Michael Jordan praises ‘little brother’ Kobe Bryant

Michael Jordan paid tribute to Kobe Bryant in a pre-game video before Monday night’s matchup between the Los Angeles Lakers and Charlotte Hornets.

Jordan, who owns the Hornets, did not attend the game but made sure the retiring Bryant got a warm send off from the Charlotte organization.

“I’m a big fan,” said Jordan. “I still love watching you play.”

In the video, Jordan describes the 37-year-old Bryant as a “big help to the game of basketball.” He then refers to him as a little brother.

“We are very proud of what you have accomplished over the years. Have a great game. But not too good.”

Jordan competed against Bryant in the latter part of his brilliant NBA career.

Bryant announced recently he would retire at the end of the 2015–16 season.

Star shock

Meanwhile, Bryant was stunned to learn he’s the runaway leader in fan voting for the 65th NBA All-Star Game as he battles through his 20th and final season with a lackluster Los Angeles Lakers team.

Amid debate earlier this month on whether he deserved an 18th all-star appearance, Bryant said it would be “great” to play once more in the mid-season exhibition, but said he’d support the showcase no matter what.

When early returns were announced on Friday, Bryant led the likes of reigning Most Valuable Player Stephen Curry of Golden State and Cleveland Cavaliers superstar LeBron James.

“I was like, ‘What the hell?’” the 37-year-old said. “Shocked doesn’t do it justice. It’s exciting. What can I say? Just thankful.”

Cisco wins US patent dispute over wifi technology

NEW YORK — Cisco Systems Inc did not infringe a patent holding company’s wifi technology, a U.S. appeals court ruled on Monday, reversing a near $64-million judgment against the networking equipment maker in the long-running patent dispute.

After eight years of litigation that also included a trip to the U.S. Supreme Court, the decision from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit said Cisco was not liable for directly infringing or inducing others to infringe a patent held by Commil USA LLC on a way to help spread wireless signals over a large area, where multiple access points are needed.

Cisco General Counsel Mark Chandler said the company was gratified by the ruling. “The patent never had anything to do with our products and the millions of dollars spent defending this unmeritorious suit are a travesty,” he said in an emailed statement.

Representatives for Commil could not be reached on Monday.

Texas-based Commil USA sued Cisco in 2007, shortly after buying the patent from an Israeli company, Commil Ltd, according to court documents. Cisco has called it a non-practicing entity, referring to a company that primarily makes money by licensing patents instead of making products.

In 2011, a federal jury in Texas found that Cisco induced infringement by encouraging its customers to use Cisco products that infringe Commil’s patent. The jury awarded Commil almost $63.8 million in damages. A judge subsequently added $10.3 million in interest.

In 2013, the Washington, D.C.-based Federal Circuit, the nation’s top appeals court specializing in patent issues, ordered a new trial, saying that Cisco should have been able to mount a defense based on its “good faith belief” that Commil’s patent was invalid.

The Supreme Court in May said that defense was not legitimate, throwing out the ruling and sending the case back to the Federal Circuit.

A three-judge Federal Circuit panel on Monday again ruled in favor of San Jose, California-based Cisco.

The panel said that when it last considered the case, it did not consider some of Cisco’s arguments that it did not infringe the patent. In weighing those arguments this time, the panel said that “substantial evidence did not support the jury’s findings.”

TONGUE IN CHEEK | Miss Universe host says 'Merry Easter'

Washington, United States - Steve Harvey, the man who famously gave the Miss Universe crown to the wrong contestant, has now offered the world Easter greetings – on Christmas Day.

"Merry Easter, y'all!" ran the caption to a picture of smiling Harvey, smoking a cigar and flashing a peace sign. The picture was posted Friday (early Saturday in the Philippines) on Harvey's social media accounts.

Harvey poked fun at himself – and his gaffes – in his first public appearance since the high-profile fiasco.

Harvey, a 58 year-old comedian and talk show host, misread his cue card in front of a global television audience at the Miss Universe pageant on December 20 and announced that Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutierrez, had triumphed.

Moments later he apologized and announced Miss Philippines, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, was the actual winner.

Harvey apologized on Twitter for what he called "an honest mistake," but identified the women as "Miss Philippians and Miss Columbia." He quickly corrected the spelling mistakes and deleted the tweet.

Viewers can expect to see a lot more of him: "Steve Harvey Signs Multi-Year Deal to Host Miss Universe" ran the headline on the web site Comedyhype.com. Harvey posted a link to the site on his Facebook page.

The contract was signed just before the pageant aired, and the deal "is for at least three years, possibly even as many as six or seven," read the brief text, quoting an ET Online story.

After the pageant mixup several people took to Twitter to claim that the affair was a publicity stunt aimed at boosting both Harvey and the event's sagging TV ratings.

"I generally don't buy into conspiracy theories, but this is the most attention the Miss Universe pageant has gotten since, well, ever," said newspaper sportswriter Les East.

"Steve Harvey's mistake was all a conspiracy created for two purposes: Make Miss Universe relevant again. Make Steve Harvey relevant again," another tweet said.

The online magazine Salon dismissed the doubters as "Miss Universe truthers" – an American term for conspiracy theory devotees – that "show how paranoid we've become."

Justin Bieber lets UK doctors and nurses beat him to top of Christmas charts

LONDON | A choir of doctors and nurses beat Justin Bieber to the Christmas number one spot in Britain’s pop music chart Friday after the heartthrob urged his fans to buy their song.

The Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Choir’s charity single, “A Bridge Over You”, outsold Bieber’s “Love Yourself” to snatch the coveted festive top spot.

That came after Bieber wrote on Twitter Wednesday: “So for 1 week it’s ok not to be #1. Let’s do the right thing & help them win. It’s Christmas. @Choir_NHS good luck”.

The southeast London-based choir is made up of staff who work for the state-funded National Health Service.

Their song is a mash-up of “Bridge Over Troubled Water” by Simon and Garfunkel and Coldplay’s “Fix You”.

Other songs in this week’s top ten which it has beaten include two other hits by Bieber plus Adele’s “Hello” and One Direction’s “History”.

Harriet Nerva, a junior doctor in the choir, decided to start a social media campaign to get the song to number one after a particularly tough day at work.

“A patient with cancer that I had been looking after for quite a number of weeks died,” she told the Guardian newspaper.

“I was listening to the song and it dawned on me that a great way of translating how I was feeling and how proud I was to work for the NHS would be getting (the song) to number one”.

Britain’s NHS is the fifth largest employer in the world, providing health care which is largely free at the point of delivery.

It is widely respected, with pollsters YouGov rating it the institution which most people view positively, and Prime Minister David Cameron’s attempts to reform the service are highly politically sensitive.

Mississippi declares emergency as storms in US South kill 11 on Christmas Eve

Southern US states began digging out on Thursday after severe storms killed at least 11 people, and Mississippi declared a state of emergency in areas pounded by tornadoes.

With about 100 million Americans expected to travel over the Christmas holiday, the National Weather Service forecast isolated severe thunderstorms from the mid-Atlantic region to the Gulf Coast and record warmth in New York.

The storm system packed high winds and triggered more than 20 tornadoes in Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Mississippi, Tennessee and Michigan on Wednesday, authorities said.

A large tornado tore a 100-mile (160-km) path through northern Mississippi, demolishing or heavily damaging more than 100 homes and other buildings before plowing into western Tennessee, authorities said.

Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant declared a state of emergency in areas affected by the storm, saying 14 tornadoes had touched down in the state. Bryant said seven people were killed and one person was missing.

