Swatch prefers go-it-alone route for smartwatch plans

BIEL, Switzerland — Swatch Group is happy to go it alone with a launch next year of watches with “smart” features to compete with so-called wearable gadgets from the big tech companies, a market potentially worth $93 billion.

The world’s biggest watchmaker, which sees the advent of smartwatches as an opportunity rather than a threat, will unveil its new Swatch Touch next summer.

Swatch Chief Executive Nick Hayek said these new watches might allow the wearer to count the number of steps they take and calories they burn. And there will be a few other cool ‘Swatchy’ things on offer via latest Bluetooth technology, he said in an interview at the company’s headquarters in Biel.

“All the big technology firms want to work with us and I don’t rule out that we are or could be collaborating in some areas. But we can also do many things on our own.”
Wearable gadgets, such as smartwatches that allow users to connect to their phone to check emails, make calls or monitor their health, are expected to be the next big thing in the tech world and a potential threat to traditional wristwatch sales.
Apple Inc has just invited media to a “special event” next month, fuelling speculation it might present a much-anticipated “iWatch.”

The possibility of an iWatch launch is partly responsible for Swatch shares losing almost 15 percent so far this year, lagging a 3 percent rise in the European sector.
“For Swatch, this could mean a 2 percent hit to revenue and earnings before interest and tax for each 10 percent share that the iWatch was able to gain in its addressable market,” Bernstein analyst Mario Ortelli said in a study in July. Ortelli has a “market perform” rating on Swatch’s shares.

Other tech companies are working on smartwatches. Google’s Motorola is set to launch a Moto360 smartwatch next week in the United States.

But the spotlight is on Apple after the company poached executives from the fashion, luxury and medtech (medical)industries and registered the trademark “iWatch” in Japan.

Dream team

For many analysts, Swatch and Apple would be the dream team for a smartwatch project, but Swatch has always played down its interest in such a relationship. The argument is that Swatch’s business is selling watches not technology.

“Our first message for customers is the watch. If they like it, they might also be interested in the extra functions,” Hayek said. “It is a problem if you only define a product by its technology. Technology alone doesn’t sell, not in watches.”

His comments highlight the importance of fashion and branding for the development of the smartwatch business.

“(Technology firms) that want to strike partnerships with us also want access to brands. They want (their products) to be more than a commodity,” the CEO said.

Swatch has a well-established list of brands, including its colorful Swatch watches, sporty Tissot and Longines, elegant Omega and hand-decorated Breguet timepieces.

There are already smartwatches on the market from companies like Samsung, Sony Corp and LG Electronics, but these have had mixed reviews.

Experts say even if the technology is cheap and small enough for wearable gadgets, this is not enough for consumers. “Nobody has hit on the right combination of problems a wearable should solve and convinced mainstream consumers,” Avi Greengart, research director at IT research firm Current Analysis, said.

The rewards are potentially huge for whoever comes up with a winning formula. Andrew Sheehy, chief analyst at Generator Research, sees the retail value of wearable Internet-connected devices at $93.1 billion by 2018, versus $4.1 billion in 2014, with smartwatches accounting for about two thirds of the market’s value in 2018.

Tech expertise

Swatch itself is already in the tech business, making microchips, displays and batteries, mainly for third parties, including mobile phone and smartwatch makers.

“We work with many companies, but there’s no reason to shout it from the rooftops,” Hayek said. “EM Marin supplies tiny parts to many, maybe also Apple. We also make batteries for others. But that’s not our core business.”

Swatch’s electronic systems arm includes semiconductor maker EM Marin, battery maker Renata, quartz maker Micro Crystal and its sports timing business. It had sales of 299 million Swiss francs (327.31 million US dollar) in 2013, but the strong franc led to an operating loss of 12 million francs.

“I don’t know if it will turn profitable this year, that depends on the dollar,” Hayek said.

Almost 500 people work at EM in Marin, about a half-hour drive from Biel, and another 500 at sites worldwide.

“Low-power and low-voltage microchips are our specialty. The Swatch Touch, for example, is the only battery-powered device to have a touch screen that is always active because its power consumption is so low,” Michel Willemin, head of EM Marin, said.

EM Marin supplies components and Renata long-life batteries for Garmin’s Vivofit fitness band that monitors distances walked and calories burned.

“Fitness bands are a trend,” Hayek said. “They are selling like crazy in the U.S., but our Swatch and Tissot brands still have double-digit sales growth there. People wear the band on the other wrist and often take it off again after a few weeks.”

In India, rice replaces ice in bucket challenge

NEW DELHI - The famous "ice bucket" challenge is inspiring thousands of Indians to follow suit, but with a twist - they are replacing ice with rice in a bid to help the country's vast population of poor, hungry people.

The challenge, going viral on social media, involves donating a bucket of rice to someone in need and clicking a picture to share online, with a tag #RiceBucketChallenge, to raise awareness.

Started by 38-year-old journalist Manju Latha Kalanidhi in the southern city of Hyderabad, the movement's Facebook page defines it as a "local challenge for local needs" and has clocked more than 52,000 'likes' so far.

The inspiration was drawn from the "ice bucket" challenge, in which people pour a bucket of ice-cold water over their heads to encourage donations for research into Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, a neurodegenerative disease. Celebrities such as software tycoon Bill Gates and tennis great Roger Federer have participated.

"I felt (the ice bucket challenge) was a little bizarre ... hunger is a disease anybody would connect with," Kalanidhi told Reuters.

Kalanidhi's project has started to draw mass support. Students of the Indian Institute of Management in the southern state of Kerala posted a video after donating rice, while budget airline AirAsia India said its chief executive and senior management will participate on Monday.

Mass hunger, much of it poverty-induced, continues to haunt India. The country last year ranked 63rd on a list of 78 countries tracked by the International Food Policy Research Institute's Global Hunger Index. China ranked sixth.

Tackling poverty is high on new Prime Minister Narendra Modi's agenda. On Thursday, he launched a banking-for-all scheme that he said should end "financial untouchability" and help lift people out of poverty.

India is the world's second-biggest rice consumer, with reserves of 21.2 million tonnes of the grain by July 1. It was the world's biggest rice exporter last year.

FIBA World Cup: Gilas Pilipinas falls just short of overtime upset of favored Croatia

The Philippine national men’s basketball team came close to shocking upset victory in their introduction to the world stage after giving Group B favorite Croatia all it could handle in an 81-78 overtime loss in their opening contest of the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Seville, Spain.

Andray Blatche bounced back from a rough first half to finish with 28 points and 12 rebounds while gunner Jeff Chan added 17, including four threes, to lead a gallant Gilas Pilipinas stand.

Gilas came back from eight points down in the fourth period to go into overtime. Blatche scored all seven of the Philippines’ points in OT but fell just short near the end.

Blatche gave Gilas the lead, 75-73, with two minutes left in the extra period but Croatia got a big basket from 7-foot-2 center Ante Tomic and some immaculate free throw shooting from Bojan Bogdanovic to restore a four-point lead, 79-75.

But Blatche wasn’t done, hitting a three with just 5.4 seconds remaining to open the door ever so slightly for Gilas but could not get the job done in the end.

The Filipinos fell behind early after Croatia scored 13 unanswered points in the opening period to open up a 17-4 lead.

With Blatche struggling, missing six of his first seven shots, and the outside shots not falling, the Philippines limped to a 23-9 deficit after the opening 10 minutes.

But they played some trademark Philippine basketball in the second quarter.

Marc Pingris brought a spark early while Gilas coach Chot Reyes matched Croatia’s size with a Blatche and June Mar Fajardo combination in the frontcourt to stem the tide until the Gilas shooters finally got going.

