HTC turnaround prospects bleak as profit slides

TAIPEI — Taiwan’s HTC Corp said third-quarter revenue could fall as much as 30 percent from the previous three months, far worse than expected and underscoring deepening troubles for a smartphone maker with little prospect of an immediate turnaround.

A delayed launch for its much-hyped flagship phone, the HTC One, has only exacerbated inventory troubles and highlighted its lack of scale when compared to Samsung Electronics Co Ltd and Apple Inc at a time when the market for high-end phones is said to be approaching saturation.

HTC said it expects revenue this quarter of T$50 billion to T$60 billion ($1.7 billion to $2 billion), far below a market consensus of T$75.65 billion and its previous quarterly revenue of T$70.7 billion.

While the company said it expected an improvement in the fourth quarter, analysts were skeptical about a significant near-term reversal of fortunes.

“Negative across the board,” said Daniel Chang, an analyst at Macquarie Securities. “It doesn’t seem like the company has any strategy that can turn this around.”

HTC shares have fallen 44 percent for the year to date and are now trading at lows not seen since 2005.

It is not the only smartphone maker facing an uphill battle as growth for higher-end phones slows, with Nokia Oyj and BlackBerry Ltd also recently reporting weak results.

HTC’s earnings warning is only one disappointment of many over the last several quarters. While the HTC One’s sleek aluminium design has won plaudits, its launch was delayed by several months due to a shortage of camera components and the company has also been hurt by a wave of executive departures.

Its second-quarter net profit came in at just T$1.25 billion, far below forecasts and followed a record low in the first three months of the year. Its worldwide market share has tumbled to 2.5 percent, compared with a peak of 10.3 percent in the third quarter of 2011, according to research firm Gartner.

Alvin Kwock, an analyst at JPMorgan, said HTC’s small size meant it was unable to compete as Samsung cut prices for its Galaxy smartphones in many markets.

“Even a hero product can’t save them,” he said, adding that a partnership with another firm – a possibility CEO Peter Chou has said he would look at – was one of the few strong options open to HTC.

Although HTC is expected to soon launch the HTC One Mini, Samsung and Apple are also likely to announce their own new offerings later this year. A planned marketing blitz, which includes enlisting Robert Downey Jr. for a reported $12 million to star in its ad campaigns, is expected to weigh on profit margins.

Settle Debts Before Investing?

Question: Hi Rose. I enjoy reading your FQ and parenting articles. I also want to start investing now but I think I have to settle my debts first. What do you think? – J.N. via email

Answer: Hi J.N. Yes I agree with you. If you have been carrying debts, which cost you money, the first step is to pay them off. Think of it this way, if you’re able to pay off your credit card debts that charge 3.5% per month, you just “earned” yourself an annual return of 42%! Where can you find an investment return like that?

Sometimes people are also afraid to touch their Emergency Fund to pay off their credit card debts because they want the security of having ready cash for emergency. However, please remember that while your credit card charges you 42% p.a. your Emergency Fund, even if kept in money market placements, only gives you around 2-3% p.a. So pay those loans, then start building your Emergency Fund again. If you have an existing home mortgage with a decent interest rate of 5 to 5.5% p.a., then I think you don’t have to wait to fully pay that before you can start investing. Just make sure that you pay your mortgage on time so you don’t incur penalties and other charges.

I am preparing for a half-day workshop this week for the employees of a government agency. The Human Resources Director asked me to tackle the issue on debt management because she knows that a lot of their employees have debt problems.

She shared with me that their salaries are still given in cash instead of direct credit to employee ATM accounts. When I suggested that they shift to direct credit system in order to nudge their employees to save, she said, “We’re concerned that they might pawn their ATM cards!” I was surprised to hear this and learn that this has become a common practice among people who are living from paycheck to paycheck.

The Origin of Debt:

To know more about debt, I did some research on the origin of debt. I found this book entitled Debt: The First 5,000 Years by anthropologist David Graeber. His interesting theory is that debt originated as early as 3500 B.C., long before the advent of coinage or money in 600 B.C., refuting the traditional explanation for the origins of monetary economies from primitive bartering system as laid out by Adam Smith, the father of modern economics.

I’m not yet done reading the book but it promises to be an interesting read as it talks about how throughout our history indebtedness has led to unrest, insurrections and revolts. The morality of debt is also discussed – how people mired in debt would resort to using their children as payment; how the IMF and the big banks convinced the Third World dictators and politicians to take out loans (while pocketing some in their Swiss accounts) whose interest rates later on skyrocketed leading to the Third World Debt Crisis in the 80s; how the sub-prime lending era crafted mortgages that makes default inevitable, taking bets on these defaults and selling them to institutional investors, turning over the responsibility of paying off debts to giant insurance conglomerates and eventually being bailed out by taxpayers.

What we can gather from this data so far is that debt is really something to be careful with, both on a personal and national/international basis. Inasmuch as it can help us enjoy big-ticket items like buying a house or expanding our business, growing our country without having to put up 100% of cash required, mismanagement can also make life miserable. I’m glad that you intend to pay off your debts now.

Ways to pay off your debts:

The most cost-efficient way to retire your debts is to pay off those which carry high financing cost. And since front-end fees would have been paid by now, these are the loans that carry the highest interest rates. Always make sure you compare the rates on a per annum (p.a.) basis.

However, since handling money is not all about math but has a lot to do about emotions, there are a lot of proponents of the so-called Debt Snowball Method. This method, popularized by Dave Ramsey, advises you to pay off the loan with the smallest outstanding balance first, on to the bigger ones until you pay off all loans. The primary advantage of this method is the psychological contentment that you will feel as you tick off debts from your list. So the smaller the debt, the easier and sooner you can pay it off. You’ll feel the progress more in doing this and give you optimism and drive to pursue until all debts are paid off.

Check which one works for you. As I’ve discussed in previous articles, humans are not always rational and we should work out systems for ourselves such that we move towards our goals more successfully.

May I also remind you not to incur new debts? Review and reflect on how you got into indebtedness so you know what to avoid. Remember debt is bondage. The sooner you get out of it, the closer you move towards your financial freedom. Continue to read up on investing. The more you know about it, the more excited you will be to start the adventure, the more motivated you’ll be to pay off your debts.

Quotes on Debt:

Let me end with some quotes on debts that may be good for you to ponder upon.

“Wars in old times were made to get slaves. The modern implement of imposing slavery is debt.” - Ezra Pound

“If you have debt I’m willing to bet that general clutter is a problem for you too.” - Suze Orman

“In the long run we shall have to pay our debts at a time that may be very inconvenient for our survival.” - Norbert Wiener

“One of the greatest disservices you can do a man is to lend him money that he can’t pay back.” - Jesse Jones

“Debt is like any other trap, easy enough to get into, but hard enough to get out of.” - Henry Wheeler Shaw

“Debt is the secret foe of thrift, as vice and idleness are its open enemies.”-James H. Aughey

“It is poor judgment to countersign another’s note, to become responsible for his debts.” - Bible

“If I owe you a pound, I have a problem; but if I owe you a million, the problem is yours.” - John Maynard Keynes

I wish you freedom from debt soon and financial happiness.