"Everybody is pulling together here in Mississippi today to help respond to this disaster," Bryant said on CNN.

He said shelters had been set up and the full extent of the damage would not be known for several days. Mississippi authorities said some 40 people were injured and a 7-year-old boy was among those killed.

Three people died in Tennessee and an 18-year-old woman was killed in Arkansas when a tree crashed into her house, authorities said.

Thirteen counties in Tennessee suffered severe damage, with a post office destroyed and a state highway washed out.

Emergency crews in Mississippi, Alabama, and Tennessee were searching for several people reported missing. Scores were injured in the region.

A rare tornado touched down in Canton, Michigan, and about 15,000 homes in the state and neighboring Wisconsin were without electricity. The weather service issued a gale force wind warning for Lake Michigan, where waves could reach 15 feet.

About 500 flights were delayed or canceled at Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson airport as the area was hit by a thunderstorm.

Meanwhile, much of the northeast enjoyed balmy weather on Thursday, including New York, which surpassed its record for the warmest Christmas Eve reaching 71 degrees Fahrenheit (22 C).

Cold and snow were forecast on Christmas Day for the US Northwest, including temperatures in the teens in Montana and snow likely in Washington, Oregon, northern California, and Nevada.

Of the 100 million Americans traveling over the holiday, 91 million will use cars, according to the American Automobile Association.

Western countries issue rare Christmas security alerts for Beijing

BEIJING - At least four Western countries took the unusual step on Thursday of issuing Christmas security warnings for Westerners in a popular Beijing diplomatic and entertainment district as police stepped up patrols.

Beijing is generally safe and criminals rarely target foreigners, although the fashionable Sanlitun bar and restaurant area occasionally sees fights. In August, a lone attacker stabbed a French man and a Chinese woman there. The woman died.

The US Embassy said in a brief statement it had "received information of possible threats" against Westerners in Sanlitun, also home to many embassies, on or around Christmas Day, December 25.

The French Embassy, Britain's Foreign Office and Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs issued similar warnings. None of them elaborated.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said he was aware of the reports and that the government paid great attention to foreigners' safety.

Beijing police, in a statement on their official microblog, said they had issued a "yellow" security alert for Christmas and New Year, the second lowest level, focused on areas like malls, which are likely to see more people visiting during the festivities.

"Beijing police are planning ahead and taking many measures ... to ensure good public order," it said.

Christmas is not a holiday in officially atheist China, but more and more young people celebrate it as they view it as a sophisticated Western custom and excuse to give gifts.

A Reuters photographer saw police commandos with guns in front of Sanlitun's main mall. Regular police tend not to carry guns in China, and gun crime is in any case uncommon.

The city overall has been on much higher alert, with patrols by armed police in popular shopping and tourism sites, since a fatal car crash in 2013 at the top edge of Tiananmen Square in which five people died.

The government blamed that incident on Islamist militants from China's unruly far western region of Xinjiang, where hundreds have died in unrest in recent years.

While the violence has generally been limited to Xinjiang, last year at least 31 died in a knife attack at a station in China's southwestern city of Kunming, also blamed on militants from Xinjiang.

Porn star Rocco Siffredi offers to teach sex in Italy's schools

ROME, Italy - Porn star Rocco Siffredi, known as the "Italian stallion," has launched a petition demanding sex education become mandatory in Italy's schools and offered himself up as a teacher.

"I wanted to launch this appeal because sex is a magnificent thing," he wrote on the website that began collecting signatures on Tuesday.

"I put forth my name and my experience, I make myself fully available to go into Italian schools and personally promote this initiative," the 51-year-old added.

Despite efforts stretching back over a century and dozens of legislative proposals, sex education is not part of the curriculum in Italy's schools.

The petition on change.org, addressed to Italian Education Minister Stefania Giannini, had gathered some 21,600 supporters by Wednesday.

"Pornography should be entertainment, but due to lacking alternatives, it has become a means to learn, especially for young people," he said.

"I have been doing my work for 30 years and I have acquired enough experience to guarantee that what I do is not sex education," he added.

Miss Germany apologizes to Pia Wurtzbach after post-pageant tirade

After granting a post-pageant interview where she aired her displeasure over the outcome of this year’s Miss Universe pageant as a result of the controversial mistake of host Steve Harvey, the Miss Universe Germany organization issued a statement of apology on behalf of Miss Germany Sarah-Lorraine Riek on their Facebook page.

“Miss Universe Germany Sarah-Lorraine feels sorry for her colleague and friend Miss Colombia. This must have been the worst nightmare. She never intended to offend Miss Philippines in any way. She feels sorry for both girls. As well for Pia Miss Philippines that she didn’t have her real crowning moment,” went the first part of the three paragraph statement written in the third person.

“She is really sorry if the video suggests anything else than that. It’s an emotional roller coaster what happened yesterday in Las Vegas. She and all the other girls felt so sorry for Colombia at that moment. They could all imagine how this must feel. That’s not the final result moment what you wish for anyone. And also for Pia.”

The Facebook page of Miss Universe–Germany, however, seems to have been taken down along with the apology.

In the video of her post-pageant interview that was posted on the Facebook page of pageant analysis site Missosology, Riek — who failed to land in the Top 15 semifinals — said she was upset at the result and thought Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutiérrez Arévalo “deserved to win” because “no one of us (the other contestants) voted for Philippines.”

Riek’s remarks immediately elicited angry comments from Filipino fans of Pia which may have contributed to Riek’s change of heart just hours after the viral video of her interview was posted.

Another factor that may have also contributed to Riek’s rapid change of heart was the possible belated realization, that Pia is, in fact, “half-German.”

“Sarah-Lorraine is very happy a half-German girl brings the crown of course a bit to Germany as well! Congrats to our friends from Philippines from winning the crown after all. She wishes Pia all the best for this year as Miss Universe 2015,” the statement concluded.

While Harvey may have messed up the announcement of the Miss Universe winner, the outcome was never in doubt as far as the judges were concerned.

In his recent podcast following the pageant, celebrity blogger Perez Hilton, one of the four judges in the competition, revealed that all of them voted unanimously for Pia.

“I voted for Miss Philippines, and I found out afterwards that it was unanimous. Every single judge in that panel, all four of us, voted for Miss Philippines to be number one.”

“So then, when Steve Harvey announced that Miss Colombia had won, I was in shock. I couldn’t even speak…we were all in shock, we knew something was off…I thought, ‘This is rigged’. But then it became clear when Steve comes out and announces that a mistake was made,” Hilton concluded.

Kobe Bryant sees Olympic gold a ‘beautiful’ ending to his career

Kobe Bryant says he’s not pushing to play on the US Olympic team in Rio, but the retiring Los Angeles Lakers guard said Monday it would make a “beautiful” ending to his 20-year career.

The 37-year-old American guard, a five-time NBA champion and gold medal winner at the 2008 Beijing and 2012 London Olympics, announced last month this would be his final NBA campaign after a historic career.

After battling nagging injuries for years, Bryant is fit but the Lakers are in a rebuilding mode and at 4-23 have the second-worst record in the NBA.

Missing the playoffs could leave Bryant rested and in form to become the first man in Olympic history to win three basketball gold medals, should he earn a spot on the two-time defending champion American squad.

“It’s not something I’m absolutely pressing for but being part of the Olympic experience is a beautiful thing,” Bryant said.

“It would be a beautiful thing to finish my career playing internationally. But that being said we will see how it goes.”

LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul and Deron Williams would also have the chance for an unprecedented men’s Olympic hat-trick at Rio, but for Bryant it would be a golden farewell.

“I try to look at my legacy as much as how do I impact the future, not where do I rank among the best players all time,” Bryant said when asked where he fell among NBA icons.

“It’s a moot point and for me it’s pretty much of a shallow argument. It’s how do I impact the generation of players coming in by what I have done. I think it has impacted the generation coming in a big way and they will pass that along to the next generation to come.”

Bryant, a 17-time NBA All-Star, was speaking ahead of his record-setting 16th career appearance in a Christmas NBA matchup, his Lakers hosting the rival Los Angeles Clippers on December 25. He is the all-time leader in scoring for games on the holiday.

Bryant has been nagged by injuries in recent seasons and is struggling with a sore right shoulder. He is averaging 16.7 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.4 assists a game this season for the Lakers, with career averages of 25.2 points, 5.3 rebounds, 4.8 assists and 1.5 steals a game.

“I would have loved to have played overseas but it’s not going to happen. Body won’t let me,” Bryant admitted.

“My body has been through a lot. And it’s very easy to forget I haven’t played because of it. My timing is off, my rhythm is off. It was about me continuing my training and believing my timing will come back and that’s what happened.”

Bryant said he expects the megastar trend of the NBA to continue in the wake of Michael Jordan, LeBron James and himself, saying, “I think there’s going to be a player in the next 10 years that’s going to rise above it all.”

Rising Aussie star

As bad as this season is going, the Lakers could be in position for the top pick in next year’s NBA Draft, and that could be Australian forward Ben Simmons, who is averaging 18.7 points, 13.9 rebounds and 5.8 assists a game this season as a freshman at Louisiana State University.

“He’s a tremendous player. He has got a lot of potential,” Bryant said of Simmons.

But Bryant warned that the Lakers carry a history of success that must be respected by those who would join them.

“It’s not about handing over the keys,” Bryant said. “For the players that are here, winning championships is the only goal. That’s the attitude.”

Bryant, who spent some of his youth in Italy, said he plans to be a global ambassador for the sport, naming Singapore and Africa as two of his planned destinations.

“I definitely plan on helping the game spread and helping kids all around the world understand all that surrounds the game and its potential,” Bryant said. “I look forward to visiting places like Africa and teaching the game.”

FIFA bans an ‘important first step’
He also called the eight-year bans issued Monday to FIFA president Sepp Blatter and UEFA president Michel Platini an “important first step” in cleaning up global football.

The American spent several years as a youth in Italy playing football and supporting AC Milan. He follows the sport and was clear in his condemnation of Blatter and Platini, barred for abusing their positions over a suspect $2 million (1.8 million euro) payment.

“It’s always a touchy thing. You are dealing with a big business,” Bryant said.

“I think this is an important first step to cleaning up the sport.

“With life being as brutal as it is, we come to sport as an escape. When something like this happens, it damages the emotional Shangri-La you get from sport.”

Bryant had confidence that those making efforts to revamp FIFA in the wake of the corruption will succeed.

“I’m sure they are on top of it and I’m sure they will get the sport back where we all want it to be,” Bryant said.

Greek parliament OKs civil union for same-sex couples

ATHENS, Greece -- Greece's parliament early on Wednesday approved a bill granting same-sex couples the right to a civil union, despite strong opposition from the influential Orthodox church.

The law was supported by 193 lawmakers out of 249 present, with 56 voting against it.

"This is an important day for human rights," Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras told the chamber.

Tsipras said the bill gives same-sex couples "equal rights in life and death," terminating a practice of "backwardness and shame" for Greece.

The new law resolves property and inheritance issues, but makes no provision for the adoption of children.

Amnesty International hailed the move as a "historic step" but noted that lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) persons still faced hostility in Greece.

"Despite this first step, LGBTI people in Greece still live in a climate of hostility from which the authorities are failing to protect them adequately," said Gauri van Gulik, Amnesty International's Deputy Director for Europe and Central Asia.

"Physical attacks are on the rise, hate speech is common and goes unchecked by the authorities. Even displays of affection between same-sex couples are censored on television," van Gulik added.

Amnesty further pointed out that the law offers no gender recognition to transgender people.

Greece had been condemned for anti-gay discrimination by the European Court of Human Rights in 2013, after gay couples were explicitly excluded from a prior civil unions law in 2008.

"Instead of celebrating this, we should apologize to thousands of our fellow citizens," Tsipras said.

In addition to Tsipras' left-wing Syriza party, the bill was supported by another four parties.

However the nationalist Independent Greeks (ANEL), who are part of the governing coalition, voted against the motion.

"The Greek constitution protects motherhood. Is there motherhood in men?" asked ANEL lawmaker Vassilis Kokkalis.

Members of the Greek gay, lesbian and transsexual community had earlier staged protests outside parliament and the Athens cathedral.

"Love is not a sin," read a sign held by protesters as two young men dressed like priests kissed in front of the cathedral.

Greece was until now one of the last European countries where same-sex couples could not receive some kind of official recognition for their relationship.

The country's first two same-sex civil marriages held in 2008 were annulled by a court a year later under pressure from the Greek Orthodox Church, which officially frowns upon same-sex relations.

Lobbying by the church was also instrumental in excluding same-sex couples from benefitting from the 2008 civil union bill which modernized family law and aligned national law with EU rules.

A prominent Greek bishop this week described homosexuality as a "crime" and said "accursed" gays should be "spat upon."

Ford in talks with Google to build self-driving cars — Automotive News

Google is said to be in talks with automaker Ford Motor Co (F.N) to help build the Internet search company’s autonomous cars, Automotive News reported, citing a person with knowledge of the project.

The contract manufacturing deal, if finalised, is expected to come during the annual International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas during the first week of January, Automotive News said.

A Google spokesman told Automotive News that the company would not comment on speculation, although Google officials confirmed that the company is talking to automakers.

Earlier this year, Google began discussions with most of the world’s top automakers and assembled a team of traditional and nontraditional suppliers to speed efforts to bring self-driving cars to the market by 2020.

In June, Google began testing tiny, bubble-shaped self-driving prototype vehicles of its own design on public roads around Mountain View. The company has also started testing self-driving prototypes in Austin.

Google is expected to make its self-driving cars unit, which will offer rides for hire, a stand-alone business under its parent company, Alphabet Inc (GOOGL.O), next year, Bloomberg reported earlier.

Ford, although lagging behind most competitors, ramped up its pace to develop self-driving cars earlier this year and said it would expand advanced safety technology, including automatic braking, enabling hands-free operation of cars under certain conditions by automating such basic functions as steering, braking and throttle.

This was to be included across its global lineup over the next five years.

Reuters could not independently reach Ford Motor and Google for comment outside regular U.S. business hours.

Miss Philippines is 2015 Miss Universe

LAS VEGAS- Miss Philippines was named Miss Universe Sunday in a drama-filled turn worthy of a telenovela.

The pageant's host, comedian Steve Harvey, misread his cue card which he initially said had Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutierrez, as the winner.

She was briefly, very fleetingly, crowned in Las Vegas and started the customary smiling and waving.

But not for long.

As she blew kisses, Harvey awkwardly said "I have to apologize. The first runner-up is Colombia."

"Miss Universe 2015 is Philippines," he added, with the Colombian contestant left like a deer in headlights and the actual winner, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, looking stunned.

And all on live television with millions watching from Manila to Manchester.

"It was my fault," Harvey stammered as a perplexed audience held its breath.

"Please don't hold it against the ladies," added the talk show host.

