One Direction sets Nov release for album 'Take Me Home'

LOS ANGELES - British-Irish boy band One Direction took the music industry by storm earlier this year when its debut album topped the US Billboard chart, and now the group is planning a second wave of success with a new record due in November.

The cheeky quintet, who rose to fame in 2010 on UK television talent show "The X Factor", will release their sophomore album "Take Me Home" on Nov. 13, Columbia Records said on Thursday.

"Take Me Home" will feature tracks co-written by the One Direction boys along with British artists such as Ed Sheeran and McFly's Tom Fletcher. The album's lead single "Live While We're Young" will premiere on radio on Sept. 24, and be available digitally from Oct. 1.

One Direction, made up of Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson, Harry Styles and Liam Payne, surged onto the US airwaves earlier this year with catchy pop hit "What Makes You Beautiful", gaining a strong following among teenage girls known as "Directioners".

The band made Billboard history in March this year, becoming the only UK group to debut at No. 1 with their first album, "Up All Night", which has sold 12 million records worldwide.

The new album comes on the heels of One Direction's performance at the London Olympics closing ceremony earlier this month and will be linked to their worldwide tour in 2013. –Reuters

Quake near Philippines prompts evacuation

Manila, Philippines (CNN) -- A 7.6 magnitude earthquake off the coast of the Philippines has prompted a tsunami alert, warnings of structural damage and an urgent call for people to move to higher ground.

"People in threatened coastal areas are strongly advised to immediately evacuate," the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said late Friday.

"Boats at sea are advised to stay in the deeper parts of the open seas until the threat has passed. If there is sufficient time, boats in harbors and enclosed bays are advised to go to the deeper parts of the open seas until the threat has passed."

The quake, which was about 20 miles deep, struck just before 8:50 p.m., authorities said. Its center was about 65 miles southeast of the coastal town of Guiuan, in the Philippine province of Eastern Samar.

The quake prompted a tsunami warning for parts of the Philippines and Indonesia, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said. The U.S. Geological Survey initially said the quake had a magnitude of 7.9 but later revised that figure.

A tsunami watch was in effect for the Marshall Islands, Wake Island, Solomon Islands, several other Pacific islands and parts of Russia, the center said. Authorities did not immediately know whether the earthquake actually had generated a tsunami.

"An earthquake of this size has the potential to generate a destructive tsunami that can strike coastlines near the epicenter within minutes and more distant coastlines within hours," the tsunami warning center said.

The Philippines coastal areas of Northern Smar, Eastern Samar, Leyte, Southern Leyte, Surigao del Norte, and Surigao del Sur fall under the tsunami alert.

Aimee Menguilla, information officer of Philippines' National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, said the agency has advised regional authorities to alert citizens about possible tsunami waves.

"This is not new to us," she said. "We do regular tsunami exercises." But people need to be "particularly alert" because the earthquake occurred at night.

She said the quake was centered in the Marianas Trench in the western Pacific Ocean and was felt in the country's east. There have been no reports, she said, of damage or injuries.

Paul Daza, governor of Northern Samar, said officials are informing citizens of evacuation and "everyone is cooperating."

"Most of our towns are at risk of the possible tsunami," he said. "There are emergency plans if needed, but hopefully there will be no tsunami."

Marie Elairon, working at the front desk at Hotel Dona Vicenta in Borongan, Eastern Samar, said some people are headed to mountainous areas and others have taken shelter in a church.

"There is no panic right now," she said, "but we are being safe and still evacuating."

Dan Molina, a hotel employee in Guiuan, said, "We are advised to go up," referring to higher ground.

Ed Serrano, the head of security at the Marco Polo Hotel in the city of Davao, about 250 miles south of Guiuan, said he felt the ground shake.

"The quake was very strong and the hotel guests were panicking. Most of them went outside," he said. "But now, the situation is under control and we are waiting for official reports on how strong the quake was."

Witnesses in the east said they were seeing four-foot waves.

An initial tsunami warning issued for Japan, Taiwan and several Pacific islands was lifted.

LeAnn Rimes seeks treatment for anxiety, stress

Country singer LeAnn Rimes has entered treatment for anxiety and stress, but is not seeking help for an eating disorder or substance abuse, her spokesman said on Thursday.

Rimes, whose affair with “CSI: Miami” actor Eddie Cibrian while both were married to others caused a scandal three years ago, checked into an unidentified treatment center on Wednesday – the day after her 30th birthday.

“LeAnn has voluntarily entered a 30-day in-patient treatment facility to cope with anxiety and stress,” her publicist Marcel Pariseau said in a statement to People magazine. “While there will be speculation regarding her treatment, she is simply there to learn and develop coping mechanisms.”

Pariseau told the celebrity magazine that the “How Do I Live” singer was not seeking help for substance abuse or an eating disorder, despite recent photos that have sparked debate over her thin figure.

Rimes denied earlier this year that she had anorexia.

The Grammy-winning singer, who became a country music star at age 13, told People that her stay was “just a time for me to emotionally check out for a second and take care of myself and come back in 30 days as the best 30-year-old woman I can be.”

Cibrian, who married Rimes in April 2011 after they both divorced, said his wife had his full support.

Rimes will exit her program to perform some scheduled concerts in September, Pariseau said.

SM to collect P2 plastic bag charge in QC even without IRR

MANILA – A day before a ban on the use of plastic shopping bags takes effect, the Quezon City government has yet to provide retailers a copy of the implementing rules and regulations of the new ordinance.

Corazon Guidote, SM Investments Corp. head of investor relations, told InterAksyon.com that the conglomerate’s retail establishments in Quezon City will collect starting September 1 the P2 charge for every plastic bag customers use in line with the city ordinance.

The money raised would be remitted to the LGU once the IRR is in place, she said.

"It's easy to monitor all the transactions because they are all recorded in the cashier. We can monitor how many used the plastic bags," Guidote said.

Quezon City is one of the largest markets of the SM retail group, she said, with its largest mall in the Philippines located in North Edsa, housing three supermarkets and a department store.

"We have always been supportive of environmental initiatives. We've been doing it in Pasig through our hypermarket there," Guidote said.

The Plastic Bag Reduction Ordinance will enforce a Plastic Recovery System Fee that charges a fixed amount of P2 per plastic bag used regardless of its size.

The collected fee will be part of a "green fund" that will finance various initiatives for the benefit of the environment.

Reusable bag users will be given incentives, giving them points that can be used later for purchase, and a “green lane,” which is a special counter for customers with reusable bags.

Google, Apple CEOs in secret patent talks

SAN FRANCISCO — Google Inc Chief Executive Larry Page and Apple CEO Tim Cook have been conducting behind-the-scenes talks about a range of intellectual property matters, including the mobile patent disputes between the companies, people familiar with the matter said.