Sincerely,

Rose

Slimmers World shapes bodies –– and brighter futures

MANILA, Philippines - Eighteen-year-old morena, Janicel Lubina stood out in a sea of 35 contestants at the recent 2013 Miss Bikini Philippines Pageant staged by Slimmers World International for the sixth consecutive year.

Janicel admits that the Miss Bikini Philippines contest was the toughest hurdle she had to go through in her young life. But in the end, she won the crown because of her almost perfect figure (34-22-35), towering height (5’10”) and a strength of character that could only be the product of a tough life in her hometown, Palawan. But Janicel still sees a positive side to it. “Poverty is the best diet,” she proclaims almost defiantly, refusing to look pitiful and pathetic.

As this year’s Miss Bikini Philippines, she won half a million pesos in cash, plus other prizes in kind. Like her predecessors, she was initially given P100,000 that she promptly sent to her parents in Palawan. (The rest of the cash prize will be given to her in the succeeding months up to the time she finishes her reign.)

After her reign is over, her option is to pursue modeling full-time. However, she knows that going back to school and earning a diploma is her only chance at stability. It is her dream to become a teacher and she doesn’t mind being a working student while pursuing tertiary education.

When Slimmers World learned about Janicel’s wish to study, the company officials asked STI (an events partner) to give the newly-crowned Miss Bikini Philippines a scholarship. She is also enrolled at John Robert Powers, which granted her a personality development course that will come in handy when she competes in the Miss Bikini International contest in China last quarter of this year.

Regardless of the outcome of the international pageant, Slimmers World will be behind her in the quest for a brighter future for her and her siblings in Palawan.

Janicel will not be the first Miss Bikini Philippines to be empowered through the help of Slimmers World. Miss Bikini Philippines 2008 Yen Lopena also came from humble beginnings. Although she finished Hotel and Restaurant Management cum laude at the Philippine College Technology in Davao, she had to work at the Marco Polo Hotel as a lounge attendant for which she was way overqualified because there were no other job opportunities that came her way.

Her winning Miss Bikini Philippines changed all that. She was trained directly under the supervision of lady boss, Helen Camacho. Today, Yen is the manager of Slimmers World Binondo center.

Another success story was that of Astrid Hernandez, a former Miss Bikini Philippines candidate who later became the manager of the Slimmers World Cebu branch. Also farmed out in Slimmers World’s various branches and assigned to different departments are other alumnae of Miss Bikini Philippines.

Miss Bikini Philippines was originally envisioned to promote health and fitness. But through the years the contest helped transform for the better the lives of several young women by molding their personalities, boosting their confidence and opening concrete career opportunities for them.

The Slimmers World formula for helping improve the lives of these ladies is simple: unlike in other beauty pageants where the “thank you” girls are sent off the stage after the proclamation of winners, Helen Camacho and her staff try to spot contestants with career potential (even those who did not make it to the finals) and, if amenable to working for the company, are absorbed by Slimmers World, and this eventually becomes their training ground.

Slimmers World has branches in Adriatico, Alabang, Binondo, Caloocan, Cebu, Greenhills, Legaspi, SM Megamall, Pasay Road, Pasig, SM City, Subic, and Trafalgar Plaza in Makati. For information, call 536-3333, 525-8771 or 091-SLIMMERS.

Martin Escudero remains positive about his career sans manager

“Wala nang stress, walang nang kahit anong negatibo kaya kahit anong mangyari nabibiyayaan pa rin tayo ng Panginoon. Masayang-masaya ako kasi stress-free,” Martin Escudero stated as he greeted InterAksyon and other media during last week’s press launch of Yes! Magazine’s 100 Most Beautiful Stars.

The young actor, who was among the Kapatid stars who made the list, was in the news a couple of months ago when he decided to leave former manager Popoy Caritativo after seven years.

“Yung pag-alis ko sa manager ko eh ‘yun ‘yung kinakailangan na talagang gawin. Hindi ko na inisip kung anong kalalabasan ng career ko. Basta ako nagtatrabaho ako ng maayos. Importante ang pamilya ko hindi mawawala,” he said.

Martin admitted in past interviews that the decision was born out of months of deliberation and consultations with people close to him and his family. Although he was vague about his reasons for leaving, he did hint at problems with trust and money.

“’Yung ibang dahilan na mas malalim siguro hayaan na lang natin na kami na lang yung nakakaalam kasi unang-una matagal nang tapos. Hindi na kailangan pang magsabihan ng kung ano-ano against sa isa’t isa,” he pleaded.

He was brave enough to admit however, that life without a manager is proving difficult.

“Mahirap po talaga kasi hindi namin na trabaho yun eh. Siyempre yung mga koneksyon manager lahat ang nakakaalam niyan pero sa ngayon suwerte pa rin kasi awa ng Diyos kasi ako ‘yung hinahanap eh kaya medyo nakaka-survive kami,” he said.

Still, Martin revealed that he is not in a hurry to get a new manager at the moment.

“Marami na kaming nakakausap pero inaantay pa namin na matapos yung contract ko sa 5 kaya minabuti na lang muna namin na saka na lang muna,” he said.

Martin’s contract with TV5 expires in January but he announced that he has projects lined up with his home network.

“May nabalitaan ako na malapit na rin mag-umpisa so sana kung loloobin ng Diyos na mangyari,” he said.

He is also starting on a new indie movie come September.

“Meron akong gagawin na indie pero bawal pa magsabi ng mga detalye. Strikto sila. May pinirmahan pa kaming contract na bawal magbigay ng detalye,” he said.

Although not limited to stereotypes during his time with his former manager, Martin revealed that he is willing to go bolder and more daring with his roles in the future.

“Sa tingin ko lahat naman pinagdadaanan yun eh pero sa tamang edad. Mahirap pilitin eh, baka maumay lang yung tao sa akin,” he said.

“May tamang timing na tinatawag. Basta para sa trabaho kung makakatulong, ayun ang isa sa mga pangarap ko na project na magawa,” he added.

Insurance issue settlement allows NBA players to suit up for Russia in EuroBasket

MOSCOW -– Concerns over whether the Russian Basketball Federation would be able to cover insurance costs for three NBA players headed to the European championship in September have been resolved, national team general manager Fyodor Voropaev told R-Sport Sunday.

The participation of Alexey Shved, Timofey Mozgov, and Sergey Karasev had been in jeopardy after their NBA clubs requested the federation pay extra insurance on top of FIBA’s mandatory coverage, Voropaev said.

“At the request of some of the players’ clubs and agents we’ve drawn up and will pay extra insurance,” he said.

He said he lobbied the federation for a minimum 20,000 euros (US$ 26,500) for each player. Brooklyn Nets forward Andrei Kirilenko, the national team’s only other NBA player, will not suit up.

