Michael Jackson ‘still loves me,’ says freed doctor

LOS ANGELES | Michael Jackson’s former doctor Conrad Murray said Wednesday that the late pop icon still loves him, and would be appalled by fans who attack him over the star’s 2009 death.

In his first public comments since being released from jail on Monday, Murray said he never harmed the “Thriller” icon, who died from an overdose of the anesthetic propofol administered by the medic.

“I loved Michael very much. I’m a fan of Michael probably more than most,” he told the celebrity news website TMZ.

The 60-year-old, who was interviewed through the window of his car, had noticeably darker and thicker black hair than in the first photos of him shortly after he left jail, in which he looked significantly grayer than during his 2009 trial.

Murray, who was looking after Jackson as he rehearsed in Los Angeles for a series of comeback concerts in London, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and jailed for four years. He served two, let out early for good behavior and due to prison overcrowding.

Asked Wednesday about criticism he has faced, he said Jackson “would be appalled, absolutely appalled .. to see what has happened. All of his fans who judge me .. I think Michael will basically tell them to take a look in the mirror.”

And he added: “Not that he doesn’t care about them. But I don’t think he would say that you should judge lest ye be judged. Because Michael knows the truth. The truth is, I never harmed him.

“Michael loves me no less than he loved me then, and I know he loves me today like I love him. He was a man of love, like I am a man of love. And I’ll continue to give love.

“For all of those who try to fester hate in their hearts, I’m not going to go there. I don’t need to do that. I will give love. I will give respect and I will remain dignified.”

NSA intercepts Google, Yahoo traffic overseas - Washington Post report

SAN FRANCISCO -- The National Security Agency has tapped directly into communications links used by Google and Yahoo to move huge amounts of email and other user information among overseas data centers, the Washington Post reported on Wednesday.

The report, based on secret NSA documents leaked by former contractor Edward Snowden, appears to show the agency has used weak restrictions on its overseas activities to exploit major US companies' data to a far greater extent than realized.

Previously reported programs included those that allowed easy searches of Google's, Yahoo's and other Internet giants' material based on court orders.

But since the interception in the newly disclosed effort, code named MUSCULAR, occurs outside the United States, there is no oversight by the secret intelligence court.

The Post said the operation gained access to a cable or switch that relayed the traffic through an unnamed telecommunications provider.

"We are outraged at the lengths to which the government seems to have gone to intercept data from our private fiber networks, and it underscores the need for urgent reform," said Google chief legal officer David Drummond.

Google said it had not been aware of the program, although it recently began speeding its efforts to encrypt internal traffic.

Like other companies, Google and Yahoo constantly send data over leased and shared or exclusive international fiber-optic telecommunication lines as they synchronize information.

The newly disclosed program, operated jointly with the United Kingdom's Government Communications Headquarters, or GCHQ, amassed 181 million records in one recent 30-day span, according to one document reported by the Post. It could not be learned how much of that included material from US residents, how the agency redacted data on them or how much of the information was retained.

'Valid foreign targets only’

An NSA spokesperson said in a statement the suggestion in the Post article that the agency relies on a presidential order on foreign intelligence gathering to skirt domestic restrictions imposed by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act and other laws "is not true."

"The assertion that we collect vast quantities of US persons' data from this type of collection is also not true," the statement said. "NSA is a foreign intelligence agency. And we're focused on discovering and developing intelligence about valid foreign intelligence targets only."

Asked at an event in Washington about the latest report, NSA Director General Keith Alexander said that he had not read it but that the agency did not have unfettered access to the US companies' servers.

"I can tell you factually we do not have access to Google servers, Yahoo servers," Alexander said at a Bloomberg Government conference. "We go through a court order."

He did not directly address whether the agency intercepts such traffic in transit. The NSA is known to tap undersea cables.

A Yahoo spokeswoman said, "We have strict controls in place to protect the security of our data centers, and we have not given access to our data centers to the NSA or to any other government agency."

Yahoo in January will begin encrypting users' email as it moves to the company, but it declined to say whether it would go further and keep email encrypted as it moves within Yahoo.

The report is likely to add to growing tensions between the US intelligence establishment and the tech companies, which have been struggling to assure customers overseas that they need not fear US spying.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy said he would ask for an administration briefing on the program because millions of US residents could have had their communications monitored daily.

"I will be asking whether this report is accurate, what legal authority the government is using, and how they are protecting the privacy rights of law-abiding Americans," the Vermont Democrat said.

Saudi issues new regulations on HSWs

MANILA, Philippines -- Saudi Arabia has issued regulations listing the rights and obligations of migrant household service workers and their employers, the Department of Labor and Employment said Thursday.

Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz said Saudi Arabia approved last week Resolution No. 301, or the Household Regulation on Service Workers and Similar Categories.

“I am very much pleased that Saudi Arabia has issued its new regulations on the employment of foreign HSWs,” Baldoz said.

The resolution is an offshoot of an agreement between the Philippines and Saudi Arabia on a standard employment contract for household workers.

The new regulations, said Baldoz, “will certainly boost the protection for our HSWs and enhance their welfare.”

Under the new regulation, HSWs have the following obligations:

render the work agreed upon and do her best in the performance of her work
follow orders of the employer and family members relating to the performance of her work
take care of the employer’s property
not harm the family members, children, and the elderly
keep secrets of the employers, family members, and people living in or visiting the employer’s house
not refuse work or leave the service without legitimate reason
not affect the dignity of the employer and family members and not interfere in their affairs
respect the Islamic religion and observe Saudi regulations applied in Saudi Arabia, and the customs and traditions of the Saudi society
not engage in any activity disadvantageous to the (employer’s) family
On the other hand, employers should:

not impose work on the household service worker unless the work has been agreed upon, and provided the work does not substantially differ from the original work
not impose any dangerous work that threatens the health and safety and the human dignity of the HSW
pay the agreed salary at the end of every month
pay wage and benefits in cash or check to be documented in writing if the HSW does not want the wage or benefit deposited in a bank account
provide appropriate accommodation to the HSW
provide HSW opportunity to enjoy a daily rest of at least nine hours a day
personally attend or send a representative to answer complaint, if any, of the HSW
not ‘rent out’ the HSW
HSWs are also entitled to a weekly rest day, one month’s leave after two years of service, paid sick leave of not more than 30 days, health care according to the rules and regulations of Saudi Arabia, and end-of-service benefits equivalent to one-month salary after four years.

According to Baldoz, the regulations, if violated also carry stiff penalties for both employers and HSWs.

Employers shall be fined 2,000 Saudi riyals and prevented from recruiting HSWs, while HSWs shall be fined 2,000 Saudi riyals and prevented from working in the Kingdom.

Philippine Overseas Employment Administration offices were already instructed to disseminate the information about the new regulations to all HSWs applicants, in coordination with all licensed recruitment agencies.

Baldoz also directed the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration to include in the Pre-Departure Orientation Seminar (PDOS) for HSWs information about the new regulations.

UST signs up PLDT to enhance school's IT facilities

MANILA - The University of Santo Tomas (UST) has tapped Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co (PLDT) to boost the school's Internet connectivity and for its other information and communication technology requirements.

Under the agreement, PLDT ALPHA Enterprise will provide an initial 100 megabytes per second of its premium i-Gate connectivity to facilitate bandwidth-heavy projects and strengthen connections within and between UST and its partners.

