Sam Concepcion Shrugs Off ‘Rivalry’ with Daniel Padilla

MANILA, Philippines — Heartthrob Sam Concepcion gave a smart answer when asked how he feels that newbie Daniel Padilla’s rising star has seemingly left him behind by miles.

“Di naman po, nakikita ko pa naman siya sa ABS-CBN,” said Sam in a recent interview for his upcoming movie “I Do Bidoo Bidoo.”

Turning serious, Sam pointed out that everyone has his place in the business and that ABS-CBN has been taking care of his career, too.

“Hindi ako nagtatampo sa ABS at all. In fact, I’m thankful to them kasi may mga magagandang plano din sila for me.”

Asked if he feels “threatened” that Daniel and other Kapamilya hunks seem to be eyeing Kathryn Bernardo, too, whom Sam is said to fancy, the latter made light of the matter, saying: “Makapaghihintay naman po ako.”

Indeed, Sam has other things on his plate besides his lovelife and supposed rivals. He is set to star in “I Do Bidoo Bidoo” in which he’ll have his first screen kiss with actress Tippy Dos Santos.

“Tippy and I have been friends since way back. We represented the country in a festival in Korea when we were kids, and last year, we were first paired in ‘Peter Pan.’ I was Peter to her Wendy,” Sam was quoted to have said in a release. “We have this rapport that comes from years of friendship.”

Asked about the kiss, Sam said, “When we did the scene, I was already Rock who is madly in love with Tracy. So, it was ok. The more memorable parts are the minutes before and after the take.”

What made Sam a bit nervous was pitting comedic talents with Eugene Domingo and Ogie Alcasid whom the latter referred to by the characters they popularized.

“Syempre, kelangan galingan ko at sina Kimmy Dora at Boy Pick-Up yan. Pano kung di ako nakakatawa?” the young man quipped, laughing.

According to another release, Unitel Pictures’ “I Do Bidoo Bidoo” is a heartwarming musical comedy that celebrates the music of the APO Hiking Society, whose hits summed up young people’s thoughts, dreams and aspirations in the ’70s and ’80s, and even those of today’s generation who embraced revivals of APO hits in recent years. The movieoke tells the story of young lovers who are about to get married but are torn by their families’ differences.

How did he relate to APO songs that became hits even before he was born?

“Kahit bata ka ngayon at di mo pinapakinggan ang music nila, alam mo pa din yung mga songs kasi it’s part of being Pinoy, yung music nila.”

Other in the cast of “I Do Bidoo Bidoo” are Gary Valenciano, Zsa Zsa Padilla, Sweet Plantado, Frenchie Dy, Neil Coleta, Jaime Fabregas, Kiray Celis, and Gerald Pesigan. The movie will start showing nationwide on Aug. 29.