The two executives had a phone conversation last week, the sources said. Discussions involving lower-level officials of the two companies are also ongoing.

Page and Cook are expected to talk again in the coming weeks, though no firm date has been set, the sources said on Thursday. One of the sources told Reuters that a meeting had been scheduled for this Friday, but had been delayed for reasons that were unclear.

The two companies are keeping lines of communication open at a high level against the backdrop of Apple’s legal victory in a patent infringement case against Samsung, which uses Google’s Android software.

Last Friday, a jury awarded Apple $1.05 billion in damages and set the stage for a possible ban on sales of some Samsung products in a case that has been widely viewed as a “proxy war” between Apple and Google.

One possible scenario under consideration could be a truce involving disputes over basic features and functions in Google’s Android mobile software, one source said. But it was unclear whether Page and Cook were discussing a broad settlement of the various disputes between the two companies, most of which involve the burgeoning mobile computing area, or are focused on a more limited set of issues.

Competition between Google and Apple has heated up in recent years with the shift from PCs to mobile devices. Google’s Android software, which Apple’s late founder Steve Jobs denounced as a “stolen product,” has become the world’s No.1 smartphone operating system. The popularity of the software has been in tandem with patent infringement lawsuits involving various hardware vendors who use it, including Samsung and HTC.

The latest complaint was filed by Motorola Mobility, now a unit of Google, against Apple at the U.S. International Trade Commission claiming some features of Apple’s devices infringe on its patents. A previous lawsuit between the two in a Chicago court was thrown out by a federal judge, who said neither side could prove damages.

Apple in recent months has moved to lessen its reliance on Google’s products. Apple recently unveiled its own mobile mapping software, replacing the Google product used in the iPhone, and said it would no longer offer Google’s YouTube as a pre-loaded app in future versions of its iPhone.

Cook took the helm at Apple a year ago, and Page stepped into the top job at Google a few months before that.

The conversation between Page and Cook last week did not result in any formal agreement, but the two executives agreed to continue talking, according to one source.

Google’s Larry Page, who sat out several public speaking engagements earlier this summer because of an unspecified medical condition affecting his voice, has continued to run Google’s business.

Apple and Google declined to comment on any discussions.

Eurozone jobless numbers hit record 18 million

BRUSSELS - Jobless numbers across the 17-nation eurozone hit a record 18 million in July, the EU statistics agency said Friday.

An additional 88,000 people joined the ranks of the unemployed throughout July, although upwardly-revised June data meant that the unemployment rate was unchanged at 11.3 percent, Eurostat said.

The 18,002,000 headline jobless figure was the highest since records began in 1995, it added.

With an estimated 25.254 million unemployed across the full European Union, which also includes non-euro heavyweights Britain and Poland, the figures add to concerns over a plunge back into recession for the eurozone and its nearest neighbours.

At 5.5 percent, the unemployment rate was much lower in powerhouse Germany, as well as the neighbouring economies of Austria and the Netherlands, but more than one in four are still out of work in Spain.

Annual increases in Spain and Greece were easily the highest, and both countries, labouring under sovereign and banking debt crises, logged jobless rates among the key under-25s age-group of more than 50 percent.

Romney to conclude GOP convention with defining speech

Tampa, Florida (CNN) -- Paul Ryan energized the Republican National Convention with a powerful attack on President Barack Obama that championed conservative principles, setting the stage for Mitt Romney's defining speech on Thursday night to accept the party's presidential nomination.

In the biggest speech of his still young political career, the Republican vice presidential nominee told the party faithful and the American public that time is running out to solve the nation's fiscal problems, but the GOP ticket can do it if elected in November.

"We will not duck the tough issues -- we will lead," Ryan said in his prime-time address televised nationwide. "... The work ahead will be hard. These times demand the best of us -- all of us, but we can do this. We can do this. Together, we can do this."

Republicans at the Tampa Bay Times Forum punctuated Ryan's speech with frequent cheers and ovations, showing he delivered the kind of political red meat they craved as the campaign heads into the stretch drive with the race very close.

"He really did blow the roof off this place," said CNN Chief Political Correspondent Candy Crowley, labeling the performance "the tee-up for Mitt Romney tomorrow."

Ryan's speech was part of a campaign effort to portray Romney, a multimillionaire businessman and former Massachusetts governor, as a champion of working-class Americans who struggle with high unemployment and a sluggish post-recession economy under Obama.

Romney chose Ryan, the conservative House Budget Committee chairman from Wisconsin, as his running mate in hopes that the fiscal expert known for big and hard-line ideas would galvanize support on the political right and appeal to moderates and independents seeking solutions for the nation's chronic deficit and debt problems.

Ryan decried a dearth of leadership under Obama and pledged results in keeping with the convention theme for the day: "We Can Change It."

"I accept the calling of my generation to give our children the America that was given to us, with opportunity for the young and security for the old, and I know that we are ready," Ryan said. "Our nominee is sure ready. His whole life has prepared him for this moment, to meet serious challenges in a serious way, without excuses and idle words. After four years of getting the runaround, America needs a turnaround, and the man for the job is Gov. Mitt Romney."

Focus on fiscal issues

Ryan focused mostly on the fiscal issues that are his strength, such as the national debt, stimulus spending under Obama and his proposed Medicare reforms that would partially privatize the government health care system for senior citizens.

Obama and Democrats have attacked the Ryan plan, and he sought to turn the tables on the issue by repeating the factually challenged assertion that the president cut Medicare by more than $700 billion to cover the costs of the 2010 health care reform law passed by Democrats.

The figure comes from a July 24 Congressional Budget Office report that said repealing the health care law, as called for by Romney and Ryan, would increase spending on Medicare by $716 billion through 2022. At the same time, the CBO letter said keeping what critics call "Obamacare" in place would not mean a $716 billion decrease in Medicare spending, as claimed by Ryan.

Independent fact-checking organizations have rated the accusation first made by Romney that Obama raided Medicare to pay for "Obamacare" as mostly false. Ryan, however, said he and Romney welcomed the debate on how to ensure the long-term solvency of the popular entitlement program that is a key part of America's social safety net.

His speech included some humorous jabs at Obama that drew laughs and ovations from a charged convention crowd.

"With all their attack ads, the president is just throwing away money, and he's pretty experienced at that," Ryan said early in the speech. He also joked about his running mate's musical tastes, chiding Romney for the "elevator music" that reflected their generational gap.

Later, Ryan received a standing ovation when he asked: "Without a change in leadership, why would the next four years be any different from the last four years?"

He also peppered his remarks with references to central government planning and control, code words for socialism among the most conservative elements of the Republican Party.

"None of us should have to settle for the best this administration offers, a dull, adventureless journey from one entitlement to the next, a government-planned life, a country where everything is free but us," he said.