The contest, held in Las Vegas this year, is wildly popular in Latin America and much of Asia.

Later in his Twitter account, @IAmSteveHarvey, the host apologized for his mistake: "I want to apologize emphatically to Miss Philippians (sic) and Miss Columbia. This was a terribly honest human mistake and I am so regretful."

Congrats from Malacanang
Malacanang immediately sent a congratulatory note, saying the entire country “unites in celebration” of Wurtzbach’s win.

“Throughout her journey, Ms. Wurtzbach showcased to the world the characteristic beauty, intelligence, and elegance for which Filipinas are renowned. In the first few moments of the original announcement, she showed tremendous poise and control, and even more tremendous graciousness when the real verdict was finally announced,” said Palace spokesman Edwin Lacierda.

“We congratulate her for this success as the third Miss Universe of the Philippines, following in the footsteps of Ms. Gloria Diaz and Ms. Margie Moran-Floirendo,” he said.

Lacierda noted the Filipinos’ support of Wurtzbach.

“In bagging this victory, Ms. Wurtzbach not only serves as a tremendous source of pride for our people, but also holds up the banner of our women and of our country -- as a true representative of what the Filipina can achieve. Indeed, this triumph is the result not only of her beauty but also of her passion for positive change, as one who is confidently beautiful with the heart. Over 42 years and today, once more the Philippines shines forth with joy and celebration,” he said.

Advocate for HIV/AIDS prevention

Congresswoman Kaka Bag-ao (Lone District, Dinagat Islands), one of the principal authors of the Revised Philippine HIV/AIDS Policy Act in the House of Representatives and awaiting Senate approval, said: "I'm very happy that we do not only have a Miss Universe; we have a brave advocate for HIV/AIDS prevention. By taking on the issue, she is greatly helping in reducing stigma and discrimination."

Labor group the Trade Union Congress of the Philippines-Nagkaisa also welcomed "the positive and exponential presence" of Miss Universe into the campaign against Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). "Pia's leverage into the campaign against HIV and AIDS in the country is a morale booster to HIV/AIDS advocates and activists. She comes into the issue at a time when the campaign is at all-time low because of appalling high growth of incidence and everyone seemed not to care anymore. Ms. Wurtzbach's energy and vitality into the advocacy will radically change the equation," said TUCP spokesperson Alan Tanjusay.

Sanders apologizes to Clinton over voter data breach

MANCHESTER, United States - White House hopeful Senator Bernie Sanders on Saturday apologized directly to Democratic presidential frontrunner Hillary Clinton for his campaign peeking at voter data belonging to his rival.

"Yes, I apologize," Sanders said when asked by a moderator at the party's debate in New Hampshire whether Clinton deserved an apology.

"This is not the type of campaign that we run. And if I find anybody else involved in this, they will also be fired," Sanders said, adding that he hoped both campaigns could "work together" on an independent investigation into what happened.

The Democratic National Committee on Thursday temporarily suspended the Sanders campaign's access to the party's voter database after the breach was discovered. Sanders fired a staffer for accessing the data.

The incident occurred when a technical glitch -- in which a firewall protecting proprietary data was briefly lowered on Wednesday -- made voter data unique to the Clinton campaign viewable for outside eyes.

Clinton said she accepted her rival's apology and supported launching an independent inquiry.

But while she stressed that her staff had worked hard to collate private data, "we should move on because I don't think the American people are all that interested in this.

"I think they're more interested in what we have to say about all the big issues facing us," she said.

The third Democratic debate, the final one of 2015, also includes former Maryland governor Martin O'Malley, who is polling well behind his two rivals.

New technique can monitor batteries’ performance loss

LONDON — An international team of researchers has developed a sophisticated 3D imaging technique to track in real time how disposable Lithium batteries degrade during normal use, according to a study released Friday by the University College London (UCL).

The study follows calls from investigators in August 2015 for a safety review of all lithium battery-powered equipment on planes after a fire broke out on board a grounded Boeing 787 Dreamliner at Heathrow Airport in 2013.

The UCL-led team used cutting edge X-ray imaging techniques to track different types of wear and tear which cause performance loss and linked this wear to design features of the commercial battery.

The images formed cross-section time-lapse videos showing the damage occurring on the electrodes inside the battery in real time, according to the study.

“Electrical activity was high in some areas of the cell, whereas it was low in others; layers of electrode material separated and cracked. All of these changes in structure affect the flow of electricity and reduce the performance of the cell,” said Donal Finegan from UCL, who worked on the study.

This could give a new way to non-invasively monitor performance loss and guide the development of more effective commercial battery designs.

“We effectively mapped the activity and strain on the material inside the battery which will help manufacturers predict how a particular battery will perform during operation and over time. We see this is a valuable tool for optimizing the material used in commercial batteries, which will improve their resilience,” Finegan also said.

New ‘Star Wars’ sets $57 million opening night record

LOS ANGELES | “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” has set a new opening night record in the United States and Canada and was poised to become one of the biggest grossing movies ever, industry experts said Friday.

The latest instalment of the highly anticipated space epic raked in $57 million dollars for its opening night Thursday, beating the previous record — $43.5 million — held by “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2″ in 2011.

“This represents a new record for the industry and portends a massive and potentially record-breaking opening day and weekend for the film,” said Paul Dergarabedian, of box office tracker Rentrak.

The “Harry Potter” film holds the all-time record for opening day at $91 million, but the new “Star Wars” is expected to also force it out of that slot.

Overall, “The Force Awakens” has grossed some $130 million dollars worldwide since it opened overseas on Wednesday, setting records in Britain, Germany, Norway and Sweden.

Analysts predict that the seventh instalment of the iconic space saga, which cost Disney an estimated $200 million to produce, could score the biggest opening weekend ever and could even become the biggest film of all time.

The opening weekend record is currently held by “Jurassic World” which premiered earlier this year to $208.8 million at the box office.

As far as all-time box office sales, two films by James Cameron hold the record — “Avatar” ($2.78 billion) and “Titanic” ($2.18).

“The potential for ‘The Force Awakens’ to ultimately break into the $2 billion club worldwide is certainly in the realm of possibility,” Dergarabedian said.

Added Jeff Bock, box office analyst at Exhibitor Relations: “As far as breaking records go, it’s the strongest candidate weve seen in a long, long time.

“It might join the $2 billion club worldwide, and maybe, just maybe, be the highest grossing film of all-time.”

Disney, which bought the rights to the “Star Wars” franchise from its creator Georges Lucas for $4 billion in 2012, has built up the hype around “The Force Awakens,” rolling out a well-orchestrated marketing campaign that has left fans wanting more.

Early reviews of the movie have given it a thumbs up, and three more instalments are due in the coming years.

“The Force Awakens” picks up the intergalactic story of good versus evil 30 years on from “The Return of the Jedi,” the finale of the original trilogy.

The trio of heroes who appeared in the first of the blockbusters in 1977 — smuggler Han Solo (Harrison Ford), Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher), and her twin brother Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) — are all back and played by the actors that Star Wars first made famous.

The film is being screened in 4,134 theatres in North America, a record for a December opening.

N.W.A, Deep Purple to join Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

NEW YORK | California rap group N.W.A., British metal band Deep Purple and rock-pop group Chicago are among the musicians chosen to join the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016, organizers announced on Thursday.

Singer Steve Miller, who crosses multiple genres from blues to pop, and 1970s rock band Cheap Trick will round out the five 2016 inductees, which were chosen by fans and more than 800 voters of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation.