Shved, a 6-foot-6 guard, played 77 games with the Minnesota Timberwolves last season. Karasev, 19, was the 19th overall pick by the Cleveland Cavaliers at the NBA draft in June.

Mozgov, a back-up center with the Denver Nuggets, has a history of ankle injuries, including one suffered in a 2012 Olympic qualifying tournament that sidelined him from training before the London 2012 Games. He re-signed with the Nuggets on Saturday for a reported three years.

NBA clubs often encourage their players – or outright bar them – from playing in international competition over fear of injury. The European championship, also known as EuroBasket, is particularly distressing as it occurs about a month before the NBA preseason opens.

EuroBasket, the qualifier for the 2014 FIBA World Championship, runs Sept. 4-22 in Slovenia.

Inspiration has an expiration date

You are working on a morphing business landscape today. Implements that were once out of reach are conveniently available; new software and technologies are readily accessible for little or no cost. One person can do the work that used to take two or three people to finish. You’re connected like never before through online calls and social media platforms. You don’t even have to be in business attire or technically need an office these days to do business.

The New York Times bestseller Rework by Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hansson demonstrates a better and easier way to succeed in business. It offers new thinking on the rules of entrepreneurship, mainly by revealing the secrets of starting and running a business. Fried and Hansson had great success with their web-application company 37signals. With the tome, both carry on a conversation about a startup philosophy in the tech world, and share idea gems that have the influence to truly restructure a company’s approach to the creative process. So much is packed into Rework; here are a few of the book highlights that jump out.

Workaholics don’t actually accomplish more than non-workaholics. They may claim to be perfectionists, but that just means they’re wasting time fixating on inconsequential details instead of moving on to the next task. The truth is, sometimes they do accomplish more than their non-workaholic colleagues. But if all you do is work, you’re unlikely to have sound judgments. Your values and decision-making wind up skewed. You stop being able to decide what’s worth extra effort and what’s not. And you wind up just plain tired. No one makes sharp decisions when tired. As such, being a workaholic isn’t exactly a viable way to operate.

Millennials will force companies to allow employees to work from home. You don’t even have to imagine this, you can just look at the numbers. Remote work is growing at an impressive clip. From 2005 to 2011, the number of remote workers grew 73 percent according to the Telework Research Network. It’s a viral thing, too. Once you have experienced the lifestyle benefits of working remotely, you’re highly unlikely to pick another cubicle job. Young people do not have the same reservations about using electronic communication to get stuff done. They grew up with that being the norm. So some of this generational gap can be summed up with a quote by celebrity septuagenarian Michael Bloomberg: “Telecommuting is one of the dumber ideas I’ve ever heard.” As the millennials would likely say in response, “Sure, Grandpa.”

No time is no excuse. You bellyache that you don’t have time to mingle, you don’t have time to produce that movie in your head, and you don’t have time to exercise, or lose weight. When you want something badly enough, you make the time, regardless of your other commitments. To others, however, delaying things can be a positive. They often delay implementation of innovations for a period of time hoping to discover a better solution. But at the end of it, don’t let yourself off the hook with excuses. Besides, the perfect time never arrives.

The core of your business should be built around things that last. Focus on what won’t change — things that people are going to want today and 10 years from now. Amazon.com concentrates on fast or free shipping, great selection, friendly return policies, and affordable prices — things that will always be in high demand. Japanese automakers center their operations on core principles that don’t change — reliability, affordability and practicality. Focusing on the next big thing, and latching on to what’s hot and new, is temporary; they fade away. When you train your sight on permanent features, you’re in bed with things that never go out of style.

Big decisions are hard to make and hard to change. Consider making tiny decisions instead. You can’t make big mistakes with them. Make choices that are small enough that they’re successfully impermanent. It doesn’t mean you can’t make big plans or think big ideas. It just means you believe the best way to achieve those big things is having one tiny decision at a time.

It’s okay to “under-do” your competition. Do less than your competitors to beat them. Solve the simple problems and leave the dangerous, easier-said-than-done, vicious problems to the competition. Instead of “one-upping,” try “one-downing.” Instead of “outdoing,” try “under-doing.” Focus on yourself and not your competition. Come up with your own fresh ideas, and not waste time following your competition. You are not running a company that changes plans based on what the competition is doing. That’s what the Flip camera — an ultra easy, point-and-shoot, compact camcorder — did, and in the process took a significant percentage of the market in a short time. It doesn’t do everything other cameras do. It does a few simple things, and its simplicity made it highly saleable.

Saying no by default. You avoid saying no because confrontation makes you uncomfortable. But the alternative is even worse. You drag things out, make things complicated, and work on ideas you don’t believe in. It’s like a relationship: breaking one up is hard to do, but staying in it just because you’re too chicken to drop the ax is even shoddier. Deal with the brief discomfort of confrontation up front and avoid the long-term regret. Learn to say no.

Being obscure is a great position to be in. Welcome anonymity. No one knows who you are right now. And that’s just fine. Be happy you’re in the shadows. Use this time to make mistakes without the whole world hearing about them. Keep tweaking. Work out the kinks. Test random ideas. Try new things. Broadway shows provide a great example of testing ideas on a small stage first. They routinely do a trial run in a smaller city before hitting New York.

Failure is not a prerequisite for success. It doesn’t matter what’s gone before. It doesn’t matter that others have tried and failed. Your misplaced conceptions or ill-conceived ideas are what commit your ventures to failure. You create your own luck and in spite of others. You succeed because of you. Evolution doesn’t linger on past failures. It’s always building on what worked. So should you.

If you are trying to decide among a few people to fill a position, hire an excellent writer. It doesn’t matter if what you need is a marketer, salesperson, designer, programmer, or whatever. A person’s writing skill will pay off. That’s because being a good writer is about more than writing. Clear writing is a sign of clear thinking. Great writers know how to communicate. They make things easy to understand. They can put themselves in someone else’s shoes. They know what to omit. And those are qualities you want in any candidate.

Long-term business planning is guessing. You may agree or disagree with this statement. To some, it may sound ridiculous and a waste of time and resources, since who knows what technological innovations might affect your plans in six months? So they basically plopped in some random projections. To others though, long-term planning helps steer you in the right direction and brings you closer to your desired outcome.

Trusting your gut. You need to be in tune and feel the pulse of how people perceive your product, how they use it, and the problems they are really solving with it. Don’t be too data-driven. Don’t look at numbers to make decisions; instead look at trends and patterns to lead to new insights. Don’t take numbers as a “yes” or “no,” but as a part of what you do. Oftentimes you’ll do things that the numbers say won’t work. Numbers can only measure what’s happened in the past. That’s valuable to know, but you have to trust your gut moving forward — otherwise you’re just going to be running in place.

A strong stand is how you attract super fans. This is true of blogging and of business. Draw a line in the sand and stick to it. In other words, you won’t please any of them if you try to be everything to every customer. It’s better to really please your base and forget the rest.