In the most emotional moment, Ryan paid tribute to his mother, who started her own business after his father died.

"It was a new life, and it transformed my mom from a widow in grief to a small businesswoman whose happiness wasn't just in the past," Ryan said. "Her work gave her hope. It made our family proud. And to this day, my mom is my role model."

In the VIP box of the Tampa Bay Times Forum, Ryan's mother, Betty, stood and waved, and he touched his heart with his hand while gazing at her.

America's role in the world

In other speeches Wednesday night, Sens. Rand Paul of Kentucky and John McCain of Arizona offered biting criticism of Obama's presidency, saying he was failing to adhere to American values.

Paul took aim at domestic policies that he blamed for the country's debt now equaling its economic production, calling Obama "uniquely unqualified to lead this great nation."

McCain, the Republican presidential candidate defeated by Obama four years ago, targeted what he called diminishing American power and influence around the world. He accused Obama of abandoning freedom movements in Iran and Syria by not supporting protesters trying to overthrow oppressive regimes, saying "our president is not being true to our values."

"We can choose to follow a declining path, toward a future that is dimmer and more dangerous than our past, or we can choose to reform our failing government, revitalize our ailing economy, and renew the foundations of our power and leadership in the world," said McCain, a consistent advocate for a stronger military. "That is what's at stake in this election."

Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice added her voice to the call for American strength through power, delivering a politically charged speech that accused Obama of yielding the nation's leadership role in the world.

"It just has to be that the freest and most compassionate country on the face of the Earth will continue to be the most powerful," Rice said to cheers. She also made a strong call for education reform, labeling the lack of successful schools in impoverished areas the "civil rights issue" of our day.

Romney and Republicans contend that Obama's policies, such as stimulus spending, have worsened an already bad economic situation the president inherited from the previous GOP administration of President George W. Bush. They propose traditional conservative policies to shrink government, cut taxes and drastically reform entitlements, which they say will bring economic growth and job creation.

Obama and Democrats say such prescriptions are failed policies of the past and call for increased revenue sources such as higher taxes for wealthy Americans to be part of a deficit reduction plan that includes some spending cuts and entitlement reforms.

"On almost every issue (Romney) wants to go backwards, sometimes all the way to the last century," Obama said Wednesday at a campaign event in Virginia.

For Ryan, 42, the vice presidential nomination and convention speech means an elevated national profile after never having run a statewide race.

The convention is proceeding as Hurricane Isaac drenches the Gulf Coast after making landfall in Louisiana on Tuesday night, the eve of the seven-year anniversary of devastating Hurricane Katrina. The storm prompted Republican organizers to postpone the first day of the convention, which is a crucial opportunity for defining Romney to the American people.

GOP officials pushed ahead with a convention agenda designed to frame the election as a referendum on Obama's presidency while attempting to turn Romney's biggest political vulnerabilities into campaign advantages.

Ryan's speech emphasized that effort, concluding with a call for voters of all parties to "come together for the sake of our country" by backing the Republican ticket.

Romney clinched the GOP nomination in the roll call of state delegates Tuesday after a rugged Republican primary campaign that saw momentum swings nearly every week and bitter attacks by GOP colleagues

The 2,200-plus convention delegates also approved a conservative platform that calls for less government, opposes same-sex marriage and endorses a "human life amendment" to ban abortion, with no specific exceptions for cases of rape, incest or when the mother's life is threatened.

Personal stories of hard work, success

Romney and Ryan, who also was endorsed by delegates Tuesday, will be formally nominated on Thursday when Romney will deliver his acceptance speech to conclude the convention and move the campaign toward the election.

Throughout the convention, speaker after speaker has emphasized his or her own humble beginnings as descendants of immigrants who worked hard to achieve success for their families and never expected government help or handouts. Virtually every speaker took umbrage with Obama's comment on the campaign trail that "you didn't build that" in reference to successful businesses that received government help along the way.

On Tuesday night, Romney's wife, Ann, faced a similar entry as Ryan into the full glare of presidential media coverage with her own prime-time speech that delivered a political broadside with a personal touch.

She mixed homespun anecdotes, such as repeated references to their first date, with references to issues considered weaknesses for her husband, support from women and his personal wealth, in encouraging Americans to get to know the warm and loving man she met at a high school dance.

"This was a political speech wrapped in velvet," CNN chief political analyst Gloria Borger commented.

Ann Romney took on another tricky political issue for her husband on Wednesday when she addressed a Latino coalition and challenged the traditional support by Hispanic-Americans for Democrats, including Obama.

"I feel like my importance in speaking out is making sure that those coalitions that would naturally be voting for another party wake up and say you better really look at the issues this time," she said. "You better really look at your future and say who is going to be the guy who is going to make it better for you and your children. And there is only one answer."

For Romney, 65, the nomination puts him within one step of the goal he first sought in 2007 by running for president after serving as a Republican governor for four years in traditionally Democratic Massachusetts.

Though rivals challenged his conservative credentials in the 2012 primaries, Romney emerged victorious. But he continues to walk a political tightrope in trying to energize right-wing support while also appealing to moderates and independent voters.

The latest CNN/ORC International poll indicates a dead heat between Romney and Obama, with new numbers released Sunday showing that 53% of likely voters believe Obama is more in touch with their needs, compared with 39% for Romney.

Obama leads by an equal margin when it comes to being in touch with the middle class, and six in 10 say Obama is in touch with the problems facing women today, with just over three in 10 feeling the same way about Romney.

Romney leads 48% to 44% over Obama on managing the government effectively and has a 6-point advantage on having a clear plan for fixing the nation's problems. Both figures are within the survey's margin of error.

Committee examining Piper Seneca engine to determine cause of Masbate crash

The five-man Special Investigation Committee formed by the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) is now examining the starboard (right side) plane engine of the Piper Seneca which crashed killing DILG Secretary Jesse Robredo.

CAAP director general William Hotchkiss III said the Committee’s Airframe/Structure Special Group would assist the investigation team in its inspection of the engine.

The Philippine Coast Guard recovered the engine from the crash site last Tuesday. The engine is now under tight security at the Masbate airport.

“We believe the plane engine will be key part of our investigation. This will determine if indeed it was due to technical or mechanical problem that caused it to fail,” Hotchkiss said.

CAAP is also reconstructing the flight path of the ill-fated plane including communication between control towers and the pilot. The authority has also taken statements from key witnesses and will issue subpoenas for others.

