Yahoo! fuels fresh debate on telecommuting

WASHINGTON — Telecommuting, a growing trend in the US workplace, is coming under fresh scrutiny following news that Yahoo! is curbing the practice.

The trend of working from home has been gaining steam for decades, as part of a workplace evolution which allows greater family-work balance and saves energy and commuting costs.

An internal Yahoo! memo from chief executive Marissa Meyer posted this week by the Wall Street Journal said employees will be required to come to their offices to “feel the energy and buzz” of the workplace.

“Speed and quality are often sacrificed when we work from home. We need to be one Yahoo!, and that starts with physically being together,” according to the report.

Asked about the memo, a Yahoo! spokesman said Tuesday, “We don’t discuss internal matters,” but essentially confirmed the news by saying: “This isn’t a broad industry view on working from home — this is about what is right for Yahoo!, right now.”

The shift counters the overall trend: some 53 percent of US employers offered flexible work options in 2012, according to the Society for Human Resource Management. That compares with 48 percent in 2007.

A 2011 report by the US Labor Department found 24 percent of employed Americans reporting that they work at least some hours at home each week.

The trend is particularly noticeable in IT firms, where companies take advantage of technology to have virtual access to what they would have at the office.

Cisco Systems, which develops virtual private networks for remote access, said 40 percent of its employees are not in the same city as their manager, and the average employee telecommutes two days a week.

IBM, another strong telework advocate, said 29 percent of its 128,000 employees participate in a flex-work or work at home program, and that in 2011, in the US alone, this saved 6.4 million gallons of fuel and avoided more than 50,000 metric tons of carbon emissions.

The move by Yahoo! “goes against the grain of where a lot of organizations are going today,” said Cindy Auten, general manager of Mobile Work Exchange, a public-private partnership that promotes telework.

“This is especially important in the tech industry; they are focused on recruiting and retaining the best and brightest.”

Auten said telework is “a huge recruitment and retention tool,” seen as a near necessity at some firms now, with the option offered in 85 percent of the employers rated as “best places to work.”

She said telecommuting often improves productivity, but that in cases where it fails, “it may uncover other weaknesses” in an organization.

The Yahoo! decision drew criticism from others, including Virgin Group founder Richard Branson, who said in a tweet: “Perplexed by Yahoo! stopping remote working. Give people the freedom of where to work & they will excel.”

Kelly Ann Collins, a Washington marketing consultant who blogs on work and family issues, called the Yahoo! move confusing.

“High-tech companies like Yahoo! that are completely digital have the ability to make the lives of their employees so much better,” she wrote.

“Telecommuting is not only efficient, it is better for team morale and employee retention. It makes for happier employees that (actually like to) produce top-notch work.”

But some analysts say Yahoo!’s move could be positive, even if it drives away those seeking a more flexible environment.

“Yahoo! is in a creative innovation race and they need to get back to their roots,” said John Challenger, chief executive of the consultancy Challenger, Gray & Christmas.

“There are great benefits to telecommuting, and there are more companies that need to do more telecommuting, but (Yahoo!) is a case where they are seeking to pull themselves out from a position where they have been behind the curve.”

Even before the Yahoo! news, some data suggested telecommuting was not the panacea it was cracked up to be.

The Labor Department report found that telecommuters often ended up working more hours than if they had come into the office, effectively doing overtime work without compensation.

“The ability of employees to work at home may actually allow employers to raise expectations for work availability during evenings and weekends and foster longer workdays and workweeks,” the report said.

But Challenger said Yahoo! will not be able to turn back the clock completely, and that some employees are likely to do some of their work from home, despite the new policy,

“Some people have always worked from home,” he said. “And now technology allows them to work on the weekends, at night or on vacation. There is no boundary between work and home anymore.”

Beijing restaurant owner won't apologize to Pinoys and Vietnamese - but takes down inflammatory sign

BEIJING - A defiant Beijing restaurant manager refused to apologize Thursday despite removing an inflammatory sign barring citizens of states in maritime disputes with China, along with dogs, following an international outcry.

The notice in the window of the Beijing Snacks restaurant read: "This shop does not receive the Japanese, the Philippines, the Vietnamese and dog(s)" in both Chinese and English.

But despite taking down the sign after accusations of racism, the manager said he had no regrets and would not apologize for any offense caused.

Images of the sign went viral in Vietnam and were splashed across newspapers in the Philippines on Wednesday. Both are involved in bitter territorial disputes with China over islands in the South China Sea.

The manager, surnamed Wang, said it was taken down "because it was a lot of bother."

"I don't have any regrets," he told AFP. "I was just getting too many phone calls about it."

He seemed surprised at the attention it had generated but said he would not apologize, suggesting it may have been misinterpreted.

"Maybe people misunderstood our meaning ... it only said we would not serve customers from those countries," he said.

The sign's wording was particularly inflammatory as it recalled China's colonial era, when British-owned establishments barred Chinese from entering.

A sign outside a Shanghai park supposedly reading "No Dogs and Chinese allowed" became part of Communist propaganda, and was featured in the 1972 Bruce Lee film "Fists of Fury" - but many historical experts say no such notice ever existed.

The restaurant sign provoked an outcry in Vietnam and the Philippines, generating thousands of posts on Vietnamese social networking sites and newspaper comment threads.

Filipinos greeted the photo with a mixture of fury and amusement. "Blatant racism at Beijing Restaurant," journalist Veronica Pedrosa wrote in one widely shared tweet.

China and Japan have a separate acrimonious dispute over islands in the East China Sea, and ongoing disagreements about Japan's colonial past.

The cramped establishment's specialty is soup made with pork offal and gravy-soaked biscuits.

"This is what old Beijingers like to eat," a white-hatted chef said.

5 mental disorders have common gene problem - study

PARIS - Five major psychiatric disorders share a common problem in several faulty genes, according to the biggest study of its kind published on Thursday.

In the widest trawl yet of genetic mutations linked with mental disorders, US-led researchers looked through the DNA code of 33,332 people with autism, attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder or schizophrenia.

Their genomes were matched against 27,888 "controls," or people who did not have these illnesses, in a bid to spot tiny changes in genes.

The five diseases have common risk factors in flaws on Chromosomes 2 and 10, and in two genes that help regulate the flow of calcium in brain cells, the investigators found.

One of the genes, called CACNA1C, has previously been fingered in bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.

The study, published in The Lancet, says the common genes are part of a much wider picture and do not by themselves explain the causes of these disorders or why their symptoms vary.

In addition, the gene samples examined by the Psychiatrics Genomics Consortium all came people from European ancestry, and the results may be different for people of different heritage, it said.

But, it added, the findings are a useful step towards better diagnosis of these illnesses.

Psychiatric disorders are difficult to categorise because symptoms can be hazy or contradictory, and little is known about their underlying cause. Environmental factors also play a part.

Previous genome comparisons have found intriguing common ground in an array of so-called auto-immune disorders, including arthritis, Crohn's disease, and psoriasis.

Safeway to expand BPO operations in Philippines

A leading US retailer is “keen on expanding” its business process outsourcing (BPO) operations in the Philippines, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) said on Wednesday.

In a statement, the DTI said top executives of Safeway Inc arrived this month “to conduct due diligence relative to its plan of expanding its business operations in the country.”

"The team that came here was only from their BPO area," Trade Secretary Gregory L. Domingo said in text message when asked if Safeway has also expressed interest in retail operations here.

Safeway is said to be the second-biggest supermarket chain in North America. The Pleasanton, California-based retailer has a Philippine affiliate, Safeway Philtech Inc, whose BPO operations have served over 1,700 stores and corporate offices in Canada and the US for a decade.