When you impose a deadline, you gain clarity. Don’t delay a launch until everything is perfect. Or, think of it this way: “If you had to launch your business in two weeks, what would you cut out? You suddenly realize there’s a lot of stuff you don’t need. And what you do need seems obvious. You can also break your estimates into smaller bites. For example, instead of one 12-week project, structure it as 12 one-week projects.

When something goes wrong, someone is going to tell the story. You’ll be better off if it’s you. Own and report your bad news. Otherwise you create an opportunity for rumors, hearsay, and false information to spread. When something bad happens, tell your customers. Don’t even think you can just sweep it under the rug. People will respect you more if you are open, honest, public and responsive during a crisis.

Alone time is key. Unplug. Take an hour “off” to focus on a key task. Shut down your e-mail. Don’t take calls. Work alone. Concentrate.

A good apology accepts responsibility. That’s how to say you’re sorry. It has no conditional “if” phrase attached. Here’s a bad one: “We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.” The “may” here implies there might not be anything wrong at all. Own up and be sincere.

Some of the thoughts presented in Rework may be acceptable or uncomfortable — ASAP is poison, meetings are toxic, or pick a fight — depending on your framework. But one thing is sure: it’s a kaleidoscope world, there are many possible roadmaps and more than one way to skin a cat. And just because you already have procedures and rules in place, you don’t automatically have to put up with them if you believe there is a better way to reach the same goal or attain the same outcome. One last take from Fried and Hansson that captures the essence of this good read: you have ideas. And ideas are immortal. They last forever. What doesn’t last forever is inspiration. It is perishable. Inspiration, like fresh fruit or milk has an expiration date. It is a magical thing, a productivity multiplier, and a motivator. But it won’t wait for you. If you want to do something, you’ve got to do it now.

Palawan, Boracay top World’s Best Islands list

MANILA, Philippines - Palawan has dislodged Boracay as the best island for international travelers, based on a recent survey conducted by New York-based Travel+Leisure magazine.

This is the first time that Palawan became part of the international travel magazine’s list, even pushing Boracay, which previously ruled the rankings, to second place.

In the survey dubbed “2013 World’s Best” conducted from December 2012 to April 2013, Travel+Leisure magazine readers gave Palawan a score of 95.04 points as against Boracay’s 93.58.

The respondents selected for the survey rated the islands based on their natural attractions and beaches as well as their activities, food and people.

Palawan and Boracay beat other world-famous islands in the list, even those that are in Travel+Leisure’s hall of fame.

The island of Maui in Hawaii ranked third this year, followed by Santorini in Greece and Prince Edward Island in Canada.

Other islands in the top 10 list were Bali in Indonesia, Kauai in Hawaii, Sicily in Italy, Koh Samui in Thailand and the Galapagos in Ecuador.

Last year, Palawan hogged the limelight after its famous tourist attraction, the Puerto Princesa Underground River, was named one of the new seven wonders of nature.

ROME - Thirty people died after a coach came off a flyover and plunged 30 meters (98 feet) down a slope in southern Italy on Sunday, an ANSA news agency photographer at the scene said Sunday.

"Looking down from the overpass, the scene of the tragedy: some 30 bodies covered by white sheets, lined up along the roadside," said photographer Cesare Abbate. Several cars that had been hit by the coach lay piled up on the flyover, he added.

Deadly train crash derails Spain's bid to win new markets abroad

MADRID—The horrific train crash in Spain that killed 78 people comes at the worst time for the recession-hit nation's railway sector, which is pushing to win new markets for its high-speed trains.

Spain is in the running for a contract worth $16.4 billion (12.7 billion euros) for a high-speed rail network in Brazil linking the cities of Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and Campinas which will be awarded in September.

The country, which two years ago won a contract to build and operate a high-speed rail link in Saudi Arabia, is also eyeing new markets in the United States, Russia, Kazakhstan and the United Arab Emirates.

"Technologically Spain is a pioneer in high-speed rail," Alejandro Lago, a logistics professor at the Iese business school in Barcelona, told AFP.

Since the 1960s, the country has had trains made by its Talgo train maker that could circulate at speeds of up to 200 kilometres (125 miles) an hour, he added.

Spain has invested heavily in road and rail links over the past decade and it now has the second-largest high-speed train network in the world, spanning 3,100 kilometres. Only China's is larger.

The train derailed about four kilometres (2.5 miles) from the station in northwestern Santiago de Compostela Wednesday, on the eve of a famed religious festival held annually in the city, where St. James, one of Jesus' apostles, is believed to be buried.

A dramatic 10-second video from a railway security camera, seen around the world, shows the train rocketing around a curve, slamming into a concrete wall at the side of the track as the engine overturns.

Daily newspaper El Pais reported that one of the two drivers on board said he was doing 190 kilometres per hour (118 mph) as he took the bend, where the speed limit is just 80 kph.

The investigation is trying to find out why the train was going so fast and why security devices to keep speed within permitted limits did not slow the train.

Spanish state railway company Renfe said the train -- a model able to adapt between high-speed and normal tracks -- had no technical problems and had just passed an inspection on the morning of the accident.

The crash -- Spain's deadliest rail disaster in decades -- is a huge blow for the country's bid for the deal in Brazil.

Brazil's bidding process for the country's lucrative infrastructure project specifies that firms in the run cannot have had an accident that caused deaths in their high-speed rail network in the last five years, El Pais reported.

That would appear to disqualify Renfe, according to the newspaper.

The rule -- which applies only if an accident is due to "operational causes" -- has already disqualified China's Communications Company Limited from the running due to an accident in June 2011 that killed 33 people.

The private and public Spanish companies that make up the consortium in the running for the contract have been reluctant to speak publicly about the impact of the accident on their bid.

But several unnamed sources close to the consortium, which includes Renfe and Spanish rail network administrator Adif, told Spanish business daily El Economista that they felt the contract was "lost".

This would be a major setback for Spain, which has been hoping to bank on its recent deal with Saudi Arabia to obtain similar projects.

"It's important because we're talking about high-speed rail and we want to show that we are world leaders in this area," Spanish secretary of state for transport, Rafael Catala, said in an interview with AFP earlier this month.

In 2011, a Spanish consortium won a 6.7-billion-euro contract to build and operate a 450-kilometre (280-mile) high-speed rail link in the desert between the holy cities of Mecca and Medina.

Spain's first big foreign rail contract was signed with Turkey. A Spanish consortium built the high-speed rail link between Ankara and Istanbul which was inaugurated in 2009.

"During an economic downturn, the railway sector tries to compensate with activity abroad, with exports," said Pedro Fortea, the head of Spanish railway company association Mafex, which helps promote 73 firms abroad.

"Spain has experience which is transferable to other countries," he added.

Seven killed in Florida hostage drama

MIAMI - Six people were shot to death in a shootout in an apartment building near the US city of Miami that ended early Saturday when police killed the suspect, police said.