According to Atty. Nic Conti, DOTC spokesperson, the Special Investigation Committee, which is composed of personalities coming from the aviation industry with proven track records in the field of aviation safety, will submit periodic reports in the course of the investigation. — DVM, GMA News

With the theme “Masaganang Kinabukasan Mula Sa Niyugang Inalagaan,” the celebration focuses on the coconut and its potentials, benefits, and uses as the “tree of life.” It is being held in three focal coconut hubs: the PCA Central Office in Luzon; Tacloban, Leyte, for the Visayas Cluster; and Zamboanga City for Mindanao. Coconut traders from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao will display and sell coconut-based products in the culmination of the celebration at the PCA main office.

The Philippines is a top exporter of coconut products to 62 countries, earning $2 billion in 2011. It produces coconut sugar, virgin coconut oil, desiccated coconut, coco shell charcoal, coconut water, and activated carbon, among others. Of the country’s 12 million hectares of farmland, 3.1 million hectares are devoted to coconut, planted by 2.5 million coconut farmers. Out of 79 provinces, 68 are coconut-growing areas. Coconut farms are widely distributed nationwide, largely in Southern Luzon and in Mindanao. There are 324 million coconut trees in the country, about 85 percent of which are productive.

The 26th National Coconut Week, a partnership of the private sector, national and local agencies, and PCA, is providing a venue for information-sharing, trading, and market-matching activities to promote business opportunities from coconut. There will be lectures on latest technology and food safety, blessing of coco-showroom and village, trade fairs and exhibits showcasing coconut products and by-products, book launching, photo contest, fun run, cooking contest and demonstration.

Private sector prepays 17.7% more foreign debt in 1H

MANILA - Private sector borrowers with dollar-denominated debt paid down more of their obligations in the first six months of the year, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas said on Wednesday.

According to the BSP, the private sector prepaid $735 million in debts in the January to June period, or 17.7 percent more than a year ago's $628 million.

The prepayment comes at a time when the peso has strengthened, appreciating 0.78 percent vis-a-vis the US dollar in the past month.

Prepayment totaled $1.5 billion last year, down from $4.1 billion in 2010.

The BSP said the country's foreign debt at end-May reached $62.9 billion or lower than foreign exchange reserves of $76.02 billion.

As a percentage of gross domestic product, the country's foreign debt fell to 27.38 percent from last year’s 29.51 percent. The private sector's foreign debt likewise improved to 6.35 percent of GDP at end-May from 7 percent in 2011.

Total debt also dropped to 21.03 percent of GDP from 22.52 percent last year. Consequently, the country's debt service burden fell to $2.69 billion from $3.18 billion a year ago.

On Int'l Day of the Disappeared, Facebook users urged to remove profile pics

MANILA, Philippines -- Human rights activists are urging Facebook users to take down their profile pictures on Thursday, August 30, the International Day of the Disappeared, to show solidarity with the families and friends of victims of enforced disappearances.

On Tuesday, Karapatan posted this appeal on its Facebook page: “Please take down your profile picture on August 30, Thursday, in solidarity with the friends and family of the missing, from the Martial Law days up to the present, who continue to seek justice.”

This online action also serves as a rallying cry for the swift passage of the Anti-Enforced Disappearance Bill.

As the nation commemorates the 40th year since former President Ferdinand Marcos imposed Martial Law on the Philippines, Karapatan said it hopes the Filipino people “take stock of the continuing need to remember the open tyrannical rule and the grave human rights violations during the Marcos years; reflect and study the prevailing climate of impunity and the pervasive rights abuses under the Oplan Bayanihan of the current Aquino administration; and resist all forms of curtailment of human rights and pursue justice for the victims and their kin.”

On Thursday, families of those who disappeared during the years following Martial Law will gather at Plaza Miranda to call on President Benigno Aquino III to “stop enforced disappearances and to demand justice for all those who disappeared” over four decades.

Last year, Facebook users also took their profile pictures down to protest continuing enforced disappearances and human rights violations.

In an article on last year’s campaign, InterAksyon noted that the International Day of the Disappeared was initiated by the Federación Latinoamericana de Asociaciones de Familiares de Detenidos-Desaparecidos, “a nongovernment organization established in Costa Rica in 1981, which works to help those affected by forced disappearances in Latin America.”

'Penis-head' fish discovered in Vietnam

HANOI -- A new species of fish with a penis on its head has been identified in the Mekong Delta in Vietnam, researchers said on Wednesday.

Phallostethus cuulong is the newest member of the Phallostethidae family -- small fish found in Southeast Asian waters that are distinguished primarily by the positioning of the male sexual organ.

Male phallostethids have a copulatory organ, termed the priapium, under the throat for holding or clasping onto females and fertilizing their eggs internally, according to conservationists.

"We have scientifically identified a new penis-head fish in Vietnam," researcher Tran Dac Dinh from Can Tho University told AFP.

The fish was known to Vietnamese people in the Mekong Delta but had not been described scientifically before a team identified the species last year, he said.

Prince Harry to cheer on British Paralympians

LONDON - Britain's Prince Harry will next week make his first public appearance since nude photographs of him in a Las Vegas hotel room flooded the internet, it was announced on Tuesday.

The prince will cheer on swimmers at the Paralympic Games on Monday and will later meet with British competitors in London.

However, a St James's Palace spokesman stressed that the prince's timetable was open to change.

Harry is an official ambassador of ParalympicsGB, but will not be joining Queen Elizabeth II, Prince William and his wife Katherine at Wednesday's opening ceremony.

Harry, 27, was photographed naked with a mystery woman during a game of "strip billiards" in a Las Vegas hotel suite.

The images, first published on a US website last Wednesday, rapidly went viral and caused a furore in Britain.

The Sun is the only British newspaper to have published the nude snaps of Harry, in defiance of orders from the royal family to respect the prince's privacy and refrain from printing them. — AFP

ING may sell $1 billion Hong Kong insurance unit in separate deal

HONG KONG — ING is exploring a separate sale of its roughly $1 billion Hong Kong insurance business, sources said, a move that could further complicate the auction of its Asian operations.
The Dutch insurer is selling its Asia divisions to repay a 2008 government bailout. It failed to secure a single buyer for the entire Asian group, valued at about $7 billion. As a result, ING decided to split the auction into three pieces – Japan, South Korea and Southeast Asia.
The Hong Kong business was originally lumped in with Southeast Asia, together with Malaysia and Thailand. But with the Southeast Asia sale making slow progress due to foreign ownership restrictions, ING is keen to expedite parts of the nearly six-month old process.
The sources, who declined to be identified as the discussions are confidential, cautioned that ING has not made a final decision.
"Divestment may take place through multiple transactions," an ING spokeswoman said.
While selling Hong Kong separately may extend the auction process for the Asia business, it could allow ING to extract better value from a buyer focused just on that specific market, sources said.
A successful Hong Kong sale may also allow ING the flexibility to accept lower offers for South Korea and Japan, which have received lukewarm response so far in the bidding.
Front-runners

A consortium led by Hong Kong's Richard Li, the son of Asia's richest man, Li Ka-shing, may prove to be a leading contender to buy just the Hong Kong portion from ING, one of the sources said.
Li previously ran an insurance business in Hong Kong, which he exited in 2007 by selling a controlling stake to Dutch and Belgian financial services firm Fortis.
Pan-Asian life insurer AIA Group Ltd. and Canadian insurer Manulife Financial Corp. are the leading contenders to buy ING's Southeast Asia operations, sources have previously said. Li's bidding group has also expressed interest in the Southeast Asia units.
ING's auction has put the Malaysian and Thai regulators in a bind as the two countries do not allow foreign insurers to buy 100 percent of domestic insurance operations. ING launched businesses in the two countries before the regulations went into effect.
ING's Southeast Asian operations are valued between $2.5 billion and $3 billion, with Malaysia accounting for about two-thirds of the total value.