Chan knocked down the first three-pointer for the Philippines and Jimmy Alapag wowed the crowd with a successful four-point play from a few steps behind the three-point line.

Chan closed out with another three that barely beat the buzzer to cap a 7-0 run for the Filipinos.

The Philippines trailed by just six, 37-31, at the half with Blatche, who shot 3-for-13 in the first half, Chan and Pingris leading a balanced Gilas offense with six points apiece.

The Philippines’ naturalized star did much better in the third, scoring eight points on 3-for-4 shooting as he gave a glimpse of his full offensive arsenal.

He pump faked his defender and stretched in for a layup plus the foul early in the period and later scored five straight points on a three and a two as he helped lead the Philippines to within four, 50-46.

After a dunk from Croatian big man Luka Zoric, Jayson Castro brought the team to within three points, 52-49, before getting some tough breaks to end quarter.

Castro, who was knocked off balance, was whistled for a technical foul for flopping. Croatia’s Krunoslav Simon hit both free throws and Damir Markota beat the buzzer with a three to give the Europeans a 57-49 lead entering the fourth.

True to its battlecry of ‘Puso’, Gilas refused to go away in the fourth.

They traded baskets with Croatia but still trailed by eight points, 64-56, halfway through the period before making their move.

Chan hit another three-pointer, Pingris toughed it out for two underneath and Blatche connected on another trey to tie the game at 64-apiece.

Zoric hit two free throws to give Croatia a 66-64 lead but Chan was fouled taking a three from the corner and he took care of all three attempts to give the Filipinos its first taste of the lead, 67-66, with 2:49 remaining.

Blatche followed it up with a jumper that gave them a 69-66 advantage with 2:20 left on the clock.

But Croatia got a big three from Simon to tie the game and Saric scored on a putback to give them back the lead at 71-69.

Castro, though, came up big for the Filipinos, driving and scoring with 39 seconds left to ensure the game would go to an extra period.

The scores:
Croatia (81) – Bogdanovic 26, Simon 12, Saric 10, Tomic 8, Markota 5, Ukic 5, Lafayette 4, Rudez 4, Zoric 4, Babic 3.

Gilas Pilipinas (78) – Blatche 28, Chan 17, Pingris 10, Castro 6, De Ocampo 5, Alapag 4, Tenorio 2, Norwood 2, Fajardo 2, Lee 2, Aguilar 0.

Quarterscores: 23-9, 37-31, 57-49, 71-71 (reg.), 81-78 (OT).

Kraft issues voluntary recall of some American Singles cheese product

NEW YORK - Kraft Foods Group Inc said on Friday it is voluntarily recalling 7,691 cases of some varieties of its Kraft American Singles as a precautionary measure after a supplier failed to store an ingredient correctly.

The Northfield, Illinois-based company said the recall affects four varieties of Kraft American Singles Pasteurized Prepared Cheese Product. The recall is for products with "Best When Used By" dates of Feb. 20, 2015, and Feb. 21, 2015.

A supplier did not store an ingredient in accordance with Kraft's temperature standards. While unlikely, this could create conditions that could lead to premature spoilage and food-borne illness, the company said.

Kraft said that any of the product in question should not be consumed and should be returned to the store where purchased for an exchange or full refund.

Kraft said it has had no consumer illness complaints for the product associated with the recall.

The cheese was produced at Kraft’s Springfield, Missouri, facility.

Apple to unveil ‘iWatch’ on September 9: report

SAN FRANCISCO — Apple will unveil an “iWatch” in September with the maker of the iPhone finally embarking on its much-rumored foray into wearable computing, technology news website Re/code said Wednesday.

The California tech giant is expected to merge style and innovation, along with sensors and computing power, in a wrist-worn device that links wirelessly to iPhones or iPads.

Apple is believed to be planning a September 9 event at which it will introduce the iWatch, along with new-generation iPhone 6 smartphones with increased screen sizes.

The company has not sent out invitations to such an event, nor — as is standard Apple practice — has it commented on reports it will even take place.

Apple’s next-generation iPhones are rumored to have screen sizes stretched to 4.7 and 5.5 inches and have faster processors.

Apple typically updates its product cycle in the second half of the year, getting a lift from holiday sales.

Last year it unveiled the iPhone 5S and the lower-priced iPhone 5C in September, getting record sales at the launch.

Apple is tuning a new operating system which allows for mobile payments and includes a health platform, which could mesh nicely with an “iWatch” for tracking activity, sleep, pulse and more.

The system iOS8 is expected to be in the new iPhones.

GSK Ebola vaccine fast-tracked into U.S., UK and African trials

An experimental Ebola vaccine from GlaxoSmithKlineis being fast-tracked into human studies and the company plans to build up a stockpile of up to 10,000 doses for emergency deployment, if results are good.

Britain's biggest drugmaker said on Thursday the research was being accelerated with funding from an international consortium, reflecting mounting concern over the worst-ever outbreak of the disease in West Africa that has killed more than 1,500 people.

The candidate vaccine, which is being co-developed with the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH), is expected to be given to healthy volunteers in Britain and the United States from around mid-September, with the program then being extended to volunteers in Gambia and Mali.

California to require anti-theft ‘kill switches’ on smartphones

SAN FRANCISCO — The bill would be the strongest attempt yet by a U.S. state to fight smartphone theft, which accounts for more than half of crimes in several of the state’s large cities.

“Our efforts will effectively wipe out the incentive to steal smartphones and curb this crime of convenience, which is fueling street crime and violence within our communities,” said Democratic state Senator Mark Leno, the bill’s author.

Under the new law all smartphones sold in the state after July 2015 will come pre-equipped with technology allowing them to be shut down remotely in the event of theft.

The bill received wide support from California prosecutors and law enforcement agencies that hoped it could help reduce smartphone thefts.

According to the National Consumers League, handheld devices were stolen from 1.6 million Americans in 2012. In California, smartphone theft accounts for more than half of all crimes in San Francisco, Oakland and other cities.

Other states experiencing a rash of smart phone thefts have considered similar measures, and Minnesota passed a theft-prevention law in May. California’s new law, though, will go further, requiring manufacturers to notify consumers that the technology is available on their phones, hopefully prompting consumers to enable the kill switch.

The wireless industry removed its opposition to the bill after Leno agreed to postpone its effective date until July of 2015, the senator said.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus wins Emmy — and a ‘Breaking Bad’ kiss

LOS ANGELES, August 26, 2014 (AFP) – Julia Louis-Dreyfus picked up outstanding lead actress in a comedy series at the Emmy Awards on Monday — and got more than she bargained for.

The “Veep” star, resplendent in a red dress that has already gained widespread popularity on the Twitter world after her striking appearance on the red carpet, engaged in a full-on kiss on the lips with “Breaking Bad” star Bryan Cranston as she went up to fetch her statuette.

Cranston, up for best lead actor in a drama at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, sat down and wiped his lips with his fingers after the apparent re-enactment of their kiss during a joint appearance on long-running series “Seinfeld.”

“Um, yeah he was on ‘Seinfeld,’” the flustered actress said when she got to the microphone. Cranston had portrayed a dentist on “Seinfeld” from 1994 to 1997.

The four to five-second kiss drew loud applause — and a Twitter frenzy, where “Julia Louis-Dreyfus” and “Veep” were soon trending.

It was Louis-Dreyfus’s third consecutive Emmy in the political comedy.

Jim Parsons (“The Big Bang Theory”) was named best lead actor in a comedy series for his portrayal of a brilliant scientist.