Safeway Philtech provides application development and enhancements, application support and maintenance, and technology and infrastructure support services.

“Top-ranked executives of Safeway were particularly upbeat on taking advantage of opportunities in the country’s BPO industry and looked at BPO activities that can add significant value to their global operations,” the DTI said.

“DTI-Foreign Trade Service Corps (FTSC) Assistant Secretary Josephine Romero personally met the [Safeway] team and urged them to expand their operations in the country and join the rosters of foreign companies that are reaping the benefits of a vibrant Philippine economy,” the DTI added.

Jennifer Lawrence’s clothes from ‘Silver Linings’ up for auction

LOS ANGELES – Clothing worn by Jennifer Lawrence in her Oscar-winning role as an outspoken young widow in comedy “Silver Linings Playbook” went up for auction on Tuesday, just two days after the Academy Awards ceremony.

Memorabilia dealer Nate D. Sanders put the skin-tight white dance pants, winter coat and sports bra Lawrence wore in the film up for sale in the online auction that will end on Thursday.

The items are expected to fetch between $500 and $1,500 following the 22-year-old’s Best Actress win on Sunday.

“She’s now on the record for having an Academy Award, which definitely gives it (the items) status now,” said Laura Yntema, spokeswoman for auction house Nate D. Sanders.

“The Hunger Games” star also won awards from the Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild in January for her “Silver Linings Playbook” performance.

Five items, either worn by Lawrence or from her wardrobe on the film, are up for auction with starting bids at $100.

They include the custom-tailored skin-tight white pants Lawrence wore during the film’s climactic ballroom dance scene with co-star Bradley Cooper.

The black, full-length double-breasted Moda International wool coat is a size six. The teal sports bra by Gap Body will be sold together with an extra-small blue Threads 4 Thought long-sleeved shirt.

The auction also has nine clothing items either worn or from the wardrobe of Cooper, and two items from the wardrobe of supporting actor Chris Tucker.

Movie studios often hand off costumes to auction houses, where even small outfits can fetch high prices from fans and collectors.

Microsoft releases Internet Explorer 10 browser for more users

SEATTLE — Microsoft Corp released Internet Explorer 10 to millions of new users on Tuesday, hoping the latest version of its market-leading browser will win back customers who have migrated to Google Inc’s Chrome and help it establish a toe-hold in the fast-growing mobile browser market.

The world’s largest software maker, whose Internet Explorer browser elbowed out Netscape Navigator in the early days of the web, said IE 10 is 20 percent faster at downloading sites than its predecessor IE 9 and allows for touch-screen commands.

The browser has been available since late October for users of Windows 8, Microsoft’s new touch-friendly operating system, but now becomes available for the 700 million or so users of Windows 7.

Microsoft is hoping PC and laptop users will like the new browser enough to consider buying Windows 8 tablets rather than Apple Inc’s iPad, which does not run Internet Explorer.

Various versions of Microsoft’s venerable Internet Explorer franchise still dominate desktop browsing, with 55 percent of the PC browser market all together. But it has in recent years lost share to Mozilla’s Firefox and Google’s Chrome, which now account for 20 percent and 17 percent respectively, according to tech research firm NetMarketShare.

IE 10 running on Windows 8 has got generally good reviews, and has been hailed as the best version of Internet Explorer yet, but it has not been considered decisively superior to Chrome or Firefox.

In the smaller but faster-growing mobile browser market, Apple’s Safari is the runaway leader with 61 percent, owing to the popularity of its iPhones and iPads while Google’s Android browser has 21 percent.

Tablets running Windows 8, including Microsoft’s own Surface devices, have not sold strongly since they were launched last October, restricting IE 10′s popularity so far. Only 2.3 percent of computer users are running Windows 8, according to NetMarketShare.

HP sells webOS operating system to LG Electronics

SAN FRANCISCO – Hewlett-Packard Co said on Monday it will sell the webOS operating system to South Korea’s LG Electronics Inc, unloading the smartphone software it acquired through a $1.2 billion acquisition of Palm in 2010.

LG will use the operating software, used in now-defunct Palm smartphones years ago, for its “smart” or Internet-connected TVs. The Asian electronics company had worked with HP on WebOS before offering to buy it outright.

Under the terms of their agreement, LG acquires the operating software’s source code, associated documentation, engineering talent, various associated websites, and licenses under HP’s intellectual property including patents covering fundamental operating system and user interface technology.

HP will retain the patents and all the technology relating to the cloud service of webOS, HP Chief Operating Officer Bill Veghte said in an interview.

“As we looked at it, we saw a very compelling IP that was very unique in the marketplace,” he said, adding that HP has already had a partnership with LG on webOS before the deal was announced.

“As a result of this collaboration, LG offered to acquire the webOS operating system technology,” Veghte said.

Skott Ahn, President and CTO, LG Electronics, said the company will incorporate the operating system in the Smart TV line-up first “and then hopefully all the other devices in the future.”

Both companies declined to reveal the terms of the deal.

LG will keep the WebOS team in Silicon Valley and, for now, will continue to be based out of HP offices, Ahn said.

HP opened its webOS mobile operating system to developers and companies in 2012 after trying to figure out how to recoup its investment in Palm, one of the pioneers of the smartphone industry.

The company had tried to build products based on webOS with the now-defunct TouchPad tablet its flagship product.

HP launched and discontinued the TouchPad in 2010, a little over a month after it hit store shelves with costly fanfare after it saw poor demand for a tablet priced on par with Apple’s dominant iPad.

WebOS is widely viewed as a strong mobile platform, but has been assailed for its paucity of applications, an important consideration while choosing a mobile device.

Unit of Andrew Tan holding firm seeks creditor consent for change in debt terms

MANILA - A wholly owned unit of Alliance Global Group Inc is seeking the consent of its creditors to amend the terms and conditions of its Singapore Exchange-listed notes.

In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange, the holding firm of Andrew Tan said Alliance Global Group Cayman Islands Inc is inviting holders of its $500-million guaranteed debt papers to approve the proposal to amend the financial covenants and related definitions in the terms and conditions of the notes in the trust deed dated August 18, 2010.

Alliance Global is modifying the terms to "afford greater flexibility for the issuer, the guarantor and its subsidiaries to carry out their business strategies in light of expected expansion and investment opportunities in the Philippines in the near-term; make other necessary clarificatory modifications; and generally align the financial covenants and related provisions more closely to market standard forms."

The Alliance Global unit will seek the approval of note holders on March 22.

The listed Philippine conglomerate guaranteed the notes, which have a coupon rate of 6.5 percent and will mature in 2017.

Alliance Global will hike its capital spending to more than P40 billion in 2013 to bankroll the expansion of its real estate, food and beverage, quick service restaurants and tourism ventures.

BB Gandanghari has a lover in the US but says he broke his promise to visit her this month

BB Gandanghari had been mum about her relationship status for the longest time, but she was in such a good mood at a recent press conference that she finally opened up about having left her heart in the States.

“Magde-deny sana ako,” BB said with a laugh. “Magaling siyang magluto,” she said of her boyfriend.

And?

“Baka nga wala na kami,” she quipped.  “At a time like this, when you feel so pressured (at work), you just want somebody to be there, na makakausap mo.”

Love is bound to disappoint, be it in relationships that are unconventional or otherwise. The guy in question had promised to join BB here in Manila this month but didn’t make good on his word.

“I was really expecting na darating siya ng Feb, pero hindi nangyari so medyo na-disappoint ako. Mahirap mag-expect tapos hindi mangyayari,” she said.

