Slater Young returns to primetime as mainstay of new John Lloyd-Bea series

When Slater Young became the big winner of “Pinoy Big Brother: Unlimited,” bigger things were immediately expected from the popular housemate dubbed as “The Hotshot Engineer of Cebu.”

For some reason, it took a while for Slater to make his mark in the business as instead of becoming a mainstay for any ABS-CBN show, he spent much of 2012 doing guest appearances on shows like “Maalaala Mo Kaya,” “Gandang Gabi, Vice” “Sarah G Live!” and “Pinoy Big Brother Uber Teen Edition.”

He also landed a couple of small roles in Star Cinema’s “Kimmy Dora and the Temple of Kiyeme” and “The Reunion” while also doing provincial tours.

Even with these fairly impressive credentials, it was still quite a departure from being the center of attention at Kuya’s house. Slater himself admitted that during his stint there, people romantically linked him with four housemates, namely Tin Patrimonio, Deniesse Joaquin, Pamu Pamorada and Divine Smith, who remains his closest friend among them.

Although he wouldn’t say if he was more than just close friends with any of those four girls, he went as far as saying that he had plenty of “fond memories in that house.”

As for the rather deliberate pacing of his showbiz career development after “PBB”, Slater said he wasn’t really bothered by it. Being a civil engineer by profession, he was still putting his academic training to good use in the family’s construction business.

But the lure of the limelight proved to be too tempting to resist. “The urge to do more was always there. In a way, it was the reason why I joined PBB in the first place, not to actually win because I did not expect to but because of my desire to try something new,” Slater confessed.

Now Slater is finally getting his wish as ABS-CBN decided to cast him in “A Beautiful Affair,” the latest teleserye to star the durable love team of John Lloyd Cruz and Bea Alonzo.

Playing Bea’s cousin in the series, he is thrilled by the idea of being seen on primetime television almost everyday for the hopefully lengthy run of the much-anticipated soap. In addition to showing his acting chops, Slater said he will also be given his own love interest in the series, which could be Megan Young who is also in the cast.

“I have to admit that I’m quite nervous at the start of our taping because I grew up watching John Lloyd and Bea and now I’m part of their new series,” recalled Slater. “Good thing they’re both really nice and are very supportive, especially Bea since we have a lot of scenes together.”

His busy schedule now has prompted him to move here in Manila where he is still getting used to the big city’s fast-paced lifestyle.

“But I still visit my family in Cebu at least once a month,” he shared. “When I’m there, I just get to be more of myself there.”

Of course with visibility comes endorsements and being a self-confessed health buff who watch what he eats and knows how to keep himself fit by going to the gym everyday, Slater is the perfect brand ambassador for a health drink like Smart-C.

His Civil Engineering background is also not lost on World Vision and Habitat for Humanity who also invited him to be their ambassador.

With his showbiz career finally taking off after a slow start, Slater hopes his lovelife, which he says is zero at the moment, would also start to get more exciting. His increased visibility has already allowed him to meet some of his showbiz crushes like KC Concepcion, Julia Montes, Anne Curtis, Iza Calzado and Solenn Heussaff.

Not that the he has any plans of seriously pursuing any of them. “Just to meet them is already a big thrill for me,” he enthused. “I guess it’s really true that good things do come to those who wait.”