Amazon snaps up live video startup Twitch for $970 million

SAN FRANCISCO — Amazon.com Inc snapped up live-streaming gaming network Twitch Interactive for about $970 million in cash, reflecting Chief Executive Officer Jeff Bezos’ resolve to transform Amazon into an Internet destination beyond its core retail operations.

The move, announced by the two companies on Monday, is the largest deal in Amazon’s 20-year history and will help the U.S. e-commerce company vie with Apple Inc and Google Inc in the fast-growing world of online gaming, which accounts for more than 75 percent of all mobile app sales.

The acquisition involves some retention agreements that push the deal over $1 billion, a source close to the deal told Reuters.

“Twitch will further push Amazon into the gaming community while also helping it with video and advertising,” Macquarie Research analyst Ben Schachter said in a note.

Twitch’s format, which lets viewers message players and each other during live play, is garnering interest as one of the fastest-growing segments of digital video streaming, which in turn is attracting more and more advertising dollars.

The deal, expected to close in the second half of the year, is an unusual step for Amazon, which tends to build from within or make smaller acquisitions. Tech rival Google was earlier in talks to buy Twitch, which launched slightly more than three years ago, one person briefed on the deal said.

Neither Amazon nor Twitch would discuss how the deal came together or comment on Google’s interest.

In an interview, Twitch Chief Executive Officer Emmett Shear said the startup contacted Amazon because its deep pockets and ad sales expertise would allow the startup to pursue its strategic objectives more quickly.

“The reason why we reached out to Amazon, the reason I thought working for Amazon, having Twitch being a part of Amazon, would be a great idea for us (because) they would give us the resources to pursue these things that we honestly already want to pursue and they’d let us do it faster,” Shear said.

Ethan Kurzweil, a partner at Bessemer Ventures, which has backed Twitch since its earliest days, said Amazon’s expertise in developer platforms through Amazon Web Services gave it a window into Twitch’s potential growth.

“They understand the power of engaged developer platforms,” he said, noting Twitch’s popularity with game developers and publishers was as important as its popularity with consumers.

Bessemer provided Twitch an introduction to Frank Quattrone, a banker at boutique investment bank Qatalyst Partners, with a view to “catalyzing interest in Twitch,” Kurzweil said.

Quattrone advised Amazon on its 1997 initial public offering.

Twitch raised $20 million in funding last September from game publisher Take-Two Interactive Software and firms such as Bessemer Venture Partners and Thrive Capital.

Other venture backers include Alsop Louie Partners and Draper Associates.

More than 55 million unique visitors viewed more than 15 billion minutes of content on Twitch in July.

Some video game live casters on Twitch have embedded links to the Amazon’s online store. Analysts said the deal may result in more product tie-ins and a deeper integration with Amazon Instant Video and Amazon devices like the Kindle Fire tablet and recently launched Fire TV set-top box.

Twitch and Amazon did not disclose details on new retail opportunities for Amazon through Twitch’s network of gamers.

“We have lots of ideas we’ve discussed, there’s a lot of interest and a number of things we can pursue,” Michael Frazzini, VP of Amazon Games, said in an interview.

Lea Salonga takes Ice Bucket Challenge, calls out Aga, Sarah

Responding to Urs Buhler of the operatic pop vocal group Il Divo, singer Lea Salonga posted her own Ice Bucket Challenge video on YouTube Thursday night.

Unlike several other celebrities who had accepted the challenge earlier this week, the 43-year-old Broadway star and “The Voice of the Philippines” coach opted not to put her own spin on the charity campaign that had thrust the neurodegenerative disease ALS (amyothropic lateral sclerosis) into the mainstream conversation.

Instead, Lea shared a personal reason why the challenge was more than just a bandwagon to her. Before being doused with ice-cold water by her husband Rob Chien, she confessed that an uncle of Chien’s had died of ALS “not so long ago”.

“It is out of love for him that we’re both doing this. Well, I’ll be the one drenched, and he’ll be the one doing the drenching,” she quipped.

Before the ceremonial dousing, Lea called out dear friend and “Glee” star Darren Criss, her former and future leading man Aga Muhlach, and her fellow “The Voice” coaches Apl.de.Ap, Bamboo, and Sarah Geronimo.

Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon Reportedly Sign Confidentiality Agreement

Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon apparently will not say much about their marriage trouble to public. According to a recent report by TMZ, the pair whose marriage is currently on the rocks have signed a confidentiality agreement which bans them from revealing anything about their separation.

The report, however, suggests that Carey has more power in the agreement. The "My All" singer reportedly is allowed to announce the separation under her terms. Meanwhile, the host of "America's Got Talent" will face severe financial penalties if he says a word.

The multi-talented star previously confirmed that he and Carey were living separately and he reportedly would reveal no more. During an outing on Thursday, August 21, Cannon completely ignored a paparazzo who asked whether rumors of them getting divorced were true.

"We have been living in separate houses for a few months," Cannon previously revealed to Yahoo! Insider. The star, who has been married to his singer wife for six years, added, "My main focus is my kids." The pair have 3-year-old twins Moroccan and Monroe.

Ouya scores Xiaomi partnership to take games to China

SAN FRANCISCO — U.S video game service Ouya is turning to Asia to capture the growth that has eluded the startup on its own home turf.

The Santa Monica, California-based firm has partnered with Xiaomi Inc to take its games to Chinese living rooms via the smartphone maker’s new streaming boxes and “smart” TVs, an Ouya executive and a source at Xiaomi close to the deal told Reuters.

Xiaomi, which in three years became China’s top smartphone seller ahead of Apple Inc and Samsung, harbors ambitions beyond mobile gadgets. Last year, it expanded into the TV and set-top box business with its “MiBox” and “MiTV.”

Ouya Chief Executive Julie Uhrman said details are still getting hashed out but it’s likely Ouya will get a dedicated channel on Xiaomi software installed on those devices, on which gamers can shop for and download a selection of its independently developed games later this year, Uhrman said.

Xiaomi will likely commit to marketing Ouya games, she said.

“For the likes of Xiaomi’s MiTV, its set-top boxes and other Android set-top boxes that are entering the market, this could be a turning point..in bringing great content and developers to gamers and into a region that they have never had access to before,” Uhrman told Reuters.

Ouya, which raised funds on crowdfunding site Kickstarter, began selling a $99 game console based on Google Inc’s Android software last year. But sales were disappointing.

This year, Ouya started marketing its software as an app through which developers sell games on other hardware makers’ devices. But the company, which has over 40,000 developers and more than 900 games on its platform, has sealed few partnerships, such as with Mad Catz Interactive Inc to stream games onto its M.O.J.O console.

Whether the Chinese take to gaming on TVs remains to be seen. But its deal with Xiaomi, which models itself on Apple, hands the startup a chance to distribute its content in a fast-growing video game market.

Unlike games on Apple and Google mobile devices, games developed for Ouya are designed to work on TV sets with controllers, similar to the Xbox and Playstation. Ouya and Xiaomi are discussing launch titles and marketing now, Uhrman added. The developers, Ouya and Xiaomi will share revenue, she said without elaborating.

China is the world’s third biggest gaming market, where revenues grew by more than a third to nearly $14 billion last year. The government’s move in January to allow Microsoft, Sony Corp and Nintendo Co to sell consoles has re-kindled interest in gaming hardware.

Chinese telecom equipment maker ZTE Corp for instance has tied up with game developer The9 to release the “Fun Box” console.

“The whole industry is still in a very early development stage,” Uhrman said. “There is an opportunity for both” Xiaomi and Ouya.