Good thing that there is her second foray into theater to think about and occupy her time, something that does not disappoint like lovers that fall short on their promises.

In this latest restaging of “Halik Ng Tarantula,” adapted from the film and Broadway versions of “Kiss of the Spider Woman” by famous novelist Manuel Puig, BB plays both Molina, a persecuted gay inmate, and Irena, the spiderwoman, originally played by Sonia Braga in the film version and Vanessa Williams in the Broadway musical version.

BB is aware that Hollywood actor William Hurt played Molina in the 1985 film version and walked off with an Oscar for his performance. “Pinanood ko siya nu’ng malaman ko na gagawin ko na ‘yung play. Usually takot ako na manood ng ibang actors who had played a role na gagawin ko rin, pero, ito, hindi ako natakot panoorin ‘yung movie. Na-curious lang ako kung paano ginawa ni William Hurt. I’ll attack it differently,” she revealed.

“Kiss of the Spiderwoman” offers the kind of challenge that interests BB. “Basically kasi it’s a two-character play so you have to be able to hold people’s attention for two hours. The glory there is kapag nakita mong nag-enjoy ang mga tao,” she said.

“Halik ng Tarantula,” translated in Filipino by the late playwright Rene Villanueva, tells of two inmates — Valentin, a political prisoner, and Molina, a homosexual fond of recalling scenes from old movies he has seen — sharing the same cell in a Buenos Aires prison in the ’70s.

The part of Valentin is as integral as Molina’s. Three acting newbies have been tapped to tackle the role, namely Jet Alcantara, Xyrus Cruz, and Jovic Monsod.

Cruz, as of this writing, had backed out from the production because he allegedly didn’t see it necessary to go out on “group bonding sessions” with BB to get a feel of the play.

That is, however, a whole different story. BB said she and the production group had thought of getting more seasoned performers for the role of Valentin but for various reasons, decided on hiring acting tyros. “Physically, it’s the eyes. And then there’s the attitude towards work, ‘yung dedication nila,” she answered when asked how they picked her leading men in the play.

Because “Halik ng Tarantula” is a largely political play with sexual undertones, BB admitted that there are scenes that require her and her leading man to engage in acts of intimacy.

“Sabihin na nating I’m very open kung ano ‘yung requirements ng role. Nakakatuwa itong mga lalaki (who will alternate in the role of Valentin), kasi kaswal na lang sa kanila kapag nagri-rehearsal na magtanong, ‘Ito na po ba ‘yung scene na naka-boxers na lang? Naka-briefs na lang?’ Ang ganda kasi nung script kaya mai-imbibe mo talaga ‘yung character,” she shared.

“Halik ng Tarantula” will run from Match 7 to 9 at Teatrino Promenade Arcade in Greenhills.

Comelec to disqualify indelible ink supplier for failure to meet technical specs

MANILA, Philippines – The Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Tuesday announced the disqualification of the winning bidder for the supply of 520,000 bottles of indelible ink after the company failed to meet technical and chemical specifications.

This means that the second lowest bidder will qualify for the supply of indelible ink after PhilTint and Color Specialist Inc. failed in the post-qualification process, Comelec Chairman Sixto Brillantes Jr. said.

The contract was for P72.3 million.

If they don’t follow the requirements specified in the bid documents, this is a ground for disqualification, Brillantes said, referring to PhilTint samples that were erased from the finger after solvents were applied.

Citing the procurement law, Brillantes said the Comelec is allowed to choose the next lowest bidders to present samples for testing until such time that it finds one that can stand against application of any solvents.

Earlier, former Comelec lawyer Melchor Magdamo said PhilTint and Color Specialist Inc. has “controversial roots traceable” to OTC Paper Supply, the supplier of P690-million worth of ballot secrecy folders used in the first automated election in 2010. At the time, the Comelec scuttled its planned purchase of the overpriced folders costing P380 each.

Magdamo asked Comelec to closely monitor the procurement of indelible ink, indicating possible irregularity in the bid.

Acting on this information, Brillantes said the second lowest bidder will be asked to present the samples of indelible ink for testing to the Bids and Awards Committee in a post-qualification process before awarding the project. The next lowest bidders will follow.

Asked if the second lowest bidder is eligible for the procurement of indelible ink if the winning bidder has been disqualified, Brillantes said, “Yes.”

“We will just declare the second lowest bidder as the winning bidder, lalabas na siya ang (he will come out as) lowest bidder, and it will be posted,” Brillantes said.

The bidding rules state that, “In the event the samples of bidders with LCB (lowest calculated bid) did not pass the technical evaluation, the bidder with the second lowest LCB shall undergo post-qualification processes and testing of its sample, and so on and so forth until the lowest calculated responsive bid is finally determined.”

The same rules require that indelible ink must “contain at least 7% of the silver nitrate. The stain on the nail, cuticle, and the first joint of the finger (second distal phalanx) must not be removed completely by any of the solvents specified in Section VII of the Bidding Documents; otherwise, the bidder would be post-disqualified for submitting non-responsive technical bids in the form of samples.”

Go Nuts Donuts, Highlands Coffee tie up to take on bigger rivals

MANILA -  Filipino brand Go Nuts Donuts is tying up with Vietnam's Highlands Coffee so they can take on bigger rivals.

In a briefing on Tuesday, Tina Trillana-Lagdameo, owner and marketing manager of The Donut People Inc, said the company has partnered with Highlands Coffee to "capitalize on the numerous synergies between the two companies." Part of this is selling Go Nuts Donuts in the cafe chain.

Go Nuts Donuts is owned by the De Ocampo and Trillana families, who introduced Coney Island Ice Cream and Whammos in the Philippine market. IP Ventures Group owns the master franchise of Highlands Coffee and bought 40 percent of the donut company in June last year.

According to Lagdameo, their unique value proposition is they know the Filipino palate, since her maternal family has been in the food business for 30 years.

Aside from this, Go Nuts Donuts are priced lower than the competition but "not that cheap" as not to be in the same league as its foreign counterparts.

Prior to Go Nuts Donuts' entry in December 2003, the market was dominated by Mister Donut and Dunkin' Donuts, both American brands. Ten years after, Go Nuts Donuts' competitors now include Krispy Kreme, another American brand, and J.Co Donuts of Indonesia.

When flour prices went up a couple of years ago, Go Nuts Donuts decided to absorb the pain and let margins take the hit rather than hike prices. Thankfully, flour prices have stabilized and the company has kept its prices steady for two years, Lagdameo said.

"Our customers are price-sensitive and if we increase our price, there would be some kind of fallout," she said, adding that the company plans to keep to the broad B market.

This is the same value proposition that Highlands Coffee offers. Michael N. Lacy, IP Ventures Inc Retail Group chief executive advisor, said the best arabica coffee from Brazil is four times the price of the best robusta coffee from Vietnam.

Vietnam now is the second-biggest coffee producer in the world after Brazil.

"Because it is grown in Asia, the cost of importing it to the Philippines is substantially less. That means we win on quality and we win on price," Lacy said. This would be more pronounced once the Asean economic integration starts by 2015, which would spell lower tariffs on commodities coming from the Philippines' neighbors.

Some of Highlands Coffee's competitors source their coffee from different parts of the world, which makes their prices variable, Lacy said. A no-frills latte from Highlands Coffee is under a hundred pesos, at least P10 cheaper than rivals.

Drinking high-end coffee is aspirational and some would go to coffee shops to relax and to check emails. Lacy said just going into the coffee shop to do that is a product in itself, just like what some of Highlands Coffee's competitors offer. To trump that, Highlands Coffee is offering free Internet courtesy of its sister company, Netopia, the country's biggest Internet cafe network.