“The main purpose of the current subscription is for the educational use of the Thomasian community, alumni, guests, and other partner institutions,” said Engr. Sebastian Raymond A. Mendoza, STEPs Director.
The Santo Tomas e-Service Providers (STePs) is the school's internal network connectivity facility.

"Communications through the Internet using our online resources, like the institution and department websites, will serve as an effective and faster way of information dissemination," he said in a statement.

Other external projects that will benefit from the connectivity enhancements of the university include the online encoding of grades, full implementation of online registration and enrolment, extended webhosting, server co-location services, and many more.  Future campus expansion requirements are also considered in the technical ICT development project.

Asia’s oldest university is also the first to implement a 10G campus backbone cabling and a Cisco model infrastructure from core to access. Its facilities have received ISO 9001:2008 TUV-SUD certification which have been constantly upgraded to cater to the connectivity needs of the campus, making it the biggest bandwidth requirement among local universities.

“We consider many factors in choosing the right Internet service providers that should meet the standards required by the university. Reliable support is the primary reason in considering an industry partner, as support should always be felt and delivered on a timely basis,” said Mendoza.

UST’s IT facilities will benefit from PLDT’s fiber optic network, which spans more than 71,000-kilometers nationwide.

“PLDT has constantly invested in our network to assure our customers of the service and reliability that their organizations need. Our facilities always undergo the necessary upgrades to meet global standards and handle the growing demand for dependable and consistent connectivity,” said PLDT first vice president and head of ALPHA Enterprise Jovy Hernandez.

“We are ready to serve UST with whatever ICT needs that they’d need to benefit the students, faculty members, the administration, and the whole Thomasian community in keeping their global-standards of education,” Hernandez said.

Apple’s iPad Air is a major improvement, the best tablet

Apple Inc has not reinvented the wheel with the iPad Air, but the thinner device, priced higher than many of its competitors, is a major improvement on a successful product, the reviewers wrote on Tuesday.

Writing for the Wall Street Journal, Walt Mossberg called the iPad Air the best tablet he has ever reviewed.

“That isn’t just because of its slimmer, lighter design, but because Apple boasts 475,000 apps optimized for tablet use – far more than any other tablet platform,” Mossberg wrote.

Mossberg said the new iPad weighs just 1 pound, down from 1.4 pounds for the previous top-of-the-line model, the iPad 4, which is being discontinued.

He also credited the iPad Air’s battery performance, saying the new iPad clocked a battery life of 12 hours and 13 minutes, which exceeded Apple’s claim.

The new full-sized iPad goes on sale from Friday and will be priced starting $499.

Damon Darlin of the New York Times said the gadget is a delight to use, with two antennas to pull in Wi-Fi signals faster than the previous versions did.

Reviewer David Pogue, who recently left the New York Times to start a new consumer-tech website at Yahoo, said the iPad Air is “a fantastic leap into the future if you’re upgrading from an original iPad, or if you’ve never owned a tablet before.”

Pogue said the iPad Air is powered by the A7 64-bit chip, which, according to Apple, means smoother animation in 3D games.

“As a nice bonus, all of Apple’s excellent tablet apps – iMovie, iPhoto, GarageBand, Pages, Numbers, Keynote – are free with a new iPad. Since they’re usually $5 or $10 each, that’s a sweet bundle,” Pogue said, before adding “that’s what’s new in the iPad Air.”

However, all three reviewers highlighted that the iPad Air is pricier than many of its competitors.

“Do you need to plunk down $500 or more for an Air if you already have an earlier version of the iPad?,” Darlin asked, calling the improvements on the new device “incremental, not revolutionary.”

Amazon.com Inc’s 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HDX costs $379, Microsoft’s Surface 2 starts from $449, while Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 3 10.1-inch tablet has a suggested retail price of $400.

Pogue said that given the price, an iPad probably does not need replacing every year or even every other year.

Mossberg concluded: “Bottom line: If you can afford it, the new iPad Air is the tablet I recommend, hands down.”

US to levy $35 million fine on Infosys for 'fraudulently' seeking visas for workers

WASHINGTON--The US government plans to punish Indian outsourcing giant Infosys with the largest immigration fine ever for seeking visas fraudulently for workers at big clients in America, the Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday.

Infosys is accused of putting workers on visitor visas, which are much easier and cheaper to obtain than the correct work visas. The fine is expected to be about $35 million, the paper said, quoting people close to the matter.

A probe by the Department of Homeland Security and the State Department concluded that Infosys used easy-to-get B1 visas, which are meant for short business visits, to bring an unknown number of its workers to the United States for long-term stays, the sources were quoted as saying.

The fine will be announced Wednesday, the Journal said.

Infosys would not confirm details of the fine to AFP, but said in a statement earlier this month that it had reserved $35 million, including legal costs, based on talks with the US government over the probe, which was announced in 2011.

An Infosys spokeswoman said on Tuesday that they were "in the process of completing a civil resolution with the (US) government regarding its investigation of visa issues and I-9 documentation errors". She said the resolution had not been finalised.

With the alleged practice, Infosys could undercut competitors in bids for programming, accounting and other work performed for clients, the Journal said.

Infosys is known as an outsourcing company that does India-based computing and other technology services for Western clients, who have included Goldman Sachs Group, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Cisco Systems Inc.

But it also features thousands of US-based employees who develop and install software for accounting, logistics and supply-chain management in the retailing, finance and manufacturing sectors, the Journal said.

Design technology: a catalyst for growth in manufacturing

MANILA, Philippines — As the manufacturing industry continues to flourish, 3D solutions provider Autodesk Inc. showcased how design technology goes beyond the aesthetic development of a manufactured product and raises the level of efficiency, collaboration, and democratization in the manufacturing industry.

In an interview with InterAksyon.com, Chris Lee, industry manager for the manufacturing industry Autodesk, ASEAN region, explained that manufacturing industry players should take advantage of the existing design solutions in order to boost and even expand their respective businesses.

According to Lee, the concept of digital prototyping is revolutionizing the process within the manufacturing industry. Aside from the ability to visualize and effectively simulate the product before it’s manufactured – which in itself renders savings for the manufacturer – it also empowers industry players with a heightened sense of collaboration and efficiency in the workflow.

“What Autodesk has done, through our digital prototyping concept, we have bridged the gap between design, simulation, manufacturing, visualization,” Lee said. “There is no point if you create a good product but you can’t sell it. So the moment your team comes back with the customer response, the marketing team already has access to that information and can start creating collaterals.”

Via Autodesk’s solutions for digital prototyping, various players within the manufacturing workflow can design the product, receive inputs, revise the design and get it ready for the market in less time, and in turn, less cost.

As a complementary tool for Autodesk’s workflow-based solutions, Lee also showcased how the cloud spells a huge advantage for today’s professionals in the industry. “The manufacturing process is now more globalized,” says Lee.

“Information is no longer constrained by location or by territory,” the Autodesk executive added. “You can design on the desktop.”

According to Lee, Autodesk, through its own cloud portal Autodesk Cloud 360, designers and manufacturers can leverage on a platform where they can work together wherever they may be.

Environment friendly

Furthermore, Autodesk moves forward along with the growing sensibilities on environmental sustainability, especially in the manufacturing sphere.

Lee explained that the solutions being offered by the company allows manufacturers to see how environment-friendly the product will be — even a prototype is even manufactured.