Steve Ballmer steps down from Microsoft board

SAN FRANCISCO — Former Microsoft chief Steven Ballmer on Tuesday said he is stepping down as a member of the software giant’s board of directors.

Ballmer made his decision public a month after his successor, Satya Nadella, announced unprecedented job cuts at the US technology firm as it worked to adapt to a “mobile first, cloud first” world.

“Given my confidence and the multitude of new commitments I am taking on now, I think it would be impractical for me to continue to serve on the board, and it is best for me to move off,” Ballmer said in a publicly posted letter to Nadella.

“I bleed Microsoft – have for 34 years and I always will.”

Nadella, in a responding letter posted online, thanked Ballmer for his contributions to Microsoft and said he supported the decision to leave the board.

Ballmer said he would be devoting time to new endeavors that include teaching and the Los Angeles Clippers NBA team he acquired earlier this month.

Ballmer paid a record $2 billion for the Clippers.

Microsoft last month announced its biggest job cuts ever as new chief executive Nadella called for a new focus at the US tech giant while integrating the Nokia phone division.

The company said it would slash 18,000 jobs from its global workforce over the next year, the majority from the Nokia handset unit acquired this year.

Nadella, who became CEO earlier this year, seeks to reinvigorate a company that had been the world’s largest but which has lagged in recent years as Google and Apple have taken leadership of the tech sector.

West Africa Ebola death toll rises above 1,200; Liberia fights to halt spread of virus

MONROVIA/GENEVA - Liberia battled on Tuesday to halt the spread of the Ebola disease in its crowded, run-down oceanside capital Monrovia, recording the most new deaths as fatalities from the world's worst outbreak of the deadly virus rose above 1,200.

The epidemic of the hemorrhagic disease, which can kill up to 90 percent of those it infects, is ravaging the three small West African states of Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea, and also has a toehold in Nigeria, Africa's biggest economy.

As the Geneva-based World Health Organization rushed to ramp up the global response to the outbreak, including emergency food deliveries to quarantined zones, it announced that deaths from it had risen to 1,299 as of Aug. 16, out of 2,240 cases.

Between Aug. 14-16, Liberia recorded the most new deaths, 53, followed by Sierra Leone with 17, and Guinea with 14.

On a more hopeful note, the WHO expressed "cautious optimism" that the spread of the Ebola outbreak in Nigeria, Africa's most populous nation where four deaths out of 12 confirmed cases have been recorded since July, could be stopped.

It also described the situation in Guinea, where the virus made its first appearance in West Africa in December, as currently "less alarming" than in Liberia and Sierra Leone.

The WHO said it was working with the U.N.'s World Food Programme (WFP) to ensure food delivery to 1 million people living in Ebola quarantine zones cordoned off by local security forces in a border zone of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

"Providing regular food supplies is a potent means of limiting unnecessary movement," it said in a statement.

Besides infection in border zones, Liberia is fighting to stop the spread of the virus in the poorest neighborhoods of its capital, such as the West Point slum where at the weekend a rock-throwing crowd attacked and looted a temporary holding center for suspected Ebola cases, 17 of whom fled.

As fears of wider contagion increased - Ebola is spread by contact with the bodily fluids of infected persons - Liberia sent police to track down the fugitive suspected cases.

"We are glad to confirm that all of the 17 individuals have been accounted for and have now been transferred to JFK Ebola specialist treatment center," Liberia's Information Minister Lewis Brown told Reuters on Tuesday.

He added that after meetings with religious and community leaders, a task force was being set up to go door-to-door through West Point, a labyrinth of muddy alleys, to explain the risks of the disease and the need to isolate infected patients.

"I know that Monrovia is really of concern to WHO," WHO spokeswoman Fadela Chaib said in Geneva.

Lewis said the Liberian authorities were considering imposing even tougher restrictions on movements.

Liberia and Sierra Leone's weak health systems have been overwhelmed by the multiplying numbers of cases and deaths.

WHO has said it is coordinating a "massive scaling up" of international assistance to the worst affected countries.

But a Liberian health ministry report for Aug. 17 said its Ebola-hit Lofa County had stopped burials due to a lack of body bags. "Absolutely no body bags," the report said.

It said the ministry warehouse had only three pairs of rubber boots remaining and no more bottles of hand sanitizers.

"I am sorry to say the government has lost the fight against Ebola. It is out of control now," said student Samuel Zorh.

On Friday, the Liberian and Sierra Leonean governments and a medical charity chided the WHO for its slow response, saying more action was needed to save victims threatened by the disease and hunger.

"IMPROVEMENT" AFTER RARE DRUG USED

The WHO declared the West African Ebola outbreak a "public health emergency of international concern" on Aug. 8, triggering global alarm as countries stepped up precautions and testing.

Reflecting this, emergency services in Berlin on Tuesday cordoned off a job center and took a woman with Ebola-like symptoms including high fever to hospital.

The U.N. health agency this month gave the green light to use untested pharmaceuticals to treat Ebola patients.

In Monrovia, three African healthcare workers were given the rare experimental ZMapp drug, which has already been used on two American aid workers being treated in the United States after being evacuated from Liberia with Ebola.

Lewis said the three Africans treated with ZMapp were showing "remarkable signs of improvement".

However, the manufacturer of the drug, California-based Mapp Biopharmaceutical, has already said its scarce supplies have been exhausted. Officials have cautioned the public not to place too much hope in untested and scarce treatments.

As part of the increased international response, WFP is stepping up emergency food deliveries to the quarantined areas, which include severely-affected cities such as Gueckedou in Guinea, Kenema and Kailahun in Sierra Leone and Foya in Liberia.

Fears of the disease and quarantine measures like military and police roadblocks have stopped farmers from reaching their fields, and as a result food output has dropped, raising fears that a famine could set in on top of the deadly illness.

"We think that even beyond the control of the outbreak there will be severe food shortage," said Gon Myers, WFP country director for Sierra Leone. The extra food deliveries would be trying to reach 400,000 people in Sierra Leone alone.

The WHO has told countries affected by the outbreak to screen people departing at airports, seaports and major land border points and stop any with signs of the virus.

It has argued against further travel restrictions, but several international and regional airlines have canceled services to Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea.

Shipping companies operating on Africa's west coast, as well as port authorities, were also on high alert.

"We sense a certain amount of concern out there in the industry," Ian Millen, Chief Operating Officer of Dryad Maritime, a maritime operations company, told Reuters, but he said he had not seen widespread cancellations of services.

Nigeria said on Monday its confirmed Ebola cases had reached 12, up from 10 last week, but five had almost fully recovered. Four people have died from the virus in Lagos, where it was transferred by a U.S. citizen who arrived by plane from Liberia.

Although WHO said the situation in Lagos looks "reassuring", Cameroon closed its borders with Nigeria on Tuesday as a precaution.

Ferguson police come under gunfire, arrest 31 in racial unrest

FERGUSON - U.S. police said early on Tuesday they came under heavy gunfire and arrested 31 people during another night of racially charged protests in Ferguson, Missouri, sparked by the fatal shooting of an unarmed black teenager by a white policeman 10 days ago.

Demonstrations, mostly peaceful but with spasms of violence by smaller groups, have flared since Michael Brown, 18, was shot dead while walking down a residential street on August 9.

State Highway Patrol Captain Ron Johnson, briefing reporters on Monday's night's violence, said "our officers came under heavy gunfire" in one area.

"Not a single bullet was fired by officers despite coming under heavy attack," he told a news conference. Riot police had confiscated two guns from protesters and what looked like a petrol bomb. Four officers had been injured.