An AIA spokeswoman declined to comment. Spokesmen for Manulife and Richard Li also declined to comment. — Reuters

India GDP figures set to deepen gloom

MUMBAI - India is set to announce dismal new economic growth figures on Friday, with expansion in the April-June quarter forecast at near nine-year-lows.

"The numbers will be bad," Siddhartha Sanyal, chief India economist with Barclays Capital told AFP ahead of the publication of the data, which is expected to deepen the gloom surrounding Asia's third-biggest economy.

"Industrial growth is likely to be flat, inflation is high and it is unclear what the government can do in the next three to six months," Sanyal said.

He forecasts India's gross domestic product (GDP) grew at the same rate as the previous quarter at 5.3 percent, a high figure by the standards of developed countries but far below the near double-digit growth of much of the past decade.

Leif Eskesen, HSBC's chief India economist predicts the same, saying "growth will be muted due to global headwinds and the lack of structural reforms in India."

India's once booming industrial sector is in crisis, with output contracting by a shock 1.8 percent in June due to high borrowing costs, declining confidence and falling demand.

Overseas investor confidence in the Indian economy is also on the wane, as shown by figures for foreign direct investment (FDI) for the quarter to June which tumbled year-on-year by 67 percent to $4.43 billion,

Global rating agencies like Fitch and Standard and Poor's have lowered their outlook on India's investment-grade rating amid rising worries about the government's deteriorating finances and negative current account.

The central Reserve Bank of India has also warned the country's economic prospects are unlikely to improve in the near-term, due to high inflation, the lack of reform and the impact of poor monsoon rains on farm output.

The RBI has kept interest rates on hold since April -- when it cut rates for the first time in three years by 50 basis points -- and economists do not expect the bank to lower rates in a hurry.

While other central banks around the globe have been easing interest rates to revive their troubled economies, the RBI says a cut in government subsidies and revival of investment are needed to remove chronic bottlenecks in the economy.

Wholesale inflation stands at 6.87 percent -- above the bank's comfort level of five to six percent -- while the consumer price index, which covers a smaller band of goods, is at 9.86 percent.

Business leaders and industry want collective action from the government and the RBI to boost growth.

"Immediate policy actions are needed, both by the government and RBI, to arrest the downward spiral in industrial growth," director-general of Confederation of Indian Industry Chandrajit Banerjee said last week.

But Jigar Shah, head of research with Kim Eng Securities, warned: "The mood is downbeat and people have no hope left from the government.

"The only positive is that things possibly cannot get worse."

India's economy is expected to grow 6.7 percent in the current fiscal year, according to a forecast by an advisory panel to the prime minister, while many economists see it as even lower.

The government -- damaged by a series of corruption scandals -- is struggling to introduce legislative reforms in parliament due to protests from the opposition which is demanding Prime Minister Manmohan Singh resign.

India's national auditor last week criticised Singh's government for giving away coal blacks since 2004 in a murky allocation process rather than selling them via a transparent auction.

In figures that have since been hotly contested, the auditor said companies given valuable resources had made windfall profits of 1.85 trillion rupees or $33 billion, a part of which could have gone to the national exchequer.

Latest Java software opens PCs to hackers: experts

BOSTON — Computer security firms are urging PC users to disable Java software in their browsers, saying the widely installed, free software from Oracle Corp opens machines to hacker attacks and there is no way to defend against them.

The warnings, which began emerging over the weekend from Rapid7, AlienVault and other cyber security firms, are likely to unnerve a PC community scrambling to fend off growing security threats from hackers, viruses and malware.

Researchers have identified code that attacks machines by exploiting a newly discovered flaw in the latest version of Java. Once in, a second piece of software called “Poison Ivy” is released that lets hackers gain control of the infected computer, said Jaime Blasco, a research manager with AlienVault Labs.

Several security firms advised users to immediately disable Java software — installed in some form on the vast majority of personal computers around the world — in their Internet browsers. Oracle says that Java sits on 97 percent of enterprise desktops.

“If exploited, the attacker will be able to perform any action the victim can perform on the victim’s machine,” said Tod Beardsley, an engineering manager with Rapid7′s Metasploit division.

Computers can get infected without their users’ knowledge simply by a visit to any website that has been compromised by hackers, said Joshua Drake, a senior research scientist with the security firm Accuvant.

Java is a computer language that enables programmers to write one set of code to run on virtually any type of machine. It is widely used on the Internet so that Web developers can make their sites accessible from multiple browsers running on Microsoft Windows PCs or Macs from Apple Inc.

An Oracle spokeswoman said she could not immediately comment on the matter.

Security experts recommended that users not enable Java for universal use on their browsers. Instead, they said it was safest to allow use of Java browser plug-ins on a case-by-case basis when prompted for permission by trusted programs such as GoToMeeting, a Web-based collaboration tool from Citrix Systems Inc

Rapid7 has set up a web page that tells users whether their browser has a Java plug-in installed that is vulnerable to attack: www.isjavaexploitable.com/

PLDT expands coverage of 100Mbps fiber Internet service

MANILA, Philippines — Telecom provider Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT) is expanding its ultra-fast home Internet service to other posh villages in Metro Manila, the company announced Tuesday.

Under the PLDT Fibr brand offering, the telco’s fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) Internet service enables download speeds of up to 100Mbps, or about a hundred times faster than the average download rates in the Philippines.

Initially available in upscale villages such as Ayala Alabang and Forbes Park, PLDT said it is expanding the service to cater to the following areas: East, West, North, and Northeast Green Hills, Acropolis, Green Meadows, La Vista, and Valle Verde in Quezon City; Alabang Hills, Alabang 400, and Hillsborough in Alabang, Muntinlupa; and Dasmariñas Village, San Lorenzo Village, and Urdaneta Village in Makati.

An 8Mbps plan from the service costs P3,500 per month, while a 15Mbps plan is available for P6,500 a month. A 100Mbps plan is also available for P20,000 a month.