“Autodesk has enabled Eco-indicator in our technology,” Lee said. “With this we can track the number of materials in the product that are eco-friendly. When you design a product, you get to know how much or what percentage of a product is recyclable. And when you manufacture that product, you already have the report ready.”

What’s also notable is the growing popularity and accessibility of 3D printing.

Lee pointed out that 3D printing is effectively democratizing the manufacturing industry and expanding the manufacturing capability from the factories to the home.

“Autodesk plays a critical role in democratizing 3D software and allow everyone to be able to do 3D printing,” he emphasizes.

Autodesk offers free consumer applications to enable anyone – even those with no previous technical training – to start developing and designing their own items or products, which they can easily print via a 3D printer.

Lee also shared how this can be helpful in the Philippines.

“It is interesting how manufacturing in the Philippines has grown so drastically,” Lee said.

And with this, local industry players should see this time as an opportune moment to leverage on design solutions to further boost their respective businesses.

Asia's export engine stuck in neutral despite U.S. uptick

HONG KONG - Asia's once-reliable export engine remains stalled two years into a global economic recovery, raising concerns about the region's competitiveness and its ability to motor through the next tough time for emerging markets.

Exports from seven of East Asia's biggest exporters - Japan, China, South Korea, Taiwan,Thailand, Hong Kong and Singapore - grew by just 0.8 percent in the third quarter, according to a Reuters analysis of national trade data, led by a 3.1 percent gain in exports to the U.S. from the same three months of 2012.

The data reinforce a worrying trend in a region where gross exports represent more than a third of its combined economic output: since peaking in 2010 as the global economy rebounded from financial crisis, Asia's export growth has rapidly cooled.

Double-digit growth, common to the past decade, petered out in 2011 and has not recovered.

"There is really no change in the main thing that's going on across Asia - which is no growth in exports the past two years," said Tim Condon, head of financial markets research at ING in Singapore.

"I think it's weak global spending, it's as simple as that."

There is a growing consensus that Asia faces slower growth and more uncertain prospects once the U.S. economy improves to the point where the Federal Reserve begins scaling back five years of radical monetary stimulus.

If exports fail to offset rising interest rates and ebbing global capital flows, economists say, Asia will have to rely on domestic demand to take up the slack - a difficult proposition given aging populations and other structural hurdles.

The failure of Asian exports to rise in tandem with global recovery has sparked a debate among economists about whether Asia might be losing its competitiveness as wages and other costs rise. But Asia's share of U.S. imports, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau and Bureau of Economic Analysis, has been growing since 2002 alongside a steady climb in China's exports since its 2001 entry into the World Trade Organization.

"There's no compelling evidence that the competitiveness of EM (emerging market) Asia's exports has fallen," said Johanna Chua, head of Asia economics and market analysis at Citigroup in Hong Kong. The sluggish recovery in U.S. imports reflects the lopsided nature of the U.S. recovery, she said, one led by housing and shale gas instead of consumer spending or business investment.

"We're not getting a broad-based recovery," said Chua.

Japan's hollowing out

Japan, however, is a different story.

The world's third-largest economy has slowly been losing market share in the United States. Japanese exports fell almost 11 percent to $180.4 billion in the third quarter, leading Asia's export decline.

In local currency terms, Japanese exports climbed nearly 13 percent in the quarter because of a sharply weaker yen over the past 12 months. But the volume of shipments was virtually flat.

And while Japan lost its lead as Asia's top exporter to the United States and Europe a decade ago, it now appears to be losing its edge in China to neighbor and rival South Korea.

Asia's exports to China in the third quarter rose 1 percent, with a 9 percent rise in exports from Korea offsetting an 11 percent decline in exports to China from Japan. Indeed, in the past five years, Korea has edged out Japan as Asia's biggest exporter to China.

That may be a reflection less of declining popularity or competitiveness of Japanese products than a shift of production out of Japan to other production bases in Asia and the United States - the "hollowing out" of Japanese industry.

This phenomenon explains how a weak yen can boost exports in yen and the earnings of Japanese exporters calculated in yen even though shipments from Japan are falling. Japan's exporters are earning more from products sold - and manufactured - overseas.

"Japanese automobiles and general machinery remain competitive and, in fact, Japanese auto sales have increased in the United States this year from last. But exports have not increased as much," said Yasuo Yamamoto, senior economist at Mizuho Research Institute in Tokyo.

"The reason is their continued shift to local production. The weak yen at current levels won't help reverse the trend of hollowing out of industry and is unlikely to boost exports as much as it used to."

S&P 500 ends at record high on Fed hopes

NEW YORK - The S&P 500 closed at another record high on Monday as expectations were high that the Federal Reserve will keep its stimulus in place when it meets this week.

But the overall market was little changed, with the Dow and Nasdaq ending down slightly, after the recent sharp run-up in the stock market lost some momentum.

The S&P 500 has risen 6.4 percent since October 8, when it hit its lowest point during the U.S. government's partial shutdown and the debate over raising the debt ceiling. The benchmark index is up 23.6 percent for the year so far.

Relief over the end of the political impasse and investor expectations that the Fed will keep stimulus measures in place for at least several months because of the 16-day shutdown have propped up prices. Fed policymakers will meet on Tuesday and Wednesday.

"I would like to say it's all about people waiting for the Fed, but I don't know what they're waiting for because I don't expect any change in Fed policy this week, given the fact they pointed out repeatedly the fiscal issues they're cognizant of," said Mark Luschini, chief investment strategist at Janney Montgomery Scott in Philadelphia.

"My concern with the market at this level is that without signs eliciting some evidence the economy is actually strengthening from the pace we've had, the multiple expansion doesn't seem rational."

Shares of Apple Inc rose 0.7 percent to $529.88 ahead of the release of its earnings, expected after the bell. While Apple's advance helped the S&P 500, the consumer staples sector index .SPLRCS, up 1.2 percent, gave the S&P its biggest boost.

A number of traders appeared to be picking up call options on the Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR fund, which rose 1.3 percent, on hopes that the sector will continue to perform well through the end of the year.

The Dow Jones industrial average dipped 1.35 points, or 0.01 percent, to end at 15,568.93. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index gained 2.34 points, or 0.13 percent, to finish at a record 1,762.11. The S&P 500 also posted another lifetime intraday high at 1,764.99.

The Nasdaq Composite Index slipped 3.23 points, or 0.08 percent, to close at 3,940.13.

In extended-hours trading, Apple's shares were flat after recovering from a 5 percent drop following the tech bellwether's results. Wall Street had hoped for a stronger beat on quarterly sales after the iPhone maker predicted in September that its revenue and margins would come in at the high end of its own forecasts.

Apple's stock price has climbed 8.8 percent since the end of August.

Among the latest signs that the economy's momentum may be easing, U.S. manufacturing output barely rose in September and contracts to buy previously owned homes recorded their largest drop in nearly 3-1/2 years, according to economic data released on Monday.

On the down side, Dow component Merck & Co fell 2.6 percent to $45.35 and was one of the biggest drags on the Dow after the company reported a decline in sales of its Januvia diabetes treatment, raising concerns about growth prospects for its biggest product.

Biogen Idec posted a rise in its third-quarter profit and boosted its full-year earnings and revenue outlook, sending the U.S. biotech company's stock up 0.9 percent to $254.43.