Johnson separately told CNN that two people were shot within the crowd, but not by police, and were taken to hospital. There was no immediate word on their condition.

The violence has captured headlines around the world, raising questions about the state of U.S. race relations nearly six years after Americans elected their first black president.

"This has to stop. I don't want anybody to get hurt. We have to find a way to stop this," said Johnson, an African-American who grew up in the area and who took over security efforts after the mostly white local force was accused of using excessive force against blacks.

An overnight curfew has been imposed and the National Guard, the U.S. state militia, has been deployed in the St. Louis suburb of 21,000 people to stop looting and burning that have punctuated the protests.

President Barack Obama and civil rights leaders have appealed for calm while a federal investigation into the shooting proceeds.

"While I understand the passions and the anger that arise over the death of Michael Brown, giving in to that anger by looting or carrying guns, and even attacking the police, only serves to raise tensions and stir chaos," Obama told a news conference on Monday (Tuesday in the Philippines).

Google considering YouTube, Gmail accounts for kids: reports

Google Inc is considering allowing online accounts for children under the age of 13 and give their parents control over how the service is used, according to media reports.

Google has been working on a version of YouTube, its video-sharing site, for youngsters and is considering other child-friendly accounts such as its Gmail system, the Financial Times reported, citing a person familiar with the matter.

Internet companies such as Google and Facebook Inc do not offer their services to children under 13, but it is tough to catch users who sign up by providing false information.

A U.S. law called Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act, or COPPA, imposes strict controls on the collection and use of information about children under 13.

Google’s effort is partly driven by the fact that some parents are already trying to create accounts for their children and the company wants to make the process easier and compliant with the rules, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing a person familiar with the effort.

Google’s move was first reported by technology news website The Information.

Google spokesman Peter Barron declined to comment on what he called “rumors and speculation”.

US teen held in Bali suitcase killing assaulted in custody - lawyer

DENPASAR - An American teenager suspected of killing her mother, whose body was found in a suitcase in Bali, has revealed she is pregnant and claims she has been assaulted in custody, her lawyer said.

Heather Mack, 19, who denies any involvement in her mother's death, also alleges police on the Indonesian resort island have threatened to deprive her of food and water if she does not speak to them, her US-based lawyer Michael Elkin said in a statement.

He added that she was around two months pregnant.

However Bali police rejected the claims, insisting that all detainees were treated well.

The half-naked, battered body of Sheila von Wiese Mack, 62, was discovered on Tuesday last week stuffed in a blood-stained suitcase in the boot of a taxi outside the exclusive St. Regis hotel in the upscale Nusa Dua resort area.

Her daughter and her daughter's boyfriend, Tommy Schaefer, 21, who had been on holiday with the victim, were arrested a day later after fleeing the hotel.

Police say they have strong evidence against the pair, and are leaning towards charging them with premeditated murder, which carries a maximum penalty of death in Indonesia.

However, Elkin has insisted claims that Heather Mack was involved in her mother's death are false.

"Said allegations and reports are not true and will be disproven as the investigation continues or at the conclusion of trial, if formal charges are indeed filed," he said in a statement.

The daughter and her boyfriend have been named suspects in the case, but under the Indonesian legal system would only be formally charged in court at the start of a trial.

In a statement sent to AFP late Saturday, Elkin said his client "has been seriously physically assaulted while in custody", without giving further details, adding that she has been "pregnant for approximately two months".

"Heather was told that if she does not speak to the police she will be deprived of food and water," the statement went on.

"Heather was told that unless her attorney arrives within days she will be deprived of food and water and that he will be denied access to meet with her," it added.

The suspected killers have refused to talk to Indonesian investigators and insisted on having American legal representation. Elkin said he plans to head to Bali soon. He said that he was not representing Schaefer.

But Djoko Hari Utomo, police chief in the Balinese capital Denpasar, insisted: "All those detained here are well treated."

"I do not want to comment on something which doesn't even exist."

An FBI agent has travelled to Bali to help in the investigation, police on the resort island said Saturday. A doctor also revealed new details of the killing, including that the victim's neck had been broken.

Household cleaning hacks you should know

MANILA, Philippines - Having a healthy household does not just mean eating the right food, but having your house germ-free as well. While we exert too much physical effort in cleaning, we also exert too much money on buying cleaning products. Be pragmatic and avoid overspending on household supplies. You probably didn't know it, but here are some cheap, convenient, and easy-to-do cleaning tips that would help you stretch your budget and patience in cleaning even further.

White Vinegar
Aside from cooking with vinegar, you may also use it to keep your dishwasher, windows, floors, microwaves and refrigerators extra clean. Pour an equal amount of vinegar and water on a cup and dip a cloth or sock. Run it over and use another cloth or sock to remove the dampness.

Ice Cubes
Every few weeks, toss in a handful of cubes in your sink. Add some orange, or lemon to ward off some stenchy odor.

Newspaper
Don’t throw away your old newspapers. Use it to get rid of garbage grime and crusty dips and drops of garbage juices.  Cover the bottom of your trash can with old newspapers to soak up leaks and odors.

Clay Doh
If you think that clay is only for playtime, think again. Clay Doh can be used to pick up the small pieces of broken glasses and glitters. Just press the clay into the area and the glass or glitters will stick onto it.

Lemons
Utilize the power of citrus to clean your microwave, which becomes smelly most of the time because of the different food heated.  Squeeze lemon juice into a small bowl of water and place in the microwave for five minutes. The fresh scent will eliminate the cooking odors and condensation from the steam makes the random splatters that have hardened easier to remove.

Mouthwash
Aside from killing bad breath, adding a considerable amount of mouthwash to a gallon of water and mop the vinyl and tiles.

Baby Oil
Baby oil helps the dirty water bead roll down the drain faster. Use this to clean your sink, toilet bowl, or tub.

Potatoes
Did you just went on a camping trip? To remove hardened mud on your clothes, especially comforter or blankets, slice a potato in half and gently rub the cut end on to it. Soak the fabric in cool water after before tossing them into the laundry.

Rice
Having a hard time fitting your hands while cleaning a narrow vase? Just pour  two tablespoons of dry rice and half a cup of warm water inside the vase. Shake the vase vigorously while covering it with your hands.  Drain the vase afterwards.

Blow Dryer
Give chandeliers a quick cleaning with a blow-dryer (set on low) or a feather duster. For tougher jobs, fill a spray bottle with one part vodka to five parts water, spritz on fixtures and blow-dry.

Hair Spray
Walls doodled with markers  can be cleaned by misting them with hairspray and wiping them immediately. Crayon on walls on the other hand could be removed by scrubbing with a toothbrush covered with toothpaste. You may also use a damp microfiber cloth with baking soda. Hairspray may also be used to remover lipstick stains on clothes.

Chalk
For those who are not aware, chalk has a powerful absorbing quality. Greasy and oily fingerprints can be removed by rubbing a chalk on walls, even clothes.  Wash it with water after to make it completely grease-free.

Onion
Peel and cut the white onion in half. Rub the onion back and forth over the grates of a hot grill. The onion will deglaze the grates and add a little extra flavor the next time you grill in for some barbecue adventure.

Borough Center for Sight offers new advances in cataract and refractive surgery

Cataract removal is one of the most common and safest surgical procedures worldwide. Until recently, however, cataracts were still manually removed by the eye surgeon with the aid of a phacoemulsification machine. Then, an intraocular artificial implant is then placed inside the eye for visual recovery.

Today, on the other hand, recent advancement in technology has given birth to Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery or LACS. One of the more popular lasers is the LENSAR LASER SYSTEM (LLS).