Aside from Go Nuts Donuts, Highlands Coffee would also be offering other food products in the next six months so customers can have a wider range of choices depending on the time of the day. They intend to go 24/7 in some of its branches where there are business process outsourcing firms nearby, such as in Alphaland Southgate Tower in Makati.

The coffee company now has 10 stores and would be opening at least six Highlands Coffee-Netopia hybrid stores nationwide this year, some in Cebu, Davao and Cagayan de Oro. For Go Nuts Donuts, at least six stand-alone stores are in the pipeline, most in Luzon.

To keep it edge over its foreign competitors, Highlands Coffee would be opening stores in places "where there won't be Starbucks in it," Lacy said.

He said Highlands Coffee is strong in "unlikely" places such as Lucena City, where the company already has two branches. He said the Philippines may look saturated with coffee shops but it still has enough room to grow. In the US, a person goes in a coffee shop an average of 17 times a month while in the Philippines it is only four times a month.

Go Nuts Donuts and Highlands Coffee are banking on the robust consumer spending and the fast economic growth so Filipinos can afford luxuries such as high-end beverages and impulse purchases, as Lagdameo calls it.

In the next five years, Go Nuts Donuts intends to have 50 branches nationwide while IP Ventures would like to increase its stores from 200 across all brands (Highlands Coffee, Kitaro, Netopia) to 1,000.

Anne Curtis reveals secret of ‘provocative’ outfit as MTRCB orders ‘ASAP’ probe

No, it was not a wardrobe malfunction.
Moments after the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board ordered an investigation of the high-slit black dress she wore on “ASAP 18″ on Sunday, Anne Curtis took to Twitter and Instagram late Tuesday afternoon to clear the air about her controversial attire during her song number on “ASAP 18″ on Sunday

Her post reads:

“TAAAADAAA! I present to you the controversial @boomita (Twitter handle of designer Boom Sason) outfit I wore for my birthday number on ASAP.

“As you can see, we have a bodysuit with a hidden tangga (sic) to make way for the sky high slit skirt. It is made out of 2 pieces. In fact the “tangga” is made out of swimsuit material which Boom Sason is also known for making. I was completely protected.

“It may have seemed like a wardrobe malfunction to many but I can assure you, after making the mistake of not securing myself once I wouldn’t let that happen to me again. :) So to settle all your minds I just had to post this.

“Thank you to everyone that was concerned! To everyone that’s trying to make an issue out of it! Thank you! ABS-CBN News just told me it’s their most clicked on video on their site ever!

“Just relax everyone! Wearing a tangga is no newbie in the industry! It’s been around since the 80′s :) ”

Her explanation came two hours after the MTRCB announced on its Twitter account that it had summoned the show’s producers to “a gender-sensitivity investigation” over that same outfit.

To celebrate her 28th birthday on “ASAP”, Anne sang Rihanna’s “Diamonds” wearing a black gown with a slit so high it suggested she was wearing no underwear.

At the end of the song, after she was drenched in fake rain showers, the slit parted enough to expose her crotch area, although it happened for only a second and might have been missed by most viewers.

Most netizens who have seen videos of the number on YouTube believed she was not wearing any underwear during her performance.

Just two weeks ago, the MTRCB put “ASAP’s” rival program, GMA’s “Party Pilipinas”, on a six-month probation for what it called “a sexually charged dance number” involving Lovi Poe and Rocco Nacino.

Netizens believe Anne Curtis had no undies in birthday number on ‘ASAP’

The online discussions regarding the show-stopping number by Anne Curtis on “ASAP 18” on Sunday have already shifted from the obvious question of whether or not she was wearing any underwear underneath the high-slit black gown she wore on her production number of Rihanna’s “Diamonds”.

Although many have given their thumbs up to the sizzling song number, not a few people were left wondering if the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board should step in and impose the same sanctions they had imposed on “Party Pilipinas” early this month.

When he first assumed the position of MTRCB chairman last October, Atty. Eugenio “Toto” Villareal told InterAksyon that the regulatory body is very strict when it conducts the post-telecast reviews of live shows. “If there are violations then there will be sanctions but due process is always strictly observed in such cases,” he vowed.

In the case of “Party Pilipinas”, the MTRCB found enough grounds to place the show on a six-month probation following a “sexually charged” dance number on its January 27 broadcast in which Lovi Poe and Rocco Nacino simulated the sex act on a propped-up bed and also while suspended by a mobile harness several feet above the stage.

While Anne Curtis’ number is not exactly in the same league, it was nonetheless quite provocative as she also got drenched in fake rain showers towards the end of the song. All throughout, the birthday girl had her fans wondering if all she had under her gown was her birthday suit.

And for a second after she finished the song — at the 3:19 mark on the YouTube video supplied by ABS-CBN News — the absence of underwear appeared to have been laid bare for all to see… or not.

Many fans believe she did go commando, although at least one Facebook user, Eric John Silva, thought she was wearing “see-through leggings with her stockings on”.

“Daring naman lagi si Anne,” noted Twitter user Mac Chan KARO. Back in 2010, Anne had what fans called a “swimsuit malfunction” that resulted in an equally controversial “nipple slip” in another production number for “ASAP” that took place in Boracay.

Panel questions value of calcium, vitamin D pills

WASHINGTON (AP) — Popping calcium and vitamin D pills in hopes of strong bones? Healthy older women should not bother with relatively low-dose dietary supplements, say new recommendations from a U.S. government advisory group.

Both nutrients are crucial for healthy bones and specialists advise getting as much as possible from a good diet. The body also makes vitamin D from sunshine. If an older person has a vitamin deficiency or bone-thinning osteoporosis, doctors often prescribe higher-than-normal doses.

But for otherwise healthy postmenopausal women, adding modest supplements to their diet — about 400 international units of D and 1,000 milligrams of calcium — do not prevent broken bones but can increase the risk of kidney stones, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force said Monday.

It is not clear if those doses offer bone protection if taken before menopause, or if they help men's bones, the guidelines said.

What about higher-dose supplements that have become more common recently? There's not enough evidence to tell if they would prevent fractures, either, in an otherwise healthy person, the panel concluded. It urged more research to settle the issue.

It's a confusing message considering that for years, calcium and vitamin D supplements have been widely considered an insurance policy against osteoporosis, with little down side to taking them.

"Regrettably, we don't have as much information as we would like to have about a substance that has been around a long time and we used to think we understood," said Dr. Virginia Moyer of the Baylor College of Medicine, who heads the task force. "Turns out, there's a lot more to learn."

The main caution: These recommendations aren't for people at high risk of weak bones, including older adults who have previously broken a bone and are at risk for doing so again, said Dr. Sundeep Khosla of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research. Those people should consult a doctor, said Khosla, a bone specialist at the Mayo Clinic who wasn't part of the panel's deliberations.

Calcium and vitamin D work together, and you need a lifetime of both to build and maintain strong bones. Vitamin D also is being studied for possibly preventing cancer and certain other diseases, something that Monday's guidelines don't address and that other health groups have cautioned isn't yet proven.

For now, national standards advise the average adult to get about 1,000 mg of calcium, 1,300 for postmenopausal women, every day. For vitamin D, the goal is 600 IUs of vitamin D every day, moving to 800 after age 70, according to the Institute of Medicine, which set those levels in 2010. The nutrients can come from various foods, including orange juice fortified with calcium and D; dairy foods such as milk, yogurt and cheese; certain fish including salmon; and fortified breakfast cereals. Harder to measure is how much vitamin D the body also produces from sunshine.