Based on Thomson Reuters data through Monday morning, S&P 500 earnings are expected to have risen just 3.4 percent in the third quarter over the year-ago period.

Of the 249 companies in the S&P 500 that have reported earnings so far, 69.1 percent beat analysts' expectations, above both the 63 percent beat rate since 1994 and the 66 percent rate for the past four quarters.

Revenue has been lackluster, however, with growth seen at 2.2 percent for the quarter. Just 53.9 percent have beaten sales estimates, below the 61 percent rate since 2002, but above the 49 percent rate for the past four quarters.

On the acquisition front, Mosaic Co agreed to buy CF Industries Holdings Inc's phosphate mining and manufacturing business for $1.2 billion in cash. Shares of CF climbed 4.2 percent to $218.36 while Mosaic gained 1.6 percent to $46.67.

Hawaii begins debating gay marriage

HONOLULU -- Hawaii started debating on Monday a proposal that would make the popular wedding and honeymoon destination the 15th US state to legalize same-sex marriage, repealing a voter-approved constitutional amendment that banned gay matrimony.

Democratic Governor Neil Abercrombie appeared as the first witness in support of the measure with more than 1,800 people signed up to address the state Senate Judiciary Committee during a special session called by the governor.

The debate this week in Hawaii, which allows civil unions, comes at a time of increasing momentum for gay marriage in the courts, at the ballot box and statehouses across the country.

The governor stressed that the proposal was crafted to address opponents' concerns that legalizing gay marriage would infringe on religious freedom. The proposal exempts clergy and churches from having to perform same-sex marriages.

"Our whole focus has been on trying to accommodate the First Amendment here with respect to people's religious rights, and that's been done in good faith," Abercrombie said.

Hearings in the state House of Representatives are scheduled to open on Thursday.

Democrats hold an overwhelming majority over Republicans in both chambers -- 24-1 in the Senate and 44-7 in the House -- virtually assuring passage of a gay marriage bill.

Momentum

The special session was originally expected to last five days, but there is already talk of the legislature taking two weeks to complete its work.

Abercrombie, who served more than two decades in the US House of Representatives before running for governor in 2010, signed a same-sex civil unions bill into law two years ago and has since been a vocal proponent of gay marriage.

His immediate predecessor, Republican Linda Lingle, vetoed a civil unions bill in 2010.

Just one year ago, only six states and the District of Columbia recognized same-sex marriage. That number has more than doubled since then, due in most cases to litigation over the issue.

Maine, Maryland and Washington state became the first three states to extend marriage rights to same-sex couples by popular vote with passage of ballot initiatives last November.

In June, the US Supreme Court forced the federal government to recognize same-sex marriages performed in states where such unions are legal and upheld a lower-court decision throwing out a state ban on gay matrimony in California.

And last week New Jersey Governor Chris Christie dropped his legal opposition to gay marriage, making his state the 14th to legalize same-sex weddings.

The New Mexico Supreme Court is expected to decide by year's end whether same-sex marriage should be recognized statewide rather than county by county, and the Illinois legislature is also considering the issue.

Gym not for you? Easy home tasks also help heart - study

PARIS - Mowing the lawn or washing the car are among simple activities that can reduce the risk of heart attack or stroke by almost 30 percent in people over 60, researchers said Tuesday.

A study in Sweden found that older people who were physically active around the house stayed healthier longer than couch potatoes -- regardless of whether they also did any kind of "formal" exercise like jogging or going to the gym.

"A generally active daily life was, regardless of exercising regularly or not, associated with cardiovascular health and longevity in older adults," said the study in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.

While the health risks of prolonged sitting and the benefits of regular exercise have both been well documented, the contribution to good health of "non-exercise physical activity (NEPA)" is not fully understood.

For the study, researchers screened nearly 4,000 Swedish 60-year-olds in 1997-99 and tracked their health for an average 12.5 years.

The participants recorded how frequently they performed certain activities, including doing home repairs, cutting the lawn or hedge, car maintenance, going hunting or fishing, cycling, and gathering mushrooms or berries.

The researchers found that people with high levels of physical activity, excluding formal exercise, had a 27 percent lower risk of contracting cardiovascular disease compared with inactive people, and a 30 percent lower risk of death from all causes during the study period.

The results were "not significantly different" from those for people who did do regular formal exercise but had low NEPA levels, the study said.

Those who did both had the lowest risk.

"Promoting everyday NEPA might be as important as recommending regular exercise for older adults" -- boosting individual and population health as the demographic shifts towards an ever-older population in many parts of the world, the study said.

The researchers factored in other lifestyle factors that could influence the results, including alcohol intake, education level, smoking habits, and diet.

And they warned that care should be taken applying the findings in cultures that may have different physical activity habits and levels.

Fans to get sneak peek at new ‘Hobbit’ film in London, NY, LA, Wellington

WELLINGTON | Hobbit fans will get a sneak peek at the second film of the trilogy — “The Desolation of Smaug” — after director Peter Jackson announced a global live presentation next month.

Cinemas in London, New York, Los Angeles and Wellington will be satellite-linked on November 4 for an event including a question and answer session with cast members, Jackson said on his Facebook page.

The time difference means it will be November 5 for Kiwi fans.

Jackson did not say who would be involved, but the official Hobbit website on Monday said cast members would include Orlando Bloom, Evangeline Lilly, Lee Pace, Luke Evans and Andy Serkis.

Additional cinemas will be set up in select locations worldwide where fans can gather to watch the event live. It will also be streamed on the Internet.

Jackson, a New Zealander, said further details on locations and timings would be released in coming days on the official Facebook and Twitter pages.

“The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” is not due to be officially premiered until December 13.

The first film in the series, “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey”, was released in December last year with the final chapter “The Hobbit: There and Back Again” scheduled to come out in July next year.

According to the Hobbit website, production of the the trilogy has so far cost US$561 million. “An Unexpected Journey” took in just over US$1 billion at the box office.

Thousands march in Romania against shale gas, gold mine

BUCHAREST - Thousands of Romanians rallied on Sunday against a controversial Canadian gold mine project and against shale gas exploration, in weekly demos that have turned into one of the country's longest-running protests in years.

In Bucharest, some 2,500 people marched on the government's offices, chanting "Resign!, an AFP reporter saw.

The protest marked the ninth consecutive Sunday that Romanians have taken to the streets to voice their anger over the mine planned by Canada's Gabriel Resources, a project seen as harmful to the environment.

The mine, to be based in the heart of Transylvania, would be Europe's largest opencast gold mine.

Gabriel Resources hopes to extract 300 tonnes of gold with mining techniques requiring the use of thousands of tons of cyanide.

"We want tourism, not cyanide," protesters chanted.

The demonstrators said they were also protesting against plans by US energy giant Chevron to dig for shale gas in eastern Romania using the controversial "fracking" technique they fear might contaminate ground water.

The marchers accused Prime Minister Victor Ponta's administration of betraying his election promises by backing shale gas exploration and the planned mine, despite opposing these projects while in opposition.

Some 1,500 people also took part in protests in the northwestern city of Cluj, while another 500 took to the streets in the village of Rosia Montana, also in the northwest, where the mine is to be based.

Model-TV host Phoemela Baranda reveals 14-year-old daughter

Phoemela Baranda confessed on Sunday a secret she had kept for 15 years — the daughter she had when she was 19.