Artists are eligible for inclusion in the Cleveland, Ohio-based Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 25 years after the release of their first recording.

Pop singer Janet Jackson, English progressive rock band Yes and Britain’s The Smiths were among those on the short list but who failed to make the cut this time.

N.W.A., formed by five rappers including Dr Dre and Eazy-E in the troubled Compton neighborhood of Los Angeles, revolutionized the music scene in the mid 1980s with lyrics drawn from the violence, crime and anti-police sentiments that the rappers themselves experienced growing up.

They went on to sell more than 100 million albums and their story was chronicled in this summer’s hit movie “Straight Outta Compton,” which has been nominated for a Screen Actors Guild award.

Deep Purple, formed in England in 1968, are regarded as heavy metal pioneers thanks to their ear-splitting live shows, ground-breaking albums and flagship track “Smoke On The Water.”

Cheap Trick “display a musical consistency over almost 40 years,” Hall of Fame organizers said in a statement, while Miller, 72, has moved from blues to pop and back again, producing classic hits like “Fly Like an Eagle” and “Take the Money and Run.”

Chicago, who broke onto the music scene in the late 1960s, fused jazz and rock to produce hits like “25 or 6 to 4″ and the romantic ballad “If You Leave Me Now.”

The 2016 induction ceremony will be held in New York on April 8, and broadcast later in the year on cable channel HBO.

Serena Williams named Sportsperson of 2015 by Sports Illustrated

Serena Williams, who owned the tennis world this year even as she battled illness and injury, was named sportsperson of 2015 on Monday by Sports Illustrated.

The magazine said it was honoring the 34-year-old icon both for her positively stunning numbers and her pluck in achieving what it called one of the greatest late-career runs in the history of any sport.

Williams won three major titles, triumphed in 53 of the 56 matches she played and ranked number one for every week of the season for the second straight year.

And for six weeks this season, Williams had twice as many ranking points as the world number two player. Sports Illustrated said this was a first in the 40-year history of the WTA rankings.

But those stats mask a year that was “all internal discord and quelled revolts; Williams battled her body like never before,” Sports Illustrated said.

To wit: a cough and cold that had her vomiting during a match at the Australian Open, which she won anyway; bone bruises in both knees — “the residue of 20 years of pounding” — a right elbow strain and nasty flu at the French Open (again, she won).

In a powerful statement against racism, Williams also returned to play a tournament at Indian Wells, California, for the first time since 2001. That year she was greeted with boos and her family says she even endured racial slurs.

Williams called that return her “greatest moment in tennis.”

“Serena has made a very strong case as not only the greatest tennis player of her generation but of all time, and after the string of performances she put together in 2015, she is one of the most dominant athletes playing today,” Sports Illustrated Group Editor Paul Fichtenbaum said.

“This year was spectacular,” Williams said of her latest accolade.

“For Sports Illustrated to recognize my hard work, dedication and sheer determination with this award gives me hope to continue on and do better. As I always say, it takes a village — not just one person. This is not just an accomplishment for me, but for my whole team and all my fans. I am beyond honored,” she said, according to Sports Illustrated.

Doctors warn: Christmas is happiest but deadliest time of the year

MANILA - More people suffer from heart attack and stroke during the Christmas season, and sufferers are more likely to die during this period than at any other time of year. The phenomenon is called Merry Christmas Coronary, Happy New Year Heart Attack.

This was the warning issued by the Philippine College of Physicians (PCP) Foundation as the holidays brings more traffic, overcrowding, and stress.

“Cold weather is not the only cause of the spiking of cardiovascular cases. Study after study shows the culprits to be holiday stress, pollution, and most of all, food and alcohol binging. Eating and drinking sprees send them to emergency rooms for palpitations and light-headedness - symptoms of ‘holiday heart,’” said Dr. Anthony Leachon, President of PCP Foundation.

“For lucky ones the abnormal heart rhythm, usually atrial fibrillation, fixes itself within 24 hours. But others would require admission for monitoring and in extreme cases, electric shock to normalize heart rates. It’s certainly not a fun way to spend the holidays,” he added.

Deadliest days

A 26-year (1973-2001) charting of 53 million deaths in the US reveals a 5-percent jump in natural-cause demise during the holidays.

Christmas Day was the deadliest, followed by December 26, then January 1, according to the study.

Research by sociologist Dr. David Phillips also noted increases in hospital admissions for cardiac and non-cardiac causes. Published in the Journal of the American Heart Association in December 2004, Phillips study excludes suicides, homicides, and accidents.

Could many of the deaths have been caused by lack of specialist attention, as doctors are on holiday too? No, according to a study of 127,959 patients hospitalized for heart attack in 1994-1996 by cardiologist James Jollis at Duke University.

Treatment was basically the same for all patients during the holidays and off-season. Still, according to Jollis, the 30-day mortality of patients in December is higher, with over-indulgence singled out as the culprit.

Cardiologist Robert Kloner’s 1999 report further discounted mere cold weather and pointed to the “holiday effect.”

Focusing on hospitals in Los Angeles, where winters are milder, he noted that change of diet rather than temperature leads to more heart attacks and strokes.

Merrymakers of all ages tend to eat fatty stuff, with adults drinking more alcohol in parties. Pollutants from wood-burning fireplaces further trigger cardiovascular irregularities.

All three studies by Phillips, Jollis, and Kloner exhibit annual 5-percent rises in heart attacks and strokes -- and deaths – during Christmas.

But the situation in the Philippines seems to be worse.

Leachon, who is a cardiologist in the Manila Doctors Hospital, recalled a 2004-2008 survey of Metro Manila hospitals to show a tripling of emergencies and admissions in Christmastime.

Patients were taken in for heart attack, stroke, and diabetes due to overeating and overdrinking.

Usually about 30-50 cases occur from January to November. But this rose to 153 in December 2004, 163 in 2005, 172 in 2006, 170 in 2007, and 170 in 2008.

Half of the holiday patients died.

So for the coming holidays, Leachon gave these health tips to remind the people on how to prevent life-threatening medical condition:

    Stop smoking.
Eat low-fat low-salt diet. Stick to healthy habits and help your family too.
    Exercise daily for 30 minutes.
    Observe moderate alcohol drinking.
Don’t skip regular appointments with the doctor.
Have enough of your usual medications to allow for holiday business or pharmacy breaks and travel.
Check out the medical facilities where you will be traveling; ask your physician who you could see if you
need a doctor away from home.
If you have symptoms, don’t ignore them.

Nurofen to be pulled in Australia over misleading claims

SYDNEY, Australia - Drug giant Reckitt Benckiser was Monday ordered to pull some of its popular Nurofen painkiller brands off shelves in Australia after a court ruled they made misleading claims.

Australia's consumer watchdog took court action in March, disputing Nurofen packaging that products in its Nurofen Specific Pain range were formulated to treat different types of pain, when the active ingredient was identical.

The Federal Court ruled the British-based multinational engaged in misleading conduct with the main ingredient, 342 milligrams of ibuprofen lysine, the same in all the products with none any better at treating one type of pain than others.

It ordered that Nurofen Back Pain, Nurofen Period Pain, Nurofen Migraine Pain, and Nurofen Tension Headache be removed from retail shelves within three months.

Nurofen in Australia could not immediately be reached but in a statement the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) said Reckitt Benckiser admitted the illegal conduct and consented to the court orders.

"The ACCC took these proceedings because it was concerned that consumers may have purchased these products in the belief that they specifically treated a certain type of pain, based on the representations on the packaging, when this was not the case," chairman Rod Sims said.

