Global FC to vie for third place in 2013 Singapore Cup on Thursday

United Football League squad Global FC will try to end its 2013 Singapore Cup campaign on a winning note in the tournament’s battle for third place slated on Thursday in the city-state.

Global will face S.League side Balestier Khalsa FC at the Jalan Besar Stadium for the battle for third place which the Philippine side hopes to win as a consolation after its impressive tournament debut this year.

Despite making its first appearance, Global made a splash in the tournament after toppling defending champion Warriors FC, 2-nil, in the preliminary stages. The UFL powerhouse went on to edge Brunei Duli Pengiran Muda Mahkota FC with a 5-4 aggregate victory in the two-legged quarterfinals last July.

Global saw the end of its contention for the Singapore Cup after falling to S.League side Tanjong Pagar United, 4-3 on aggregate, in the two-legged series last October.

In the third place battle, Global will try to outdo the fourth-place finish of fellow UFL squad Loyola Meralco Sparks during the country’s first appearance in the competition last year. The Sparks bowed out early in the tournament this year after losing to Tanjong Pagar in the quarterfinals.

The annual Singapore Cup pits local clubs in the city-state against foreign teams, mostly from Southeast Asia, in a knockout tournament.