Unlike cable Internet, which shares bandwidth among nearby customers, PLDT Head of Home Business Ariel Fermin said PLDT Fibr provides a “dedicated broadband connection” to every subscriber through its use of fiber-optic cables.

Fiber Internet uses fiber optic technology, which transmits data via light signals sent through hair-thin strands of pure glass. Instead of the usual copper going to the homes of customers, thin fiber optic cables will be used.

“All PLDT Fibr plans are equipped with an Optical Network Unit (ONU) Modem, which has a fiber optic cable connection that delivers its enviable ultra-high speed feature,” Fermin added.

The new platform will be able to deliver simultaneously voice, video and data services at much higher speeds and larger capacities than DSL or cable technologies, PLDT added.

The expansion of the service comes as the telco nears completion of the installation of 50,000 kilometers of fiber optic cable nationwide, part of its P67-billion network modernization program.

Just recently, the telco announced the completion of the $400 million Asia Submarine-Cable Express, touted as the largest-capacity international submarine cable system in the country, which links Japan, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore through a fiber optic cable.

The completion of the undersea cable system brings the telco’s local landing stations to three, enabling it to efficiently deliver bandwidth-heavy applications requiring Internet access the likes of VoIP, IP-based data, and other multimedia content.

Australian surfer in bloody shark attack

SYDNEY - A surfer has been savaged by a shark off a remote west Australian beach in the sixth serious incident in the state in less than a year, with witnesses Wednesday telling of water "full of blood."

The man, reported to be in his 30s, was bitten on the abdomen and suffered severe injuries to his right arm while trying to fend off the shark at far-flung Red Bluff -- a popular surf spot about 1,000 kilometers (600 miles) north of Perth.

A fellow surfer dragged the man onto his board and brought him ashore after Tuesday afternoon's attack, with witnesses recounting gruesome scenes.

"The water was full of blood," said local woman Rebecca Caldwell.

The man was wrapped in towels to stem blood loss and driven almost two hours down unsealed roads to a waiting ambulance, according to Caldwell's husband Jim, the local campground manager.

"We were keeping him talking, that was the main thing, to keep him coherent," Caldwell told The West Australian newspaper, describing the victim as "tough as nails."

"It was all about keeping the pressure on, the blood loss was our biggest concern."

It is the sixth serious attack off Australia's west coast in less than a year, with a fatality north of Perth last month -- the fifth in less than 12 months -- renewing debate about whether great whites should remain protected.

Most fatal attacks in the region involve great whites, among the largest shark species in the world and made famous by the horror movie "Jaws."

Western Australia Fisheries spokesman Tony Cappelluti told ABC radio it was "very difficult to speculate" what kind of shark it was in the latest attack, with tiger sharks "fairly prevalent" in the area but great whites also present.

Cappelluti said the beach was closed but due to its remoteness authorities were not likely to hunt the shark in question, with "resources a bit thin up there."

Vitarich board approves capital increase

MANILA - Vitarich Corp. on Tuesday secured board clearance to raise its capital stock to accommodate the issuance of new shares to creditors.

In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange, the listed animal feeds producer said it will hike its authorized capital stock from P1.5 billion to P3.5 billion.

Vitarich also obtained board approval to issue 2 billion new common shares to creditors that would convert outstanding debt for an equity interest in the company.

The transaction is subject to the approval of the Securities and Exchange Commission and the court hearing the company's rehabilitation case.

The shares will be listed with the local bourse, subject to the approval of stockholders. Vitarich will present the board resolutions to stockholders for approval in a special meeting on October 15.

Vitarich has been under corporate rehabilitation since 2006 amid difficulties in paying off P3.23 billion in debt. The Asian financial crisis and the avian flu outbreak in 2003 weighed heavily on the company's finances.

Vitarich is engaged in the production and distribution of various poultry products such as live and dressed chicken, day-old chicks and animal and aqua feeds, among others.

Spain recession deepens as austerity weighs

Gross domestic product fell by 0.4 percent in the second quarter of the year, according to final data that confirmed a preliminary reading. But on an annual basis it dropped by 1.3 percent, worse than initial estimates of 1.0 percent.

Spain's economy fell back into recession in the first quarter of the year, when output fell 0.3 percent, and government estimates show GDP will probably fall for this year and next year as it pushes through further measures aimed at slashing a bloated deficit.

The data came a day after Spain said its economy performed less well than expected in both of the last two years.

On Tuesday, the National Statistics Institute, INE, also revised down 2011 fourth quarter GDP to -0.5 percent from -0.3 percent.

Close to record high borrowing costs and an economy showing little sign of picking up any time soon is nudging Spain closer to calling for a European bailout, which analysts say is only a matter of time.

"With much more fiscal austerity in the pipeline and unemployment at astronomic highs, the risks are clearly tilted towards a more protracted recession," said Martin van Vliet, economist at ING.

He expected Spain to make a formal request for additional external financing in mid-September or October. Spain has already negotiated up to 100 billion euros in aid for its ailing banks.

Tuesday's data showed exports provided a degree of support for the economy, growing by 3.3 percent year-on-year in the second quarter. That compared with a fall of 3.9 percent in national demand, after a revised fall of 3.2 percent in the first quarter.

Spain's government is hoping that exports will put the economy on the road to recovery. But a slowdown in the wider euro zone, where most of the country's goods are shipped, could test that theory.

The country desperately needs to stimulate growth to help it meet the public deficit targets agreed with the European Union.

Zsa Zsa Padilla’s Surgery Successful

MANILA, Philippines – Zsa Zsa Padilla's prayers were answered with the success of the surgery she underwent in the US on Aug. 28 (local time) that removed her kidney cyst.

This was announced by Zsa Zsa’s daughter, Zia Quizon, via Twitter on Tuesday afternoon.

“As far as the doctors could tell it (cancer) has not spread anywhere else. Thank you everyone for your prayers and support. <3,” she added.

Several minutes later, Zia posted a photo of her with the Divine Diva, which bore the caption: “Much love, guys! Thankful to be loved, to be blessed, and for every second. :)”

The veteran singer-actress underwent laparoscopic surgery (a minimally invasive procedure) at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California. Zia, along with her half-sister Karylle, are also in the US to support their mother.

Zsa Zsa’s other daughter, Nicole Quizon, related the turnout of Zsa Zsa’s surgery during the healing mass tendered for the 48-year-old diva on Tuesday afternoon at the Dolphy Theater of ABS-CBN in Quezon City. Others who attended the mass included Dolphy’s children Eric Quizon, Epi Quizon, and Vandolph.

Zsa Zsa was diagnosed with Stage 1 kidney cancer just several weeks past the death of her life partner, Comedy King Dolphy. In her series of examinations at the Cedars-Sinai hospital, Zsa Zsa learned that she had a malignant tumor almost the size of golf ball—three centimeters.