"Truth in advertising and consumer issues in the health and medical sectors are priority areas for the ACCC, to ensure that consumers are given accurate information when making their purchasing decisions."

In Australia, Reckitt Benckiser markets and supplies a range of consumer health and household brands, including Nurofen, Mortein, Clearasil, Finish, Airwick, and Gaviscon.

The court also ordered it to pay the ACCC's costs and publish online and newspaper corrections.

A hearing will be held at a later undisclosed date to decide what fine the company faces.

Brandon Vera crowned inaugural ONE heavyweight champion after 1st round KO win

Fil-American MMA fighter Brandon ‘The Truth’ Vera won the inaugural ONE heavyweight world championship on Friday after a quick knockout of Taiwan’s Paul Cheng in the main event of ONE: Spirit of Champions fight card at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Vera stopped his opponent 26 seconds into the first round, dropping Chen with a left hook and a high kick before finishing the fight off with some heavy hammer fists.

The rest of the card saw mixed results for the other Filipinos seeing action in front of their home crowd, with Mark ‘Mugen’ Striegl and former world boxing champion Ana ‘Hurricane’ Julaton losing their respective fights and Eugene Toquero emerging victorious via technical knockout against a Chinese foe.

Striegl was defeated by Australian Reece ‘Lightning’ McLaren via submission (rear naked choke) in the second round of their bantamweight bout. Julaton, meanwhile, dropped a unanimous decision to Russian kickboxer Irina Mazepa in the women’s bantamweight division.

Flyweight Toquero handed Li Wei Bin, who entered the match undefeated in three ONE fights, his very first loss in an MMA cage. He battered his opponent for two rounds before Li failed to answer the call for round three, awarding the win to the Pinoy striking specialist.

Harrison Ford returns ‘home’ in new ‘Star Wars’ film

SYDNEY | He has starred as the U.S. president, swashbuckling Indiana Jones and a heroic CIA analyst, but Harrison Ford says it was when he stepped back on the new “Star Wars” set that he really felt at home.

“It felt like being home, to an extent. It felt good. I like to work. It was fun,” the Hollywood legend said in Sydney where he is promoting the hotly anticipated new installment of the franchise, “The Force Awakens”.

The 73-year-old, who was 35 when the first “Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope” movie was released in 1977, reunites with original cast members Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia) and Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker) in resuming his role as Han Solo.

Ford said while Solo was “much the same in aspect”, new elements of his character would be revealed in the latest addition to the saga, directed by J.J Abrams.

“Well there’s a bit of story that’s been invented that I think is very satisfactory that allows the audience to have an understanding of the — of how the time’s been passed between — in relationships of characters,” he told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

“And then it produces an emotional context which is really very useful. So, Han Solo is much the same in aspect, but if you were to cut through the trunk, you’d see a lot more rings in the tree.”

The veteran — also renowned for headlining the “Indiana Jones” franchise — said he enjoyed working with Abrams, who chose to build plenty of physical sets rather than heavily utilise computer-generated imagery.

“Certainly there are a lot of effects shots which are populated with computer effects. But, having a physical set really is of great advantage for not just the actors who don’t have to pretend that they’re in a place that they’re not,” Ford said.

“I find that it adds a lot to the reality context,” he added in the interview late Wednesday, referring to the ability to experiment with physical sets.

Ticket pre-sales in Australia for “The Force Awakens” has exceeded all previous records, cinema chain Event Cinemas said, including those set by “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2″, “Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part 2″ and “The Avengers”.

The movie is released globally next week.

Doctors prepare for first US penis transplant

WASHINGTON -- Johns Hopkins University doctors are preparing for what would be the first US penis transplant, a procedure that could potentially help hundreds of wounded veterans.

A Johns Hopkins spokeswoman confirmed a New York Times report that the first such operation was planned for a soldier who suffered genital injuries in a bomb blast in Afghanistan.

The 12-hour operation would involve the stitching together of nerves and blood vessels and could restore urinary function and over time, the ability to have sex.

Because the procedure would restore only the penis and not the testes, the patient would not be able to have biological children, according to the report.

According to the Times, more than 1,367 soldiers suffered injury to their genitals between 2001 and 2013 in Iraq or Afghanistan.

Although the procedure is not required to save a life, doctors and Pentagon officials told the newspaper they believe it is worthwhile to deal with the psychological trauma suffered by the soldiers.

The university has been authorized to perform 60 of the experimental surgeries, with organs coming from deceased males whose families have given permission.

Earlier this year, a South African man received the world's first successful penis transplant and reported later he was to become a father.

There was nothing preventing the South African patient from having children because his testicles, where sperm is produced, were not affected.

Pistorius granted bail, will appeal murder conviction

PRETORIA, SOUTH AFRICA - Former Paralympic champion Oscar Pistorius was released on bail Tuesday, as he vowed to appeal against his murder conviction for shooting dead his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in 2013.

South African judges last week found him guilty of murder and overturned his earlier conviction on the lesser charge of culpable homicide for killing Steenkamp, a model and law graduate.

Pistorius, 29, wearing a dark suit, white shirt and black tie, appeared relaxed at the bail hearing in the Pretoria High Court, chatting with his legal team before standing in the dock to hear the judge's ruling.

He was released from jail in October to live under house arrest at his uncle's house in Pretoria after serving one year of his five-year prison sentence for culpable homicide -- the equivalent of manslaughter.

Under the new conviction for murder, he faces a minimum 15-year jail term that may be reduced due to time already spent in jail and as he is a first-time offender.

"The applicant is released on bail of 10,000 rand ($690)," judge Aubrey Ledwaba said, adding Pistorius would remain under house arrest.

Ledwaba said Pistorius would be electronically monitored to track his location, but would be allowed to leave the house at set times with official permission.

The court will meet again on April 18 to seek an update on whether Pistorius's appeal to the Constitutional Court, South Africa's highest court, has been accepted.

Pistorius's bail application Tuesday outlined the basis of his bid to go to the Constitutional Court after the murder conviction by the Supreme Court of Appeal last week.

"(It) impermissibly reconsidered the factual finding made by the trial court that I genuinely and honestly believed that my life and that of the deceased were in danger when I discharged the shots," he argued.

Pistorius spoke in court only to calmly say "I do" when asked whether he made his bail application voluntarily.

No date was announced for his re-sentencing.

A lawyer for Steenkamp's family told AFP that they "understand it is his constitutional right to (appeal), but believe it is a delaying tactic as they do believe that he is guilty of murder."

'Clutching at straws'?

Martin Hood, a criminal lawyer based in Johannesburg, told AFP that Pistorius was now "clutching at straws" by trying to appeal to the Constitutional Court.

"The Supreme Court of Appeal's judgement was clear, simple, lucid,” Hood said.

The Paralympic gold medallist's lawyers had earlier said he cannot afford further legal battles after being left penniless by huge bills.

On the streets outside the court, South Africans voiced their displeasure with Pistorius, saying he was not prepared to take responsibility for his actions.

"He's supposed to get 15 years in jail, he deserves it," said Thomas Mdlule, a 30-year-old selling newspapers on a corner close to the court.

"He must be inside jail, not under house arrest."

Pistorius killed Steenkamp in the early hours of Valentine's Day two years ago, saying he mistook her for an intruder when he shot four times through the locked door of his bedroom toilet with a pistol he kept under his bed.

During his dramatic trial, he denied killing her in a rage, sobbing and occasionally vomiting in the dock as details of his lover's death were examined in excruciating detail.