The LLS features Augmented Reality with 3-D reconstructed view of the eye, helping the surgeon plan and proceed with treatment with unparalleled confidence.

It has the most advanced imaging capability that visualizes the vital parts of the eye before and during the surgical procedure. It is the only laser that uses the Scheimpflug imaging technology and uses the same proven laser technology used in LASIK procedures.

With a slight push of a button, the LLS initiates bladeless corneal incisions, rounded centered capsulotomies and softening of the cataract.

In layman’s terms, LENSAR opens the front covering of the lens, softens the cataract and breaks it down into smaller pieces allowing the surgeon to remove the cataract with ease.

With a perfectly rounded and centered capsulotomy, the surgeon can insert an intraocular implant in the eye with such precision that the patient is assured of lifelong clear vision.

Meanwhile, manual capsulotomies are hard to center and are, more often than not, irregularly shaped that may lead to the decentration of the intraocular lens or IOLs (more importantly for multifocal IOLs), which can result to changes in the quality of vision of patients after cataract surgery.

Borough Center for Sight, one of the country’s premier eye care clinics, with branches in CyberOne Building, Eastwood, Quezon City and at the South Wing of SM Mall of Asia offers Laser Assisted Cataract Surgery. The center has a roster of well trained and experienced eye doctors who can provide expert advice on eye care and surgery.

Borough Center for Eyes also offers Lens Replacement Surgery for those who elect to have their natural lens replaced with an intraocular lens to achieve good quality vision for far, intermediate and reading distances without glasses.

At frontline in fight vs Ebola, a doctor finds grief and inspiration

LONDON -- After a month on the frontline battling Ebola in a hospital in Sierra Leone, the memories that both haunt and inspire British doctor Tim O'Dempsey are of the children.

Many memories of children dying in isolation wards while their parents wailed outside. And one of a small girl who fought her way out of a coma and was reunited with her father.

"Seeing a mother come in with a little baby, and within a few days the baby die -- it's very difficult," he told Reuters. "What you do is just get on with it. There are lots and lots of patients that need to be attended to. Occasionally, entire families would be admitted. You can't stop."

O'Dempsey, a doctor with three decades' experience studying and fighting tropical diseases, was seconded to Sierra Leone by the World Health Organization to help battle the biggest outbreak of the deadly hemorrhagic fever in history.

He ended up as part of a team of between two and four doctors, plus a handful of nurses, caring for 40-60 patients a day with one of the most lethal known diseases.

Kenema hospital's three Ebola wards -- one for suspected cases, the other two for confirmed infections -- had barely 10 or 12 beds each, so patients lay on mattresses on the floors and in the corridors.

Many of the staff themselves became ill, and many died, including the head nurse on the Ebola wards, Mballu Fonnie, and the doctor in charge of the unit, Sheik Umar Khan -- declared a national hero by the government when he passed away last month at 39 after treating more than 100 Ebola sufferers.

Amid the misery, it was the small triumphs that made the work worth doing, like that of a girl aged around six or seven.

‘Stormy course’

"Her father had brought her in, but because he wasn't a suspect case he had to leave, so she was on her own," O'Dempsey said. The girl was soon confirmed with Ebola and moved to the isolation wards.

There, she had "a pretty stormy course" with high fever, vomiting and diarrhea. She slipped into a coma and was close to death.

"But we managed her as best we could, and she came out of her coma, and very, very slowly we were able to encourage her to drink, and then begin feeding her," he said.

"Just before I left -- four weeks later -- I arranged for her to go into a side room so her father could see her and look after her again. I hear that she is getting stronger every day."

Such stories, he said, are important because they encourage people to come forward and seek the medical attention that can save lives and prevent the disease from spreading. They are also a blessing for staff who risk their own lives to provide succor.

"It's quite fantastic to see people convalescent and waiting to be discharged -- walking around the place, joking, singing and looking remarkably well."

WHO Director General Margaret Chan said last week that one of the most important factors in being able to bring the outbreak under control was to ensure healthcare workers were cared for and respected.

"Governments affected need to send a very strong signal that the local healthcare workers' contribution is appreciated, they are properly paid, and security is provided to make sure they can work quietly and do what they are best at," Chan said.

Infected health workers

O'Dempsey saw the struggle faced by local doctors and nurses at first hand.

"When I arrived the nurses had been on strike since the previous day. There were no nurses inside the wards at all, so conditions were really pretty grim," said O'Dempsey. "There was a high infection rate among healthcare workers and nursing staff. It was very difficult for people to see their colleagues becoming ill and in some cases dying."

The death toll in this Ebola epidemic -- the largest and most deadly ever seen -- reached 961 on Aug. 8 from a total of 1,779 cases, according to WHO data. In the four countries hit so far, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia and Nigeria, the virus has infected some 140 or 150 healthcare workers, killing around 80 of them, WHO Director General Margaret Chan said last week.

Many epidemiologists and infectious disease specialists -- including O'Dempsey, a senior lecturer at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine -- fear it could get far worse.

"It's unlikely we've seen the peak," he said. A lot more needs to be done to improve and expand treatment facilities to ensure all patients who need to be contained and isolated can be, and to make sure fear and stigma were not made worse, he added.

Nurses and other health workers were not only exhausted and fearful for their lives, he said, but are also shunned by family, friends, landlords and other members of the community, some of whose traditional beliefs lead them to see Ebola infection as a punishment for doing something wrong.

"We need enough nurses who are properly trained and we need clinicians able to offer support and expertise," he said. "You can't have nurses working 12, 14 hours a day, seven days a week for months without a break."

NASCAR star Tony Stewart kills young driver in race crash

CHARLOTTE – Tony Stewart has pulled out of a second race as a police probe continues into the bizarre incident in which the US stock car star struck and killed an up and coming driver.

The 43-year-old Stewart, who missed Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at the Watkins Glen International track, has withdrawn from a non-NASCAR race Saturday in Plymouth, Indiana.

“We at Plymouth Speedway extend our deepest condolences and prayers to the family of Kevin Ward, Jr. and thoughts and prayers to Tony Stewart and his family. Tony Stewart will NOT be racing at Plymouth Speedway this Saturday,” race officials said in a statement on Monday.

Stewart, one of the most popular drivers in American stock car racing, struck and killed 20-year-old Kevin Ward Jr. during another non-NASCAR race on a dirt track Saturday night at Canandaigua Motorsports Park.

There is no word yet from Stewart’s team, Stewart-Haas Racing, whether Stewart will compete in a NASCAR race at Michigan International Speedway on Sunday.

No charges have been laid, but US law enforcement authorities said Monday they are continuing their investigation into the fatal accident.

Ontario County Sheriff spokesman Philip Povero told reporters Monday they are seeking more video footage of the crash as part of their investigation.

“We know at this point that a fatal crash did occur, and we are taking as much time as we can to gather every piece of factual information that may exist that will help us clearly identify the cause of the tragedy,” Povero said.

“We are basically trying to see if there are any other video recordings that may have been made on Saturday night that could help us.”

The incident happened near turn two at the halfway point of a 25-lap Lucas Oil Super Sprint Features dirt race.

Stewart first bumped Ward’s car and knocked it out of the race. On his next time around, Stewart’s vehicle then collided with Ward, who had gotten out of his car and was walking down the track pointing his finger in the direction of Stewart.

As the car passed by Ward it appeared to rev and then fishtail, hitting Ward and dragging him along the track for several metres.

Ward, of Port Leyden, New York, began competing in Go Kart racing at the age four in 1998. He began sprint car racing in 2010 and won his first career sprint car feature in June 2011.