In her recent interview with the ABS-CBN North America News Bureau, Zsa Zsa said that she will stay in the hospital for two days. After a week, she can fly back to the Philippines then resume work after a month.

Notwithstanding this latest battle, Zsa Zsa continues to embody venerable strength.

“I always need to be very strong and the only time I really cry is when I tell people closest to me [about my condition] and they break down. That’s when I feel weak. Kung iisipin mo kasi parang, ‘O, namatayan ka ng asawa, may cancer ka ngayon.’ Pero naisip ko, it could happen to anyone. So I’m just very lucky and very grateful na naagapan. Stage 1 nalaman na na cancer para matanggal,” she related.

She is likewise buoyed by optimism, inspired by the ups and downs she had triumphantly weathered with Dolphy.

“Si Zia naga-assess. Sabi niya, ‘Mama, I think it’s because we’re still in a phase wherein we can take it.’ So I can’t… not see the brighter side to things. That’s how Dolphy and I would survive our relationship.

“We have been through the best and the worst of times, so lahat ng pinagdaanan namin, lalong-lalo na nu’ng umpisang-umpisa pa lang ng relasyon namin, sobra na ‘yung test. Na parang ‘yung mga susunod pang trials namin totoo namang nakayanan namin lahat...,” said Zsa Zsa.

Filipinos High In Financial Quotient — Citi Survey

MANILA, Philippines — Filipinos scored an all-time high of 52.6 out of a possible 100 points in the latest Citi Financial Quotient (Fin-Q) Survey, passing the 50-point mark for the first time since the survey was launched in 2007.

The Citi Fin-Q Survey is an annual survey designed to measure the Financial Quotient or financial well-being of consumers. All respondents were over 18 years of age with either a bank account or a major credit card.

The Filipinos’ high Fin-Q score can be credited to a better understanding of money management, according to the survey. Fifty-nine percent feel they have a “good” or “very good” understanding about money management and personal finances. This also explains why 94% reported attempting a monthly budget, the highest number across all countries participating in the research.

In this latest survey, respondents were scored on 11 different questions closely related to financial well-being for a maximum possible score of 100. The questionnaire consisted of over 50 questions and covered a range of topics closely related to financial decision-making and smart financial habits.

Citi conducted the survey through research firm Big Picture Qual and Quant Research in late 2011, and results were released this year. The survey covered 4,000 people across 8 countries including the Philippines. Five hundred interviews were held in each of the participating countries that include Australia, India, Indonesia, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand.

According to Citi Country Officer Sanjiv Vohra, the results of the survey reaffirm Citi’s commitment to financial education. “As Citi celebrates its 200th anniversary this year, we remain focused on our efforts to help consumers understand the importance of planning their financial future, and guide them in achieving their financial goals. Citi has been reaching out to a wide range of audiences, looking beyond our clients, to promote financial literacy. We constantly look for opportunities to engage them in discussions on saving and budgeting, understanding investment options and preparing for retirement.”

More than 60% surveyed said they were “better off” compared to 2010, the highest reported level since 2007. Optimism on one’s financial future is also up, with four out of five respondents saying they are “very optimistic” or “optimistic” about their financial future. On savings, 42% reported they save money from every pay.

With better access to financial education, Filipinos are able to manage their current finances, and have become even more conscious about saving for the future.

For the fourth consecutive year, the Citi-sponsored research revealed a year-over-year increase in the Citi Fin-Q Score or financial well-being of Asian consumers. The Citi Fin-Q for the region currently stands at 54.5 out of a possible 100 points, up from 53.2 in 2010, 50.9 in 2009 and 49.5 in 2008.

Majority of respondents (74%) in the Asia Pacific region showed increased satisfaction in their current quality of life, while 70% were “very optimistic/optimistic” about their financial future.

Almost two-thirds (63%) of Asia Pacific respondents expressed confidence that their savings will lead to a comfortable life in retirement. Not a surprising fact, since almost half (46%) reported that they set aside some savings from every pay.

More than two in five Asia Pacific respondents also suggest their personal financial situation is “much better off” or “somewhat better off” compared to one year ago.

“The survey numbers in the Philippines are indeed very encouraging. The results show that Filipinos are becoming more determined to take charge of their finances and are responsible users of credit,” pointed out Vohra.

Sixty percent indicated that they pay off their full outstanding credit card balance on a monthly basis, up 12% from 2010. Filipinos are also looking at investments in the form of cash, real estate and insurance to ensure a comfortable retirement.

Average retirement savings is pegged at P1.56 million, marking an 11% increase from 2010. On the average, Filipinos reported having 10.4 weeks of savings in reserve.

Filipinos have embraced digital banking with fully 70% saying they use the Internet or mobile phone for banking transactions. Given a choice, a majority (52%) expressed a preference for banking online from a home or office computer – the highest number registered among the participating countries.

“What the numbers tell us is that Filipinos are taking a more active role in planning their finances and choosing the financial products and services according to their needs,” added Vohra. “Citi will continue to do its part in promoting financial literacy, working with the right partners around the country to engage more Filipinos from all walks of life.”

Lee Min-ho's Wax Figure Up For Display In Shanghai

MANILA, Philippines - Hallyu actor Lee Min-ho will be immortalized through a wax figure in Shanghai, China.

Madame Tussauds wax museum in Shanghai will showcase the actor's wax figure.

Lee Min-ho, who rose to fame when he starred in the hit Korean drama "Boys Over Flowers" in 2009, will join A-list celebrities whose wax figures are on display in the museum's Shanghai branch.

They are Julia Roberts, David Beckham, Robert Pattinson, Nicole Kidman, Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Madonna, Michael Jackson, Andy Lau, Jackie Chan and Yao Ming.

Representatives from Madame Tussauds from United Kingdom and China went to Korea to take Lee Min-ho's body measurements and take his pictures.

“To get different angles for my smile, I had to have my mouth open for three hours. I thought my jaw would break off. But to think I will be immortalized is kind of awesome,” said Lee, according to the Korea JoongAng Daily.

Lee Min-ho was chosen for the wax figure due to numerous requests from fans.

A museum representative was quoted as saying that Madame Tussauds selects individuals who receive love, care and respect from the locals.

Lee Min-ho is one of the most popular stars today in South Korea and other countries.

His official Facebook page has 5.78 million fans and his Twitter account has 762,944 followers. His Weibo account, China's version of Twitter, has 4.85 million fans while his Me2day account is followed by 256,519 fans.

The actor is also one of the most popular product endorsers in Korea. A poll held last month showed Lee Min-ho being chosen as the No. 1 male celebrity endorser for cosmetics.