Most people should get enough calcium from food, said Mayo's Khosla. But while he cautions against too high doses, he frequently tells his patients to take a multivitamin because it's harder to get vitamin D from food and during the winter.

While supplement science gets sorted out, the task force's Moyer advises healthy seniors to exercise — proven to shore up bones and good for the rest of the body, too.

PSE among best stock markets in 2012

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Stock Exchange ranked third globally among top performing bourses last year in terms of domestic market capitalization, PSE reported on Tuesday.

Citing a report from the World Federation of Exchanges, the local bourse said that it was only outpaced by the stock exchanges in Turkey and Thailand after posting a 38.9 percent expansion in 2012. WFE is composed of 50 bourses all over the world.

“Ranking among the top markets around the world is a feat which I think all Filipinos can be proud of as we are pitted against the best of the best markets in these global rankings. This is a testament to what we have been saying that the Philippines is now indeed in the global radar for investments and these numbers prove our worth as a viable investment destination,” PSE President and Chief Executive Officer Hans Sicat said.

The report likewise noted that the PSE ranked third after the Saudi Stock Exchange and the Bermuda Stock Exchange after posting a 25.3-percent growth in the value trading turnover. It also placed fourth in terms of trades growth and fifth in terms of broad market index growth.

In 2011, PSE also ranked first in the growth of its broad market index, third in domestic market capitalization and fourth in trading turnover among 51 stock exchanges. PSE added that among the top performing stock markets in 2011, it was the only one which figured in the best performing markets list by posting growth across all growth metrics.

“For two consecutive years, our stock market has been recognized among the fastest growing markets. This just shows that our growth has been sustainable particularly as it founded on the increased economic activity in the country. We are excited about the outlook in 2013 as we also undertake new programs and introduce new products in our stock market to keep the growth momentum in the coming years,” Sicat added.

Moms keep their perfume, makeup & more in Samsung refrigerators

Did you know that your refrigerator can store so much more than just food? At the launch of Samsung’s newest line of refrigerators recently, I learned that the refrigerator is also the best place to store perfume, because putting perfume in a fridge prevents it from spoiling. Here in the tropics, two of the main causes of perfume spoiling are heat and light. The shelf life of a fragrance is normally two years, but try leaving it out on a dresser in a sunny room and it will go over in less than a year. So, keeping it like wine in the fridge keeps it at a constant temperature and out of direct sunlight. At that rate, your perfume will last till the very last drop.

It’s also a good idea to store lipstick in the ref so it doesn’t “sweat” and melt in the heat of your room, or get that waxy crayon smell soon after you buy it.  And I thought my mom was strange for keeping her supply of anti-aging cream in the ref.

And if you are one of those photographers who still use film, the ref is also the best place to keep it. Keeping film refrigerated will extend its life. When you want to use it, the best thing to do is take it out an hour or so beforehand and let it warm up inside the canister. That will stop condensation from forming. But, for me, I know that my life would be pathetic without my overflowing supply of chocolates (from my ever-generous editor). So, if you peeked into the fridge in my home, you can be sure that it is never without a healthy dose of yummy chocolates.

Over a super-healthy lunch of steamed vegetables, vegetable curry and pasta prepared by chef Jessie Sincioco of Chef Jessie Rockwell, I got to witness just how cool the new line of Samsung refrigerators is.

The event was hosted by Tessa Prieto-Valdes and Daphne Oseña-Paez, who seem to have a few things in common — one of these being a love for Samsung refrigerators.

Of course, the other tie that binds these two personalities is their role as loving moms. At home, they see to it that they give only the best for their families with a little help from the world’s leading name in digital home appliances.

In the heart of their kitchens is no less than the all-new Samsung No-Frost Inverter Refrigerator, the innovative home companion that is invading the homes of quality-conscious families all over the world. And at the recent Samsung Home Appliances launch, modern moms Tessa and Daphne shared what makes Samsung refrigerators a must-have in their homes.

The new Samsung No-Frost Inverter Refrigerator brings to the fore powerful technology innovations that exceed the expectations of meticulous moms such as Tessa and Daphne.  Behind its modern sleek design are several category firsts, most notably the refrigerator’s superior digital inverter compressor that strengthens durability and improves energy efficiency. This intelligent compressor automatically adjusts across five speeds of RPM in response to various cooling demands. Whether due to frequent door openings, a hot plate of food, or outside temperature changes, the groundbreaking compressor can either rapidly or slowly provide cold air to reduce energy consumption. What’s more, it operates only when needed, thereby producing less noise so Tessa can throw parties or intimate dinners without hearing that strange humming sound in the background.

To further ensure the refrigerator’s durability, Samsung backs up its new No-Frost Inverter Refrigerator compressor with a 10-year warranty, another first in its category, much to the delight of Tessa and Daphne, who always look for durable appliances for their homes.

More innovations are packed within the Samsung No-Frost Inverter Refrigerator that will leave its owners in awe. Daphne, who is known for her penchant for fresh fruits and vegetables, particularly likes the refrigerator’s MoistFresh Zone, which controls air circulation to obtain optimal humidity, creating an ideal environment to keep fruits and vegetables fresh for a long time.

Tessa says that she can now say goodbye to melted ice cream whenever there is a power interruption, thanks to the refrigerator’s Coolpack that keeps the freezer cool for eight hours in case of a power shut-off.

With their busy lifestyle, convenience and organization are paramount considerations for both ladies. The Samsung No-Frost Inverter Refrigerator’s Power Cool button allows them to get the refrigerator to start cooling inside quickly, reducing waiting time when extra cooling is needed.

When it comes to organization, the smart appliance provides maximum storage flexibility and efficiency. Its Easy Slide shelf makes storing and removing food effortless. Door shelves are also made wider and larger to accommodate bottles of various sizes, and a detachable Multi Storage Basket can be used to hold medicines — or in Tessa’s case, her cosmetics, and other small objects that need refrigeration. And finishing off the ultra-modern design is the recessed Easy Handle that quickly and easily opens the refrigerator with just a click of a button.

Tessa and Daphne are just as meticulous at home as they are in front of the camera. Both are very pleased and convinced with the 10 reasons why every home should have a Samsung refrigerator, which includes the energy-saving digital inverter that comes with a 10-year warranty; easy-slide shelves for easy food access; multi-flow air system; adaptive defrost control; the Coolpack option that keeps the freezer cooler for an extended period despite power interruptions; the MoistFresh zone that helps keep fruits and veggies fresh; the built-in deodorizing filter that eliminates unwanted smells; the LED lighting fixture that brightens every corner of the refrigerator; tempered glass shelves that can handle heavy loads; and the Big Guard that provides wider and deeper storage space for tall bottles and extra-large containers.

With the new Samsung Top Mount Freezer, they do not only get the most out of technological advancements only Samsung can provide, but more importantly they get to give the best to their families in an efficient and practical way.

Asus Fonepad Is a 7-Inch Tablet That Can Make Calls

BARCELONA — Didn't we tell you that the lines between smartphones and tablets are blurred? Case in point: the Asus Fonepad, a 7-inch tablet that's also a phone.

Beware: the Fonepad is a completely different device than the PadFone Infinity. There's no smartphone-becomes-tablet witchery here; the Fonepad is a 7-inch tablet, powered by Android 4.1 and sporting a 3G chip. You can use it to make calls, although we don't think a 7-inch device is ideal for the task.

The Fonepad looks pretty much exactly like Google's Nexus 7, which is hardly surprising since Asus makes that device as well.