Authorities said there was gunfire on several floors of the Hialeah building before the suspect decided to hunker down in an apartment, taking the couple inside hostage.

His motive was not immediately known, police spokesman Sergeant Eddie Rodriguez said, adding "six innocent people died and also the suspect who initiated this situation."

Rodriguez said the incident began at 6:30 pm Friday and ended at 2:30 am Saturday when a police SWAT team moved into the building and into the apartment where the suspect was holed up.

"The pair of hostages did not know the suspect and tried for hours to negotiate with him to surrender," Rodriguez said, adding when the suspect continued to refuse, "police had to act."

The two hostages, a man and a woman, were uninjured. But among the dead were an elderly couple identified by their daughter as Colombians Italo and Samira Pisciotti. Rodriguez said they were the building's landlords.

Shamira Pisciotti said her parents had gone "to see a tenant who made a complaint, and it seems there was an altercation.

"The person started shooting," she told Spanish-language news channel Univision.

"I saw my mama. She died the moment she was shot," Pisciotti said, adding she heard 15 to 20 shots in total.

Authorities are still working to identify the rest of the victims.

The building in the mainly Cuban-populated city of Hialeah housed around 90 families. It is not yet confirmed whether the suspect lived there.

Florida has the most permissive gun laws in the United States, and, according to a state report, in December 2012, the state had more than a million permits to carry concealed weapons.

MANILA, Philippines - Who is the 20th century Spanish architect and city planner whose groundbreaking works include the Miro Foundation Building and the Spanish Pavilion in the 1937 Paris International Exhibition?

He was born in Barcelona in 1902. After graduating from the Escuela Tecnica Superior de Arqutectura in 1929 he  worked with Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret in Paris.

Returning to Barcelona in 1930, he continued his practice there until 1937.  There, he created several outstanding pieces of modern architecture like the the weekend house at Garraf Catalonia, the Central Dispensary of Barcelona, and the Master Plan of the City of Barcelona (1933-35).

During that time, he also helped organize the first group of architects affiliated with Congres International d’Architecture Modern or CIAM.

From 1937 through 1939 he lived in Paris where he designed the Spanish Republic’s pavilion at the World’s Fair, the Paris Exposition 1937.  The Spanish Pavilion was built right beside the Nazi Germany Pavilion, while in Spain the Civil War was going on, and the Nazis had just bombed the town of Guernica.

For the artistic content of the building, he called on his Spanish artist friends Picasso, Miro, and Calder. Picasso’s contribution was Guernica, which became the focal point of its design.

After the Civil War, he went into exile in the US, where he worked with the Town Planning Associates, carrying out numerous urban plans for the cities in South America.

After a one year visiting professorship at Yale University in 1952, he became dean of the Harvard Graduate School of Design from 1953 to 1969.

There, he initiated the world’s first degree program in urban design, integrated the programs of architecture, planning, landscape, and urban design, and taught many of today’s leading architects.

In 1955, he founded a studio in Cambridge, Massachusetts, which in 1958 became a partnership with Huson Jackson and Ronald Gourney.  The studio designed many well-known projects including the Maeght Foundation in southern france, the Fundacio Miro in Bacelona, and a few buildings for Harvard University include the Holyoke Center, the Harvard Science Center, Peabody Terrace Apartments.

His other memorable works include the US Embassy in Baghdad, Motor City in Brazil, and his home in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Through his architecture, he hoped to achieve a balance of contrasting elements.  He worked to effectively and successfully combine people with machines, urban density and support services, and community spaces with private spaces.

In 1981, he was awarded the AIA Gold Medal.  He died in Barcelona in 1983.

Prince Harry said he had already held the new prince who was 'crying his eyes out' when they first met.

Forex reserves resumed climb in July, BSP says

MANILA - The Philippines' foreign exchange reserves likely resumed their increase this month with the appreciation of the US dollar, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Governor Amando M. Tetangco Jr. said today.

“It’s because of the foreign exchange operations,” Tetangco said, adding that the appreciation of the US dollar against other currencies such as the Japanese yen and euro also supported the rise in the Philippines' gross international reserves (GIR). The country's hoard of US dollars accounts for 60 percent of its foreign exchange reserves.

“It could to the extent that you have non-dollar reserves – such as yen and euro. If the value of US dollar went up against these currencies, it would have an effect in the dollar value of the GIR but it would be small,” Tetangco said.

He said the BSP would continue to look for opportunities to diversify its reserves, adding that the Chinese yuan can become a candidate if it becomes a convertible currency.

“There are certain criteria for a currency to be part of reserve. This is based on the International Monetary Fund (IMF) definition of international reserve, which is that the currency should be convertible,” Tetangco said.

The Philippines' GIR stood at $81.6 billion at end-June, or $0.4 billion lower than the $82 billion at end-May. At this level, reserves remain adequate to cover 11.8 months worth of imports of goods and payments of services and income.

Alternatively, the reserves would allow the country to pay 8.3 times over its short-term external debt based on original maturity and six times based on residual maturity, which includes portions of the principal maturing in the next 12 months.

The slight decline in reserves last June was due mainly to revaluation adjustments on the BSP’s gold holdings arising from the decrease in the price of gold in the international market. Also pulling down GIR were payments for maturing foreign exchange obligations of the national government.

The BSP forecast reserves hitting $86 billion by yearend, up from last year's $83.8 billion. An ample GIR helps prop up the peso and keep domestic inflation at bay.

The country's economic managers last week revised their exchange rate forecast to a range of P41-43 for every dollar, lower than their previous estimate of P43-45. The peso yesterday settled at 43.23 against the greenback.

Inflation has averaged 2.9 percent in the first six months of the year, or below the lower end of the BSP's full-year target range of 3-5 percent.

William and Kate show off royal baby boy

LONDON - Britain's Prince William and his wife Kate gave the world its first glimpse of their newborn baby son on Tuesday, cradling the future king in their arms as they left hospital to go home.

The Duchess of Cambridge told the massed international media that it had been a "very emotional" experience, while the duke said that they were still working on a name for the third-in-line to the throne.

The baby raised a tiny hand above his white blankets but remained quiet and peaceful, despite cheers from well-wishers and shouts of hundreds of photographers outside St. Mary's Hospital in London.

The baby was born at 4:24 p.m. (1524 GMT) on Monday after at least 10 hours of labor, weighing a healthy eight pounds six ounces (3.8 kilograms), ending weeks of anticipation around the globe.

Kate, wearing a loose-fitting cornflower-blue dress, held the baby as the royal couple emerged from the front door of the hospital's private Lindo Wing, before passing him to her husband.

"He's got a good pair of lungs on him, that's for sure," 31-year-old William -- the son of Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana -- told the press.

"It's a special time," added Kate, also 31. "I think any new parent would know what this feeling feels like."

After speaking briefly to the press, William and Kate returned to the hospital before re-emerging minutes later with their son in a car seat.