Lee Min-ho's biggest career break came in 2009 when he was chosen to play Gu Jun-pyo in "Boys Over Flowers." The drama became a ratings hit in Korea and Asia.

This became a turning point to Lee Min-ho's career as it opened many opportunities for him. Since 2009, he has endorsed about 30 products and companies.

And his acting career continues to flourish. He starred in the drama "Personal Taste" in 2010 and "City Hunter" in 2011.

He currently stars in the historical drama "Faith," which started airing in Korea earlier this month.

Lee Min-ho's wax figure will reportedly be displayed at the Shanghai wax museum in April next year.

John Lloyd Was An ‘Other Man’ In A Past Relationship

MANILA, Philippines – Considering the rumors that he was the reason Angelica Panganican and Derek Ramsay broke up, John Lloyd Cruz makes a startling revelation that he had once been the “other man.”

“Ako, at one point, parang pumayag ako na yes, kahit number two lang ako okay na ako,” came his confession at the presscon for “The Mistress,” a movie that reunites him with his favorite screen partner, Bea Alonzo.

“I was so much younger. I was in my late twenties noong mangyari ‘yon," he said. “The feeling was too strong at hindi ko ma-contain.”

Back then, he was left with no choice but to be at the woman’s mercy.

“Wala, siya ‘yung nag-take over, wala, pumayag na ako. Nabigkas ko ‘yung, ‘Okay lang, kung kailan lang may time. Okay na ako doon,’” Lloydie shared without revealing the woman's identity.

The subject was brought up in relation to his role in the film; that of a man who got involved with a woman who’s already taken. Her love interest in the film, played by Bea Alonzo, is the mistress of Ronaldo Valdez’s character.

The actor related that he was in a very difficult situation then.

“Mahirap siya kasi nawawala ‘yung…hindi naman sa imoral siya pero parang dine-dare ka niya to be someone you’re not kasi ‘yun nga parang masyadong nailabas mo ‘yung nararamdaman mo for that person.”

But the actor realized, albeit belatedly, that “I was only infatuated.”

Another realization came when Lloydie felt that “she deserves (someone) better.”

“She did not deserve to be in that kind of separation. In a way naging instrumental ako na kaya bakit siya nalagay sa ganoong sitwasyon is because hindi ko ginawa kung ano ‘yung tama,” he explained.

Click tandem

John Lloyd and Bea mark their 10th anniversary as a love team.

More often than not ay nabubuwag ‘yung tandem.”

After several hit movies, Bea’s leading man feels grateful that their pairing is still widely followed.

“Natutuwa kami na talaga. Ako personally natutuwa na hanggang ngayon ay kaya pa naming gumawa, very much able to do a movie, sell a movie. Very soon we’ll be back with a teleserye. Kung meron mang nabago kahit na maliit, kahit na konti sa aming nakaraan ni Bea baka hindi kami nakaharap dito,” he said.

Angeline Finds Biological Mom

MANILA, Philippines – Singer Angeline Quinto’s much-publicized search for her biological mother has finally come to a close as she meets Rosemarie Mabao or, as she fondly calls her, Nanay Susan.

According to a taped report aired on “The Buzz,” Aug. 26, a neighbor of Mabao was said to have approached a group of Quinto’s fans to tell them of the former’s whereabouts. They, in turn, approached Kate Valenzuela, the singer’s handler, who personally communicated with Mabao.

It was reportedly on June 30 when Quinto, through her handler’s efforts, finally met Mabao at a mall in Ortigas.

So kinabahan ako. Hindi ko naman po alam na ‘yung nasa harap ko eh siya na,” Quinto related.

Mabao shed tears upon seeing Quinto, who was unable to say anything and just settled for hugging the older female.

“Kinakabahan ako no’n na naiiyak na sobrang tuwa po, kasi siyempre alam niyo naman po na dati pa lang talaga ito na ‘yung pangarap ko, na sana makita ko isang araw ‘yung tunay kong nanay,” said she.

Quinto said that her Mama Bob was initially surprised with the news, but was nevertheless happy for her. “Alam naman na din ni Mama Bob po lahat at naipaliwanang ko na ng maayos kaya alam ko naman na okay siya,” she said, adding that her “nanay-nanayan” even advised her to help Mabao.

But it seems she received a different reaction from her father Pop Quiros, whom she continues to urge to let bygones be bygones.

Quinto revealed plans of possibly having a house built for Mabao after the one she is having built for her and her Mama Bob is done. She also constantly guarantees Mama Bob that she wouldn’t forget about her just because she finally met her biological mom.

Want financial advice? Let these ‘Facebook bankers’ help you

MANILA, Philippines — If you want help managing your personal finances but are intimidated by the stone-cold treatment of employees in banks, this Facebook app launched by a local bank may be able to help you.

Called the Bankers Online App, the Facebook-based application developed by the digital marketing unit of Ayala-led Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) aims to bridge the gap between bankers and the bank’s customers.

Executives of the bank said they noticed how account holders and would-be customers are often intimidated to ask their bankers about the most basic finance questions for fear of being perceived as unknowledgeable about the matter.

“[This app] will transcend the very deep ravine between the stiff banker persona and anyone on Facebook because it’s very personalized,” claimed Virginia Brocka, digital marketing head at BPI.

Anyone with a Facebook account, even those without an account with BPI, can post questions for the bankers and receive a response for their queries by simply liking the BPI page on Facebook and accessing the Bankers Online app.

Brocka said they took pains to ensure that the profiles of the bankers — which came from various BPI units and departments and are mostly young — are available for users to see, in order to create some sort of “emotional connection” with the bankers.

“That way, people can relate to somebody who is their age, or to a woman who is also a mother. Users can see the bankers as a person they can relate to,” Brocka explained.

Users can ask questions from a range of topics such as financial wellness, responsible borrowing, and money management among others. Should the banker be unable to answer the query, Brocka said the “full force of BPI” will be behind the banker to help the customer in resolving the question.

Executives said bankers would answer questions after about 24 hours, and the service will only be available on the banks usual banking days, from Monday to Friday.

Aside from being a hub for financing advice, the app also serves other useful functions such as the ability to schedule an offline appointment with a bank employee; and a helpdesk facility that will aid users in resolving account-related questions.

Brocka said bringing such kind of service directly for Facebook is essential especially in a nation where 27 million Internet users are on Facebook, or more than 90 percent of its total Internet penetration.

“We have seen that the use of social media has become an integral part of Filipinos’ lives,” added Carmencita Gozar, vice president and Brand BPI Division Head.

Gozar said they envision the app to “democratize expert financial advice” and lead Filipinos to better financial wellness overall.

“This is the Internet age, and we (banks) should embrace it. It’s an opportunity for us to keep on learning what our customers really need,” Gozar stressed.