However, the Fonepad is very different from most other Android tablets in a one important way: it's powered by the new Intel Atom Z2420 processor (for comparison, the Nexus 7 is powered by ARM's Cortex-A9 CPU).

Intel vice president Hermann Eul claims the processor "delivers the power, performance and flexibility required to accommodate a range of devices and market needs." However, the actual CPU model in the Fonepad is a single-core Atom clocked to 1.2GHz, which doesn't inspire confidence. With our short time with the Fonepad, we've tested Eul's claim, and we can say that the Fonepad feels snappy, on par with other tablets of its size of the iOS and Android variety.

Other specs include a 1280x800 7-inch IPS screen, 8/16GB of storage (expandable via SD memory cards), and a 3-megapixel camera that can record 720p video. All of that is crammed into a case that weighs 340g and is 10.4mm thick.

The device will be available from March 2013, with prices starting at €219 ($286) for the 8GB version.

DKNY Apologizes via Tumblr for Using Photos Without Permission

DKNY has apologized via Tumblr to a photographer and pledged $25,000 in his name for using his images without permission.

The response came after Humans of New York, a photography blog, posted an update by photographer Brandon Stanton claiming that the brand had used his images of DKNY store windows without permission. Stanton claimed that the brand offered him $15,000 for 300 photos. After checking with a friend, Stanton says he realized $50 per photo wasn't nearly enough, so he asked for more. At that point, DKNY refused. He ran photos with the update to make his case.

After taking his fight public, DKNY responded with a Tumblr post claiming it was a mistake:
For the spring 2013 windows program we licensed and paid for photos from established photography service providers. However, it appears that inadvertently the store in Bangkok used an internal mock up containing some of Mr. Stanton's images that was intended to merely show the direction of the strong visual program. We apologize for this error and are working to ensure that only the approved artwork is used.

The brand promised to donate $25,000 to the Bedford-Stuyvesant YMCA in Stanton's name.

Stanton, who had originally been seeking $100,000, told Mashable that he is satisfied with the response: "I'm going to take them at their word that it was a mistake, and be happy that this ended with a sizable donation to my local YMCA. The money will do a lot of good there."

Stanton also said that he never contacted DKNY before airing his complaint on Facebook.

The incident comes a month after Redditors accused BuzzFeed of also using photos without permission. Following the complaints, BuzzFeed switched the photos in favor of Flickr content licensed under Creative Commons.

Arches of beauty

In the face of beauty, brows are of great importance. The face is like a blank canvas — the right shape, grooming, arch and sometimes even the color of your brows can define your look.

There is a brow salon in Manila that caters to all these needs: Browhaus. The salon specializes in brow-styling services, from basic brow shaping through classic threading or modern tweezing, to semi-permanent brow enhancement through full brow resurrection or lengthening. It also offers other personal care services such as facial hair grooming. There is also a treatment where lifelike brow strands are carefully reconstructed and shaped to suit your facial features. This fuss-free and value-for-money treatment gets you perfect brows that last for two years. The salon’s expert services are facilitated by brow architects or brow stylists trained and supported by the Browhaus Training School.

Browhaus’ philosophy is “There is a reason behind every tweeze.” The salon has its signature Blueprint System, which takes into consideration every facial characteristic, from the shape of one’s nose to the position, angle and distance of one’s eyes, from bone structure to muscle movements.

Since 2004, Browhaus has been crafting beautifully-shaped, perfectly-proportioned, natural-looking brows for men and women in New York, London, Singapore, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Jakarta. It started its operations in Manila in 2008.

Here are some tips on grooming your brows:

1.)  It’s not just the shape of one’s brows but also the right shade that softens or enhances one’s features.

2.)  To create a dramatic look, darken your brows.  Light brows give your face a natural look. They make strong features lighter and softer.

3.) Comb your brows and don’t over pluck.

4.)  Don’t isolate the brows, they should complement your other features.

5.)  Grooming brows is also for men, it’s about being neat and well-groomed.

(Browhaus is located at 2/F, Serendra, Bonifacio High Street and 4/F, Greenbelt 5, Makati. For more information, visit www.browhaus-manila.com.)

Cutting smoking saves more in health bills than lost tax: EU

RUSSELS - The cost and health benefits of getting people not to smoke and better still, not to start, more than outweigh the taxes the tobacco industry pays to governments, the European Commission said Monday.

Irish Health Minister James Reilly, presenting the EU's new draft tobacco law in the European parliament, said smokers paid some 20 billion euros ($26.4 billion) annually in tax but health costs associated with smoking came to 23 billion euros.

On top of that were another eight billion euros in lost production and other costs due to smokers' higher rates of sickness, leading to days off and lower efficiency.

It is a "no-brainer, ethically and economically," Reilly told parliament, dismissing out of hand the argument that tobacco is too important economically to be tampered with.

EU Health Commissioner Tonio Borg made the same point, noting that some 700,000 people die prematurely as a result of smoking each year -- equal to a city about the size of Frankfurt in Germany.

The new tobacco directive, which parliament and all 27 member states will have to approve, aims simply to save those lives, Borg said, adding that the legislation needed to be brought up to date as the industry introduces new products, especially those targeting the young.

"Tobacco should look and taste like tobacco," Borg said, holding up new products brightly colored and looking like lipstick or perfume so as to attract younger people.

Accordingly, the directive stipulates that 75 percent of a cigarette package must carry health warnings, and that certain "characterizing" flavors such as vanilla or menthol be banned.

"My aim is that when people look at a tobacco product they realize that it will damage their health," Borg said.

In January, thousands of tobacconists from across Europe marched on European Union headquarters to protest against the planned directive which will take about three years to come into effect once passed.

Rookie Oscar host Seth MacFarlane lives up to provocative image

LOS ANGELES - Rookie Oscar host Seth MacFarlane casually slung a string of zingers at some of Hollywood’s biggest names, including a musical tribute to female frontal nudity in the movies, as he launched the Academy Awards show on Sunday on a decisively provocative note.

In an opening monologue and package of song-and-dance numbers obviously calculated to live up to, and even lampoon, his own reputation for pushing the boundaries of taste, MacFarlane put his biting, edgy brand of humor front and center.

He started off joking that best-picture front-runner “Argo,” about a real-life clandestine CIA operation to rescue American hostages from Iran, was “so top secret that the film’s director is unknown to the Academy.”

The barb was a not-so-subtle jab at members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for failing to nominate Ben Affleck as best director for the critically acclaimed film.

“They know they screwed up,” MacFarlane added, as the camera panned to a shot of Affleck, looking somewhat uncomfortable in his seat. “Ben, it’s not your fault.”

The edgy quotient quickly escalated as MacFarlane described another best-film candidate, “Django Unchained,” as the slavery-era “story of a man fighting to get back his woman who has been subjected to unthinkable violence — or as Chris Brown and Rihanna call it, a date movie.”

The punch line reference to the physical abuse involved in the relationship between the two R&B singers — Brown pleaded guilty to assaulting Rihanna in 2009 — drew an audible groan from the star-studded Dolby Theatre audience.

“Oh, no, that’s what we were afraid he would do,” MacFarlane dead-panned.

More groans followed as MacFarlane went on to joke that the profanity-laced screenplay from “Django” was “loosely based on Mel Gibson’s voice mails,” an allusion to the public disclosure several years ago of ranting telephone messages the actor-director had left for his then-girlfriend.

MacFarlane’s performance should not have come as too great a surprise. The comedian, actor and singer made his mark as creator of the animated television series “Family Guy,” a show known for its ribald satire, much of it aimed at Hollywood conventions.