Stewart has a history of dust-ups with other drivers. Two years ago after a crash he walked onto a track at Bristol Motor Speedway in Tennessee and threw his helmet at Matt Kenseth’s car.

When Stewart competed in an event at Canandaigua in July 2013, he caused a crash that involved 15 drivers.

Rory McIlroy wins dramatic shootout to capture PGA title

LOUISVILLE – Rory McIlroy put himself among golf’s greatest legends Sunday by winning his fourth major title in dramatic fashion, capturing the PGA Championship in a shotmakers’ showdown at rain-softened Valhalla.

Three weeks after winning the British Open, the 25-year-old from Northern Ireland rallied on the back nine to take his second major victory in a row and third consecutive triumph overall in impressive fashion.

“Amazing. Incredible. I’m not sure I’ll ever have another summer like this,” McIlroy said. “I’ve got a lot of golf left to play this year, but I have to enjoy what I’ve just done.”

McIlroy fired a three-under par 68 in the final round to finish 72 holes on 16-under par 268 and edge five-time major winner Phil Mickelson by one shot with Sweden’s fourth-ranked Henrik Stenson and American Rickie Fowler two adrift.

McIlroy’s hat-trick of victories after the British Open and a World Golf Championships event last week give him the longest win streak since Tiger Woods completed a run of five in a row in 2008.

McIlroy became the fourth-youngest man to win his fourth major — trailing only Young Tom Morris, Woods and Jack Nicklaus — and has taken four of the past 15 majors contested.

“I try and put all this talk aside every time it comes up, but Tiger and Jack are two of the most successful players in our sport of all time,” McIlroy said.

“I’m on a nice track at the minute and I’m on a nice path. I’ve still got a long way to go, but to be in their company at this age is very special.”

McIlroy is the first man to win two majors in a row or in the same year since Ireland’s Padraig Harrington took the British Open and PGA in 2008.

Combined with German Martin Kaymer’s US Open triumph in June, McIlroy’s double means Europeans have won three of four majors in a year for the first time.

McIlroy took the Wanamaker Trophy, even grabbing the lid as it fell during the awards ceremony, and a $1.8 million (1.34 million euro) top prize.

Eagle lets McIlroy soar

A backstretch trophy battle worthy of anything the Kentucky Derby horses at nearby Churchill Downs ever produced came on a course weakened by 2.2 inches of rain over three days.

Bogeys at the third and sixth holes dropped McIlroy from the lead and even after a birdie at seven he made the turn three off the pace set by penultimate pair Mickelson and Fowler.

At the par-5 10th, McIlroy smashed his second shot 274 yards and made a seven-foot eagle putt to pull within one stroke of the leaders.

“That was the turning point in the whole tournament for me,” McIlroy said. “I struggled on the front nine and then to get myself within one of Rickie and Phil, I felt like I had a really good chance.”

US left-hander Mickelson found the rough at 16, bounced his bunker shot over the hole and left a 10-foot par putt just short for bogey.

McIlroy found a fairway bunker at 17 but hit to 10 feet and curled in the birdie putt for a two-shot lead.

An earlier rain delay had forced the players to race nightfall to finish, with dark clouds looming as the drama reached the par-5 18th hole.

McIlroy found a greenside bunker with his approach, made while Mickelson and Fowler were on the green in the dimming light.

“It was a classy move for those guys to let us come up because they didn’t need to,” McIlroy said. “They could have let us just stand there and wait in darkness and make it a little bit more difficult. True sportsmanship. They called us up and it was a classy move.”

Mickelson missed an 70-foot eagle bid but tapped in for birdie to pull within one of McIlroy while Fowler settled for par to end his title hopes.

McIlroy blasted out to 34 feet, left a birdie putt inches short and tapped in to win.

Defeat hurts for US duo

“It was good for me to get back in the thick of it, to compete in big tournaments,” said Mickelson, whose only prior top-10 effort this year was a January runner-up finish at Abu Dhabi.

“I’m disappointed in the outcome. Had I been able to finish those last five or six holes strong, could have totally flipped the way I look at this year.”

Fowler, the US and British Open runner-up who also shared fifth at the Masters, matched Nicklaus and Woods as the only players to finish in the top five at all four majors one year, the first since Woods did it in 2005 but also the first to do so without a win.

“This is probably the one that hurts the most for me with the majors this year,” Fowler said. “I just wish I could have given myself a couple of better looks on the last couple holes.”

Zynga whacked as losses widen

SAN FRANCISCO — Zynga said Thursday it wants to perform better, as the social games firm reported losses widened and revenues sank in the past quarter, sending its share price tumbling.

The loss for the past quarter deepened to $62.5 million, compared with a deficit of $15.8 million in the same period a year ago.

Revenues dropped sharply to $153 million in the three months ending June 30, from $230 million a year earlier.

“While our quarterly financial results were in line with our guidance range, we aspire to do better and improve execution across our business,” chief executive Don Mattrick said in a statement.

“We are purposefully competing, and while we would like to be further along, we believe we are making the right decisions to grow our business and unlock long-term shareholder value.”

Shares in Zynga tumbled nearly eight percent to $2.69 in electronic trades after the news, reflecting investor disappointment.

Zynga also lowered its outlook for 2014 “primarily to reflect the delayed launch of new games and features,” according to its earnings statement.

The company rose to stardom by tailoring games for Facebook, but has struggled as the two firms have grown apart and Zynga seeks new sources of revenues.

The San Francisco company announced it is launching a new line of sports games under the brand “Zynga Sports 365.”

Zynga said it signed a licensing deal with the National Football League and NFL Players Inc. to use real NFL teams and athletes, “creating an authentic team manager football experience that can be enjoyed anytime, anywhere.”

Study links depression to late-night social media use

SYDNEY - A groundbreaking study by Australian and Chinese researchers has found a link between depression sufferers and the late night use of social media tools.

The joint study by the Australia National University (ANU) and China's Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT) analyzed data from Chinese social media site Weibo to predict potential depression among users.

The results, released Wednesday, suggest the lure of social media in the silence of night is a magnet for people who suffer from depression, betraying a far higher level of activity on social media between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m. compared to other social media users.

"We found that in comparison to the control group, individuals with predicted Major Depression Disorder were more active on social media between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m.," said co-researcher Jin Han, a PhD student with the ANU National Institute for Mental Health Research.

Use of negative words

"Secondly, these people have a specific linguistic pattern. They are more likely to use negative words, such as death, depression, life, pain, and suicide."

Han said she hoped the study could be used to help organizations which work with people suffering depression.

"The information could be provided to organizations such as Lifeline who support people with depression," she said.

"It could also be used to identify people who may be showing signs of depression but are less likely to reach out for help."

Charmaine Yabsley, a social media and health expert writing for national health insurer BUPA, said that there are growing concerns for Australians online.

"Social media can be a wonderful tool, helping us source information and communicate with friends around the world. But what happens when we use social networking sites to be, well, less social and physically active in real life? For many of us, social media has become part of our everyday lives. We tweet, blog, update, and upload regularly -- for work and personal reasons," he said.

Around 80 percent of the Australian population is online, ranking the nation as having one of the highest Internet penetration rates in the world.

According to a recent Nielsen survey of 5,000 Australians aged 16 years and over, close to half of all online Australians participate in social media sites on an almost weekly basis, spending around 22 hours on it every week.

Almost 70 percent of Australians log on many times a day.

The upshot for youth in a technological world is that it is easy to feel non-existent without being online.

Positive effects of social media

Han presented the findings of the study during the two-day Studying the Chinese Internet workshop jointly organized by the ANU College of Arts and Social Sciences and the ANU College of Asia and Pacific.