The murder conviction ruling last week said that it was "inconceivable that a rational person could have believed he was entitled to fire at this person with a heavy caliber firearm".

The double-amputee sprinter, known as the "Blade Runner" because of the prosthetic legs he used on the track, made his first appearance in public last month since leaving jail when he reported for community service at a Pretoria police station.

He killed Steenkamp at the peak of his fame, and he has since lost his glittering sports career, lucrative contracts and status as a global role model for the disabled.

No family members from either side were in court Tuesday.

The bail application revealed Pistorius is studying a business and law course via the Internet at the London School of Economics.

Key bank warns against 'uneasy calm' in global markets

ZURICH - The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) issued a warning Sunday over an "uneasy calm" within financial markets, noting that the global economy remains vulnerable to serious disruptions.

The BIS - known as the central bank of central banks - made the call in its quarterly report which is closely watched by investors.

In August and September, markets were shaken after serious concerns emerged about the health of leading emerging economies, especially China.

Interventions from monetary authorities succeeded in stabilizing markets to a degree, but the head of the monetary and economic division at the BIS, Claudio Borio, cautioned against being lulled into a false sense of security.

"The present calm is fragile," Borio said.

He pointed specifically to slowing capital flows and persistent signs of trouble in Brazil and Russia, even if China appears to have stabilized in part.

"In this context, it's hard to see the current calm as anything other than uneasy," Borio said.

Emphasizing the uncertainty that continues to affect financial markets, Borio noted that investors still remain extremely sensitive to even the slightest surprise in actions from central bankers.

A case in point is the reaction this week to European Central Bank chief Mario Draghi's latest stimulus package, which sparked a broad sell-off from disappointed investors who said the measures did not go far enough.

Senior ECB officials blamed the disappointment on investors who they say misjudged the ECB's expected actions.

Cocaine found near body of ‘grunge’ icon Scott Weiland

NEW YORK | Minnesota police said Friday that they found cocaine in a tour bus near the lifeless body of Scott Weiland, the award-winning lead singer of popular rock act Stone Temple Pilots.

They also arrested Thomas Delton Black — identified by U.S. media as a band member — on charges of drug possession, as the music world paid tribute to what some called a legend of “grunge” music.

Weiland, 48, who also performed with the Velvet Revolver rock group, had admitted in interviews to a longtime struggle with substance abuse.

He was pronounced dead on Thursday, but officials have not said what the cause was.

Condolences poured in for Weiland, who was synonymous with grunge — the alternative rock style that became popular during the 1980s and 1990s, particularly in Seattle and elsewhere on the US west coast.

Weiland, a two-time Grammy Award winner, “passed away in his sleep while on a tour stop in Bloomington, Minnesota, with his band The Wildabouts,” read a posting on the singer’s Facebook page, where fans expressed shock and sorrow.

He had been scheduled to perform with his new band, Scott Weiland & The Wildabouts, when he was found dead in the group’s tour bus.

Bloomington police said that detectives collected evidence from inside the bus that included “a small quantity” of cocaine “in the bedroom where Mr. Weiland was located.”

Detectives also found cocaine in the area occupied by Black, “a traveling member of Weiland’s party.”

STRUGGLE WITH DRUGS, ALCOHOL

Weiland formed Stone Temple Pilots with friends more than two decades ago. Their first album “Core” came out in 1992.

But he suffered from substance abuse issues and left the band.

“Dear Scott,” his former Stone Temple bandmates wrote in a poignant farewell on Facebook, “Let us start by saying thank you for sharing your life with us.

“The memories are many, and they run deep for us. We know amidst the good and the bad you struggled, time and time again.

“You were gifted beyond words, Scott. Part of that gift was part of your curse.

“All of our love and respect. We will miss you brother.”

In 2003, Weiland joined the Velvet Revolver but he quit in 2008, reportedly because of more personal issues.

“Even in his darkest times, we all had hope and love for him,” Velvet Revolver said in a statement.

“His artistry will live on, of that, there is no doubt… It’s just so sad and brutal from any perspective.”

The online music site Consequence of Sound wrote that “Weiland will undoubtedly be remembered as one of alt-rock’s greatest yet troubled frontmen.”

The Recording Academy, which awards the Grammys each year, hailed Weiland as a groundbreaking music innovator.

“Scott Weiland was a grunge icon and a true modern day, rock and roll front man,” the group’s CEO Neil Portnow said.

“From the massive success he achieved as the original lead vocalist of Stone Temple Pilots to his work with rock supergroup Velvet Revolver and his most recent venture with the Wildabouts, Scott’s extraordinary talent and captivating performances will forever live on and inspire legions of rock fans worldwide.”

Weiland discussed his struggle with addiction in a 2011 interview with USA Today.

“I’m still on the verge all the time,” he told the newspaper.

“I swore, of course, never to go back to heroin but I never thought that alcohol would be the real nightmare that it actually is. And it’s legal.”

Weiland had two children with his ex-wife Mary Forsberg. News reports said he married photographer Jamie Wachtel Weiland in 2013.

Several rockers expressed their sorrow on Twitter.

“Sad to hear about Scott’s passing. I hope it wasn’t drugs,” wrote Motley Crue’s Nikki Sixx.

“Extremely saddened that Scott Weiland has passed. Such a gifted performer,” wrote Aerosmith’s Joe Perry.

“Way too soon,” added Lenny Kravitz.

World’s first washable smartphone to debut in Japan

TOKYO, Japan — Tired of those unsightly smudges and other dirt on your bacteria-laden smartphone?

A Japanese firm says it has the solution with what it describes the world’s first smartphone that can be washed with soap and water.

Waterproof smartphones have been on the market for a while. But telecom company KDDI says its new “Digno rafre” phone — to be launched in Japan next week — is the only one that can withstand a soapy bath.

“Our development team washed the smartphone more than 700 times to test its durability,” a company spokesman told AFP.

An online commercial aimed at proving its credentials features a child dropping the phone onto a plate of food topped with ketchup.

His mother assures her shocked family that those red globs are nothing to worry about as she soaps up the phone under a running tap.

The 21,600 yen ($175) gadget is mainly aimed at parents who want to keep their smartphones clean for their small children, a KDDI spokesman said.

But he also cautioned that only certain types of foamy soap could be used on the device, which will only be sold in Japan for now.

Rock singer Scott Weiland, 48, dies in Minnesota: Facebook statement

LOS ANGELES | Rock singer Scott Weiland, the troubled ex-frontman for the band Stone Temple Pilots, died during a tour stop with his new band the Wildabouts in Minnesota, according to a statement posted to his Facebook page late on Thursday.

Weiland, 48, died in his sleep while on tour in Bloomington, in southeastern Minnesota, according to the statement. His death also was reported by TMZ.com and Billboard.

The California-born singer, who had acknowledged a long history of substance abuse, was kicked out of Stone Temple Pilots in 2013 for what his bandmates’ attorney called “destructive behavior.” He also performed with the group Velvet Revolver for a number of years.

Weiland, known for his growling vocals and shock of dyed red hair, came to symbolize the early 1990s grunge era as lead singer and lyricist for the Stone Temple Pilots. Adept at altering his vocal style, he sometimes sang through a megaphone at concerts.

Weiland’s Facebook page gave no details about the circumstances of his death. But celebrity website TMZ, citing an unnamed source connected to the Wildabouts, reported Weiland was found unconscious on the band’s tour bus on Thursday night.

Scott Weiland and the Wildabouts were scheduled to perform on Thursday at the Medina Inn, about 20 miles (32 km) northwest of Bloomington, but the show was canceled, the venue said on its website.