And MacFarlane, 39, wasted no time in sending up his own risqué persona, in a comedy bit with actor William Shatner, who joined the host on stage via a video screen in the character of Captain Kirk from the sci-fi TV and film series “Star Trek.”

In his fictional drop-in visit from the future, Shatner warns MacFarlane he is “destroying the Academy Awards” with jokes that are “tasteless and inappropriate.”

But the interlude segued into a song-and-dance number by MacFarlane showcasing his vocal chops to a tune called “We Saw Your Boobs,” in which he rhapsodically ticked off the names of various A-list Hollywood actresses who have bared their breasts in films over the years.

Admonished by Shatner to sing songs that celebrate the movies rather than mock them, MacFarlane proceeded to deliver a more respectful rendering of the showbiz standard, “The Way You Look Tonight,” joined on stage in elegant dance by actress Charlize Theron (“Snow White and the Huntsman”) and actor Channing Tatum (“Magic Mike”).

MacFarlane showed off his own dancing talents in a three-way soft-shoe number with actors Joseph Gordon-Levitt (“Lincoln”) and “Harry Potter” star Daniel Radcliffe.

In the way that many cartoons, including MacFarlane’s own “Family Guy” series, operate on different levels for kids and their parents, this year’s Oscar telecast seemed especially designed to play to more than one TV audience.

MacFarlane’s more provocative turns were offset by some of the more traditional pomp typical of Hollywood’s biggest night, including a 50th-anniversary montage salute to James Bond films, capped by veteran singer Shirley Bassey, now 76, reprising her title song from the 1964 film “Goldfinger.”

Early reaction to MacFarlane’s performance was mixed.

In a Twitter message posted during the show, actor-comedian and former Oscar host Steve Martin commented, facetiously: “Congratulations to Seth Rogan (another comically risqué actor with the same first name as the host) on a great monologue. Old-fashioned is back! I’m in!”

CNN host Piers Morgan tweeted, “I doubt there will have ever been a more divisive #Oscars host than @SethMacFarlane – I’m loving him, others are hating it.”

Michelle Obama surprises Oscars by presenting Best Picture award

LOS ANGELES – U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama made a surprise and unprecedented appearance on Sunday’s Oscars telecast when she presented the award for Best Picture, the first time a president or first lady has ever presented an Academy Award.

Appearing live on screen from the White House in Washington, almost 3,000 miles (4,800 km) from the Oscars ceremony in Hollywood, Obama praised the work of the movie industry before announcing the Iran hostage drama “Argo” the Best Picture winner.

Wearing a silver evening dress, Obama said this year’s nominated films had “made us laugh, made us weep and grip our armrests just a little bit tighter.”

Obama added: “They reminded us we can overcome any obstacles if we dig deep enough and hard enough. They are especially important for young people. Everyday they engage in the arts, they learn to open their imaginations … and strive to reach those dreams.”

‘Argo’ beats ‘Lincoln’ for Best Picture; Ang Lee upsets Spielberg for Best Director

LOS ANGELES – Iran hostage thriller “Argo” won the Best Picture Oscar on Sunday, the highest honor in the movie industry, while Ang Lee was a surprise choice for Best Director for “Life of Pi.”

“There are eight great films that have as much right to be up here as we do,” said “Argo” producer and director Ben Affleck.

The not-so-unexpected win for “Argo” was announced in one of the biggest surprises in the history of Oscar telecasts as first lady Michelle Obama made an unprecedented appearance from the White House to declare the film the top winner of the evening.

It was the first time since “Driving Miss Daisy” in 1990 that a film won the top prize at the Oscars without its director also being nominated.

Daniel Day-Lewis made Oscar history and won a long standing ovation on becoming the first man to win three Best Actor Oscars. He collected the golden statuette for his intense performance as U.S. President Abraham Lincoln in “Lincoln.”

“I really don’t know how any of this happened,” said Day-Lewis, who has dual Anglo-Irish citizenship.

Jennifer Lawrence was named Best Actress for playing a feisty young widow in comedy “Silver Linings Playbook”, tripping up on her dress while approaching the stage. She beat Jessica Chastain and France’s Emmanuelle Riva, 86, in one of the closest Oscar contests this year.

Taiwanese director Lee beat front-runner Steven Spielberg in the directing race, in a controversial year that saw four of Hollywood’s leading names omitted from the Academy Award directing shortlist.

Spielberg’s account of President Lincoln’s battle to abolish slavery and end the U.S. civil war went into Sunday’s three-hour plus ceremony with a leading 12 nominations. But it ended up winning just two.

“Argo” also won best film editing and best adapted screenplay for its gripping and often comedic tale of the CIA mission to rescue six U.S. diplomats from Tehran shortly after the Islamic Revolution

In other contests, Anne Hathaway won her first Oscar and harrowing Austrian film “Amour” was voted Best Foreign Language Film.

Hathaway, who starved herself and chopped off her long brown locks to play tragic heroine Fantine in “Les Miserables,” was considered the overwhelming favorite for supporting role in t. he screen version of the popular stage musical.

“It came true,” she said, looking at the golden statuette.

“Here’s hoping that some day in the not too distant future the misfortunes of Fantine will only be found in stories and not in real life,” Hathaway added.

“Amour,” the heart-wrenching tale of an elderly couple coping with the wife’s debilitating stroke, gave Austria the Best Foreign Language film after it had dominated awards shows in Europe and the United States for months.

Another Austrian, Christoph Waltz, was the surprise winner of the closest contest going into the ceremony. He took Best Supporting Actor honors for his turn as an eccentric dentist turned bounty hunter in Quentin Tarantino’s slavery revenge fantasy “Django Unchained.”

It was Waltz’s second Oscar, after winning for the Tarantino movie “Inglourious Basterds” in 2010.

A jubilant Tarantino also won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, and credited the actors who brought the characters in all his films to life. “And boy this time, did I do it!,” he said.

“Brave,” the Pixar movie about a feisty Scottish princess, took home the golden statuette for Best Animated Feature.

The Oscar winners were chosen in secret ballots by some 5,800 members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

New Anti-Piracy System to Hit U.S. Internet Users on Monday

Starting Monday, most U.S. Internet users will be subject to a new copyright enforcement system that could force them to complete educational programs, and even slow their Internet speeds to a crawl.

A source with direct knowledge of the Copyright Alert System (CAS), who asked to not to be named, has told the Daily Dot that the five participating Internet service providers (ISPs) will start the controversial anti-piracy program Monday.

The ISPs — industry giants AT&T, Cablevision, Comcast, Time Warner, and Verizon — will launch their versions of the CAS on different days throughout the week. Comcast is expected to be the first, on Monday.

The CAS, designed as an "educational" service to combat casual piracy in the U.S., has been criticized as designed purely for corporate interests, at the expense of the average Internet user. While it doesn't require ISPs to cut off Internet access to repeat pirates — as is the case in France and New Zealand — it will issue escalating punishments to suspected pirates, severely reducing their connection speeds after five or six offenses.

Though the system's executive director promised to hire an independent consultant to vet the software that will flag copyright violators, that hasn't happened yet.

The date of the launch isn't yet official — the source expressed surprise that the news has been kept so tightly under wraps — but it's been rumored for several weeks to be at the end of February.

Apparently to mark the launch, the CAS has created a shiny new website. It replaces a drab earlier version, one that would go months without an update and seemed a metaphor for the the system's repeated delays and internal conflicts: Most recently, it was pushed from November to late February, "due to unexpected factors largely stemming from Hurricane Sandy."

The CAS also has a sleek new promotional video, wherein a woman explains the process over smooth jazz.