William secured the seat in the back of a black Range Rover parked outside the hospital, before driving his family back to their home at Kensington Palace.

Kate's sister Pippa was reportedly waiting for them at the palace.

First visitors

The couple had earlier received their first visitors with heir to the throne Prince Charles and Kate's parents Michael and Carole Middleton -- all first-time grandparents -- turning up at the hospital.

Congratulations have poured in from around the globe for the baby, a great-grandchild of Queen Elizabeth II, who will one day reign over Britain and 15 other Commonwealth realms around the world.

The baby remains officially nameless, although bookmakers have picked George and James -- traditional names that hark back to previous kings -- as favorites.

To mark the birth, the Royal Artillery fired a 41-gun salute at London's Green Park and 62 rounds were fired at the Tower of London. Bells at the 11th century Westminster Abbey, where the couple married in April 2011, rang out for more than three hours.

By mid-afternoon, Kate was well enough for a visit from her parents, self-made millionaires who run a party supplies business. They arrived in a humble black London taxi and initially looked bewildered by the sheer scale of the international media presence.

"He's absolutely beautiful. They're both doing very well and we're so thrilled," a beaming Carole Middleton told the media when she had recovered her bearings.

Asked if she would reveal the name or had made any suggestions, Kate’s mother laughed and said: "Absolutely not."

Charles arrived around two hours later with his wife Camilla in a chauffeur-driven limousine.

"Marvelous, thank you very much, absolutely wonderful," said Charles, who earlier in the day had been on a tour of Yorkshire in northern England.

"I'm thrilled and very excited," Charles said during his official visit in Yorkshire.

His second wife, Camilla, spoke of a "wonderfully uplifting moment for the country", adding that Charles would make a "brilliant" grandfather.

Wrapped in the flag

Hordes of TV crews, photographers and royal fans wrapped in British flags had camped outside the hospital for three weeks waiting for the baby, testament to the enduring appeal of the British monarchy and particularly the glamorous William and Kate.

At Buckingham Palace, crowds straining for a glimpse of the official birth announcement on a gold easel in the forecourt were treated to a special edition of the Changing the Guard ceremony.

The Queen's Guards, resplendent in red tunics and bearskin hats, performed Cliff Richard's "Congratulations", to cheers from well-wishers and tourists outside the gates.

The baby will be titled His Royal Highness, Prince (name) of Cambridge -- the blank to be filled in when his name is announced.

William's name was not announced for a week, while the world had to wait a whole month when Charles was born in 1948.

William and Kate did not know the sex of their child until he was born, although the duchess reportedly told a soldier at a St. Patrick's Day parade in March: "I'd like to have a boy and William would like a girl."

It is the first time since 1894 that three direct heirs to the throne have been alive at the same time, and the 87-year-old queen said she was "delighted" at the birth of her third great-grandchild.

William and Kate are hugely popular and have been widely credited with revitalizing the British royals following decades of scandal and the death of William's mother Diana in a car crash in 1997.

Support for the royal family dipped after Diana's death, a year after her divorce from Charles, as the royal family's handling of the aftermath prompted accusations that they were out of touch.

But last year's celebrations of Queen Elizabeth's 60th year on the throne showed support for the monarchy was running at a record high.

Witnessing history

Apart from the media, the event attracted hundreds of well-wishers from the public.

"We're here to witness history, where a future monarch has been born. I just can't wait to see them today," said Maria Scott, a housewife from Newcastle in northern England who had camped outside the hospital since Saturday.

More than 25,300 tweets a minute were sent immediately after news of the birth broke on Monday night, Twitter said, while the hashtag #RoyalBaby was used 900,000 times in the first 24 hours after Kate went into labour.

US President Barack Obama led the international messages of congratulations, which also poured in from Australia, New Zealand, Canada, France, Israel, Japan and Singapore.

The British mass-circulation newspaper the Sun temporarily renamed itself "The Son", and most newspapers issued special supplements.

William and Kate, who met when they were students at university in Scotland about 10 years ago, have officially been known as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge since their wedding.

The couple, who have been living in a cottage in north Wales where William is based as a Royal Air Force helicopter pilot, will eventually take up residence with their baby at Apartment 1A in London's Kensington Palace, William's childhood home, when a 1 million pound ($1.5 million) refurbishment is completed later this year.

Royal experts said the new prince would now be taken out of the public glare.

"Having a baby is a very private moment, and they are a private couple, so the next time we see the baby will be the official photo, and that could be weeks," said Joe Little, managing editor of Majesty magazine. (Additional Reuters reports from Belinda Goldsmith, Peter Griffiths, Li-Mei Hoang, Stephen Addison and Dasha Afanasieva)

Elderly with diabetes 50 percent likelier to have disability

PARIS - Older adults with diabetes are between 50 and 80 percent likelier to have a disability compared to people without the disease, according to a review published on Wednesday.

Researchers at the Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute in Melbourne, Australia, trawled through more than 3,200 previously published studies that explored the link between diabetes and disability.

They narrowed the catch down to 26 studies.

Most of the people in these studies were aged over 65 -- an age category in which Type-2 diabetes, also called adult onset diabetes, predominates.

Disability was defined as either crimped mobility or an impaired ability to perform daily activities such as bathing, eating, using the phone, shopping and using transport.

Lead epidemiologist Anna Peeters said the association between diabetes and disability was long known but until now poorly identified.

The causes remain mysterious, she said.

"It's possible that the high blood glucose concentrations experienced by people with diabetes might lead to chronic muscle inflammation, eventually resulting in physical disability, and some studies have shown that diabetes is associated with rapid and worsening muscle wasting," she said.

"The complications associated with diabetes, such as heart disease, stroke, and kidney disease, can all result in disability.

"As the world's population ages, and diabetes becomes more common, it seems clear that we will see an increased need for disability-related health resources."

The paper appears in the journal The Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology.

According to the UN's World Health Organization (WHO), 347 million people around the world have diabetes, a disease in which the body fails to break down glucose in the blood through the hormone insulin.

Ninety percent of these have the Type 2 form of the disease, which typically shows up in adulthood or late childhood, driven by obesity and a sedentary lifestyle.

Lady Gaga is top earning celebrity under 30: Forbes

NEW YORK – Despite hip surgery that forced the cancellation of part of her tour, Lady Gaga still earned an estimated $80 million in the past year, propelling her to the top of Forbes list of highest earning celebrities under 30 years old.

Canadian pop singer Justin Bieber, who made headlines as much for his antics off stage as on, came in a distant second with an estimated income of $58 million. Singer Taylor Swift was third, pulling in $55 million, about $2 million less than last year when she topped the list.

The Forbes website said Lady Gaga, 27, would have earned more had she not had to cancel some 20 U.S. shows starting in February. Gaga announced earlier this month that she will release her next album “ARTPOP” on November 11.