The model, TV host and actress, 33, made the revelation in an interview on the ABS-CBN program “Buzz ng Bayan”, where was joined by her daughter, Kim.

Baranda said she got pregnant with Kim at the height of her modeling career and made the decision to hide it upon the urging of her mother. They fled to the States on the fourth month of her pregnancy.

She said her mother disapproved of her relationship with her boyfriend at that time, even though he wanted to marry her. She did not identify him.

Baranda tearfully admitted that Kim was raised thinking she was her aunt and, later, her sister. She only told Kim the truth after her mother had passed away in 2009 and Kim was already 11.

Baranda said she lived like a single woman for many years, but her mother’s untimely death became her wake-up call.”Kami ni Kim, inaayos ko ngayon. She’s giving me a chance to fix everything,” she said.

Baranda admitted that she’s still trying to win Kim’s love. “Hindi kami ganun ka-close, sa isat’ isa. But I’m trying my best na makabawi sa lost time,” she said.

She said she decided to introduce Kim to the public because “I owe it to her, to our relatives, and my close friends for lying to them.”

Kim told hosts Boy Abunda, Janice de Belen and Carmina Villaroel that she understood why her mother made that decision to hide the truth 15 years ago.

“Inexplain naman sa akin that they did for security, for her career. I know naman how showbiz is,” she said.

Asked if she was ready for the public attention that will come now that her mother had made this confession, Kim was unfazed. “I think I’m kind of mature enough. Growing up I was raised to be strong,” she replied.

Addressing Baranda, she told her mother, “I appreciate all the things you’re doing for me, all the catching up you’re doing. I know sometimes I’m a rebel, but i love you.”

Kim also said it is not important to her to know who her father is. “My mom is both my father and mother now,” she said.

US tax probe leaves Swiss bankers afraid to travel: report

GENEVA - As a United States hunt for tax evaders and their accomplices gains momentum, many Swiss bankers are afraid to go abroad for fear of arrest, one business leader said in an interview published Sunday.

"In my opinion, some 1,000 Swiss bankers no longer dare to go to the United States, or even travel abroad," Martin Naville, the head of the Swiss-American Chamber of Commerce, was quoted as saying by Le Matin Dimanche weekly.

Swiss banks and industry representatives are increasingly cautioning bankers who have worked with US clients to refrain from travelling outside Switzerland, the paper reported.

Swiss banks are believed to have accepted tens of billions of undeclared dollars from US citizens, though they now refuse such money, and a number of banks are under US investigation.

The US has not made public which individual bankers it is probing, but according to Le Matin Dimanche, about 30 names are on the list.

Recently however, "the United States has proven it can strike where and when it likes, and now with the help of European countries", the paper wrote, describing widespread paranoia throughout the banking industry.

The report comes just over a week after the arrest in Italy of a former high-ranking UBS executive alleged to have helped US customers conceal their assets.

Raoul Weil, the 54-year-old ex-chairman of UBS's global wealth management service, was indicted by a US federal grand jury in 2008 for his alleged role in overseeing the US cross-border business.

The indictment alleges that Weil and co-conspirators helped US customers hide around $20 billion (15 billion euros) in assets from tax authorities.

The Swiss national, who left UBS after the 2008 indictment, has always denied the charges and is reportedly fighting his extradition from Italy to the US.

The Swiss Bank Employees Association told Le Matin Dimanche it was advising all bankers who have regularly visited clients in the US "to abstain from travelling".

And some Geneva banks are urging employees living on the French side of the border to settle in Switzerland instead to avoid problems, one banker who wished to remain anonymous told the paper.

"I don't even dare leave Zurich anymore," said another unnamed banker, who recently found out his name had been handed to US authorities.

Look in the mirror and be honest about what you see

The real art of thinking clearly doesn’t entail adopting someone else’s wisdom. It means resolving the clashes between your own values and daily behavior. The human brain is an intricate thing, bursting with decision-making capabilities that you can’t begin to totally understand. But it’s full of errors, too.

Presented in 99 parts and covering 99 imperfections of human existence, the international bestseller The Art of Thinking Clearly by Rolf Dobelli is a straightforward and accessible look at biases, knowledge, probabilities, fallacies, effects, illusions, syndromes, and anomalies that plague people’s lives and society in general.  It tackles topics like facing up to your “loss aversion,” or your fright of losses more than your desire for gains, your predisposition to underestimate the danger of extreme events,  “obedience” experiments, which revealed participants’ dismal readiness to let authority figures weaken their own moral judgment, or a recount of the oft-cited marshmallow experiment, which concluded that children who can wait become more successful in life.

“The failure to think clearly, or what experts call a ‘cognitive error,’ is a systematic deviation from logic — from optimal, rational, reasonable thought and behavior. By ‘systematic,’ I mean that these are not just occasional errors in judgment but rather routine mistakes, barriers to logic we stumble over time and again repeating patterns through generations and through the centuries,” Dobelli explains. The book is not a how-to on attaining an error-free life; it acts as insurance against what the author calls “too much self-induced unhappiness.” Here are my 21 choices from Dobelli’s 99.

• Awareness of your “circle of competence” is key. If you have to make an important decision about something you’re not an expert on, take the time to think; if the decision is important and you are an expert, trust your intuition; if it’s not important, don’t waste your energy by thinking. Just go with your gut.

• A decision must never be judged purely by its result. This is especially true when randomness or “external factors” play a role. A bad result does not automatically indicate a bad decision and vice versa.

• The more you like someone, the more inclined you are to buy from or help that person. This is what’s called the “liking bias,” which is startlingly simple to understand and yet you continually fall prey to it. It means that you’ve fallen under the influence of the “endowment effect,” where you consider things to be more valuable the moment you own them. In other words, if you are selling something, you charge more for it than what you yourself would be willing to spend.

• Sharing what you know about the world with others is enriching. As you do it, you experience your own discoveries vicariously. It engages you in an educational exploration that brings your most joyful moments, whatever your role is in life. Entertainment, for example, has a valuable place in your life and for the world. Perhaps you wouldn’t replace an engaging novel with a business or trade magazine for bedtime reading. And when you try to care about what’s going on in the world, strive to find truly significant ways to expand your awareness and extend yourself.

• Falling prey to the sunk-cost fallacy can lead to more failure and unhappiness. This is your state of affairs when you stick with a horrible or expensive situation simply because you’ve invested so much time, energy or money in it. If you paid to watch a movie, and then find out it’s awful but you continue to sit in the theater, you are not only wasting the money spent on the ticket, but your time. Assess only the future costs and benefits of your decision, not the sunk costs, when deciding whether to continue or pull the plug on something. That way, you can quickly walk away from bad movies, bad relationships and bad investments.

• Being wary of “confirmation bias” is a sound decision. It makes you embrace information that coddles your existing beliefs, while screening out information that tests those beliefs. It is the mother of all misconceptions, and the tendency to interpret new information so that it becomes compatible with your existing theories, beliefs and convictions. Write down your beliefs, and then resolutely embark to discover information that defies your suppositions.

• Your self-serving bias causes an overestimation of your contributions. This happens whether you are a coworker, a roommate, a husband or a wife. In many instances, you tend to overrate your contributions, but in the same breath, you also tend to slack off the bigger your group gets. An engineer had several men pull individually on a rope and he measured their power. If two men pulled together, they invested 93 percent of the power they had used when pulling individually. When eight men pulled together, they used just 49 percent of their individual power. It’s okay to have people work together in teams, but leaders should figure out ways to measure each person’s individual contributions.