‘Silver Linings Playbook’ wins four honors at indie film awards

SANTA MONICA, California – Quirky comedy “Silver Linings Playbook” dominated the Independent Spirit Awards on the eve of Hollywood’s Academy Awards ceremony, winning four prizes including for Best Feature.

Jennifer Lawrence, 22, who plays a feisty young widow in “Silver Linings Playbook,” was named best actress and David O. Russell picked up the best directing honor on Saturday.

Lawrence and Russell are also in the running for Oscars on Sunday, where “Silver Linings Playbook” is nominated for Best Picture.

“When you make a film from the heart, there is no such thing as genre. They are just real people, and if it’s funny in or of itself, that’s what happens and that’s what my whole cast taught me,” Russell said in accepting his award.

Austrian drama “Amour,” about an elderly couple coping with the effects of the wife’s debilitating stroke, won the Best Foreign Film award on Saturday, strengthening its march toward expected Oscar success on Sunday.

The Independent Spirit Awards are handed out by the Los Angeles-based non-profit group Film Independent and are widely considered the top honors for low-budget and art house movies in the United States.

The ceremony, held in a tent on California’s Santa Monica beach, are a more laid-back affair than the formal and glitzy Academy Awards ceremony. Bruce Willis, Salma Hayek, Jeremy Renner, Daniel Radcliffe, Amy Poehler and other celebrities were treated to a casual lunch.

The awards for “Silver Linings Playbook” largely shut out rival fantasy movie “Beasts of the Southern Wild,” which won one award for cinematography but lost in three other categories.

First-time director Benh Zeitlin, 30, had been considered a front-runner at the Spirit Awards for the mythological film, set in a Louisiana swamp.

“Benh Zeitlin is a young man, so Benh Zeitlin will be back,” Russell quipped on stage.

“Amour” director Michael Haneke, 70, who also won honors at the Cesar Awards in France on Friday, was on hand to accept his award on Saturday. “I have the impression I’m the oldest man here,” he joked.

Backstage, the veteran German director told reporters through a translator that he was looking forward to the Oscars, where “Amour” is a contender in five categories including for Best Picture.

“I feel wonderful. It’s a complete surprise of course. No one expected that a film with themes like aging and death would have such success. It’s been very rewarding for everyone involved,” Haneke said.

Helen Hunt was named Best Supporting Female for her role as a sex therapist in “The Sessions,” while her co-star John Hawkes, who plays a paraplegic, took the Best Male Lead award.

Backstage, Hawkes told reporters that the role was a physical challenge, but worth it.

“Anytime people notice your work, it gives you more confidence,” Hawkes said.

“The Invisible War,” an insight into rape and sexual assault in the U.S. military, won the Best Documentary award.

Amy Ziering, one of the film’s writers, made an emotional acceptance speech, telling service members “you are heard. You are not alone and you are no longer invisible.”

Matthew McConaughey was a winner for his supporting role as a male stripper in comedy “Magic Mike.” The actor, who has enjoyed the biggest critical success in his career for the film, accepted the trophy saying, “I had to take my pants off to win an award.”

Madonna crowned top music earner in 2012 due to world tour

REUTERS – Madonna was named the biggest money maker in music in 2012 on Friday, with a world tour helping her take home up to $34.6 million and highlighting the earning power of live performances as the industry increasingly goes digital.

The 54-year-old Material Girl topped Billboard Magazine’s annual list of 40 top money makers for the second time after earning an estimated $32 million — 93.5 percent of her revenue — from her 88-date “MDNA” tour, 2012′s biggest tour.

Madonna, who also led the list in 2008 due to tour income, was the only woman in the top 10 with last year’s winner, Taylor Swift, who fell to 15th place as she did not tour in 2012.

In second place in the music magazine’s list was Bruce Springsteen whose $33.4 million revenue was also primarily driven by touring, playing to sold-out stadiums and arenas.

Springsteen, who also released a No. 1 album, “Wrecking Ball,” last year, earned 92 percent of his revenue from live shows where strong merchandise sales also boosted takings.

Roger Waters, founder of Pink Floyd, came a distant third with earnings of $21 million largely from “The Wall Live” tour and Van Halen was fourth with $20 million after touring in support of their album “A Different Kind of Truth”.

“When it comes to making the biggest score, the most money always comes from high-paying live performances,” Billboard’s editorial analyst Glenn Peoples wrote in explaining the list.

“Ironically, the most popular touring artists are usually well past their peaks on the album sales charts.”

Country music veteran Kenny Chesney, the Dave Matthews Band, country’s Tim McGraw and Jason Aldean, and British band Coldplay came next on the list.

Canadian teen sensation Justin Bieber was 10th, earning almost $16 million of which about $10 million came from his sold-out “Believe” arena tour.

“The entire top 10 averaged 84.2 percent of their income from concerts, and the number would have been higher, if not for Justin Bieber’s mere 60.1 percent share at No. 10 dragging down the average,” said Billboard.

However touring was not vital for every act on the list such as Swift and Britain’s Adele.

Swift earned $12.7 million after selling the most digital tracks in 2012. She sold more than 3 million digital albums and 15.6 million digital tracks driven by her hit “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together”.

Adele took the year out after having a baby but still earned nearly $14 million, putting her 11th in the rankings, due to continuing strong physical and digital sales for her album “21″.

Maroon 5, ranked 33rd in the list, took the highest share of streaming revenue which made 3.5 percent of its $7.2 million.

Billboard said streaming music online to paying customers has not caught on with older generations and was small in percentage terms but growing.

“Yet even in the coming years, as streaming services become a more important revenue source, possibly replacing digital downloads and CD sales, one thing is unlikely to change: concerts will have the greatest influence of top earners’ overall earnings,” said Peoples.

The list was compiled by Billboard editors using data for Boxscore archives of U.S. concert gross figures, Nielsen SoundScan data for sales, YouTube, and Nielsen BDS data.

Britain loses AAA-rating in Moody's downgrade

WASHINGTON - Rating agency Moody's cut Britain's debt rating Friday by one notch from the top-grade AAA to Aa1, citing slow growth and a rising debt burden.

Moody's also cut its AAA rating for the country's central bank, the Bank of England, by one step, also to Aa1.

The main driver for the sovereign downgrade, Moody's said, "is the increasing clarity that, despite considerable structural economic strengths, the UK's economic growth will remain sluggish over the next few years."

The British economy is constrained both by the turgid global economy, Moody's said, and the drag from businesses and the British government slashing their debt burdens.

Moody's said the country's recovery has proven to be significantly slower than previous rebounds from recession, and Moody's said it did not expect the situation to change.

"Moreover, while the government's recent Funding for Lending Scheme has the potential to support a surge in growth, Moody's believes the risks to the growth outlook remain skewed to the downside."

Moody's said that slow growth would retard a projected rise in tax revenues and make progress difficult for the government's fiscal consolidation program, "which will now extend well into the next parliament."

Meanwhile, the government's growing debt load would reduce the shock-absorption capacity of government finances at least into 2016.

Moody's projected that government debt would continue to rise and peak at 96 percent of gross domestic product in 2016, much later than previous projections.

"After it was elected in 2010, the government outlined a fiscal consolidation program that would run through this parliament's five-year term and place the net public-sector debt-to-GDP ratio on a declining trajectory by the 2015-16 financial year," ratings agency said.

"Now, however, the government has announced that fiscal consolidation will extend into the next parliament, which necessarily makes their implementation less certain."

Moody's however put Britain on a stable outlook, guardedly confident that political will combined with some medium-term fundamental economic strengths "will, in time, allow the government to implement its fiscal consolidation plan and reverse the UK's debt trajectory."