DJ, songwriter and producer Calvin Harris, who played more than 150 shows from June 2012-June 2013 and earned $46 million, was fourth on the list, and Barbados-born pop star Rihanna rounded out the top five with earnings of $43 million.

To compile the ranking Forbes estimated entertainment-related income for the 12 months from June 2012 through June 2013 by talking to agents, managers, producers and executives.

British singer Adele, who won an Oscar for the theme from the James Bond movie “Skyfall,” was seventh on the list with an estimated $25 million.

Along with singers, two actresses also made the top 10. Best actress Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence, who wowed audiences and critics for her performance in “Silver Linings Playbook” and also appeared in “The Hunger Games,” earned $26 million, which secured her the No. 8 spot, just ahead of fellow actress Kristen Stewart of “Twilight” fame, who had earnings of $22 million.

Six easy makeup tips for pregnant and busy moms

I have approximately an hour and a half to write this article. I have just put my three-month-old daughter down for a nap and her next feeding is in less than two hours. Half of my lunch is sitting on the dining table, and maybe I’ll get to that after this story. I still have a couple of other household and work things to juggle afterwards, a dinner party, then my last feeding for the baby and putting her down for the night. Such is the life I have been thrust into since giving birth to my first child a few months ago. I realize that I’ve humbly joined the ranks of many time-conscious women who are really superheroes-in-disguise.

Gone are the days when I could plan out and think about my look for a particular day, from my clothes, to my accessories, to my shoes, to my hairstyle and makeup. Even in the middle of busy weeks closing a magazine or covering Fashion Week, I would have energy to put thought into most of my appearance and cheat the rest. These days, my criteria is basic: whatever works. I might have a few extra minutes to think about my look—if my baby decides to feed, burp, and take a nap efficiently. But more often than not, I probably won’t have the energy. Not to mention the other more important concerns I can use my brain cells for during those pockets of extra time.

If your daily life sounds similar to mine—or makes mine look like it’s a walk in the park—here are six realistic beauty tips to keep you looking polished and presentable. Because as much as we’d love to look as put-together as mom and fashion icon Victoria Beckham 24/7, we know not everyone has daily access to professional help like she does.

1. Prioritize good skincare.
We don’t always have time to do the full shebang of primer-foundation-concealer-loose powder to correct our skin, and we all know the cornerstone of beauty is pristine skin. Make sure to find a regimen that works for you, and be faithful in applying it every day and every night. That way you can easily get away with very minimal makeup, which will save you lots of time.

2. Expectant moms, learn how to contour and highlight.
Pregnant women will attest that even if they haven’t gained weight on their faces, they still think they have because they feel bloated. Makeup artist for Shu Uemura and mom Cathy Cantada-Dizon says she went through this, which led her to heavily contour her own cheeks. Get yourself a good contour kit or matte bronzer that’s two shades darker than your skintone. Contouring minimizes parts of our face and can create depth. So if you’re feeling extra chubby, try brushing bronzer from the middle of your ear down towards the corners of your mouth, but only until halfway of your cheeks. You can also brush bronzer on your temples, jawline, and create a noseline (from the inner tips of your eyebrows down to the inner portion of your nostrils), when you feel your nose starts looking like a tomato.

Complement contouring with a bit of highlighted cheekbones to really give your     face      more depth and ditch that feeling (or actuality) of a wider face.

3. Cut back on products, too.
“During the course of pregnancy our body temperature changes. Pregnant women feel so hot and sweaty most of the time, so if you’re used to wearing layers of makeup, lessen application so as not to feel irritated,” advises MAC Cosmetics makeup artist and mom of three, Pong Niu. If you can get away with just concealer and pressed powder, do so and save yourself the trouble of that melting feeling under makeup layers. Or switch to a light BB or CC cream in the meantime.

4. Don’t underestimate the power of mascara.
If you literally only have a minute or less, try curling your eyelashes and loading up on black mascara. This will wake up your eyes and make you look like you’re ready to face the day, even if you have yet to get caffeine in your body! If it’s all you have time for, curled eyelashes amplified with mascara already does a lot for your look.

5. Decide on your instantly polished makeup item.
It could be a bold lip, serious eyeliner, or flushed cheeks, this is that one item that makes you look presentable with very little effort. Cantada-Dizon says “[Mine] will always will be eyeliner and mascara. Lots of it. I look tired and haggard without it. Somehow it does brighten up my face and I feel more confident with eyeliner on since my eyes are very chinita.” It all depends on your facial features and your style. When you are pressed for time, this is your go-to look which you won’t have to think about.

Fuchsia, coral, or red lipstick is another easy item you can slick on to instantly look presentable. This is Niu’s pesonal makeup uniform. She recommends MAC lipsticks in Ablaze, Heroine, Silly and Embrace Me. “Nice skin and an outstanding lip color will do the magic,” she says.

6. Get a good concealer and champagne eyeliner.
By lining the inner rims or waterline of your lower lids, it extends the white parts of your eyes and makes you look more awake and alert. Couple that with a creamy, blendable concealer set with loose powder for your eyebags and you’ll hardly have traces of waking up during wee hours of the morning on your face.

Facebook says app for ‘simple’ phones used by 100 million

NEW YORK CITY — US social network giant Facebook said Monday it has surpassed 100 million users a month using an application designed for “simple” mobile phones widely used in developing nations.

Launched two years ago, the “Facebook For Every Phone” app enables people to connect “no matter what kind of mobile device they use,” the company said in a statement.

“Today, millions of people in developing markets like India, Indonesia and the Philippines are relying on this technology to connect with Facebook, without having to purchase a (more expensive) smartphone,” Facebook said.

The application works on more than 3,000 different types of low-cost phones “from almost every handset manufacturer that exists today.”

The app “includes Facebook’s most popular features, such as News Feed, Messenger and Photos,” and allows first-time users to create a new account and find old friends.

As of late March, Facebook reported having 751 million customers using accessing their site on mobile devices, up a whopping 54 percent from one year earlier.

Filipino nurses assisted Kate Middleton in giving birth to the future king of Britain

LONDON--Filipino nurses were among those who assisted Kate Middleton in giving birth to a future king of the United Kingdom, Filipinos working at St. Mary's Hospital told InterAksyon.com on Tuesday morning in London.

A Filipina nurse who requested anonymity said that several Filipino "theatre nurses"--equivalent to nurses assigned to a hospital's operating room--had assisted in Middleton's childbirth on Monday at room 301 of the exclusive Lindo Wing of St. Mary's Hospital.

However, these nurses have been ordered to keep other details of the childbirth to themselves in light of keeping the privacy and security of the royal family.

About 300 Filipino nurses work at St. Mary's Hospital, according to the Filipina nurse interviewed by InterAksyon, adding that Filipinos are "dominant" in terms of number in the said hospital. She herself has been employed at St. Mary's Hospital's admission ward (akin to an accident emergency room) for 13 years now.

"Masaya kaming lahat na dito nanganak si Kate," the Filipina nurse said. (We're all so happy that Kate gave birth in this hospital.)

