overall. Stop overeating, drinking, and smoking. While these seem to calm you and reduce stress, you’re only adding to it,” he says. “Stick to a good diet, exercise regularly, and spend time to relax both your mind and body so you can fight stress effectively.”

Non-competitive exercises, such as aerobics, have been shown to release endorphins, which are natural substances that help maintain a good disposition. “Of course, it helps a lot to set realistic goals for yourself, learn the art of saying no to tasks you know you can’t handle, and maintain a positive outlook in life,” Dr. Javier advises.

Piolo, Though Loveless, Looks Forward To Producing More Films

Even with so much on his hands, Piolo Pascual remains passionate about accomplishing more for his career and in testing his artistic limits, especially when it comes to producing films.

The award-winning actor and singer revealed to Bulletin Entertainment and select members of the media that, “We have many concepts na gusto naming i-develop.”

“So lumalabas na lang ‘yon, bigla na lang naiisip mo ‘yung mga ganung konsepto. We’re working on a couple of concepts na sana mag-materialize in the next couple of months,” he added.

His first venture into producing came in the form of “Manila,” a twin bill independent film helmed by esteemed directors Raya Martin and Adolf Alix Jr., released in 2009. “Manila” had a special screening at the Cannes Film Festival in France. It was also the opening film at Cinemalaya Cinco.

The same year also marked the release of “Kimmy Dora: Kambal sa Kiyeme,” the box office, critically-acclaimed film he produced. Its sequel, “Kimmy Dora and the Temple of Kiyeme” was released last June.

Piolo does not dismiss the possibility of a third “Kimmy Dora” film, given that “maganda nang franchise ‘yon para kay Uge (lead star Eugene Domingo) and marami pang idea na puwede nating laruin.” He noted, however, “hintayin natin si Chris Martinez (writer) tsaka si Joyce Bernal (director). Sila naman ‘yung utak nun eh.”

His personal life has been quiet since his split from KC Concepcion last year. Nevertheless, the 35-year-old Kapamilya star is happy even without a special someone.

“Trabaho muna. Masaya ako sa trabaho…” he said. Indeed, he maintains his bankability more than 10 years since his career took off. He’s gearing for a TV series with Angelica Panganiban, as well as a movie in which, he hinted, would see him in his most offbeat role to date.

Another thing that keeps him occupied is sports.

“Nag-Ironman (triathlon) kami pero I just did the bike leg so I really wanna be able to do all three – swim, bike, and run – and that’s what I’ve been training for in the last couple of months kaya masaya, masarap,” Piolo added.

Of course, Piolo also tends to his daddy duties to 14-year-old son Iñigo, who has returned to the US to resume his studies after a two-month vacation in the Philippines.

“He was with me during summer in the States so para kaming kambal na magkasama, hindi kami nagkakahiwalay, kahit sa’n ako kasama ko siya. It was good na we had time together,” he enthused.

Piolo graced the gala night of Sun Shorts held Sept. 7 in Resorts World Manila. The event showcased five digital films by Filipino directors, which were produced by long-running insurance company Sun Life Financial-Philippines (of which Piolo is an ambassador) in collaboration with Unitel Productions.

The short film collection features visually captivating works by Jerrold Tarog (“Sun Dance”), Jolly Feliciano (“A Life In A Day”), Chris Martinez (“Oh My Goth!”), Nic Reyes (“The Debt”), and Jun Reyes (“1945”) – all of which underscore the values of friendship, family, love, chasing one’s dreams, embracing possibilities, as well as positivity.

Bianca King Says Career Decision Is Not About Money

MANILA, Philippines — TV host and director Bianca King said she has all the right reasons to remain a loyal Kapuso.

Reports have it that Bianca is being groomed as the network’s next big star. She is at the moment the female lead actress of the soon-to-end soap opera “Broken Vow” and “Luna Blanca,” GMA-7’s newest primetime series. With her contract expiring in one year, rumors have it that she might be eyeing transfer. But Bianca was quick to deny: “I have all the right reasons to stay with GMA-7. It is not a question of money. It’s a question of values and integrity also.”

She added that as a Kapuso actress, she was well taken care of with TV projects.

“Kahit siguro triple pa ang i-offer nila in the future. Siguro na lang kapag wala na akong projects. Pero kung patuloy ang ganito, that every show iba ang ginagawa ko, I have all the right reasons to stay,” stressed Bianca King whose career is managed by GMA Artist Center.

“From playing a rape victim or a battered wife, my role in ‘Luna Blanca’ is a stretch because I’m painted black. It’s also the first time that my character is bubbly and cheerful despite her looks,” she remarked.

Painted black also meant making sure her facial expressions are recognized amidst her dark skin. Confident with her acting from years of portraying various TV roles, Bianca challenges herself even more in “Luna Blanca” especially since she’ll be working with actress Heart Evangelista in a lot of scenes.

“I’m excited and honored to work with Heart Evangelista na lumaki akong pinapanood sa TV and when I was still in school. Sobrang surreal na makaka-eksena ko na siya for the first time,” Bianca remarked.

Bianca said that she and Heart will be having a harmonious working relationship. There won’t even be future issues about “sapawan” because for her, she’d rather focus on delivering what’s needed to make the show interesting and enticing to watch and the same is expected from Heart.