• Systematically overestimating your chances of success constitutes “survivorship bias.” Guard against it by frequently visiting and revisiting the graves of once-promising projects, investments and careers. It is a sad walk, but one that should clear your mind.

• Getting caught up in the introspection illusion is dangerous. If you have reflected on an issue, it can cause you to believe that your views represent the truth. If you deem your views are the truth, you only have three reactions to people who don’t share those views: they are either ignorant of the facts, just plain stupid, or simply evil. To counter such an illusion, “Be all the more critical with yourself. Regard your own internal observations with the same skepticism as claims from some random person.”

• The fallacy of  “it’ll get worse before it gets better” should set alarm bells ringing. But beware: Situations do exist where things dip, and then improve. For example, a career change requires time and often incorporates loss of pay. The reorganization of business also takes time. But in all these cases, you can see relatively quickly if the measures are working. The milestones are clears and verifiable. Look to these rather than the heavens.

• Don’t cling to things. Consider your property something that the “universe” (whatever you believe this to be) has bestowed on you temporarily. Keep in mind that it can recoup this (or more) in the blink of an eye.

• You can’t fight it. Evil is more powerful and more plentiful than good. You are more sensitive to negative than to positive things. On the street, scary faces stand out more than smiling ones.  You remember bad behavior longer than good — except, of course, when it comes to yourself.

• It’s not what you say, but how you say it. Realize that whatever you communicate contains some element of framing, and that every fact — even if you hear it from trusted friend or read it in a reputable newspaper — is subject to this effect, too.

• If you have an enemy, give him information. Perform your best to get by with bare facts; it will help you make better decisions. Superfluous knowledge is worthless, whether you know it or not. As historian Daniel J. Boorstin puts it: “The greatest obstacle to discovery is not ignorance — it is the illusion of knowledge.” And next time you are confronted by a rival, consider killing him — not with kindness — but with reams of data and analysis.

• Whether you like it or not, you are a puppet of your emotions. You make complex decisions by consulting your feelings, not your thoughts. Against your best intentions, you substitute the question, “What do I think about this?” with “How do I feel about this?” So smile, your future is slave to your emotions.

• It’s never just a two-horse race.  If you have trouble making a decision, remember that the choices are broader than “no surgery” or “highly risky surgery.” Forget about the rock and the hard place, and open your eyes to other, superior alternatives.

• First and last impressions dominate. This means that the content sandwiched in between has only a weak influence. Try to avoid evaluations based on first impressions. They will deceive you, guaranteed, in one way or another. Try to assess all aspects impartially. It’s not easy, but there are ways around it. For example, if you’re interviewing, jot down a score every five minutes and calculate the average afterward. This way, you make sure that the “middle” counts just as much as hello and goodbye.

• Last chances make us panic. Let’s say you have long dreamed of owning a house. Land is becoming scarce. Only a handful of plots with sea views are left. Three remain, then two, and now just one. It’s your last chance! This thought racing through your head, you give in and buy the last plot at an exorbitant price. The fear of regret tricked you into thinking this was a onetime offer, when in reality, real estate with a lake view will always come on the market. The sale of stunning property isn’t going to stop anytime soon. “Last chances” make you panic-stricken, and the “fear of regret” can overwhelm even the most hardheaded dealmakers.

• Like all emotions, envy has its origins in our evolutionary past. You are the offspring of the envious. But in today’s world, envy is no longer vital. If your neighbor buys himself a Porsche, it doesn’t mean that he has taken anything from you. When you find yourself suffering pangs of envy, be reminded: “It’s okay to be envious — but only of the person you aspire to become.”

• Purge yourself of the “illusion of attention” every now and then. Confront all possible and seemingly impossible scenarios. What unexpected events might happen? What lurks beside and behind the burning issues? What is no one addressing? Pay attention to silences as much as you respond to noises. Check the periphery, not just the center. Think the unthinkable. Something unusual can be huge; we still may not see it. Being big and distinctive is not enough to be seen. The unusual and huge thing must be expected.

From here, you can start applying the lessons you learned almost instantly from Dobelli’s list. Surely they will be useful navigational tools in decision-making as you’re faced with overwhelming choices, too many resolutions and assessments, or plain overthinking. But before you take the plunge on anything, “look in the mirror — and be honest about what you see.”

McDonald's drops Heinz ketchup

WASHINGTON - McDonald's said Friday it was dropping ketchup king Heinz as a supplier of the key hamburger condiment, citing management changes at Heinz that put the company closer to rival Burger King.

McDonald's said it was ending a relationship of over 40 years as it axed Heinz from its supplier list.

"As a result of recent management changes at Heinz, we have decided to transition our business to other suppliers over time," it said.

In February US investment star Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway together with Brazil's 3G Capital took over Heinz in a $28 billion deal.

That move brought Heinz closer to Burger King, which is controlled by 3G.

The change would not be a large blow to Heinz. McDonald's said it only used Heinz ketchup in two US markets, Minneapolis and Pittsburgh, as well as some foreign markets.

McDonald's said in a statement that it would work with Heinz "to ensure a smooth and orderly transition of the McDonald's restaurant business."

The company said they "are confident that there will be no impact to our business, our customers and our great tasting food at McDonald's."

US music legend Quincy Jones sues Michael Jackson estate

LOS ANGELES - Music impresario Quincy Jones, credited with producing some of Michael Jackson's biggest hits, has sued the singer's estate for $10 million, US news reports said on Saturday.

Jones filed a $10 million breach-of-contract lawsuit in connection with Michael Jackson projects released after the singer's death, the Hollywood Reporter wrote.

The entertainment industry Bible reported that Jones filed his suit Friday in Los Angeles against Sony Music Entertainment and MJJ Productions, a song company controlled by Jackson's estate.

Jones, a legendary producer who has won 27 Grammy Awards during a half century in the music business, produced Jackson's biggest hits, including "Off the Wall," "Thriller" and "Bad."

The suit alleges that Jones has not been compensated for work released posthumously by Jackson's former handlers, citing the "This Is It" concert film and soundtrack album, Michael Jackson Cirque du Soleil productions and a 25th anniversary edition of the late pop icon's "Bad" album, Hollywood Reporter wrote.

Jones, one of American pop music's most influential behind-the-scenes figures, a composer, arranger, conductor, and record company executive, has worked with a catalogue of recording legends from Jackson, to Frank Sinatra to Barbra Streisand.

Pearl Jam beats Paul McCartney to the top of Billboard 200 album chart

LOS ANGELES | In a battle of veteran rockers, Pearl Jam beat former Beatle Paul McCartney to the top of the U.S. Billboard 200 album chart on Wednesday.

“Lightning Bolt,” the 10th studio album by Seattle band Pearl Jam, who rose to prominence in the early 1990s grunge-rock movement, sold 166,000 copies in its first week, according to figures from Nielsen SoundScan.

British musician McCartney, 71, came in at No. 3 on the album chart with his latest record “New,” which sold 67,000 copies. That was behind Miley Cyrus’ “Bangerz,” which dropped one spot to No. 2 this week.

The Billboard 200 chart measures both physical and digital album sales in the United States on a weekly basis.