The other researchers are Pengyu Li, Dr. Guang Yu, and Xianyun Tian from HIT.

However, Chris Tanti, chief executive officer of Headspace (Australia's National Youth Mental Health Foundation), believes social media can also play an effective supporting role in human mental health.

"The strong sense of community and belonging fostered by social networking services has the potential to promote resilience among young people," he said, "While there are concerns (about social media), the good news is that young people are developing the skills to cope."

Whatever the outcome, the collaboration between Harbin and Canberra is an excellent example of how higher learning centers of excellence can reach out across cultures to forward the discussion and provide further knowledge and protection for the complexities of youth across the social media-scape.

ANU's Associate Professor Robert Ackland, who oversaw the workshop, said the event had been enormously successful in bringing together people who also work at the intersection of computer science and China studies.

"One of the things the ANU is known for is its focus on Asian Studies, and I think we are very well positioned to be a leader in this field of study," he said.

Andrea Myles, founder of the China Australia Millennial Project, said Australia needs to make more of such cross-cultural research.

"Be it health, social media or the myriad challenges facing youth from China and Australia, if we co-create new solutions to issues facing both of our nations then we will fulfill our obligations to all young people looking to take us ahead in the ' Asian century,’" Myles said.

Death toll from Ebola in W. Africa hits 887: WHO

ABUJA, Nigeria — The doctor who treated a man who flew to Nigeria and died of Ebola now has contracted the disease, authorities said Monday, presenting a dire challenge to Africa's most populous nation as the regional toll for the outbreak grew to 887 dead.

As Nigerian health authorities rushed to quarantine others who had been exposed, a special plane left Liberia to evacuate the second American missionary who fell ill with Ebola. Nancy Writebol, 59, is expected to arrive in Atlanta on Tuesday, where she will be treated at a special isolation ward.

The second confirmed case in Nigeria is a doctor who treated Patrick Sawyer, the Liberian-American man who died July 25 days after arriving in Nigeria from Liberia, said Nigerian Health Minister Onyebuchi Chukwu.

Three others who also treated Sawyer now show symptoms of Ebola and their test results are pending, he said. Authorities are trying to trace and quarantine others in Lagos, sub-Saharan Africa's largest city of 21 million people.

"This cluster of cases in Lagos, Nigeria is very concerning," said Dr. Tom Frieden, director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Controls and Prevention, which is dispatching 50 experienced disease control specialists to West Africa.

"It shows what happens if meticulous infection control, contact tracing, and proper isolation of patients with suspected Ebola is not done. Stopping the spread in Lagos will be difficult but it can be done," he said.

The World Health Organization announced Monday that the death toll has increased from 729 to 887 deaths in Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia and Nigeria.

Cases in Liberia jumped from 156 to 255, WHO said, as the government ordered that all Ebola victims must now be cremated because of rising opposition to burials in neighborhoods around the capital. Over the weekend, police were called in amid a standoff over whether health authorities could bury nearly two dozen victims in a neighborhood on the outskirts of the capital, Monrovia.

Sierra Leone marked a national stay-at-home day Monday in an effort to halt the disease's spread. A documentary film of the first outbreak of the Ebola disease in Congo was being shown intermittently throughout the day by the national broadcaster.

The emergence of a second case in Nigeria raises serious concerns about the infection control practices there, and also raises the specter that more cases could emerge. It can take up to 21 days after exposure to the virus for symptoms to appear. They include fever, sore throat, muscle pains and headaches. Often nausea, vomiting and diarrhea follow, along with severe internal and external bleeding in advanced stages of the disease.

"This fits exactly with the pattern that we've seen in the past. Either someone gets sick and infects their relatives, or goes to a hospital and health workers get sick," said Gregory Hartl, World Health Organization spokesman in Geneva. "It's extremely unfortunate but it's not unexpected. This was a sick man getting off a plane and unfortunately no one knew he had Ebola."

Doctors and other health workers on the front lines of the Ebola crisis have been among the most vulnerable to infection as they are in direct physical contact with patients. The disease is not airborne, and only transmitted through contact with bodily fluids such as saliva, blood, vomit, sweat or feces.

Sawyer, who was traveling to Nigeria on business, became ill while aboard a flight and Nigerian authorities immediately took him into isolation upon arrival in Lagos. They did not quarantine his fellow passengers, and have insisted that the risk of additional cases was minimal.

Nigerian authorities said a total of 70 people are under surveillance and that they hoped to have eight people in quarantine by the end of Monday in an isolation ward in Lagos.

Tracking down all the people who came into contact with Sawyer and his caregivers could prove difficult at this late stage, said Ben Neuman, a virologist and Ebola expert at Britain's University of Reading.

"Contact tracing is essential but it's very hard to get enough people to do that," he said. "For the average case, you want to look back and catch the 20 to 30 people they had closest contact with and that takes a lot of effort and legwork ... The most important thing now is to do the contact tracing and quarantine any contacts who may be symptomatic."

Marvel’s ‘Guardians’ rockets to $94 million domestic debut

“Guardians of the Galaxy,” Walt Disney Co’s offbeat space adventure featuring extraterrestrial misfits and a talking raccoon, made $94 million in ticket sales this weekend, setting a record for an August film opening.

The film’s strong beginning, however, isn’t likely to jumpstart a lackluster summer box office season.

The 3D movie, which stars lesser-known characters in Disney’s Marvel comic book universe, added $66.4 million from international markets, for a global debut of $160.4 million, Disney said on Sunday.

“Guardians” outgunned last weekend’s leader, the science-fiction thriller “Lucy” that collected another $18.3 million in sales at domestic theaters, according to estimates from Rentrak.

“Lucy” stars Scarlett Johansson as a woman with a super-powered brain.

“Get On Up,” a biography of the soul singer James Brown, was third with $14 million in its first weekend in theaters.

“Guardians” stars an ensemble cast that includes Zoe Saldana, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper and Chris Pratt. After positive reviews, the film was the year’s biggest Thursday night opening with $11.2 million in sales starting with 7 p.m. shows.

Even before the film’s opening, Walt Disney said it was planning a sequel for release in July 2017.

Head of distribution for Walt Disney Studios Dave Hollis attributed the strong performance of “Guardians” to a combination of momentum started by “Transformers: Age of Extinction” in June, skillful marketing, and strong reviews.

“It starts with a great movie, and certainly the marketing was inspired,” Hollis said.

Disney had marketed the film’s lighter moments in trailers and commercials, including a machinegun-firing raccoon, to expand its popularity beyond traditional Marvel movie fans.

The movie features a soundtrack of music from the 1970s, including the songs “Hooked on a Feeling” and “Spirit in the Sky.”

“Transformers: Age of Extinction,” just passed $1 billion in global box office returns, according to Paramount Pictures.

“Guardians” performance, which beat Hollywood forecasts of a $65 million to $80 million opening, are not likely to energize the summer box office, however, as ticket sales are currently running 18 percent behind last year, according to Rentrak.

“It doesn’t end it but it’s certainly a step in the right direction,” said Rentrak’s senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian about the slump. It only gave the overall summer box office a two percent lift, he said.

“Hercules,” starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as the legendary muscle man, was fourth for the weekend with $10.7 million.

“Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” was fifth with $8.7 million. The film has totaled more than $189.3 million in sales in U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Rentrak.

“Lucy” and “Get On Up” were released by Universal, a unit of Comcast Corp.

Fox, a unit of Twenty-First Century Fox, distributed “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.” “Hercules” and “Transformers: Age of Extinction” were released by Paramount Pictures, a Viacom unit.