Stone Temple Pilots, also known as STP, was co-founded by Weiland in the late 1980s and went on to score such guitar-heavy hits as “Plush” in 1993 and “Interstate Love Song” the following year.

The band broke up in 2003 but reunited five years later only to collapse in acrimony again in February 2013 when his bandmates – Dean DeLeo, Robert DeLeo and Eric Kretz – forced him out.

Weiland is survived by two children with his ex-wife, Mary Forsberg, who wrote in her 2009 memoir “Fall to Pieces” that there was a time when the couple, while beset by drug addiction, took a limousine together to rehab.

The debut album of Weiland and the Wildabouts, “Blaster,” was released earlier this year.

MASSACRE | 14 dead in California gun rampage, 2 suspects killed

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. --  At least 14 people were killed in a shooting at a holiday party in California on Wednesday, triggering a massive manhunt which ended when police shot dead two heavily armed suspects -- a man and a woman -- on a quiet residential street.

San Bernardino police chief Jarrod Burguan said a third suspect had been detained, but it was unclear whether that person was linked to the shooting, which took place at a center in the city for those with developmental disabilities just before lunch time.

The attack was the latest in a series of mass shootings in the United States, a spiral of violence that has exasperated President Barack Obama, who once again urged Congress to pass tougher gun control measures.

Burguan said authorities were looking at reports that the attack might be linked to a disgruntled employee.

The carnage took place during a holiday event at the Inland Regional Center, a huge facility that employs several hundred people.

"There was some type of dispute or something when somebody left the party, but we have no idea if those are the people that came back," he said, adding that investigators were looking at the possibility that the suspects had left behind an explosive device.

Suspect named

One of the suspects in a mass shooting that left at least 14 people dead in California has been identified as a man named Syed Farook, US media reported.

Public records show that a man bearing the same name worked as an environmental health specialist for San Bernardino County, where the shooting took place.

The Los Angeles Times said that two law enforcement sources had given the suspect's name as Syed Farook.

A man carrying the same name is listed as residing at an apartment complex where the suspects of Wednesday's shooting were tracked by police.

NBC News said another of the suspects was believed to be Farook's brother.

The identity of the woman was unknown.

The attackers were dressed in military-style gear and carried assault weapons as they burst into the auditorium where the killings took place.

David Bowdich, assistant director of the FBI's Los Angeles office, said authorities were not ruling out terrorism.

"I'm still not willing to say we know that for sure," he told reporters. "We are definitely making some movements that it is a possibility."

"We don't know what the motive is at this point," police chief Burguan said. "The information we have is that they came prepared to do what they did as if they were on a mission.

"They came in with a purpose. They came in with the intent to do something."

Investigators in the early evening raided an apartment complex in the nearby town of Redlands, where the suspects were seen before the police chase.

Beyond the 14 dead, the attack also left at least 17 people wounded.

Following the shootout with police, the body of one of the suspects could be seen lying next their bullet-riddled black SUV. The slain suspects were armed with assault rifles and handguns.

Police swarmed the residential neighborhood with officers, guns drawn, going door to door and urging residents to stay in their homes with doors locked.

Deadliest since Sandy Hook

A massive manhunt was launched for the suspects after the late-morning shooting at the Inland Regional Center, which is about an hour's drive east of Los Angeles.

It was the country's deadliest shooting since December 14, 2012, when a young man killed 26 people, including 20 children, at Sandy Hook elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut.

Burguan told reporters the attackers "came prepared to do what they did, as if they were on a mission."

He said that while the motive and identities of the attackers were not yet known, "at a minimum, we have a domestic terrorist type situation that occurred here."

Brandon Hunt, who works at Inland Regional Center, said a banquet for county personnel was being held at the auditorium.

Lavinia Johnson, the center's executive director, said her staff hid and waited inside the building after the shooting to be evacuated by police.

"It was a very traumatic event for us," she told CNN.

Family members of employees at the site rushed to the area on hearing of the shooting and were seen frantically trying to get information about their loves ones.

"It was an hour until I learned my daughter was OK," said Olivia Navarro, 63. "She was frightened when I spoke to her but she seemed calm."

'Stop gun violence'

Obama, who just last week made a plea for action on gun control after three people were killed at a family planning center in Colorado, voiced his anger once more.

"The one thing we do know is that we have a pattern now of mass shootings in this country that has no parallel anywhere else in the world," he told CBS News.

"There are some steps we could take, not to eliminate every one of these mass shootings, but to improve the odds that they don't happen as frequently."

The Democratic presidential frontrunner Hillary Clinton tweeted: "I refuse to accept this as normal. We must take action to stop gun violence now."

Wednesday's shooting, which came less than a week after a gunman killed three people at a family planning center in Colorado, was certain to further stoke the bitter debate about gun control in the United States.

In October, a gunman killed nine people at a community college in Oregon before turning the gun on himself.

According to the site Mass Shooting Tracker, the latest attack brings to 352 the number of mass shootings in the United States so far this year. A mass shooting is defined as four or more people shot in one incident.

Google opens online window on toll of climate change

SAN FRANCISCO, California — As world leaders gathered in Paris on Monday in the hope to stopping catastrophic climate change, Google Maps provided online views of remote locations where wildlife is struggling for survival.

A “Street View” feature at the free online map service has grown from simply showing scenes outside of business or residential addresses to allowing arm chair adventurers to virtually explore mountains, rain forests, ocean depths and more.

Some settings find creatures in dire straits, such as polar bear in the Canadian Arctic appearing to desperately wait for bay ice that doesn’t form because temperatures are too warm.

“From polar bears in the Canadian Arctic, to communities in the Brazilian Amazon, to blue oak trees in Central California, the impacts of climate change are being felt by plants, animals and people across the planet,” said Google Earth outreach program manager Karin Tuxen-Bettman.

“With Street View, you can get a window into some of our world’s changing ecosystems, and learn how nonprofit and other organizations are working to keep our planet healthy.”

Polar Bears International (PBI) borrowed Street View Trekker 360-degree camera and location-pinpointing gear to enhance maps with scenes of polar bears in Manitoba as the sea ice on which they depend vanishes.

PBI incorporated the Street View scenes into its website and a lesson plan for schools to help children learn about the habitat.

Brazilian nonprofit Amazonas Sustainable Foundation (FAS) used Trekker Gear to capture scenes in the Amazon forest and put isolated local communities on the map.

FAS captured imagery from three reserves in the Amazon and uses it for education about rain forest protection and sustainable ecosystem management, according to Google.

- Visualizing climate change -The initiatives aims to make climate change more real for people and inspire them to act by allowing them to virtually explore remote areas, and see beauty lost or under threat due to climate change.

Street View imagery also allows for comparisons over time to show how environments are changing along with the climate.

“Street View is great for visualizing the impacts of climate change, but we’re also using our Street View platform to measure climate data, which can be used by scientists, policymakers, businesses and citizens to drive better decisions,” Tuxen-Bettman said.

Google Earth has worked for several years with the Environmental Defense Fund to map methane leaks from natural gas lines under an array of US cities by equipping Street View cars with special gear, according to Tuxen-Bettman.

Street View cars will begin measuring more pollutants, such as climate change culprit carbon dioxide, in an alliance with environmental sensor network specialty firm Aclima, according to California-based Google.

“Essentially, we’re turning Street View cars into environmental sensing platforms,” Tuxen-Bettman said, noting that they will first be put to work in California communities.