Other new entries in the chart’s top 10 this week include folk-rock group Avett Brothers at No. 5 with “Magpie & The Dandelion,” while “American Idol” winner and country singer Scotty McCreery landed at No. 6 with his latest set, “See You Tonight.”

Country music singer Willie Nelson came in at No. 9 with his latest record “To All the Girls,” featuring duets with some of country music’s longtime female stars including Dolly Parton and Loretta Lynn.

Indie folk rockers The Head and the Heart rounded out the top 10 with its sophomore effort, “Let’s Be Still.”

On the digital songs chart, which measures single track downloads, rapper Eminem shot to the top with his new single “Rap God,” knocking New Zealand singer Lorde’s “Royals” to No. 2 and Katy Perry’s “Roar” to No. 3.

Overall album sales for the week ending October 20 totaled 4.7 million, down 11 percent from the comparable week in 2012, Billboard said.

Manchester United moves closer to Champions League knockout phase after win over Real Sociedad

MANCHESTER – Manchester United ground out a tight 1-0 win over Real Sociedad at Old Trafford on Wednesday to move closer to a place in the Champions League knockout phase.

The decisive goal in the first ever meeting between the teams came within moments of kick-off, Inigo Martinez scoring an own goal after the excellent Wayne Rooney had struck the post.

Both sides hit the woodwork thereafter, Real Sociedad on two occasions, but unlike in Saturday’s 1-1 draw at home to Southampton in the Premier League, United were spared the pain of shipping a late equalizer.

“I thought we played well tonight. I thought we created opportunities,” said United manager David Moyes.

“But while it was 1-0, I still had feelings of Saturday left inside me and while it was 1-0, you know you can always lose a goal from a corner kick or a free-kick.

“But it wouldn’t have been right if we hadn’t taken all three points tonight.”

Victory, coupled with Bayer Leverkusen’s success against Shakhtar Donetsk, leaves United a point above the German side at the top of Group A ahead of their return fixture against La Real on November 5.

“It makes life difficult when you go 1-0 down so early on,” said visiting coach Jagoba Arrasate, whose side have lost their first three games.

“You have to say it’s a fair result.”

Amid domestic shortcomings, the win also eased some of the pressure on Moyes, whose storied predecessor, Alex Ferguson, was once again in attendance, a day after launching his new autobiography.

With Robin van Persie carrying minor toe and groin injuries, Javier Hernandez was handed a start up front for United, while La Real recalled captain Xabi Prieto following a spell out with hamstring trouble.

United were trialling a new ‘singing section’ in the East Stand and the 1,500 fans in that area were given something to sing about within only 69 seconds of kick-off.

Rooney left three defenders in his wake with an uncharacteristic jinking run on the left-hand edge of the penalty area and although his shot hit the post, Martinez inadvertently shanked the rebound into his own net.

Rooney was one of several players criticized in Ferguson’s book, with the Scot repeating his allegation — contested by Rooney — that the striker asked to leave the club in May, but he was at the heart of every United attack.

He had a volley saved by Claudio Bravo and then volleyed acrobatically over the bar from an Antonio Valencia cross, while Hernandez saw a header disallowed for offside.

The visitors began to threaten on the break, however, and after David de Gea tipped a Haris Seferovic shot over, Antoine Griezmann almost silenced the stadium with a free-kick that bounced back off the left-hand upright.

The scares continued early in the second half, with Jonny Evans slicing a cross from Seferovic inches over his own bar in the 51st minute.

Bravo had to produce a sharp save to block a Phil Jones header from point-blank range, but in response, Alberto de la Bella almost embarrassed De Gea with a cross-shot from close to the left-hand touchline that hit the near post.

Rafael ceded his place to Chris Smalling with half an hour to play, apparently due to injury, but gradually United began to reassert control.

Valencia and Rooney each shot straight at Bravo, before the latter produced a piercing through ball for the former, whose low effort came back off the foot of the left-hand post.

Only a smart block by Carlos Martinez prevented Shinji Kagawa from tucking away a pull-back from Valencia, before Rooney blazed a half-volley over from just inside the box.

Substitute Ruben Pardo served a reminder of the visitors’ threat by bending a free-kick a couple of feet wide.

Bravo had to field a curler from Rooney and then rush out to thwart substitute Ashley Young, but although United could not put the game to bed, on this occasion they did not pay the price.

Daimler net profit up on higher sales

BERLIN — Germany’s Daimler, maker of Mercedes-Benz luxury vehicles, said Thursday its net profit rose in the third quarter, helped by higher auto and truck sales as well as efficiency gains.

Net profit jumped 53 percent year-on-year to 1.84 billion euros ($2.54 billion) in the three-month period to September as income tax payments fell.

Operating profit rose 16 percent to 2.23 billion euros, slightly better than a forecast of 2.07 billion euros from analysts polled by Dow Jones Newswires.

“This shows that the high investments we have made were money well spent,” said chief executive officer Dieter Zetsche.

The Stuttgart-based company gave a forecast for the full year, predicting earnings before interest and tax at about 7.5 billion euros, below the previous year’s 8.1 billion euros.

Previously the company had only said profit would decline as it invests in new models.

No more ‘dead spots’ for cellular mobile devices — Smart

MANILA, Philippines — Smart Communications Inc. on Monday said it has started testing on its network a boosting device that eliminates the “dead spots” inside homes and offices.

In a statement, Smart said the Cel-Fi device can dramatically improve mobile reception for voice and data in enclosed spaces.

“Cel-Fi offers a lot of promise because it functions much like a personal cell site and boosts the network performance in corners where signal strength is challenged,” Orlando B. Vea, Smart co-founder and chief wireless advisor said.

“As the leader in wireless services, Smart has continually been on the lookout for new technologies that can enhance the consumers’ mobile experience and offer the best value for them,” he added.

Cel-Fi addresses indoor dead spots by tapping at least one bar of available 3G signal and amplifying it, effectively boosting both 3G and 4G HSPA+ mobile connectivity throughout a specific area.

Designed by US-based Nextivity, the user-friendly device can handle 60 simultaneous calls and support high-speed connections reaching 42 Mbps in an area of up to 1,200 sq. m., making it ideal for homes and small offices.

Compliant with the strict standards of the Federal Communications Commission, Cel-Fi is authorized for use by 120 mobile operators around the world, including AT&T and T-Mobile.

Scientists find farthest galaxy so far

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida -- Astronomers have found the most distant galaxy yet, a discovery that pushes back scientists' view of the universe to about 700 million years after it is thought to have come into existence.

Light from the galaxy, designated by scientists as z8_GND_5296, took about 13.1 billion years to reach the orbiting Hubble Space Telescope and the Keck Observatory in Hawaii, both of which detected the galaxy in infrared light.

"We are learning so much about a region so far back in time it's hard to comprehend. This galaxy we're seeing is almost 13.1 billion years ago and so this was something like 8 billion years before our sun was even born and of course much longer after that until life came around," said lead researcher Steven Finkelstein, an assistant professor with the University of Texas at Austin.

Surprisingly, out of a pool of 43 candidate distant galaxies, z8_GND_5296 was the only one that revealed the key chemical evidence needed to confirm its distance.

That left Finkelstein and colleagues wondering if they had uncovered a clue to a bigger mystery: How soon did light from the universe's first stars and galaxies pierce an obscuring veil of hydrogen gas that existed early in its history?