Besides nurses, the hospital also employs Filipino cleaners, porters, logistics personnel, ambulance service trainers, administrative staff, among others.

At least five other Filipinos working at St. Mary's Hospital said Filipino nurses were indeed assigned at Lindo Wing.

For Jonard Cartagena, an ambulance service trainer in St. Mary's Hospital, the publicity and worldwide attention brought by the royal baby's will definitely help boost sales of retailers of memorabilia and souvenirs that will ride on the event, as well as lure in more tourists.

"London is back in the map," said Cartagena, who has been working in the UK the past 26 years.

More than 200,000 Filipinos live and work in the UK and most of them is in and around London, the capital.

Intel to launch low-power version of powerful server chips

SAN FRANCISCO — Chipmaker Intel Corp said it is planning to launch a low-power version of its brawny server processors, potentially heading off competitors hoping to expand into the data center with energy efficient-chips based on smartphone technology.

Intel has already launched a line of its Atom mobile chips that are tweaked to work as low-power server chips.

The announcement, which was made on Monday at an event with industry analysts and media, means Intel will go a step further by offering a low-power version of its powerful Xeon processor with built-in features including connectivity and memory.

It also reflects the willingness of CEO Brian Krzanich, who took over in May, to make major changes to how Intel approaches its different markets.

By launching lower-power chips for servers, Intel is trying to stay ahead of Advanced Micro Devices, Applied Micro Circuits Corp and other smaller rivals hoping to disrupt the top chipmaker’s dominance of the data center with upcoming components designed with low-power smartphone technology licensed from ARM Holdings.

“Intel’s announcements demonstrate they will try to defend their turf against ARM-based servers and specialty processors,” said Pat Moorhead, an analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy. “Up until today, it was a bit of a guessing game for Intel that today has at least 95-percent server market share.”

Diane Bryant, in charge of Intel’s data center business, said the new component, based on the upcoming Broadwell version of Intel’s Xeon high-performance chips, will launch next year.

Energy-sipping chips similar to those used in smartphones and tablets lack the horsepower of traditional server processors made by Intel. But data centers that combine many low-power chips instead of just a few heavy-duty processors may provide more computing power for less money and use less electricity.

Microservers have yet to gain serious traction with traditional corporate customers like banks and manufacturers, and the potential size of the market remains unclear.

The new version of Broadwell is part of Intel’s move to integrate more features onto its chips, like memory and graphics. “System on chips,” as they are known, are already widely used in smartphones and tablets, but less in the data center. Intel is also beginning to make “system on chips” for laptops.

Intel dominates the PC and server markets, but it was slow to design chips for the mobile market, where chips using technology from ARM Holdings have become ubiquitous.

It's a baby boy for Prince William and wife Kate

LONDON - Prince William's wife Kate gave birth to a baby boy on Monday, providing Britain's royal family with a future king in an event that had been anticipated around the world, Kensington palace said.

Crowds cheered and rushed towards the gates of Buckingham Palace as it was announced that the Duchess of Cambridge had produced a male heir weighing 8 lbs 6 oz (3.8 kilos).

The baby will be third in line to the throne and in the direct line of succession after head of state Queen Elizabeth II's eldest son and heir Prince Charles, and then his eldest son William.

"Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge was safely delivered of a son at 4:24 p.m. (1524 GMT)," Kensington Palace said in a statement just over four hours afterwards.

"The baby weighs 8lbs 6oz. The Duke of Cambridge was present for the birth."

"Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well and will remain in hospital overnight," said the statement from the Royal Household, which sidestepped tradition to announce the birth with a press release.

"The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry and members of both families have been informed and are delighted with the news," it read.

The boy's name was not revealed, but he will be known as Prince of Cambridge.

The former Kate Middleton was admitted to the private Lindo Wing of St. Mary's Hospital, Paddington, central London, at around 6:00 a.m. in the midst of a summer thunderstorm.

The birth was later officially announced to great cheers on a golden easel placed in the forecourt of Buckingham Palace.

US President Barack Obama's spokesman had earlier said that he and the first family were "waiting with anticipation" for the birth and "wish the family and all of Great Britain well on this pending momentous occasion."

William, at his wife's bedside, has been on annual leave and will take two weeks' paternity leave from his military job as a Royal Air Force search and rescue pilot.

Both mother and son were "doing well" and will remain in hospital overnight while the queen was "delighted with the news", according to the palace.

The birth came later than widely expected, adding to the sense of anticipation that has built up ever since William, whose mother Diana died in a Paris car crash in 1997, and the former Kate Middleton married with huge fanfare in April 2011.

Bookmakers had largely backed a girl baby, after Kate had said they did not know its sex.

The fact that it is a boy relieves the need to rush through new succession laws across the 16 Commonwealth realms, which would mean that a girl could no longer be overtaken by any future younger brothers.

The royal couple used a back entrance to the hospital when they arrived at 6:00 a.m. (0500 GMT), missing the ranks of international media who have camped outside the hospital for three weeks.

The prince was born in the same hospital wing and media from across the globe are hoping for a repeat of the scene in 1982 when Charles and his first wife Diana brought out the baby to show him off to the world.

Royal fanatics gathering outside the hospital also took their excitement to a new level.

"I'm so excited. Like in a washing machine. Never been so high!" said John Loughrey, who has slept outside the hospital for seven nights, wrapped in a British flag.

The new arrival is Queen Elizabeth's third great-grandchild, and a first grandchild for Charles.

It ensures that there are three generations of heirs to the crown of the United Kingdom of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland -- a nuclear-armed UN Security Council permanent member and the world's sixth biggest economy.

The queen was seen arriving back at Buckingham Palace from Windsor Castle, just outside the capital, in mid-afternoon but other royals went about their usual business.

Charles, the current heir, was visiting York in northern England, where members of the public shouted "Congratulations!".

Smiling, he replied: "Do you know something I don't?"

Charles, who turns 65 in November, joked: "I'm very grateful indeed for the kind wishes for my rather slowly-approaching grandfatherhood."

Prime Minister David Cameron sent his best wishes to the couple and the "whole country is excited."

The pregnancy was announced in December when Kate was admitted to hospital with severe morning sickness.

At the Lindo Wing, a standard room and normal delivery -- which Kate is hoping for -- costs £4,965 ($7,600, 5,800 euros) for the first 24 hours, plus consultants' fees which can reach around £6,000.

The duchess is being tended by a top medical team led by the queen's gynecologist Alan Farthing and his predecessor Marcus Setchell, obstetrician Guy Thorpe-Beeston, and consultant neonatologist Sunit Godambe

On the pavement opposite the hospital entrance, around 30 presenters lined up in a row delivering live broadcasts and clips, with photographers and journalists filling out the scene.

There has been a betting frenzy on the name of the royal newborn with bookmakers favouring a George and James for the top boys' names. With a report from Belinda Goldsmith, Reuters
