Japan to finance feasibility study for BGC-NAIA3 monorail

MANILA - Japan has agreed to finance the feasibility study for a proposed monorail project that would link the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT3) to Bonifacio Global City (BGC) and the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 (NAIA3).

"The government of Japan is willing to finance it. So, since there is no cost to the government, we are allowing them to undertake a full-blown feasibility study," Arnel Paciano D. Casanova, president of the Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA), said.

He said the study will look at aspects of the project other than the cost. Based on the pre-feasibility study done by Japan's Ministry of Economy, Transportation and Industry (METI), the project would cost P70 billion.

Casanova said the proposed 12.56-kilometer alignment of the monorail project will start from the MRT3 Guadalupe station, enter BGC through the north gate and end at NAIA3.

The monorail project should be completed by 2016 and would serve 12-15 million passengers. BCDA plans to pursue the project through a public-private partnership (PPP) scheme.