Scientists believe that at some point, high-energy ultraviolet radiation from exploded stars split the intergalactic hydrogen atoms into electrons and protons. Once ionized, the hydrogen would be electrically conductive and no longer scatter light.

That may have happened about the time of z8_GND_5296's existence.

The galaxy, which is about a billion times as massive as the sun, has two unusual characteristics, which may be a factor in why it is visible, while potential sister galaxies are not.

First, z8_GND_5296 is forming stars at a very fast pace, pumping out about 100 times more stars than the Milky Way galaxy, so it may be brighter than the other candidate galaxies.

Second, it contains a surprisingly high percentage of elements heavier than hydrogen and helium.

Those elements are forged by nuclear fusion inside stars, so either the galaxy contains the exploded remains of lots of massive stars or it formed in a region of space that had been previously seeded with the remnants of a prior generation of stars, scientists said.

"It could be that this one galaxy lives in an over-dense region of (ionized hydrogen) so we can see it ... but that's a little bit of conjecture. For all we know these other galaxies have just a lot more hydrogen gas within the galaxies themselves and that's why we can't see them," Finkelstein said.

He and colleagues hope to conduct a wider survey for ancient galaxies with Hubble, but more details about z8_GND_5296 will likely have to wait until NASA launches its successor observatory, the James Webb Space Telescope, targeted for launch in 2018.

The research appears this week in the journal Nature.

Canon cuts profit outlook as camera slump drags on

TOKYO — Japan’s Canon Corp cut its operating profit outlook for a second quarter in a row as a slump in the market for high-end cameras dragged on with a sharper-than-expected slowdown in emerging markets.

The world’s largest camera maker said it now expects to sell 8 million interchangeable-lens cameras in the year to end-December, down from the previous quarter’s forecast of 9 million and below last year’s total of 8.2 million.

It lowered its full-year operating profit forecast to 360 billion yen ($3.70 billion) from previous guidance of 380 billion yen. That compares with an average of 378.5 billion yen based on 23 analysts’ estimates according to Thomson Reuters Starmine.

White House official fired over anonymous tweets

WASHINGTON — A senior White House official who was helping negotiate nuclear issues with Iran has been fired after being unmasked as the acidic voice behind a Twitter account known for its insults of public figures at the White House and on Capitol Hill, a government official said on Tuesday.

Jofi Joseph was director of nuclear non-proliferation on the White House National Security Council staff, but for more than two years sent hundreds of anonymous and abrasive tweets using the handle @NatSecWonk.

He was fired last week after he was caught, the official said.

A White House official confirmed Joseph no longer worked there, but would not comment on personnel matters. The firing was first reported by the website Daily Beast.

In his Twitter biography, now removed from the social networking site, Joseph described himself as a “keen observer of the foreign policy and national security scene” who “unapologetically says what everyone else only thinks.”

As the widely followed @NatSecWonk, Joseph speculated anonymously about the political motives and career moves of administration officials he worked with. They included Ben Rhodes, President Barack Obama’s spokesman on national security issues.

This month, Joseph tweeted that Hillary Clinton, the former secretary of state, “had few policy goals and no wins” in the Middle East. He agreed with Republican Representative Darrell Issa, who has relentlessly pursued Clinton for administration actions after last year’s attack on the U.S. diplomatic post in Benghazi, Libya.

“Look, Issa is an ass, but he’s on to something here with the @HillaryClinton whitewash of accountability for Benghazi,” he tweeted.

He also sniped at U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power’s use of Twitter. “Can someone again brief @AmbassadorPower that Bashar Assad likely doesn’t follow her Twitter feed?” he recently wrote.

Joseph did not respond to phone and email requests for comment, but he told the website Politico he regretted his tweets.

“What started out as an intended parody account of DC culture developed over time into a series of inappropriate and mean-spirited comments. I bear complete responsibility for this affair and I sincerely apologize to everyone I insulted,” Joseph said in an email to Politico.

He also targeted journalists, including Daily Beast reporter Josh Rogin who broke the story of his firing. “Just a hunch, but I have the sense lots of people would like to punch @joshrogin in the face,” he said earlier this month.

Wall Street ends down as Caterpillar falls, Boeing rallies

NEW YORK - U.S. stocks fell on Wednesday as shares of heavy-equipment maker Caterpillar and semiconductor companies tumbled after they reported earnings, ending the S&P 500's four-session streak of record high finishes.

Results from Caterpillar Inc and Boeing Co, two Dow components, illustrated the quarter's mixed picture of corporate results and outlooks, which have some investors worried.

Caterpillar was one of the biggest decliners on the S&P, slumping 6.2 percent to $83.62 after the manufacturer cut its full-year outlook for a third time and its profit missed expectations. That sent shares tumbling by the most in a day since September 2011.

"There's not a lot of room for error as earnings are growing at such a slow pace, particularly for a globally focused company like Caterpillar, which has been a proxy for global GDP in global markets," said Erik Davidson, deputy chief investment officer at Wells Fargo Private Bank. "It's no secret the rest of the world has suffered, so therefore a company like Caterpillar is going to suffer."

On the upside, Boeing surged 5.3 percent to $129.02 after airplane maker reported a rise in adjusted profit and raising its full-year forecast.

After the market closed, both AT&T and TripAdvisor reported revenue that was slightly below Wall Street's estimates. AT&T's revenue grew from the previous quarter to $32.16 billion compared with Wall Street estimates for $32.19 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S data.

TripAdvisor's revenue rose 20 percent to $255.1 million in the third quarter, below analysts' expectations of $255.9 million. TripAdvisor shares in extended-hours trading were up 5 percent to $79.25 after closing down 0.3 percent at $75.21 in the regular session. AT&T shares were flat.

About one-third of S&P 500 companies have reported thus far, with 66.3 percent topping profit expectations, a rate that is slightly higher than the historical average. Roughly 54 percent have beaten on revenue, below the 61 percent long-term average. Investors worry that much of the growth in earnings has not been generated by revenue.

"Finally the markets are focused on earnings after having been focused on many other things," Davidson, who called third quarter results released so far "tepid."

The semiconductor sector .SOX dropped 3.4 percent a day after Broadcom, Altera and RF Micro Devices  joined Intel and Texas Instruments in lowering their forecasts.

Broadcom shares fell 2.9 percent to $26.36, Altera lost 13.5 percent to $32.30 and RF Micro lost 8.6 percent to $5.63.

The Dow Jones industrial average was down 54.40 points, or 0.35 percent, at 15,413.26. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was down 8.31 points, or 0.47 percent, at 1,746.36. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 22.49 points, or 0.57 percent, at 3,907.07.

The S&P 500 closed at an all-time high on Tuesday, its fourth-straight record finish. The index is up 22 percent for the year up to Tuesday, not far from the 23.5 percent advance in 2009.

On Wednesday, 53 percent of total shares traded were declining.

Global equity markets weakened as China's primary short-term money rates rose on concerns the People's Bank of China may tighten its cash supply to counter inflation risks, which could hurt growth in the world's second-largest economy.

Also weighing on sentiment, the European Central Bank said it would put major euro zone banks through rigorous tests next year to build confidence in the sector. Some analysts said that if the review reveals unexpected problems, investor confidence could be undermined.

Netflix shares were up 2.4 percent to $330.24 following a large selloff on Tuesday when billionaire investor Carl Icahn cut his stake in the company.
