Apple industry hurt by budget

Australia's apple industry says the federal government has turned its back on growers in a 'rotten' federal budget.

Apple and Pear Australia Limited (APAL) is warning of job losses after the government ignored a request for a $21.9 million investment in best practice orchard management techniques.

'Without additional funding from the government the industry could face widespread job losses which would have a devastating impact on many rural communities,' APAL managing director John Durham said in a statement.

APAL chairman John Lawrenson said it was another blow to the industry following policy changes that allowed international apple imports for the first time in 90 years.

'If additional funds aren't secured to invest in helping growers improve efficiencies in a low-priced market then we will no doubt see casualties,' he said.

APAL said it would continue to seek funding from the government on behalf of apple growers. - AAP
